Anna He Purnabramha: Deorukhe Women’S Agency In The Making Of Bodies, Cuisines, And Culture In Maharashtra, India, Gauri Anilkumar Pitale
Dissertations
The world is changing. India is changing. Food is changing. Bodies are changing. What does this mean for the women of Maharashtra, India? Globalization and modernity manifest in new and interesting ways the world over. As people establish networks of global commodity, capital, and human circulation, anthropologists raise pertinent concerns. While some are apprehensive about cultural loss and western cultural imperialism, others make a case for the rise of glocalization. While some espouse the positives of a free market economy, others are critical of the nutrition transition in developing countries and what this means for the health of the people …

Dissertations
An ABSTRACT of the DISSERTATION of: Stephen C. Foggatt, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Curriculum and Instruction, presented on November 3, 2017, at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois. TITLE: The Pernicious Prophecy of Diminished Academic Expectations MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. D. John McIntyre This study examines the relationship between academic expectations and achievement, particularly as it concerns minority students. I have often been troubled by the narrative surrounding the academic potential of minority students in America, and my research is intended to broaden the discussion of this issue by presenting a chronicle of thoughts collected from individuals who have …

Being In Sync: Practicing Creative Nature Connection With Youth, Lisa M. Lipsett
Being In Sync: Practicing Creative Nature Connection With Youth, Lisa M. Lipsett
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This article and companion video detail the Creative Nature Connection program, its theory and application, in five place based learning classrooms. Opening the senses, repeated practice, using simple materials, making encounters personally meaningful, following the principles of contemplative practice and supporting improvisational free play all support the shift to being in- sync with nature building a love of nature, creative confidence and environmental knowledge. Themes of resilience, well-being, trust, calm, creative confidence, focus, self-change, alternative ways to know, belonging and connection to self, others and nature, are briefly shared using student's and teacher's words. The companion video shares short student …
Biology, Art And Sustainability, Linda Jolly, Jan Van Boeckel, Solveig Slåttli
Biology, Art And Sustainability, Linda Jolly, Jan Van Boeckel, Solveig Slåttli
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
How can the teaching of biology contribute to sustainability education? The authors of this article suggest that their approach has the potential to increase the students’ level of engagement with the natural environment. The scope of biology teaching can be widened by allowing room for more experience and art-based activities. Such a change may deepen and expand the learners’ insights in natural phenomena, which in turn might foster or enhance an attitude of care-taking for the natural environment.
The Prevalence Of Religious Service Attendance In America: A Review And Meta-Analysis, Chad S. Briggs
The Prevalence Of Religious Service Attendance In America: A Review And Meta-Analysis, Chad S. Briggs
Dissertations
The Gallup Poll and General Social Survey have asked Americans about their religious service attendance since 1939 and 1972, respectively. With remarkable consistency, these two surveys have estimated that just over 40% of the American population regularly attends religious services. Yet, recent research has called this “gold standard” into question, citing three sources of bias in these estimates: (a) ambiguous item wording, (b) an ambiguously specified time frame; and (c) data collection methods that lend themselves to socially desirable responding. Several lines of research have developed to eliminate or minimize these sources of bias, but these efforts have yielded a …

Pedagogy Of Accomplice: Navigating Complicity In Pedagogies Aimed Toward Social Justice, Robyn Stout Sheridan
Pedagogy Of Accomplice: Navigating Complicity In Pedagogies Aimed Toward Social Justice, Robyn Stout Sheridan
Dissertations
In this study, I introduce and analyze the role of complicity in discussions of social justice pedagogies to determine how teachers, who teach social justice oriented courses, navigate complicity. Through an in-depth review of social justice education literature, I show that teacher/scholars rely upon four context-dependent discourses of complicity: (1) responsibility, (2) consciousness-awareness, (3) relation to world, self and others, and (4) inevitability and implicature. In order to understand how these discourses impact pedagogies that seek to make connections between people and social systems, I selected teacher/scholars who are widely published, read, and assigned in social justice oriented fields. I …
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Honors Theses
The evolution of museological theory at the Bibliotheque de Sainte-Genevieve marks a transition in the history of collecting during the early modern period. Although the contents of the collection remained largely unchanged from earlier Wunderkammern, the acquisition, display, and organization of artifacts within the cabinet had evolved tremendously by the end of the 17th century and one can begin to see the collection as a predecessor of modern museological methodologies.
Evolution Of Eusociality In Ants Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Michael S. Holm
Evolution Of Eusociality In Ants Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Michael S. Holm
Honors Theses
Eusociality can be seen in a variety of insect families, including the ants (Formicidae). There is no clear understanding on how it evolved but it is well understood that transitions between social phases must happen. Several theories and hypothesis have been presented but none of them completely encapsulate the whole evolution of eusociality. Several studies on ants focus on different aspects of their evolution in the eusocial context and provide good supporting data. Two major models, Alternate Inclusive Fitness Model and Worker Behavior Model, are good blueprints for future research. As more data is collected and studies were done, more …
Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Research Papers
Biochar is the product of burning biomass, such as hardwood, rice hulls, bamboo, or even chicken litter, in a low- to no-oxygen environment. The result is a black carbon skeletal-like structure of the original biomass.
Research into biochar as a soil amendment has been influenced by the study of anthropogenic dark, richly fertile soils found in the Amazon rainforest where the native forest soil is acidic and low in fertility. Biochar research for amending agricultural soils is relatively new but there are strong indications that this practice can decrease the need for additional fertilizer and water inputs.
Biochar products will …
Misfits In The Front Of The Classroom: Poetic Narratives Of Teaching With A Hidden Disability, Nicole C. Eugene
Misfits In The Front Of The Classroom: Poetic Narratives Of Teaching With A Hidden Disability, Nicole C. Eugene
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Instructors with a hidden disability may choose to talk with their students about their disability, they may choose to pass as normal, or they may deal with their disability in ways that challenge the binary of showing/hiding. Communication about disabilities occurs in contexts that provide a range of possible cultural values that can work to reinforce an individual’s sense of belonging to a group or organization. To examine how graduate students negotiate their disability or illness in the classroom context, I conducted three interviews with graduate instructors addressing how they communicate their disability in the classes they teach. I learned …
(Re)Defining Transnational Identities Through Diaspora Philanthropy In South Asian Indian Non-Profit Organisations, Noorie Baig
(Re)Defining Transnational Identities Through Diaspora Philanthropy In South Asian Indian Non-Profit Organisations, Noorie Baig
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Abstract
This paper identifies “diaspora philanthropy” as an important dimension to maintaining transnational identities among South Asian Indian Americans. Several South Asian initiatives and organisations promote involvement to the motherland (homeland) as individuals negotiate a sense of belonging in a migrant context. It is important to explore the motivations behind this new type of socio-political activism that is fuelled by a sense of responsibility to the motherland. I examine three non-government, South Asian Indian organisation websites that are shaped by globalisation, as a means explore new trends in diaspora philanthropy. A critical intercultural communication framework is used to explore how …

American Nationalism And The “Curse Of Rurality”: Urban-Rural Differences And The Notion Of National Belonging, Milos Djeric
American Nationalism And The “Curse Of Rurality”: Urban-Rural Differences And The Notion Of National Belonging, Milos Djeric
Research Papers
Relationship between nationalism and urban or rural environment is not one that is often studied, apart from traditional historical interpretation of it being a modern, urban phenomenon, characterized by imagery and discourse of rurality. Yet it seems that, in the last several decades, not only have nationalist conflicts mostly been rooted within the countryside and nationalist agendas won on elections in them, but that there is a more fundamental connection between nationalism and rurality. While briefly addressing this issue, this paper focuses on the analysis of 2014 GSS data, exploring the relationship between the place of living and the notion …

Adaptive Water Governance: Integrating The Human Dimensions Into Water Resource Governance, Kofi Akamani
Adaptive Water Governance: Integrating The Human Dimensions Into Water Resource Governance, Kofi Akamani
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The command-and-control paradigm of water resource management that dominated 20th century water policy has resulted in vulnerabilities due to its inadequate consideration of the human dimensions as well as its failure to prioritize the need for learning and adapting to change and uncertainties. In response to these shortfalls, recent years have seen the emergence of alternative water policy frameworks, notably integrated water resource management (IWRM) and adaptive management. However, while IWRM broadens the planning goals and scope of water resource governance through integration and coordination across scales and sectors, it does not adequately emphasize learning to deal with uncertainty. On …

Water And Society: Interdisciplinary Education In Natural Resources, Laszlo J. Kulcsar, Joseph A. Aistrup, Thomas Bulatewicz, Jeffrey M. Peterson, Stephen M. Welch, David R. Steward
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Natural resource management and education must account for both the natural and human components of a complex system, yet examples of such interdisciplinary approaches are still relatively rare, especially in education. This study discusses a graduate seminar on water management, developed from an interdisciplinary National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. The seminar applied constructivist pedagogy which is not only best suited for interdisciplinary work, but also allows flexibility to redesign the course components and deliverables after each evaluation cycle. While the seminar was a successful experiment, several challenges remain when implementing such courses. These challenges include not only the organization and …

Behavioral Economics And Workforce Development: A Review Of The Literature From Labor Economics And The Broader Field, Cynthia J. Juniper 6581119, Heath Prince
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Structured Abstract
Objective: This review of current literature explores the strengths and limitations of applying tools of behavioral sciences to increase the participation and completion rate of training for lower-wage, frontline incumbent workers in ways that benefit both workers and sponsoring firms. Background: While behavioral economics may have deep roots in labor economics, its application in other fields, such as psychology and education, have drawn much of the recent attention it is receiving. Method: We reviewed studies in the field of social sciences that present potentially transferable lessons for behavioral economic approaches aiming to increase participation in …

Funeral Home Or Ritualistic Edifice? An Assessment Of An Enigmatic Structure At The Late Pre-Hispanic Site Of Panquilma, Central Coast Peru, Alysia Ashley Leon
Theses
Mortuary remains within an archaeological context can illuminate the social and political aspects not only of the individual(s) buried, but also of the living who interred them. Although this is so, a consensus has not been reached in regard to the following questions: how can we determine the social identity of the living that interred the dead? What are the implications of the living-dead interaction, and how do mortuary practices alter social memory in order to fit political needs? This thesis constitutes an initial attempt to answer these questions while examining pre-internment mortuary practices, and associated ideologies regarding the afterlife …

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
New records of the endemic semi-aquatic Nimba Otter Shrew Micropotamogale lamottei (Tenrecidae, Potamogalinae) were obtained during recent Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in Liberia. We discuss the future of this Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species in the face of large-scale landscape transformations. In an attempt to assess genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of M. lamottei throughout its distributional range, we examined two mitochondrial loci (cytochrome b and 12S rRNA) from five samples of Nimba Otter Shrews at three localities in Liberia and compared the 12S sequences with a GenBank sequence from Cote d'Ivoire. While all six individuals examined had …
What Influences Do Age, Gender And Race/Ethnicity Have On The Overall Health Consequences Of Excess Lead In Children?, Jessica J. Smith
What Influences Do Age, Gender And Race/Ethnicity Have On The Overall Health Consequences Of Excess Lead In Children?, Jessica J. Smith
Research Papers
After Flint, Michigan governmental authorities introduced a more corrosive water source into an already aging water system without adequate corrosion control, the percentage of children with elevated blood lead levels increased, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. The main objective of this research paper is to clarify influences of age, gender and race, ethnicity have on the overall health consequences of excess lead in children. There are studies that focus on the short and long term effects of neurological, hypertension, renal, and developmental on children. However, since specific demographic evidence is still limited, future research is still needed to implement a …

A Noble Dream: The Inter-American Studies Program At Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (1958-1985), Colin T. White
Honors Theses
This essay explores the rise and fall of the Inter-American studies program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Inter-American Studies Program attempted to bridge two distinctive bodies of academic literature when Dr. Albert Bork first envisioned it. Unlike other programs founded in the 1950s, SIU’s Inter-American Studies program was an academic experiment challenging that emerging trend. Regardless of its failure, the program’s original idea was innovative.
Women's Textile Graffiti: An Aesthetic Staging Of Public/Private Dichotomies, Diana Christine Woodhouse
Women's Textile Graffiti: An Aesthetic Staging Of Public/Private Dichotomies, Diana Christine Woodhouse
Dissertations
The cultural performance of textile graffiti, or yarnbombing, dramatizes women’s contested relationship to the public/privates dichotomies that constitute neoliberal capitalism as well as liberal democracies. Across both of these institutions, privatized matters are problematically excluded from political consideration, and private sphere values—such are nurturance, interdependence, and communalism—are denied their necessity and legitimacy as public goods. Textile graffiti artists furnish an association between public and private life by placing signifiers of domesticity and caregiving onto the public streets, and adorning those nurturant signifiers with political and/or feminist messages. In so doing, textile graffiti functions to politicize caregiving, to highlight its gendered …
