South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1973
It is widely recognized that the most important factor in growth of a fermenting organism is the moisture of or relative humidity (RH) surrounding a natural substrate. Mold spores have different minimum water requirements at different temperatures and the presence or absence of nutrients also affects water requirements for growth. Hence, three experiments were designed to investigate the influence of moisture content on the nutritive value of the fermented preparations for chick growth.

Supplying Protein For Milk Production, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Supplying Protein For Milk Production, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Dairy cattle have specific requirements for protein. A lack or deficiency of dietary protein will greatly depress growth in young animals and cause a reduction in milk production in lactating cows. Gestation may be interrupted if the deficiency is severe.
Supplying Energy For Milk Production, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Supplying Energy For Milk Production, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
The first requirement, under most conditions, for an economical dairy feeding program is to provide the milking herd all the top quality forage it will eat. Most harvested forages in South Dakota supply only enough energy for body maintenance and about 10 to 20 pounds of milk per cow per day without additional grain, therefore, feeding grains and concentrates is necessary to obtain maximum milk production. Normally, as forage quality decreases consumption decreases, and milk production is reduced unless the cow receives additional energy from a grain ration.

Dried Whey As An Additive For Alfalfa Haylage And As A Grain Supplement For Dairy Cows, Sitakantha Dash
Dried Whey As An Additive For Alfalfa Haylage And As A Grain Supplement For Dairy Cows, Sitakantha Dash
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research was conducted to explore the possibility of utilizing surplus whey in dairy cattle rations. Four experiments determined the influence of whey on preservation, digestibility and feeding value of alfalfa haylage. The last experiment was initiated to evaluate dried whey as a grain supplement. When dried whole whey was added at O, 1, and 10% levels to reconstituted alfalfa haylage (chopped baled hay plus 50% water) and preserved in sealed metal containers, it reduced pH, decreased acetic acid, and increased lactic acid. The general pattern of fermentation was better in whey-treated haylages than in corresponding untreated haylages. An in …
Partial Characterization Of Animal Growth Inhibitors From Soybeans, Joseph Richard Uckert
Partial Characterization Of Animal Growth Inhibitors From Soybeans, Joseph Richard Uckert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The pH 4. 4 supernatant from raw (unheated) soybean meal was separated into 5 fractions on a Sephadex G-25 column in efforts to isolate the animal growth inhibitors present soybeans. Each fraction was added to the diet of growing mice and growth inhibition (GI) activity was determined by comparing their_ growth rates to g1"'owth rates achieved on an autoclaved soybean meal diet. Fractions I and II each contained about 50% of the GI activity, with a trace in fraction III and none in fractions IV and V. Only fraction I contained trypsin inhibitor and caused pancreatic enlargement. Fraction I was …
The Vitamin E Status Of Lactating Dairy Cows After Receiving Stored Feeds For 15 Months, Marc Dellhime Eckhart
The Vitamin E Status Of Lactating Dairy Cows After Receiving Stored Feeds For 15 Months, Marc Dellhime Eckhart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The trend in dairying in recent years has been towards more confinement housing and higher producing animals. Such confinement housing often leads to year-around feeding of stored feeds, such as silage, haylage, and hay with no pasture grazing or feeding of freshly cut forages. Since stored feeds contain substantially less vitamin E than those same forage when freshly cut or grazed, it may be important to re-evaluate the vitamin E status of cows fed stored feeds continuously. The requirement of cattle for vitamin E are largely unknown. The one study involving adult cattle, conducted 25 years ago, found that 1.82 …
Amino Acid Supplementation Of Opaque-2 Corn For Growing Pigs, Reid V. Merrill
Amino Acid Supplementation Of Opaque-2 Corn For Growing Pigs, Reid V. Merrill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Protein needs and amino acid requirements are of major interest in the swine industry today. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on these subjects and more is sure to follow. Amino acid content and balance are now being recognized as more important factors in swine nutrition than total protein alone. Recently, the development of opaque-2 corn with higher amounts of lysine and tryptophan than normal corn has stimulated interest in its presence in simplified diets to supply the amino acid needs of swine. Performance of pigs fed opaque-2 corn has generally been superior to that of pigs fed …
Some Effects Of Dietary Fats Or Copper On Growth And Lipid Composition Of Turkeys And Rats, Richard A. Nelson
Some Effects Of Dietary Fats Or Copper On Growth And Lipid Composition Of Turkeys And Rats, Richard A. Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the past decade there has been a large increase of interest in what causes heart attacks. Heart attacks are claiming the lives of more and more people each year, but the exact cause(s) for this increase have not been found. Some research, however, has shown that high serum cholesterol levels are correlated with arterial plaque formation. Plaque formation has, in turn, been implicated in causing myocardial infarction and reduced blood flow to areas or the heart muscle. This results in ischemia or oxygen deprivation to that area. This condition often results in death of the individual if not …
In Vitro Digestibility Of Diallel And Polycross Progenies Of Intermediate Wheatgrass, Ronald Theodore Thaden
In Vitro Digestibility Of Diallel And Polycross Progenies Of Intermediate Wheatgrass, Ronald Theodore Thaden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous forage plant evaluation by breeders has centered around agronomic factors that determine persistence and forage and seed production with little consideration given to utilization. Forages must be consumed by animals for utilization, so forage quality as it relates to the animal should be an important evaluation factor. Plants and animals function together in determining forage quality. Such plant characters as leafiness, coarseness, height and physiological age are easily observed and deternd.ne quality to a degree. Other components such as digestibility, lignin and protein are just as important, but cannot be determined as easily. Animal acceptance and consumption are also …

Supplying Minerals And Vitamins For Milk Production, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Supplying Minerals And Vitamins For Milk Production, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
The minerals that are required to perform essential functions in the dairy cow's body are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, iodine, cobalt, zinc, manganese, copper, iron, selenium, and molybdenum. Those in bold type are termed the macro mineral elements since they are required in relatively large amounts compared to the others which are needed in trace amounts. Although any of these may be deficient in the feed supply in certain areas, the macro elements constitute 70 to 80 percent of all inorganic material in the body and are the ones we are most concerned about under South Dakota …
