Supplemental L-Lysine In Milo Rations For Growing-Finishing Swine, R.W. Seerley
Supplemental L-Lysine In Milo Rations For Growing-Finishing Swine, R.W. Seerley
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1962
Nutritionists are interested in L-lysine addition to swine rations because; (1) L-lysine is an essential amino acid in the diet for best growth, (2) cereal grains and soybean meal are comparatively low in lysine, (3) proper balance of amino acids in the ration is important for good growth and feed conversion. Some experimental results suggest lysine is not a replacement for protein in the ration but should be added to rations already adequate in crude protein, (4) L-lysine can now be produced by a fermentation process which has lowered the cost.

17 Ethyl-19 Nortestosterone In Growing Finishing Swine Rations, R.W. Seerley, L.D. Kamstra
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1962
Nilevar (l7 ethyl-19-nortestosterone) has been used to promote weight gains in underweight human subjects. Recent experiments at this station also showed that this synthetic male hormone-like compound significantly increased growth of female rats, but did not increase the growth of uncastrated male rats. The objective of this experiment was to determine if any economical benefits could be realized by including the hormone in a swine ration.

Bulk Milk Hauling Costs In The Sioux Valley Milkshed, Edward R. Foss
Bulk Milk Hauling Costs In The Sioux Valley Milkshed, Edward R. Foss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bulk handling of milk is a recent development in milk transportation. It is important to know the current cost data of transporting bulk milk. Cost structure is the important supply factor in determining hauling rates. Distance and volume are two important factors, but more detailed data are required to better determine the actual costs. The objective of this study was to determine the cost per hundredweight for transporting bulk milk from farm to plant within the Sioux Valley Milk Producers Association milk shed. The attainment of this objective involved the collection, classification, and analysis of several categories of data. Thus, …
A Histological Study Of The Effects Of Relaxin On The Bovine Cervix, Carroll J. Eggee
A Histological Study Of The Effects Of Relaxin On The Bovine Cervix, Carroll J. Eggee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cervix is a thick walled tube between the vagina and the uterus which serves as a passageway for sperm to enter and for the products of birth to be expelled. Several investigators have reported that realxin causes an observable and measureable cervical dilation. Whether this hormone, which has been assayed only in the pregnant female of both humans and animals, is the one which initiates and facilitates the birth process has yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to make histological and histochemical comparisons of the effects of relaxin alone and in combination with the sensitizing …

A Comparison Of The Success Of Teaching Machines And The Programed Text To That Of The Traditional Teaching Based On A Survey Of Literature And Research Reports, Robert E. Christianson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Programmed learning, still in the embryonic stage, has brought with it new hope for some of the answers to our mass educational problems of a rapidly expanding curriculum, broadened individual differences, and an increasing pupil teacher ratio. Teaching efficiency may be brought to an optimum level by constructing teaching machines and programmed texts as developed by S. L. Pressey. This study attempted to compare the effectiveness of traditional educational practices with those using the programed text and the teaching machine. The survey of literature and the use of research findings were used as a basis for the comparison. The investigator …

The Social System Of The Dakota Indians, Vernon D. Malan
SDSU Extension Circulars
Part one of this study is an analytical description of the South Dakota Indian culture using the framework of a social systems theory. It is designed to provide Extension workers and others with a better knowledge to use as a basis for sound educational program planning, developing improved teaching methods, and evaluating results.

Influence Of Nitrate, Vitamin A And Protein Level On Feedlot Performance And Vitamin A Status Of Fattening Cattle, Burton Arthur Weichenthal
Influence Of Nitrate, Vitamin A And Protein Level On Feedlot Performance And Vitamin A Status Of Fattening Cattle, Burton Arthur Weichenthal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research project was conducted to study the effects of nitrate, added to the rations as sodium nitrate, on feedlot performance and vitamin A status of fattening cattle. Two levels of protein were used to determine if protein level influenced the effects of nitrate or the need for supplemental vitamin A. In addition, the experiment was designed to determine the value of vitamin A and protein supplement when fed with a high concentrate ration consisting of ground shelled corn and alfalfa hay. Yearling steers were fed a high grain ration composed of 80% ground shelled corn and 20% alfalfa hay …

Studies On The Protein Requirements Of Laying Hens, Virgil Allen Stangeland
Studies On The Protein Requirements Of Laying Hens, Virgil Allen Stangeland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two experiments were conducted using corn-soybean diets to study the effect of protein levels and methionine, lysine, and furazolidone supplementations on the performance of SCWL laying hens. In the first experiment hens in floor pens and in cages were fed 12, 13.4, and 16 percent protein diets with and without 25 grams of furazolidone per ton. The results of this experiment indicated that 13.4 percent protein was required for maximum egg production by hens in cages whereas 12 percent protein was adequate under floor pen management conditions. Furazolidone appeared to be most effective in increasing egg production when it was …
A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites Of Pheasants From Brown County, South Dakota, Donald E. Gilbertson
A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites Of Pheasants From Brown County, South Dakota, Donald E. Gilbertson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents a study of the helminth endoparasite of the Chinese or ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). The digestive and respiratory tracts of 262 pheasants, all of which were collected in Brown County, South Dakota, were examined. Collections were ,made from January, 1961, through November of the same year. The problem was divided as follows: (1) locating and Identifying the helminth parasites, (2) relating parasitism to the age of the birds, (3) ascertaining the seasonal distribution of the parasites, and (4) determining what gross pathological changes were due to parasitism. Previous to this study, little or no literature was available …
