Relation Of Rate Of Gain To Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle, Leo E. Lucas
Relation Of Rate Of Gain To Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle, Leo E. Lucas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between rate and efficiency of gain, and the environmental factors affecting them, are of major importance in a selection program. Selection within recent years has tended to be mainly for improvement of breed type. As a result of this selection, improvement in type has taken place in the beef breeds, but a comparable improvement in performance does not seem to have occurred. It then seems likely that is breeders in the future intend to improve the performance of the beef breeds, they cannot do it by selection for type alone. A breeding program based on selection for performance, …
Methods Of Storing Alfalfa For Fattening Cattle, Leonard Herman Timmerman
Methods Of Storing Alfalfa For Fattening Cattle, Leonard Herman Timmerman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cattle feeders and ranchers of South Dakota winter and fatten a great number of cattle on harvested grasses and legumes. The forages are stored for winter feeding both as hay and as silage. Alfalfa is one of the important crops in both the eastern and western portions of the state. The use of alfalfa, particularly as silage, in cattle feeding is increasing. This has raised many questions regarding the efficiency of alfalfa silage in relation to hay. A number of experiments have been conducted at various stations in which the feeding value of grass and/or legume silage has been compared …
Feeding Minerals To Livestock Important, Lawrence B. Embry
Feeding Minerals To Livestock Important, Lawrence B. Embry
Agricultural Experiment Station Animal Husbandry Pamphlets
Minerals have many important functions in the body and their needs in livestock rations have been known for many years. Bone and teeth are composed chiefly of minerals which are necessary for their proper growth and development. In addition to these functions, minerals are necessary constituents of soft tissue and body fluids and play important roles in the regulation of body processes. In spite of the known need for minerals for a long time, much remains to be learned about specific requirements, mineral content of feeds, mineral balances and factors affecting these. It is recognized that the requirements of an …

1953 Farmer's Income Tax, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College
SDSU Extension Circulars
Every person whose gross income during the year is $600 or more MUST file a return even though no tax is due. Gross income is total income (subject to tax) before any expenses are deducted. If at least two-thirds of your gross income is from farming and your business year starts January 1, you have two choices. Either, (a) File your return and pay the tax on or before January 31, 1954; or (b) File an estimate of your tax and pay this amount by January 15, 1954, then file your return and pay and balance due by March 15, …

3. Effective methods of drying
4. The extent of mold growth and its effect on the corn
5. The chemical changes that take place in the soft corn when stored
6. Its feeding value for livestock and poultry as compared with hard corn

There is no surer way to show / The warmth of feelings that we know, / Than by the gifts our hands create / In hopes our friends appreciate / It's not the cost nor amount of time / Put in the gift to make it fine; / But thought and care—that certain touch / Completes the gift that's liked so much. / If you'd be happy Christmas Day / Then give some happiness away; / For as you give, you're sure to receive / The best in joys of Christmas Eve. - K.S.N.

Control Household Insects, John A. Lofgren
Control Household Insects, John A. Lofgren
SDSU Extension Circulars
The development and general acceptance of the new insecticides has greatly helped housewives in their battles with insects found in the home. Yet the use of these chemicals does not rule out the importance of sanitation and good housekeeping in preventing the establishment of these pests. Sanitation is a basic principle of pest control. Insects found in South Dakota homes destroy and contaminate foods and ruin fabrics. Some attack our dwellings and other buildings; others bite or annoy humans, carrying diseases and causing irritation or secondary infections. The presence of other insects merely constitutes a nuisance. Even the most well-kept …
Cobalt Salt In Lamb Rations, R. M. Jordan, H. Weakly
Cobalt Salt In Lamb Rations, R. M. Jordan, H. Weakly
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The Animal Husbandry department of the South Dakota State College Experiment Station conducted a series of lamb feeding trials at Brookings during 1948-49. In cooperation with the United States Field Station at Newell, additional feeding trials were conducted during the years 1949 through 1951 in order to obtain more information as to the need for cobalt in our livestock rations. Inasmuch as the conditions vary greatly in these two areas, the discussion of the feeding trials conducted at Brookings and at Newell, South Dakota, will be treated separately.

Grasses And Legumes: Production And Management In South Dakota, W. W. Worzella, L. O. Finfe, J. G. Ross, M. W. Adams
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Forage crops rank far ahead of any other crop in importance in South Dakota. At present, more than 28,400,000 acres, twice the acreage of all other crops combined, are in grasses and legumes. These furnish a major portion of feed for our grazing animals.
Since more and more emphasis is being placed on grassland farming, considerable acreages of previously cropped land are being seeded back to forage crops. In recent years the state agricultural experiment stations and the United States Department of Agriculture have introduced and developed species of grasses and legumes which are superior to our native types for …
Urea For Pregnant Ewes, R. M. Jordan
Urea For Pregnant Ewes, R. M. Jordan
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The objectives of this experiment were to determine the relative value of:
1. Protein supplements containing urea compared to soybean meal for pregnant ewes
2. Urea at the 5 and 10 percent levels in protein supplements
3. Wheat mids and dehydrated alfalfa meal in protein supplements containing urea at 5 and 10 percent level.
The results of three wintering trials with pregnant ewes are reported here as an aid to stockmen in evaluating production rations suitable to South Dakota conditions.
Soils Of Clay County South Dakota, G. J. Buntley, W. C. Bourne, F. C. Westin
Soils Of Clay County South Dakota, G. J. Buntley, W. C. Bourne, F. C. Westin
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The Clay County soil survey is an inventory of the soil resources found in that area. It is designed to help answer questions such as: What soil types do I have on my farm? Do different soil types need different management practices? If so, what are the suggested practices? Are certain crops better adapted to different soil types? Do soil types have different yield potentials?
Published soil surveys are made up of two parts: a map and a report. The Clay County soil map, bound in the middle of the report, shows the location and extent of the various soils …
