Data Sets

This excel workbook contains data from a study of trophic transfer of radiolabeled (C-14) chlorpyrifos from organophosphate-resistant Hyalella azteca to a known predator, the Inland silverside Menidia beryllina. Fish were fed 15 dosed (~ 1 ng/animal) or control H. azteca for 7 days at two temperatures, 18 and 23°C, to simulate changes anticipated under global climate change (GCC). Following feeding, fish were analyzed for critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Total chlorpyrifos concentrations, as well as percent parent compound as a a measure of biotransformation, were measured in both H. azteca and M. beryllina.

Mammalian Nuclear Trub1, Mitochondrial Trub2, And Cytoplasmic Pus10 Produce Conserved Pseudouridine 55 In Different Sets Of Trna., Shaoni Mukhopadhyay, Manisha Deogharia, Ramesh Gupta

Articles

Most mammalian cytoplasmic tRNAs contain ribothymidine (T) and pseudouridine (Ψ) at positions 54 and 55, respectively. However, some tRNAs contain Ψ at both positions. Several Ψ54-containing tRNAs function as primers in retroviral DNA synthesis. The Ψ54 of these tRNAs is produced by PUS10, which can also synthesize Ψ55. Two other enzymes, TRUB1 and TRUB2, can also produce Ψ55. By nearest-neighbor analyses of tRNAs treated with recombinant proteins and subcellular extracts of wild-type and specific Ψ55 synthase knockdown cells, we determined that while TRUB1, PUS10, and TRUB2 all have tRNA Ψ55 synthase activities, they have different tRNA structural requirements. Moreover, these …

Special Issue "Local- To Global-Scale Environmental Issues", Leslie A. Duram

Publications

Geography is inextricably linked to sustainability. From local communities to national citizens to global agreements, there is a complex interplay between natural and social processes. In unison, these interacting forces determine our future sustainability. Addressing global issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean pollution, or systemic environmental injustice feels overwhelming, so people frequently decide to take local actions to promote sustainability. Indeed, these individual or community activities, when multiplied across the globe, are often the most feasible way to affect change, particularly when national or international politics halt progress toward sustainability. This Special Issue explores the complex interplay between sustainability …

Economic Value Of Preemergence Als Herbicides In Soybeans, Kara Koester Dec 2020

Economic Value Of Preemergence Als Herbicides In Soybeans, Kara Koester

Research Papers

One of the pressing issues in university and industry weed management programs is herbicide resistance. Growers across the Midwest are facing weeds that are impacting yield and evolving resistance to multiple sites of action groups such as EPSP Synthase Inhibitors (5-enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate), PPO inhibitors (protoporphyrinogen oxidase) , and HPPD inhibitors (4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase). Due to competitive weed infestations and potential resistance, it can be very costly and difficult to select an effective herbicide program for growers. Data was collected by Kara Koester at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Research Center in Belleville, Illinois during the 2019 growing season. A regression model was …

Documenting A Personal And National History: Echoes Of The Urban-Rural Divide In The Works Of Helga Gamboa, Sonja Gelin Dec 2020

Documenting A Personal And National History: Echoes Of The Urban-Rural Divide In The Works Of Helga Gamboa, Sonja Gelin

Honors Theses

This paper analyzes a series of vessels created by artist Helga Gamboa from 2003-2008. Gamboa, an Angolan artist, based in the United Kingdom, uses her work to recount the experiences of rural women during the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002) and her own experience growing up in the capital during the final years of the Salazar-Caetano regime. Gamboa’s syncretic approach incorporates European tin-glazing and indigenous African hand-building techniques. Early Modern Portuguese and traditional Southern Angolan material culture also guide the artist. The resulting works document a lasting urban-rural divide among Angolan women, dating back to colonial policy, liberation struggles, and civil …

The Effect Of Deer Browse On Achyranthes Japonica, Nicholas R. Seaton

Theses

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OFNicholas Seaton, for the Master of Science degree in Plant Biology, presented on December 4, 2019 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: THE EFFECT OF DEER BROWSE ON ACHYRANTHES JAPONICAMAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. David GibsonPlants respond in many ways to damage. These responses vary between sites depending on the severity and duration of the incident. One common form of damage in the forest understory is herbivory or browse. White tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been observed to change the dominant species of forests by selectively browsing palatable species in the understory. These changes in species dominance …

Differentiating Between Invasive And Native Populations Of Bighead And Silver Carp Using Ms-Aflp, Erika Renee Sarvela Dec 2020

Differentiating Between Invasive And Native Populations Of Bighead And Silver Carp Using Ms-Aflp, Erika Renee Sarvela

Theses

When a species is introduced outside their native range, the genetic diversity of the introduced population is generally decreased due to the founder effect, and the fitness of individuals in the introduced population may decrease due to inbreeding depression. Invasive species are a paradox to this paradigm because while the initial population size of an invasive species may be small in their non-native range, the individuals are able to survive, eat, and reproduce so successfully, that they have deleterious effects on native species. One mechanism that invasive species use to overcome a lack of genetic diversity and adapt to their …

An Examination Of Meat Consumption As A Pro-Environmental Behavior And Its Weak Correlation To Delay Discounting, Sarah Parkinson Dec 2020

An Examination Of Meat Consumption As A Pro-Environmental Behavior And Its Weak Correlation To Delay Discounting, Sarah Parkinson

Theses

This study presented meat consumption as an environmentally relevant behavior (ERB) and examined how the delay to an environmental loss might affect peoples’ decisions to eat meat. Participants completed a delay discounting survey where they selected what percentage of meat they would eliminate from their diet based on varying delays to rising sea levels flooding of their neighborhood. After watching a brief educational video, participants completed the survey a second time to examine whether the video had any influence on discounting rates in the post-survey. Participants also completed the 27-Item Monetary Choice Questionnaire (MCQ; Kirby & Marakovic, 1996) in order …

The Effect Of Nutritional Programming On Gut Microbiota In Broodstock And Progeny Fish, Samuel Patula Dec 2020

The Effect Of Nutritional Programming On Gut Microbiota In Broodstock And Progeny Fish, Samuel Patula

Theses

Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing animal production sector. Because the aquaculture sector is growing at rapid rates, certain materials for feed, specifically marine protein sources, are becoming increasingly expensive and unsustainable. To counteract the reliance on fishmeal (FM) and other marine protein sources in the industry plant protein (PP), specifically soybean meal (SBM), has been investigated to replace FM as a protein source. Unfortunately, SBM when given in high quantities (greater than 30%) has been shown to negatively affect fish performance including retarded growth, intestinal inflammation, reduction of spawn quality, as well as dysbiosis in the gut microbiome, most …

Peer-reviewed Articles

Heterotopic and orthotopic ovarian tissue autotransplantation techniques, currently used in humans, will become promising alternative methods for fertility preservation in domestic and wild animals. Thus, this study describes for the first time the efficiency of a heterotopic ovarian tissue autotransplantation technique in a large livestock species (i.e., horses) after ovarian fragments were exposed or not to a cooling process (4°C/24 h) and/or VEGF before grafting. Ovarian fragments were collected in vivo via an ultrasound-guided biopsy pick-up method and surgically autografted in a subcutaneous site in both sides of the neck in each mare. The blood flow perfusion at the transplantation …

Articles

We have previously demonstrated hippocampal hyperglutamatergic signaling occurs prior to plaque accumulation in AβPP/PS1 mice. Here, we evaluate 2-Amino-6-(trifluoromethoxy) benzothiazole (riluzole) as an early intervention strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD), aimed at restoring glutamate neurotransmission prior to substantial Beta amyloid (Aβ) plaque accumulation and cognitive decline. Male AβPP/PS1 mice, a model of progressive cerebral amyloidosis, were treated with riluzole from 2-6 months of age. Morris water maze, in vivo electrochemistry, and immunofluorescence were performed to assess cognition, glutamatergic neurotransmission, and pathology, respectively, at 12 months. Four months of prodromal riluzole treatment in AβPP/PS1 mice resulted in long-lasting procognitive effects and …

Toward A Rational Policy For Dealing With Marijuana Impairment – Moving Beyond “He Looked Buzzed To Me, Your Honor”, William J. Mcnichol Jr. Oct 2020

Toward A Rational Policy For Dealing With Marijuana Impairment – Moving Beyond “He Looked Buzzed To Me, Your Honor”, William J. Mcnichol Jr.

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This paper examines how marijuana impairment is currently proven, especially in states where marijuana has been legalized under state law. Much of the currently used proofs and some legislatively imposed standards are scientifically unsound and their use should be discontinued or severely limited. It is recommended that development of a valid biochemical proxy for marijuana impairment should be a priority funding item in states where marijuana is legalized.

Editing My Own Drum, Adrienne Adams Sep 2020

Editing My Own Drum, Adrienne Adams

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

The author examines her art and poetry practice exploring how the "Badlands" of Alberta, Canada in particular Áísínai'pi (Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park), are "the bones of the earth". She looks at the visual and linguistic poetry within them and examines her wording to decolonize her practice and learning/unlearning from the land and the cultures; Blackfoot and Settler, and peoples that inhabit it. She highlights how her process of editing a specific poem “My Own Drum” prompted and echoes an examination of her practice that leads to the writing of a new poem written during this process, revealing some of her findings. …

The Verge: Networks Of Intersubjective Responding For Just Sustainability Arts Educational Research, Marna Hauk, Amanda Rachel Kippen

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

Two sustainability arts scholars describe a method of data interpretation they developed for making sense of complex environmental and sustainability education research data. They “played” images and recorded a conversation in a form of arts-based intersubjective knowing. The card game process was named the Verge because of how the process promises to surface unheard voices and re-center nondominant insights and ways of knowing. It leverages Casey’s glance method with systems networks to complicate sense making in arts-based educational research. The arts scholars intermixed research data from two just sustainability education research case studies: collages from participants of a climate justice …

An Unlikely Correspondence: Gps And Body In Place, Patti Pente Sep 2020

An Unlikely Correspondence: Gps And Body In Place, Patti Pente

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This visual essay investigates the significance of GPS technology and the human body in relation to a sense of place. Framed by posthumanism, the poetic images offer an approach to transformative education through a local site. Agency of place is key to this exploration of dynamic relationships with technology, body and the earth. As a creative performance, I executed a series of movements in a place of personal significance, and then further developed the essay through visual poetry. The research is informed by an underlying assumption that creative understanding and artistic analysis can foster deeper environmental care, and although this …

Lessons From Birds, Bones, And The Body, Alexandra Fidyk, Darlene St.Georges Sep 2020

Lessons From Birds, Bones, And The Body, Alexandra Fidyk, Darlene St.Georges

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

Written as a layered pictorial script, three images—Owl, Raven, and Hummingbird—beckoned the authors. Together, they explored neglected epistemologies in many disciplines within education, the arts and humanities to deepen their understanding of what it means to live in caring relation with an animated world. By tracking the Birds’ lineages and kinships through active imagination, amplification, and circumambulation, concealed patterns and associations reveal lessons for living more consciously with repressed and expressed feminine/androgyne energies. To be more conscious of both aids in the unfolding processes central to becoming, undoing, creativity, and pedagogy. Herein an ethical challenge arises: how might we honour …

Eco-Pedagogical Wandering And Pondering In Pacific Spirit Park, Nicole Rallis Sep 2020

Eco-Pedagogical Wandering And Pondering In Pacific Spirit Park, Nicole Rallis

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This poetry emerges from my ongoing Ph.D. research and coursework at the University of British Columbia, where I am engaging in an a/r/tographic-walking inquiry on environmental sustainability and climate change. After moving to the unceded and ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples, now known as Vancouver, I began walking the forest trails of Pacific Spirit Park. Inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s (2013) pedagogical discussions about the grammar of animacy, two-eyed ways of seeing, and childlike ways of seeing, my poems pay tribute to the plant elders and more-than-human beings guiding my learning journey. My ecopedagogical wandering and pondering align …

Paying It Forward: A Gift Economy Of Poetry And Visual Art Images, Susan Gerofsky, Daniel Barney, Mira Gerard

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

As our world has changed rapidly and ineluctably with the COVID-19 pandemic, many are advocating an ethos of generosity and a gift economy, based on generative, creative offerings, as an alternative or balance to the excesses of a mainstream neoliberal exchange economy. What is the gift economy, and how does it entangle us in a fabric of mutual responsibility, obligation, creative practices and love, within the human and greater-than-human world? A Pay-It-Forward New Year's gift game amongst a group of artist/ educators, ongoing since 2014, gives rise to this meditation on the gift economy, based on Mauss, Hyde, Kimmerer, Vaughan …

Phylogenomic Analysis Of Evolutionary Relationships In Ranitomeya Poison Frogs (Amphibia: Dendrobatidae) Using Ultraconserved Elements, Morgan Renee Muell Sep 2020

Phylogenomic Analysis Of Evolutionary Relationships In Ranitomeya Poison Frogs (Amphibia: Dendrobatidae) Using Ultraconserved Elements, Morgan Renee Muell

Theses

Knowledge of phylogenetic relationships among organisms is essential for anchoring evolutionary studies. Phylogenomic studies use large amounts of genetic data in analyses, which is particularly important for highly phenotypically variable taxa that are difficult to distinguish from one another without the use of genetic data, due to the abundance of homoplasy in morphological characters typically used in morphological classification. Use of genome-scale molecular data has thus become the gold standard for identifying these phylogenetic relationships, specifically in comparison to past studies based on fewer genes. Greater quantities of genetic data, in addition to finer taxon sampling, may lead to different …

Use Of Dual Rna-Seq For Systems Biology Analysis Of Zea Mays And Aspergillus Flavus Interaction, Bryan Musungu, Deepak Bhatnagar, Sylvie Quiniou, Robert L Brown, Gary A Payne, Greg O'Brian, Ahmad M. Fakhoury, Matt Geisler Jun 2020

Use Of Dual Rna-Seq For Systems Biology Analysis Of Zea Mays And Aspergillus Flavus Interaction, Bryan Musungu, Deepak Bhatnagar, Sylvie Quiniou, Robert L Brown, Gary A Payne, Greg O'Brian, Ahmad M. Fakhoury, Matt Geisler

Publications

The interaction between Aspergillus flavus and Zea mays is complex, and the identification of plant genes and pathways conferring resistance to the fungus has been challenging. Therefore, the authors undertook a systems biology approach involving dual RNA-seq to determine the simultaneous response from the host and the pathogen. What was dramatically highlighted in the analysis is the uniformity in the development patterns of gene expression of the host and the pathogen during infection. This led to the development of a “stage of infection index” that was subsequently used to categorize the samples before down-stream system biology analysis. Additionally, we were …
