“No Cosby Show”: Single Black Mother Homes And How Black Men Build Romantic Relationships, Maia Niguel Moore
“No Cosby Show”: Single Black Mother Homes And How Black Men Build Romantic Relationships, Maia Niguel Moore
Dissertations
This qualitative study explored the lives of 11 Black men to better understand how Black men who were raised in single Black mother homes build romantic relationships with Black women. One focus group and a series of individual in-person interviews were conducted with the participants who ranged between 23 and 43 years of age. Participants were asked questions that inquired about their family of origin, messages they received about relationships, how they define masculinity, their perceptions of Black women, and their previous and current experiences building romantic relationships. Guided by a narrative approach, several different coding methods were used to …
The Evolution Of Inequity Aversion: Nonhuman Primate Responses To Unequal Reward Distributions, Jessica Feller
The Evolution Of Inequity Aversion: Nonhuman Primate Responses To Unequal Reward Distributions, Jessica Feller
Theses
Inequity aversion, the negative response to receiving an unequal reward, has been intensely studied and is well established in humans. However, why humans developed a profound sense of equity is still enigmatic, and the evolutionary roots of this interesting phenomenon are still largely unknown. The little research that has been completed on nonhuman primates indicates that some species, like humans, are inequity averse, while others are not. Brosnan and de Waal (2003) suggested that an aversion to inequitable outcomes coevolved as a response to an increased emphasis on cooperative relationships, where individuals would respond negatively when their rewards differed from …
Biological Distance In Middle And Late Archaic Populations Of The Mid-South United States, Meadow Lea Campbell
Biological Distance In Middle And Late Archaic Populations Of The Mid-South United States, Meadow Lea Campbell
Dissertations
This dissertation used osteometrics to assess the level of congruence between biological distance and long-distance material exchange in three Middle and Late Archaic groups living in the mid-South United States. Dental and cranial data support greater biological affinity between groups in southern Illinois (represented by individuals from the Black Earth site) and central Tennessee (individuals from Eva and surrounding sites) while groups in the Green River region of western Kentucky (Shell Mound Archaic) were somewhat more removed or perhaps more isolated. Females were more biologically variable than males for the majority of metrics used. This finding is suggestive of a …
Applying Aashe Stars To Examine Geography’S “Sense Of Place” In Sustainability Education, Makayla J. Bonney, Leslie A. Duram
Applying Aashe Stars To Examine Geography’S “Sense Of Place” In Sustainability Education, Makayla J. Bonney, Leslie A. Duram
Publications
Geography supports place-based inquiry for the learner, applying the old environmental adage of “think globally, act locally” to environmental problem solving. Many within and outside of the discipline of geography see it as a highly appropriate home for sustainability studies. Yet despite a history of human-environment education, place-based relevancy, and support from professional research or education organizations, studies show that geography does not always take a lead role in sustainability education. In the following, we revisit the contested histories of geography and sustainability education and show support for geography-led sustainability curriculum. The scope of this research is universities which have …
The New Black Face: The Transition Of Black One-Dimensional Characters From Film To Video Games, Kyle A. Harris
The New Black Face: The Transition Of Black One-Dimensional Characters From Film To Video Games, Kyle A. Harris
Research Papers
This paper is about the stereotypical portrayal of black character's in film and how these portrayals transitioned to video games. Video games are a growing medium that continue to evolve as technology advances. As video games have advanced, the characters have become more intricate than the two-dimensional character sprites featured on the earlier Nintendo NES and Atari consoles. Naturally, characters in video games are derived or inspired by actual people and as such display characteristics of different races/ethnic groups. In this paper, I will explore how stereotypical black characters have influenced the way in which characters are developed in video …

Testimonio And Re/Membering: A Case For Latcrit In The Latina/O Educational Crisis, Anthony R. Zariñana
Testimonio And Re/Membering: A Case For Latcrit In The Latina/O Educational Crisis, Anthony R. Zariñana
Research Papers
In this paper, I outline the present educational crisis facing Latina/o students in the U.S. I then trace the emergence of LatCrit out of Critical Race Theory as a particularly powerful theory accounting for Latina/o minority experiences in educational contexts. I offer my own Testimonio, centering my raced body in order speak back to everyday racist practices of educators. I conclude by offering a dream imperative to continue the work of Testimonios.
Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel
Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel
Research Papers
This paper is about identifying the factors that affect firm performance. Many economists have attempted to explain how to define an economy based off of many different aspects, but the focus of this paper is to find out what factors affect the performance of a company. This paper discusses different economic theories, and research which is related to the topic. Then I show a few factors that I found in my research regarding how a firm performs, and finish by interpreting and discussing those factors.

(De) Stabilizing The Normative: Using Critical Autoethnography As Intersectional Praxis To (Re) Conceptualize Identity Performances Of Black Queer Immigrants, Godfried A. Asante
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
This review explores how critical autoethnography as a qualitative research tool can be used to capture some of the social and material realities embedded in the processes of embodiment and performance and its implication for queer of color critique. Using African immigrant queer identity performances as an example, I elaborate how autoethnography can be used to highlight multiple, complex and sometimes contradictory identity negotiation strategies used by African queer migrants to navigate simultaneous systems of privilege and oppression. I show that identities of African queer migrants are ongoing processes riddled with constant negotiation and re-negotiation with systems with power which …
Stable Isotope Ratios As A Proxy For Human Geographic Provenance: Biogeographical Evidence From The 2h, 18o, And 13c Signatures In Modern Human Teeth, Anastasia Holobinko
Stable Isotope Ratios As A Proxy For Human Geographic Provenance: Biogeographical Evidence From The 2h, 18o, And 13c Signatures In Modern Human Teeth, Anastasia Holobinko
Dissertations
The positive identification of a decedent is paramount to a forensic investigation in which human remains have been recovered and must be identified. Due to increasing global mobility in the world's populations, it is not inconceivable that an individual might die far away from his or her home. Pinpointing an individual's geographic origin may contribute to definitive forensic identification of contemporary human skeletal remains in cases where dental records and other means of identification are either unavailable to law enforcement personnel or do not yield immediate results. Stable isotope analysis of biogenic tissues such as tooth enamel and bone mineral …
Jane Addams And Hans-Georg Gadamer: Learning To Listen With The Other, Mike Patrick Jostedt
Jane Addams And Hans-Georg Gadamer: Learning To Listen With The Other, Mike Patrick Jostedt
Dissertations
This dissertation is an attempt to explain how listening functions in ethical and political contexts. I put forward a three-fold way of listening that begins in selfishness and ends in empathy. These three ways of listening I refer to as: “listening-for,” “listening-to,” and “listening-with.” I will briefly explain how each of these ways of listening function in lived experience. Listening-for is self-centered, listening-to deals in relations between self and other, and listening-with involves both parties (individuals or groups) working together. These forms of listening are implicitly situated in both Hans-Georg Gadamer and Jane Addams. The bulk of the dissertation is …
Expanding The Dialogue: The Need For Fat Studies In Critical Intercultural Communication, Hannah R. Long
Expanding The Dialogue: The Need For Fat Studies In Critical Intercultural Communication, Hannah R. Long
Research Papers
In this paper, I argue that critical intercultural communication, as a discipline, can benefit from an inclusion of fat studies within its literature and analysis. Reciprocally, fat studies can also benefit from this relationship and the questions that would be raised for both fat studies and critical intercultural communication by such a juxtaposition of the areas of study. In particular, I employ my experiences as a fat, U.S. American woman to situate my own embodied knowledge as a way of understanding, in concert with literature reviews of fat studies and identity research within critical intercultural communication. I also utilize muted …
Misunderstandings And Consequences Of Labeling Artists As Self-Taught, Kristin Congdon
Misunderstandings And Consequences Of Labeling Artists As Self-Taught, Kristin Congdon
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
I have championed artists who have been invisible and underrepresented for decades. Sometimes these artists have been labeled by race or ethnicity and many of them have fallen into the categories of folk and self-taught. When writing about artists who have fallen into one of these categories, I have often tried to avoid labeling them, hoping to have them viewed simply (and complexly) as artists worthy of (high) art consideration. However, I have found that sometimes labeling has been necessary and even useful. Labeling helps a writer, curator, scholar, educator, or arts facilitator focus on a particular cultural group, worldview, …

Chewed Out: An Experimental Link Between Food Material Properties And Repetitive Loading Of The Masticatory Apparatus In Mammals, Matthew J. Ravosa, Jeremiah E. Scott, Kevin R. Mcabee, Anna J. Veit, Annika L. Fling
Publications
Using a model organism (rabbits) that resembles a number of mammalian herbivores in key aspects of its chewing behaviors, we examined how variation in dietary mechanical properties a ects food breakdown during mastication. Such data have implications for understanding phenotypic variation in the mammalian feeding apparatus, particularly with respect to linking jaw form to diet-induced repetitive loading. Results indicate that chewing frequency (chews/s) is independent of food properties, whereas chewing investment (chews/g) and chewing duration(s), which are proportional to repetitive loading of the jaws, are positively related to food sti ness and toughness. In comparisons of displacement-limited and stress-limited fragmentation …

Competencies In Training At The Graduate Student Level: Example Of A Pediatric Psychology Seminar Course., Carolyn E. Ievers-Landis, Rebecca A. Hazen, Karla K. Fehr
Publications
The recently developed competencies in pediatric psychology from the Society of Pediatric Psychology (SPP) Task Force on Competencies and Best Training Practices in Pediatric Psychology provide a benchmark to evaluate training program practices and student progress toward training in level-specific competency goals. Graduate-level training presents a unique challenge for addressing the breadth of competencies required in pediatric psychology while maintaining development of broader clinical psychology training goals. We describe a recurring graduate-level pediatric psychology seminar course that addresses training in a number of the competency cluster areas. The structure of the seminar, examples of classroom topics that correspond with competency …
The Role Of Social Science In Successfully Implementing Watershed Management Strategies, Kristin Floress, Kofi Akamani, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Andrew T. Kozich, Mae Davenport
The Role Of Social Science In Successfully Implementing Watershed Management Strategies, Kristin Floress, Kofi Akamani, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Andrew T. Kozich, Mae Davenport
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Successful watershed management and changes in water quality conditions are dependent upon changes in human behaviors. Those tasked with managing watersheds and other natural resources often assume that people are not acting to protect or restore their resources because they lack the necessary knowledge and understanding. However, individual behaviors are impacted by a variety of social, psychological, institutional, and economic factors that need to be understood for successful implementation of watershed management strategies. This paper provides an introduction to the field of human dimensions of watershed management, an overview of social science concepts that have been found to explain water-related …
Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer
Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer
Theses
In this thesis I explore the place of the actualized utopian American alternative community of higher learning within a philosophy of human culture. I carry out such a study in order to articulate a unifying description of movement; to find the “target” that orients the activity of actualized utopia, as opposed to a classificatory rule to define a mechanically determined utopian-object. Although these communities have varied in practice since the first generation of them were created in the mid-nineteenth century, I argue that they have played, and continue to play, a particular role in America. They imagine what a world …

There were many STEM related groups on campus where there was no active …
Lost And Found: The Third Molars Of Callimico Goeldii And The Evolution Of The Callitrichine Postcanine Dentition, Jeremiah E. Scott
Lost And Found: The Third Molars Of Callimico Goeldii And The Evolution Of The Callitrichine Postcanine Dentition, Jeremiah E. Scott
Publications
This study tests the hypothesis that the third molars of Callimico goeldii represent a reversal in evolutionary tooth loss within the Callitrichinae. Loss of third molars is part of a suite of unusual characters that has been used to unite marmosets and tamarins in a clade to the exclusion of Callimico. However, molecular phylogenetic studies provide consistent support for the hypothesis that marmosets are more closely related to Callimico than to tamarins, raising the possibility that some or all of the features shared by marmosets and tamarins are homoplastic. Here, I use the binary-state speciation and extinction (BiSSE) model …
Plague Inc: Distribution Of Health Resources In The Modern World, Allison Rump
Plague Inc: Distribution Of Health Resources In The Modern World, Allison Rump
Honors Theses
Due to the ever increasing connectedness of our world, disease can spread faster than ever before. Therefore global health care is a pressing issue in the modern world. The Ebola epidemic of 2014, which infected an unprecedented number of people, was reminder of not only of human fragility but of the state modern medicine, especially when deployed in economically developing areas. Not only is medicine about the science and treatment of disease, it also is about economics and the ability to pay for treatment. This can manifest in many forms, for the Ebola epidemic there often were not enough equipment …

Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito
Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito
Research Papers
With the ever-rising capabilities of motion capture systems; this project explored markerless facial motion capture programs using the Kinect Sensor for Xbox. Many systems today still use markers and end up retargeting after a motion capture recording. This project used a simpler process of setting up and being able to display the effects live. An off-the-shelf system was built using a computer, a Kinect Sensor, a plug-in from Brekel, and Autodesk software. The first goal was to create a process that was able to capture and project live facial motion for fewer than $500 USD. Anything over $500 USD was …
