Using Giant African Pouched Rats (Cricetomys Gambianus) To Detect Landmines, Alan Poling, Bart J. Weetjens, Christophe Cox, Negussie W. Beyene, Andrew Sully
The Psychological Record
Within the past decade, giant pouched rats have been used successfully to detect landmines. This manuscript summarizes how these rats are trained and used operationally. The information provided is intended to be of practical value toward strengthening best practices in using Cricetomys for humanitarian purposes while simultaneously ensuring the well-being of those animals.

Bird Responses To Bottomland Forest Restoration In The Cache River Watershed, Jeff Hoover
Bird Responses To Bottomland Forest Restoration In The Cache River Watershed, Jeff Hoover
Cache River Symposium
Birds serve as a useful group of organisms for measuring the effects and success of bottomland forest restoration activities. This presentation will highlight how restoration activities such as off-channel wetland restoration and re-forestation that reduces forest fragmentation benefit breeding birds. In addition, I will discuss how long-term songbird research in the Cache River watershed is allowing us to answer some challenging questions including: If you build it, will they come?; and Do migratory songbird kids produced in the Cache return to breed in the Cache? Finally, I will briefly mention some of our ongoing research including bird use of canebrakes …
Enforcing Restrictive Covenants In Illinois: Is The Legitimate-Business-Interest Test Necessary?, Kelly M. Murray
Enforcing Restrictive Covenants In Illinois: Is The Legitimate-Business-Interest Test Necessary?, Kelly M. Murray
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
For over thirty years, Illinois courts have applied the legitimate-business-interest test when analyzing whether a restrictive covenant in restraint of trade is valid. In applying the legitimate-business-interest test, courts have cited to Illinois Supreme Court precedent as support for its origin. The Illinois Supreme Court, however, has never mentioned the legitimate-business-interest test by name. The Illinois Appellate Court for the Fourth District has recently rejected the legitimate-business-interest test, stating that it has no basis in Illinois precedent and was created “out of whole cloth.” This Comment argues that Illinois courts should not follow the Fourth District’s abandonment of the legitimate-business-interest …
Down Kerouac's Road To Pixar's Up, Walter C. Metz
Down Kerouac's Road To Pixar's Up, Walter C. Metz
Publications
This essay seeks to understand the startling image of Carl Fredricksen launching his house into the air using children’s helium balloons in Pixar’s animated feature, Up (2009). The film interrogates successful adulthood via the figure of the road, both in its literary manifestation in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957) and cinematically, via The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939). Paradise Falls itself, like Oz before it, is a letdown just like the “sad paradise” of On the Road. Carl loses faith not only in his boyhood movie hero, the travelogue adventurer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), but the cinema itself.

Methodological Developments In The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis For Reconstructing Paleodiets, Kevin A. Johnston
Methodological Developments In The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis For Reconstructing Paleodiets, Kevin A. Johnston
Research Papers
Understanding the composition of paleodiets is crucially important for the archaeological investigation of lifeways and subsistence practices within ancient societies. Among the numerous research methods capable of investigating various elements of paleodiets, the use of stable isotope analysis has become increasingly popular. Advantages of this research technique include its ability to recognize multiple types of dietary inputs through the examination of stable carbon and stable nitrogen isotopes, and to investigate dietary composition and variation at an individual level. This research paper examines how this methodology has developed through time. Specific attention will be directed toward both the procedural advances that …

The capacity to exhibit generalized sameness-difference judgments is a hallmark of cognition that is regularly exhibited by humans. As yet, that capacity has not been well documented in New World monkeys such as the capuchin (Cebus apel/a). This article presents data obtained with 6 capuchin monkeys with a variety of procedures that might lead to gEmeralized identity matching-to-sample (MTS) in this species, reporting part of a research program conducted to evaluate methods for assessing the species' relational learning capacity. Our working hypothesis is that past failures to demonstrate relational learning have been caused by procedural insufficiency rather than a lack …

An Informal Analysis Of Career And Technical Student Organization Competitive Event Competencies Via Kolb’S Experiential Learning Theory, Mark D. Threeton, John C. Ewing, Robert W. Clark
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
In an effort to provide Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) advisors with additional insight on enhancing the educational experience for students, this paper examined the national contest competencies of the Health Occupations Society of America (HOSA) Veterinary Assisting Career Development Event, the national FFA Organization Floriculture Career Development Event and the SkillsUSA Automotive Service Technology Career Development Event to determine if potential exists for a holistic approach to competition preparation via the alignment with the four modes of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle. The results indicated that preparation for competitive events in each of the respective CTSOs lend themselves to …
