Field Peas In Diets Fed To Swine, Hans H. Stein Apr 2006

Field Peas In Diets Fed To Swine, Hans H. Stein

SDSU Extension Special Series

Field peas (Pisum sativum L.) have a nutrient profile intermediate between corn and soybean meal. The digestibility of most nutrients in field peas is similar to that in soybean meal, and the concentration of digestible energy in field peas is similar to that in corn.
Although the digestibility of most nutrients may be improved by thermal treatment, field peas are usually fed to swine without prior heat treatment. Pigs tolerate field peas well and the palatability of diets containing field peas is not different from diets containing only corn and soybean meal.
Recent research with U.S.-grown field peas indicates that …

Cost Of Gain Comparison Between Cattle Finished At Opportunities Farm In South Dakota And Cattle Finished In Kansas, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe Jan 2006

Cost Of Gain Comparison Between Cattle Finished At Opportunities Farm In South Dakota And Cattle Finished In Kansas, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Cost of gain is an important factor in determining the profit or loss of feeder cattle. For comparison of cost of gain between cattle finished in Southeast South Dakota and cattle finished in Southwest Kansas closeouts of cattle fed at the Opportunities Farm near Lennox, SD were compared with information published by Kansas State University in the monthly Focus on Feedlots. Cattle feeders in the Midwest, including South Dakota, are competitive with cattle feeders in other regions of the United States due to this regions lower ration costs and cost of gain.

Effect Of Single Vs. Pulsing Doses Of Estradiol 17-Β And Trenbolone Acetate In Finishing Steers Fed A High Concentrate Diet, Sandi L. Parr, Robbi H. Pritchard, Kelly W. Bruns

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

The effect of implant dosing pattern on anabolic response was evaluated in predominately Angus steers (n=192). Steers, except the control, were implanted with 1 of 3 different implant strategies. Cumulatively all implant treatments received a dose of 24 mg estradiol 17-β (E2) and 120 mg trenbolone acetate (TBA). Dosing patterns were 8 mg E2 and 40 mg TBA given 3 times; 12 mg E2 and 60 mg TBA given 2 times or 24 mg E2 and 120 mg TBA given 1 time. Implanted cattle had heavier body weights, increased average daily gain, and lower feed conversion compared to non-implanted controls. …

Effect Of Increasing Dietary Concentration Of Dried Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Phosphorus Balance In Finishing Steers, Clint Benson, Cody Wright, Josh Mccarthick, Robbi Pritchard

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Eight crossbred steers (initial BW = 972.2 ± 33.5 lb) were used in a replicated Latin square design to determine the effect of increasing dietary concentrations of dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) on phosphorus (P) balance in finishing steers. The control (CON) diet contained 79% dry rolled corn (DRC), 10% cottonseed hulls, 6% soybean meal (SBM), and 5% mineral supplement (total diet P concentration = 0.26%). In each of the remaining three diets, all of the SBM and a portion of the DRC were removed and replaced with DDGS at 12%, 24%, and 36% of the diet (total diet …

Cold Stress And Newborn Calves, Lanette Butler, Russ Daly, Cody Wright

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Calf survival in northern climates can be a challenge. Death losses after birth may be due to one or more of several factors including infectious agents, dystocia, genetic abnormalities, and environmental stress.2 Cow nutrition also influences calf survivability2,3,7 as well as the timing and type of colostrum intake.8 These factors, whether singular events or in combination, dramatically impact calf survival.

Using Ddgs In Mixed Lamb Diets, Jeff Held Jan 2006

Using Ddgs In Mixed Lamb Diets, Jeff Held

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Dried Distiller Grain with Solubles (DDGS) is a palatable feed ingredient for growing/finishing lamb diets, serving as the supplemental protein source. This co-product from the ethanol production industry has a crude protein content of approximately 30% and its physical form is a meal. With the growth of the ethanol industry in the Midwest there is greater local access to DDGS. This has prompted more sheep producers to explore the use of this feed ingredient to lower production costs in lamb finishing enterprises. Sheep research feeding trials have been conducted at SDSU to provide information requested by producers.

Distillers Grains For Dairy Cattle, D. J. Schingoethe, K. F. Kalscheur, A. D. Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Feeding distillers grains is nothing new; such products have been fed to cattle for more than a century. What is new, however, are the many ethanol plants now in the upper Midwest and the increased interest in feeding their co-product, distillers grains. This report is an overview of the nutritional value of distillers grains and gives some guidelines for feeding.

Acute Interstitial Pneumonia (Aip)* In Range Cattle, Cooperative Extension Service Jan 2006

Acute Interstitial Pneumonia (Aip)* In Range Cattle, Cooperative Extension Service

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

AIP is an acute respiratory disease of range cattle that occurs following movement from poor pasture to lush pasture/forage. Yearlings are less susceptible than mature cows, and calves are almost never affected. It appears that sheep (and horses) are not susceptible or are much less susceptible to AIP. The disease occurs within 10 days of movement to improved forage. Pastures of any sort (grass or legume) as well as annual crops (corn, sudan grass, etc.) can support AIP. AIP also can be seen when animals preferentially graze lush growth in lowland meadows or water discharge areas, even if the remainder …

Evaluation Of Reproduction And Blood Metabolites In Beef Heifers Fed Dried Distillers Grains Plus Solubles And Soybean Hulls During Late Gestation, Chanda L. Engel, H. H. Trey Patterson, Ron Haigh, Jason Johnson, Mindy Hubert, Brandi Perry, George A. Perry

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) contain a significant amount of both undegradable intake protein and fat, which have both been shown to increase reproductive performance when supplemented to heifers during gestation. The mechanisms leading to enhanced reproduction when fat or UIP are supplemented have not been fully defined. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate DDGS or soybean hulls (SBH) fed during the last trimester of gestation on circulating concentrations of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and reproductive efficiency. Ninety-five crossbred heifers were grouped by expected calving date, BW, BCS, and randomly assigned to DDGS …

Sauger Population Ecology In Three Missouri River Mainstem Reservoirs, Brian D. S. Graeb Jan 2006

Sauger Population Ecology In Three Missouri River Mainstem Reservoirs, Brian D. S. Graeb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sauger Sander canadensis populations have experienced widespread declines across much of their range. Factors suspected to contribute to these declines include hybridization, exploitation, loss of spawning areas, and general habitat alterations associated with regulated rivers. Several sauger populations within the Missouri River basin are also experiencing similar declines, particularly in the headwaters of Montana, and the lower basin states of Nebraska and Missouri. However, sauger populations in many of the reservoirs in South Dakota (between Montana and the lower basin) have relatively stable populations. Given the paucity of information on factors influencing sauger population ecology in general, and Missouri River …

Economic Evaluation Of Integrating Biodiesel Production With A Dry Mill Ethanol Plant, Steven Bly Jan 2006

Economic Evaluation Of Integrating Biodiesel Production With A Dry Mill Ethanol Plant, Steven Bly

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Biodiesei is produced by adding methyl ester products to diesel fuel. Base catalyzed transesterification of oil with methanol is the primary process used today. Current dry mill ethanol production facilities allow the com oil to pass through the process where it becomes part of the dried distiller's grain with solubles (DDGS), a lower valued feed co-product. This study evaluated the economic feasibility of integrating a biodiesel production facility with existing and/or new dry mill ethanol plants. The following methods for com oil separation were considered; hexane extraction of com oil from the dried distiller's grain stream, initial germ separation and …

Oilseed Crops In Beef Cattle Rations, Julie Walker Jan 2006

Oilseed Crops In Beef Cattle Rations, Julie Walker

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Oilseed crops are produced throughout South Dakota for human consumption. However, when unpredictable environments create immature, frost-damaged, or otherwise poor quality oilseeds unfit for human consumption or if market prices are low, feeding livestock is an alternative outlet for oilseed crops. Meals produced from the processing of these crops have been used for years in livestock rations; however, the unprocessed whole seed is the primary focus here.
