A Comparison Of Alfalfa, Sweet Clover, And Sudan Grass As Pasture Crops For Dairy Cows, T.M. Olson, B.L. Robinson
A Comparison Of Alfalfa, Sweet Clover, And Sudan Grass As Pasture Crops For Dairy Cows, T.M. Olson, B.L. Robinson
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Dairying is recognized as one of the major farm enterprises in the Northwest. Over much of this area conditions for producing winter feeds are very favorable but moisture conditions are such that it is difficult to maintain satisfactory pastures for dairy cows during the summer months. Native pastures, where available, will carry the herd in a satisfactory manner for a short time in the spring but these pastures soon dry up and are unsatisfactory during a large part of the pasture season. These conditions make it necessary for dairymen in this region to rely on cultivated crops for summer pasture. …

Rural Health Situation In South Dakota, W.F. Kumlien
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
In consequence, the general plan of the bulletin in describing the conditions and findings of the study, has been to organize it around three related phases. Part I is more or less introductory, showing the relationship of the new health movement as applied specifically to rural South Dakota conditions. Part II deals with the location, number, and distribution of health agencies in the state. Part III attempts to describe more intensively the more important health conditions in Brookings county as being typical of the eastern South Dakota situation, together with suggestions for correcting certain rural health inequalities.

Comparative Metabolism Of Several Calcareous Minerals In Poultry Feeding, John T. Tripp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In part one of this study it was found that chickens when given oyster shells, in addition to their regular diet, produced a greater number of eggs and eggs of greater shell strength than did the chickens that were given the other calcareous materials used in this experiment. Oyster shell was followed in the order of their effectiveness by clam shells, Black Hills limestone, Nenno chalk stone, and Wisconsin dolomitie limestone.

Barley Production In South Dakota, K.H. Klages
Barley Production In South Dakota, K.H. Klages
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Barley ranks next to corn and oats in importance as a feed crop in South Dakota. Its production is increasing. This increase may well proceed at the expense of acreage now devoted to oats production. Barley will on most farms yield more feed per acre than can be obtained with oats. Barley is an important crop over the eastern half of South Dakota with production centered in the east-central portion of the state.

Posture And Undergarments, Anita Andrews
Posture And Undergarments, Anita Andrews
SDSU Extension Circulars
Beauty of line in dress cannot be attained by the dress alone. Ready-to-wear salesladies realize this when they say "This dress will look much better when you have it on." It takes the lines and curves of the body to set off lines of the dress. Few women have perfect figures; yet few women carry to the best advantage the figure they have. As long as women feel that a slouching figure is the shape that is attractive, beauty in body lines is lost. The figure and undergarments form the foundation for the outer clothing. Undergarments are just as essential …
Better Home Bedding, Mary A. Covert
Better Home Bedding, Mary A. Covert
SDSU Extension Circulars
If you do not "sleep well o'nights", the cause may be found in the bed or the bedding. When one changes to a certain position, either erect or reclining, numerous changes begin to take place within the body. The fluids tend to settle in the lowest part of the glands. The large organs change their relative positions. They press upon each other and pull upon the ligaments which fasten them to body walls. The weight of the body presses upon large areas of skin and muscles. The skin under pressure is in such close contact with the bedding that ventilation …
A Decade Of Crop Yields From Vivian Farm, A.N. Hume
A Decade Of Crop Yields From Vivian Farm, A.N. Hume
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
These pages put down roundly ten years of measured yields from crops produced at the Vivian farm. These yields serve as the best answer to many inquiries which come from farmers and others asking what crops to produce and how to produce them over a wide area. Many questions not · directly answered by these data will be clarified by careful study of them. The attempt will be made here to put down facts about farming from which others may build their own opinions about farm practices within the area represented under the conditions prevalent at Vivian.

Value Of Grinding Grains And Roughages For Livestock, J.W. Wilson, R.L. Patty, T. Wright, T.M. Olson
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This experiment was conducted in cooperation with the departments of Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Husbandry of South Dakota State College. The department of Agricultural Engineering ground the grains and roughages with a burr grinder. For power a tractor was used, such as is found on any farm where grinding is practiced. The departments of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Husbandry fed these ground grains and roughages to livestock of the different kinds. There has been for some time, and there is today a demand for information along these lines because some farmers who have purchased tractors to assist with …

The South Dakota Poultry House plan that is described in this circular was designed form study of plans from other states, trials of houses on the College Poultry Farm, and after the suggestions of Professor G. L. Stevenson and Clara M. Sutter. The house is designed for the rigorous climate of the north central section of the United States. In the design of the house the cost item has been kept in mind constantly. A better house could be designed and built but not for the reasonable cost of this one. This house is designed for the majority of South …

Economic Adjustments On Farms In Southeastern South Dakota, R.H. Rogers
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Farms located in Lincoln, Clay and Union counties near Beresford, South Dakota, were studied in detail during 1928. The results of the study furnished the basis for this bulletin. Farms representative of size, practices, tenure and present farming systems were selected so that the data obtained would be of greatest value. Receipts and expenditures, labor, feed and other requirements common on the farms studied have been used in outlining the suggested systems and in making up the budgets included.
