Some Factors Affecting The Stability Of Carotene In Mixed Feeds, A.W. Halverson, C.M. Hendrick Jan 1955

Some Factors Affecting The Stability Of Carotene In Mixed Feeds, A.W. Halverson, C.M. Hendrick

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

The instability of carotene has been a matter of concern in the feeding industry for a number of years. Since green plant preparations such as alfalfa meal are among the most economical sources of provitamin A, they have received the most attention in carotene storage loss studies. Rather effective methods have been developed to reduce carotene losses in such products during their storage. However, carotene stability in mixed feeds or practical diets, an important phase of the problem, has received little attention until recently. Sources other than dehydrated plant products are also used as carotene additives, and investigations should include …

70 Years Of Engineering 1884 - 1951, Division Of Engineering Jan 1955

70 Years Of Engineering 1884 - 1951, Division Of Engineering

State, University and Departmental Histories

On a March day in 1883 a group of pioneers from all sections of Dakota
Territory assembled on the present site of State College to break
ground for the erection of a building. The Territorial legislature had appropriated$20,000 to build the College. This marked the beginning of what is
today South Dakota's largest institution of higher education.
It was a day of celebration; there was thanksgiving for the progress already
made in the new territory, and there were prophetic visions of the
future. In the best oratorical style of seventy years ago they announced
those visions, bravely predicting a college …

The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Alfalfa Hay In A Growing Fattening Ration For Pigs, Laverne J. Kortan Jan 1955

The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Alfalfa Hay In A Growing Fattening Ration For Pigs, Laverne J. Kortan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota farmers each year produce approximately 2 million bead of hogs which are valued at 75 to 100 million dollars. The income derived from the sale of hogs makes up approximately 20 percent of their cash fars income. The financial return received by the swine producer is an indication of his success. This success will depend in part upon the kind and cost of ration and the gaining ability of the pigs receiving this ration. The most important factor affecting profits in pork production is the cost of production. Recent studies indicate that approximately 80 percent of the total …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Antibiotics On Fecal Microflora Of Chicks, Robert C. Halseth Jan 1955

A Study Of The Relationship Of Antibiotics On Fecal Microflora Of Chicks, Robert C. Halseth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The advent of antibiotics in animal nutrition placed new emphasis on the intestinal microflors. E.L.R. Stokstad (38) presented the following observations as indicating that the growth promoting effect of antibiotics was due to the action on the bacteria of the intestinal trace. “(1) Antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents of widely varying chemical structure are effective. This precludes the possibility of their being incorporated into any growth essential for the animal. (2) The ineffectiveness of antibiotics in increasing growth in the germ free animal. (3) The ineffectiveness of aureomycin in increasing growth of the developing chick embryo. (4) The effect of sanitation …

A Survey Of The Occupational Status Of Post World War Ii Agriculture Education Graduates Of South Dakota State College, Harry Franz Jan 1955

A Survey Of The Occupational Status Of Post World War Ii Agriculture Education Graduates Of South Dakota State College, Harry Franz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today facts are demanded by everyone and for every purpose. To some extent, every activity of our life is governed by the results of a study of books and periodicals. This is true of a farmer cultivating his land, feeding his livestock, or purchasing his machinery. It is also true of persons in other vocations; the minister, the banker, the public official, the educator, the business man, and many others. When the vocational agriculture teacher has a problem he consults a “Handbook on Teaching Vocational Agriculture” which is a collection of organized facts based on experience. The efficiency in teaching …

Entertaining Informally In Your Home, Don Clayton Nov 1954

Entertaining Informally In Your Home, Don Clayton

SDSU Extension Circulars

Today fussy, proper parties are definitely out of style. Truly "smart" people just won't take the time to spend their precious leisure moments "putting on the dog". When one studies the kind of home architecture and appliances, and the casual clothing that "sell" and the types of recreation that are popular he soon realizes that simplicity and naturalness are the modern keynote for leisure time living. It suggests a search for an antidote to the strain and tension that involves most of us-in this business of "making a living". The front doors on most of our homes swing inward. This …

Chemical Problems Of Farm Water Supplies, G. F. Gastler, O. E. Olson Nov 1954

Chemical Problems Of Farm Water Supplies, G. F. Gastler, O. E. Olson

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

The water supply on South Dakota farms is a source of many problems. In most cases, it is a difficult and expensive operation to obtain an adequate supply at a desirable location. Once obtained, many problems of plumbing and maintenance are left to be solved. Although the installation and maintenance may be expensive and difficult, the question of water quality may be even more important. The chemical quality of the ground waters (wells and springs) of the state in variable. In a few instances, well waters containing very low concentrations of dissolved materials have been found, but most have fairly …

Farmer's 1954 Income Tax, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College Nov 1954

Farmer's 1954 Income Tax, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

Every person whose gross income during the year is $600 or more MUST file a return even though no tax is due (except that any individual who has attained the age of 65 before the close of his taxable year is required to make a return only if he has for the taxable year a gross income of $1,200 or more). Gross income is total income (subject to tax) before any expenses are deducted. If at least two-thirds of your gross income is from farming and your business year starts January 1, you have two choices. Either, (a) File your …

A Market News Service For Livestock Auctions In South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek Oct 1954

A Market News Service For Livestock Auctions In South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Auction sales are an important marketing medium for livestock in this country today. This method of selling is not a new or a novel one. The selling of livestock through auctions was probably adapted from Great Britain, and first used in this country in the early nineteenth century. These sales were most often held to dispose of imported and domestic breeding stock. The first regularly scheduled auction sale with publicly consigned merchandise was established at Union, Iowa, in 1904. From this beginning the number of livestock auctions increased, especially after 1930, This increase was particularly rapid in the twelve Western …

Music And You, Adele Clark Sudlow

SDSU Extension Circulars

After you have selected the best phonograph that you can afford, preferably one with three speeds (78 rpm, 45 rpm, and 33½ rpm), you are ready to begin your home record library. Long-playing records withstand rougher treatment than do the 78's, are easier to store, and will play up to thirty-two minutes per side without interruptions. They're not literally "unbreakable," but they are tough.

South Dakota's Farm Accident Toll, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College Jun 1954

South Dakota's Farm Accident Toll, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

Facts regarding farm accidents are scarce. A suggestion was made by the state safety director, Carroll Stinson, to the agricultural engineering department that a newspaper clipping survey be made to determine in what areas an educational program might best be developed to cut down on the occupational hazards of modern agriculture. One hundred fourteen of the 185 weekly and eight of the 12 daily papers cooperated in making this survey. Agricultural engineering students clipped out accident reports each week from these papers from November 1, 1952 through October 31, 1953. This survey was restricted to on-the-farm accidents except those accidents …
