Reassessing The Impact Of Inflation Targeting In Emerging Market Economies, Babatunde Aiyemo
Reassessing The Impact Of Inflation Targeting In Emerging Market Economies, Babatunde Aiyemo
Research Papers
In this paper, we subject a seeming consensus on the impact of inflation targeting in emerging market economies to some robustness assessments. First we report performance along carefully redefined country brackets, we find little evidence to support the notion that economies with inflation targeting policies performed better than non-targeting economies in terms of GDP growth, inflation and economic volatility. In fact, there is a suggestion in the results that amongst certain clusters of economies, certain restrictive aspects of the policy actually inhibit growth
In a subsequent assessment, we control for extent of development using specific country proxies but equally observe, …
Specific Gage Analysis On The Lower White River, Arkansas, Adam Levis Shaffner
Specific Gage Analysis On The Lower White River, Arkansas, Adam Levis Shaffner
Theses
This study documents the stage adjustments in the Lower White River between 1931 and 2012 at four rated gaging stations along the trunk stem of the river. The study reach extends from Calico Rock, Arkansas, to the confluence of the White River with the Mississippi River north of Arkansas City, a distance of about 509 km. The specific gage approach was used to track hydrological response in the study reach. In order to approach spatial homogeneity across the four gaging locations along the study reach, input discharges were normalized to multiples of mean daily flow (MDF). Specific gage analysis tracks …
Southern Illinois Gis Mapping For Next Generation 9-1-1, William Lee Barrett
Southern Illinois Gis Mapping For Next Generation 9-1-1, William Lee Barrett
Theses
Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1) will revolutionize how the public accesses emergency services and will alter the technological landscape within which existing public safety agencies operate. A lack of systematic methodologies exists for quality control of the required geospatial data layers for NG 9-1-1 systems. The primary objective of this study was to develop and systematize a highly accurate NG 9-1-1 GIS database for Counties of Southern Illinois (CSI). The project goals included mapping relevant geospatial data layers required by and based on NENA standard data formats; conducting data quality control and standardization; and providing standardized spatial datasets for NG …

Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres
Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
How to balance land uses to sustainably feed, clothe, and power a burgeoning population aspiring to western lifestyles will be a profound, if not the most profound, challenge to policymakers in the 21st century. And, climate change’s unpredictable effects on natural systems will exacerbate already complex, uncertain, and contentious land use decision-making. While biomass-based energy policies gained momentum throughout the 2000s as one way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, assumptions about biofuels’ environmental and societal benefits are beginning to come under closer scrutiny. In response, public laws have incorporated varying forms of sustainability considerations. Many private standards have emerged, however, …

Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague
Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Over the last decade, Montana's fastest growing basins have experienced a surge of reliance on a certain “permit-exempt well loophole,” which enables small ground water diversions to avoid having to go through the regulatory process that determines whether the proposed use would adversely impact senior water users and ground water supply. This loophole has generated significant conflict with senior right owners in areas where exempt wells have provided water for large-scale residential developments. As a partial solution, this article examines ground water mitigation exchanges designed to address similar issues in Washington and presents the 63rd Montana Legislature with recommendations for …
Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis
Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The saga over exempt wells in the western United States and Canada epitomizes a new type of water conflict – a spaghetti-western water war. The political melodrama stars local governments to serve as sheriff of water-supply planning duties. Exempt wells number in the millions, and herding the growing numbers is testing the mettle of the states and provinces responsible for the management, allocation, and protection of natural resources. The separation of laws governing ground water and surface water, coupled with changes in geography and geology within a jurisdiction, compound the administrative riddle and give rise to a broad spectrum of …
Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton
Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton
The Psychological Record
Human geography is a social science concerned primarily with data-based analyses and the utilization of various theoretical constructs mostly developed in other social science disciplines. A discussion of the character of human geography supports the suggestion that human geographic analyses of landscapes will benefit from employment of additional theories, specifically from a judicious interpretation and application of work in behavior analysis. Human landscape-making behavior can be explained using the concepts and principles of behavior analysis as developed in psychology and as applied in sociology and anthropology. For human geographers, this suggestion is at variance with most other recent conceptual contributions …

Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Theses
In second language research and pedagogy, motivation has been labeled as a key factor for success (Clément, 1980; Dörnyei, 1998; Tremblay & Gardner, 1995; Deci & Ryan, 1985); namely, language learners with high levels of motivation will be more successful than those who exhibit more negative attitudes towards learning the TL. Through classroom observations, student survey responses and personal interviews conducted in a beginner-level university French class, this study attempted to determine broad motivational patterns using Gardner's (1982) binary integrative and instrumental model, and then determine specific origins for these motivations. Four interviewees were selected: two with high instrumental and …
Improving The Reliability Of Wind Power Through Spatially Distributed Wind Generation, Samuel Martin Fisher
Improving The Reliability Of Wind Power Through Spatially Distributed Wind Generation, Samuel Martin Fisher
Theses
Wind power is a fast-growing, sustainable energy source. However, the problem of wind variability as it relates to wind power reliability is an obstacle to its large-scale deployment. It is possible to improve the reliability of wind power by interconnecting wind generation. In this study, wind power plants within the Midwest ISO were aggregated to examine the effect on reliability. Wind speed data from the North American Regional Reanalysis were used to calculate wind power data. It was found that the reliability of interconnected wind power was improved relative to individual wind power plants in both the short-term and the …

The Importance Of Arts Education And Not Leaving A Child Behind, Amanda J. Urbanski
The Importance Of Arts Education And Not Leaving A Child Behind, Amanda J. Urbanski
Research Papers
Despite the fact that the arts are regarded as a core curriculum classes in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), it is still regarded as a subject that is not as important as math or science in America’s public schools. Upon extensive research, it is clear that this act has many issues. These issues tend to hover around whether or not arts education is important. Like many of the author’s cited in this paper, this writer agrees that change needs to happen in policy on a national level. Because a direct route to policy change is a long-term goal, …
High-Resolution Niche Models Via A Correlative Approach: Comparing And Combining Correlative And Process-Based Information, Victor Bogosian Iii, Eric C. Hellgren, Michael W. Sears, Raymond W. Moody
High-Resolution Niche Models Via A Correlative Approach: Comparing And Combining Correlative And Process-Based Information, Victor Bogosian Iii, Eric C. Hellgren, Michael W. Sears, Raymond W. Moody
Publications
Correlative and process-based approaches to describing the ecological niche in a spatially explicit fashion have often been compared in an adversarial framework. We sought to compare niche models developed via classic (correlative only), niche (process-based information), and hybridized (correlative augmented with process-based derived information) approaches, with the goal of determining if the added effort of process-based model development yielded better model fit. Correlative data layers (i.e., habitat models) included vegetation community types, Euclidean distance statistics, neighborhood analyses, and topographically-derived information. Mechanistic data layers were estimates of thermal suitability derived from field-collected datasets and biophysical calculations, and estimates of prey biomass …

Irish Chefs And Restaurants In The Geography Of “Local” Food Value Chains, Leslie Duram, Mary Cawley
Irish Chefs And Restaurants In The Geography Of “Local” Food Value Chains, Leslie Duram, Mary Cawley
Publications
Restaurant chefs and owners have a potentially influential role to play in promoting the use of local foods and supporting producers. Indeed chefs are taste makers, and their conceptualization of local food can influence consumers’ perceptions, knowledge and geographical awareness. Yet their role is not well documented in research literature. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven purposively selected chefs in Galway City, Ireland, who are seeking to develop a local cuisine. Menus, websites, and statements of philosophy were also analyzed. Attention focused on the definition of local food, sources of supply, how local food is used in cuisine, and how …
You Can Breastfeed But . . . : A Rhetorical Analysis Of Images And Commentary On Breastfeeding, Jonna Ziniel
You Can Breastfeed But . . . : A Rhetorical Analysis Of Images And Commentary On Breastfeeding, Jonna Ziniel
Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of breastfeeding images and the commentary about those images, from a rhetorical perspective. Specifically, I use a feminist lens in order to analyze images of breastfeeding in both magazine and online environments, as well as online commentary about the images. I examine both celebrity and non-celebrity images of breastfeeding from popular pregnancy and parenting magazines, non-traditional parenting magazines, company web sites, and online articles and blog sites. Chapter one presents a statement of purpose, research questions, and an examination of the current literature pertinent to the study including sections on breastfeeding benefits, the sexualized woman's …
Perceived Risk Of Homeland Security Incidents: The Insignificance Of Actual Risk Factors, Melissa R. Haynes
Perceived Risk Of Homeland Security Incidents: The Insignificance Of Actual Risk Factors, Melissa R. Haynes
Theses
Contingency theory, with regard to risk of homeland security incidents and homeland security preparedness, has received considerable empirical support. In past research, risk has been measured subjectively as agency executives' perceived risk of specific homeland security incidents occurring within their jurisdictions. This study examines actual risk, using the objective risk factors of experience with past natural hazards, social vulnerability, and urbanization. These risk factors, used in combination, have been significantly associated with terrorism-related homeland security incidents in the United States, and are used in risk assessment models of natural hazards. Contrary to expectations, the results of this study indicate that …

Network Coevolution And Democracy: A Spatial Econometric Approach, Aya Kachi
Network Coevolution And Democracy: A Spatial Econometric Approach, Aya Kachi
Working Papers
Regime transitions are contagious according to the diffusion-of-democracy literature: a country's regime is affected by others' through various predefined networks (e.g. geographical proximity), as well as by the country's own political, economic and social attributes (e.g. GDP levels). My account departs from the existing diffusion theory by allowing for countries' self-selection into peer regime networks based on their democracy levels in the past. For example, a country can form stronger dependency ties with countries that demonstrated similar democracy levels in the past (homophily). In the longitudinal setting, the traditional diffusion mechanism with the presence of self-selection generates the "co-evolutionary dynamic" …
