Scale Issues In The Development Of Future Precipitation Scenarios, Justin T. Schoof
Scale Issues In The Development Of Future Precipitation Scenarios, Justin T. Schoof
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Many of the processes that govern precipitation occurrence and intensity occur at spatial and temporal scales that remain unresolved by the current generation of climate models. The resulting mismatch between the information reliably provided by such models and the needs of researchers assessing impacts associated with changes in precipitation has led to the development of downscaling techniques. In this paper, the need for downscaling is demonstrated by describing (1) the difference between real-world precipitation-governing processes and their representation in climate models and (2) the differences between theoretical expectations of precipitation changes at large and small scales in a warmer world. …
A Holistic Approach To Guide Development Of Future Climate Scenarios For Water Resource Applications, Michael J. Puma
A Holistic Approach To Guide Development Of Future Climate Scenarios For Water Resource Applications, Michael J. Puma
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Changes in climate are expected to have a substantial impact on water resources. Consequently, numerous hydrologists have studied the widely recognized challenge of using climate-change projections to address questions related to management of future water resources. Significant effort has been invested in formulating methods to overcome the difference in spatial scales between available future climate scenarios and water management needs. While numerous downscaling options exist, resource evaluation for the various approaches is rarely discussed; most assessments are focused on evaluating the skill of different methodologies. In this study, a framework is described that water managers can use 1) to identify …

Intranational Cooperation And Conflict Over Freshwater: Examples From The Western United States, Nathan T. Eidem, Kristel J. Fesler, Aaron T. Wolf
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
From the Klamath basin in the Pacific Northwest to the Jordan basin in the Middle East, water conflicts can be disruptive, and affect a wide range of stakeholders, often with varying interests. As competition between water users and water use sectors increases, the potential for conflict increases, especially when governing institutions differ ( Jarvis et al. 2005 ). However, research has shown that cooperation is more prevalent than conflict in international river basins ( Wolf 1998 ; Wolf et al. 2003 ). As the demand for water approaches or meets available supply, intranational conflicts may increase ( Postel and Wolf …
Fracking And The Neoliberalization Of The Hydro-Social Cycle In Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale, Michael H. Finewood, Laura J. Stroup
Fracking And The Neoliberalization Of The Hydro-Social Cycle In Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale, Michael H. Finewood, Laura J. Stroup
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Oil and gas firms are utilizing a controversial drilling technique, hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to access unconventional natural gas reserves in Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale. The potential impacts of fracking are creating sharp tensions between stakeholders over the costs and benefits of drilling within their communities. In particular, much contention has emerged over water resources as the process both uses and degrades billions of gallons of water. This paper takes a critical look at the way multi-scale neoliberal discourses obfuscate comprehensive understandings of fracking's effect on water resources. We turn to the neoliberal environments literature as a way to situate the …

We present the first reconstruction of the parasitoses among the people of the Loma San Gabriel culture, as represented by 36 coprolites excavated from the Cueva de los Muertos Chiquitos in Durango, Mexico. The coprolites date to approximately 1,400-yr-ago. Species identified based on eggs recovered include the trematode Echinostoma sp., the tapeworms Hymenolepis sp. and Dipylidium caninum, and the nematodes Ancylostoma duodenale, Enterobius vermicularis, and Trichuris trichiura. After rehydration and screening, 2 methods were used to recover eggs from these samples including spontaneous sedimentation and flotation. Samples were analyzed by 3 different laboratories for independent verification …

When Bigger Is Not Always Better: Making “Cents” Of Illinois School District Reform Proposals, Craig Griffin
When Bigger Is Not Always Better: Making “Cents” Of Illinois School District Reform Proposals, Craig Griffin
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
School district consolidation is a perennial topic in Illinois. This Comment provides an overview of the school district reform proposals that surfaced during the 97th General Assembly and discusses the merits of each. In particular, it notes that both the financial savings and academic gains touted by proponents of consolidation as potential benefits are, in fact, claims that are unsupported by evidence and which are likely to be nonexistent in practice. Instead, the Comment argues that school districts as they are currently formed continue to offer benefits to local residents that oftentimes are not given serious consideration by the state's …

A Community Resilience Model For Understanding And Assessing The Sustainability Of Forest-Dependent Communities, Kofi Akamani
A Community Resilience Model For Understanding And Assessing The Sustainability Of Forest-Dependent Communities, Kofi Akamani
Forestry Articles
Recent decades have seen an evolution in thinking on the sustainability of forest-dependent communities from community stability to community resilience, which seeks to enhance communities’ ability to respond to drivers of change in ways that sustain the multiple dimensions of well-being. However, the process of community response to drivers of change is not well understood and methods for assessing community resilience are not fully developed. This paper proposes a theoretical model to understand the structures and processes influencing the adaptation of communities and households to drivers of change and which can serve as a guide to the development of indicators …

Revolving Green Loan Funds And Implementation At Siuc, Carly Freiwald
Revolving Green Loan Funds And Implementation At Siuc, Carly Freiwald
Honors Theses
Over the past few years revolving green loan funds have been implemented at about fifty schools all across the country to help fund sustainability projects on their campus. These green revolving funds are used to invest in sustainability projects that lower operating expenses, for example, energy bills. The savings that these projects produce then get sent back to the fund and are reinvested in additional projects. These loan funds have been incredibly helpful in furthering the sustainability goals of colleges, while also helping to save the universities money. My research included looking into how other universities are implementing these revolving …

Jockin' Jay-Z: A Praxis-Oriented Autoethnography Towards Possiblizing Change In Black Male Performativity, Bryant A. Payne
Research Papers
This paper strives to understand how my own conceptions (reflexivity) and embodiment (engagement) of a particular rapper, Jay-Z, contributes towards my subjectivity and art. My research answers, “What does my own experience and embodiment of Jay-Z tell me about my own black masculinity and art in the hip-hop generation?” To answer this question, I use what Toyosaki calls “praxis-oriented autoethnography.” I show what my relationship with Jay-Z tells me about my black masculinity, culture, and becoming within the hip-hop generation.

Illinois Local Food Systems: A Geospatial Analysis, Abu S. Khan
Illinois Local Food Systems: A Geospatial Analysis, Abu S. Khan
Research Papers
Recently, more attention has been paid to studies of local food systems that are specific to a particular place as a potential solution for providing healthy food, reducing carbon emissions, and promotion of local agriculture sustainability. In the United States, the demands of locally produced foods have increased substantially in recent years. There are several reasons for this increase, including long-distance food transportation’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, the community food-security movement, and the increase of negative environmental problems related to large scale agriculture, etc., have contributed to the shift of attention from global food systems to local ones. Moreover, …
Ground Layer Response To Disturbance In The Pine-Dominated Eastern Foothill Region Of West-Central Alberta, Canada, Rebecca Elizabeth Mooneyhan Mcclelland
Ground Layer Response To Disturbance In The Pine-Dominated Eastern Foothill Region Of West-Central Alberta, Canada, Rebecca Elizabeth Mooneyhan Mcclelland
Dissertations
The canopy cover of the Pinus contorta forests of west-central Alberta, dictates colonization of the forest floor ground layer. This dynamic ground layer is a mosaic of feather mosses and reindeer lichens in a system driven by disturbance. In this project, anthropogenic was used to control canopy cover change and study its effects on the ground layer. Timber companies selectively mechanically thinned sections producing three experimental areas with uncut controls. Data were collected from 182, 6.5 m2 plots located in the four thinning areas. Six general areas of inquiry were posed around determining ground layer responses to canopy opening: 1) …
