Management Practices And Crop Yields On The Lower Yellowstone Project--1949, Rex D. Helfinstine Aug 1955

Management Practices And Crop Yields On The Lower Yellowstone Project--1949, Rex D. Helfinstine

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Irrigation has been proposed for more than a million acres of land in North Dakota and South Dakota under the Pick-Sloan plan. What results have been obtained from irrigation of comparable areas? What were the experiences of farmers in these areas? The Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project in western North Dakota and eastern Montana, which has been under irrigation since 1909, is comparable in many respects to the areas proposed for new irrigation. Knowledge of the results of irrigation on the Lower Yellowstone will be helpful in determining the economic justification for irrigating other areas in the Dakotas. The purpose of …

Meet Music, Marvel Labrie May 1955

Meet Music, Marvel Labrie

SDSU Extension Circulars

"Confidentially, this long-haired stuff is not for me. I don't really know a thing about music, and I can't carry a tune in a bushel basket." With this pessimistic statement, many of us close the door to a whole new world of enjoyment. It does seem confusing when we hear people conversing in longhandled terms about symphonies, sonatas, oratorios, writing styles, and the like. Immediately, we become frightened by their apparent knowledge of music. Don't be misled by that big talk, which may even be done just to impress you. Knowledge of those terms doesn't mean that they enjoy music …

A Progress Report: Agricultural Research At The Range Field Station, South Dakota State College Experiment Station, Cottonwood, S.D., F. Whetzal, F. C. Westin, G. J. Buntley, B. L. Barge May 1955

A Progress Report: Agricultural Research At The Range Field Station, South Dakota State College Experiment Station, Cottonwood, S.D., F. Whetzal, F. C. Westin, G. J. Buntley, B. L. Barge

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

South Dakota, west of the Missouri River, may be divided into three distinct regions. The most northerly of these is a series of benches, plateaus, and isolated buttes underlain by both sandstone and shale. These soils range from sandy loams to clays but are predominantly loamy. The most southerly region is a series of plateaus and broad benches underlain by silty, sandy, and clayey strata. These soils range from very sandy on the Nebraska border to silty and clayey at the southern tributaries of the White River. Between the two just described lies the third region. This is the region …

Economic Potentials Of Irrigated And Dryland Farming In South Dakota, R. D. Helfinstine May 1955

Economic Potentials Of Irrigated And Dryland Farming In South Dakota, R. D. Helfinstine

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

This study attempts to answer these questions, but the answers should be considered preliminary only as drainability and final determination of irrigability of parts of the area have not been established. In addition, as irrigation is not in use in the area at present, returns from irrigation can only be estimated on the basis of experience from other irrigated areas. Figures used in the analysis on operation and maintenance charges, construction, and costs of grading land are estimates furnished by the Bureau of Reclamation, and are subject to revision

Farm Fly Control, W. M. Rogoff May 1955

Farm Fly Control, W. M. Rogoff

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The procedures available for fly control on the farm must be adapted to the particular problem at hand. Control of flies on stock is easy if the infestation in one of horn flies occur in significant numbers. Fly control in and around buildings generally requires a combination of many types of treatment. Removal of breeding places is always important. Residual sprays, bait application, or both also are usually needed depending on the size of the infestation and degree of resistance present. Fly control practices should be established before infestations become too large and should be continued as a routine management …

Observations On Parasitism In Sheep In Northwestern South Dakota, B. S. Harshfield, F. N. Carlson, T. A. Dorsey May 1955

Observations On Parasitism In Sheep In Northwestern South Dakota, B. S. Harshfield, F. N. Carlson, T. A. Dorsey

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The 1944 figure was 766,600 sheep for that area, showing more than 100 percent increase in a 20-year period. Between 1944 and 1950 sheep numbers declined in these six counties to 299,000. At least three factors accounted for the decrease after 1944: (1) the difficulty in obtaining labor; (2) favorable prices for cattle which could be raised with less labor; and (3) the prevalence of losses of lambs on range from dysentery, a condition that had existed for 5 to 7 years. It was the seriousness of the lamb losses that prompted the work reported here.

Reconnaissance Soil Survey Of Potter County, W. I. Watkins, G. J. Buntley, F. C. Westin, F. E. Shubeck May 1955

Reconnaissance Soil Survey Of Potter County, W. I. Watkins, G. J. Buntley, F. C. Westin, F. E. Shubeck

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Potter County covers an area of 568,320 acres in north central South Dakota. The topography is gently sloping in the central part with a belt of hilly land along the east border and the steep, dissected bluffs of the Missouri River trench along the west border of the county. Elevations above sea level range from 1,900 to 2,000 feet on the upland to 1,600 feet on the Missouri River flood plain.
Materials from which the soils have developed include glacial deposits which occur in all parts of the county except on the Missouri River bluff where shale is exposed.
Soils …

Reproductive Performance Of Chickens As Influenced By Antibiotics In The Diet, C.W. Carlson, R.A. Wilcox, W. Kohlmeyer, D.G. Jones May 1955

Reproductive Performance Of Chickens As Influenced By Antibiotics In The Diet, C.W. Carlson, R.A. Wilcox, W. Kohlmeyer, D.G. Jones

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

Many workers have reported on the failure of antibiotic supplementation to improve the performance of hens already in high egg production. On the other hand, reports have appeared which indicated that under similar conditions the antibiotics have favorably affected the performances of laying pullets. The experiments of this study were designed to make it possible to determine effects of supplementation with antibiotics as well as to compare various feeding systems.

Effects Of Irrigation On An Adjoining Ranch Economy, W. Schutz Apr 1955

Effects Of Irrigation On An Adjoining Ranch Economy, W. Schutz

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

To determine whether irrigation development in western South Dakota is economically worthwhile, one must consider the stabilization effects it would have on the ranching economy of the area. Irrigation development is going forward. The Angostura Unit on the Cheyenne River is now partially irrigated. Additional water for the long established Belle Fourche Project has been made available from the Keyhole Dam in Wyoming. The Bureau of Reclamation has extensive plans for pump irrigation along the Missouri River and its tributaries. The Oahe Dam is under construction. Proposed irrigation of 750,000 acres from water impounded by this dam greatly overshadows all …

A Comparison Of Linseed And Soybean Oil Meal And Methods Of Feeding Growing-Fattening Pigs, T. Wright

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

These feeding trials which were reported in this bulletin, were conducted to compare further the value of soybean oil meal and linseed oil meal in rations for growing-fattening pigs and also to compare methods of feeding.

Antibiotics In Growing And Fattening Pig Rations, R. C. Wahlstrom Apr 1955

Antibiotics In Growing And Fattening Pig Rations, R. C. Wahlstrom

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

A successful hog business is dependent upon good swine feeding, breeding, and management practices. This bulletin deals with only one of these practices-feeding and with only one phase of feeding, the inclusion of antibiotics in growing and fattening pig rations.
