Melengenstrol Acetate And Diethylstilbestrol For Feedlot Heifers, Donald C. Ridgway
Melengenstrol Acetate And Diethylstilbestrol For Feedlot Heifers, Donald C. Ridgway
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heifers comprise 30 to 40% or- the feed cattle slaughtered annually. The ratio of steers to heifers will vary depending on the numbers saved for breeding herds. Numbers needed for this purpose may vary somewhat depending on the rate or culling in cow herds and changes in the cattle population. It is apparent, however, that a large percentage of the cattle available for feedlots will be heifers. Heifers gain at a slower rate and utilize feed less efficiently than steers under similar feeding systems. Heifer carcasses have also been shown to contain more fat trim than steer carcasses when fed …
Themes Of Isolation And Relationship In Selected Novels Of Frederick Manfred, Joan Hilmoe
Themes Of Isolation And Relationship In Selected Novels Of Frederick Manfred, Joan Hilmoe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The initial appeal of the novelist Frederick Manfred for this student of American literature grew from the fact that he is a contemporary writer and that he lives in the Midwest, more precisely, in Siouxland. At first his novels seemed primarily entertaining, but interest in his work developed with an awareness of a parallel between Manfred's concepts of the isolation of man and relationship to his fellow man and modern psychological ideas. Throughout the research and study of several novels, insights have crystallized to form a clearer idea of man's search for identity and the results of that search in …
A Time-Lapse Photography Study Of Free Stall Housing For Dairy Calves, James L. Reeves
A Time-Lapse Photography Study Of Free Stall Housing For Dairy Calves, James L. Reeves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a principal means of herd replacement and expansion, the dairy calf is vital to the success of a dairy enterprise. High mortality rates among dairy calves, frequently as high as twenty percent, are very costly to the dairyman. Besides paying the high cost of losing a calf, the dairyman must find a replacement for the animal. Obtaining a herd animal from outside sources involves the risk that the replacement may be of lower quality than was the lost calf. Through careful selection of animals and a well-planned breeding program, a good farm manager will find raising his own replacement …

Trimethylselenonium Chloride Metabolism And Toxicity In The Rat, Boyd D. Obermeyer
Trimethylselenonium Chloride Metabolism And Toxicity In The Rat, Boyd D. Obermeyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historically the interest in organic derivatives of selenium has been primarily centered on selenium analogs of sulfur compounds, the selenium analogs of the sulfur-containing amino acids. Experimental studies of the metabo1ism of seleno-organic compounds have been limited to a large extent by their unavailability. Dimethyl selenide is the only organic selenium compound that has been identified as an exhalation product from a laboratory animal injected with an inorganic form of· selenium. Although the toxicity of selenium has been known for many years, the mode of action of the element has remained a mystery. Many investigations on the toxicity of selenium …

Evaluation Of The Yield And Organoleptic Quality Of Split And Whole Country Style Cured Hams, Nickolas William Norder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Any evaluation of carcass or wholesale cut characteristics is generally based upon quality and quantity of lean meat. The quantity factor is of prime importance to the breeder, producer, processor and consumer. Extensive exploration of techniques to increase the relative yield of lean meat in the carcass has been conducted by animal breeders and livestock production personnel. Furthermore, studies concerned primarily with the development of processing methods which increase yield and final product net weight have been undertaken by the meat industry. Coupled with the quantity factor is the growing concern for product quality. A product with high consumer acceptability …

The objectives of the research presented herein were to continue the previous studies and to evaluate the treatment effects of the intercepting trench. This investigation afforded sufficient time after the construction of the trench for the entire landfill area to reflect the influence of the trench. In conducting this investigation, the direction of the ground water flow was defined and various chemical analyses of the ground water were made to attain these objectives.
Dna Base Composition Of Actinomyces And Related Anaerobic Diphtheroids, Patricia A. Campbell
Dna Base Composition Of Actinomyces And Related Anaerobic Diphtheroids, Patricia A. Campbell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The taxonomy of the anaerobic bacteria known as diphtheroids is a subject of study by the Subgroup on Taxonomy of Microaerophilic Actinomycetes, an authorized Subgroup of the Subcommittee on Taxonomy of the Actinomycetales of the International Committee on Nomenclature of Bacteria, International Association of Microbiological Societies. Dr. Gordon Robertstad, a member of this committee, has stimulated a series of studies on these organisms. At present, the species differentiation coupled with genus differentiation among anaerobic diphtheroids is in a state of flux. Tests which were previously thought to be indisputable are now not entirely reliable. Fermentation reactions, catalase tests, serology, and …
Organic Degradation Of The Ground Water In The Proximity Of A Refuse Disposal Site, Wayne Evan Mohler
Organic Degradation Of The Ground Water In The Proximity Of A Refuse Disposal Site, Wayne Evan Mohler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ground water degradation resulting from refuse deposition in or near the ground water table has in recent years, become increasingly important. Although about 95 percent of the total fresh water reserves are underground sources, they presently provide only approximately 17 percent of the total amount of water used for all purposes in the country (1). There is much interest in developing ground water sources to a greater extent to supply our ever increasing demands. Not enough information is presently available to delineate accurately the effect that refuse disposal in or near the ground water has upon the quality of the …
The Ionic Requirement For Isolation Of Stable Polyribosomes From Cereal Plants And Its Relation To Sulfhydryl Protection, Merlin Dennis Breen
The Ionic Requirement For Isolation Of Stable Polyribosomes From Cereal Plants And Its Relation To Sulfhydryl Protection, Merlin Dennis Breen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Early attempts to isolate polyribosomes from barley tissue by the procedure of Lin and Key were unsuccessful. When analyzed by sucrose gradient centrifugation such preparations showed a particle distribution predominately in the monomer region of the gradient similar to data of Srivastava and Arglebe . Similar difficulties were also encountered with certain animal tissues. They were resolved by the addition of higher levels of KC1 to the extraction medium than used initially by Wettstein. The beneficial effects of monovalent ions can be explained In various ways. Petermann and Pavlovec suggested that high salt levels prevented the binding of extraneous proteins, …
A Study Of The Relationship Between Ceratocystis Ulmi And Elm Callus In Vitro, Charles R. Mcmullen
A Study Of The Relationship Between Ceratocystis Ulmi And Elm Callus In Vitro, Charles R. Mcmullen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the course of studies dealing with the Dutch elm disease, it has become apparent that there.is a need for a rapid, efficient screening method for determining disease resistance. Tissue culture is a discipline that is now well accepted in the field of plant physiology, but is a rather new technique in the field of plant pathology. The investigations of diseased tissue, until recently, has been done with the intact plant. This study has investigated the possibility of studying the growth of the fungus on host tissue cultures as a screening technique.
The Production And Behavior Of Callus Tissue From Sorghum Vulgare, Vance J. Masteller
The Production And Behavior Of Callus Tissue From Sorghum Vulgare, Vance J. Masteller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The history of plant tissue culture dates back to the early 1900’s with the research of Gottleib Haberlandt in Germany. However, it was not until 1939 that any real success was achieved. Three independent scientists, Gautberet, Nobecourt, and White simultaneously through their work set the pace for plant tissue culture. Plant tissue culture is the isolation of cell or tissues from their association with other cells and tissues in the plant to one in which nutrients are supplied artificially and the cell or tissue acts as an individual. Once the plant cells or tissues have been studied at the individual …

Some Corporations That Own Farm And Ranch Land In South Dakota, Russell L. Berry
Some Corporations That Own Farm And Ranch Land In South Dakota, Russell L. Berry
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Concern has developed about large out-of-state corporations that own agricultural land in South Dakota. Fears that such corporations may destroy family farms are often expressed. As a result legislation has been proposed which would prohibit such corporations from farming unless 51 percent of stock is owned by South Dakotans. Do present out-of-state corporations justify such fears? A survey recently made indicates that most out-of-state corporations lease their land to independent farmers. Those few that directly manage their land are not much if any different from the home-grown kind. Most appear to be held and operated by families. The survey was …

A Food Habits Study Of Whitetail Deer In The Black Hills, James Carl Schneeweis
A Food Habits Study Of Whitetail Deer In The Black Hills, James Carl Schneeweis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food habits of whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the northern Black Hills were studied during fall and winter 1966067 and 1967-68 and also during summer 1967. Summer study was confined to aspen (Populus tremuloides) areas and involved stomach analysis and a pasture study. Fall and winter food habits were determined by stomach analysis only. Associated aspen vegetation was sampled to find a representative site for construction of a 0.7 acre enclosure. Two deer were placed in a utilization section of the enclosure for 18 days during mid-summer. Annual growth was clipped in a control section of the pasture to estimate …
Indoor Versus Outdoor Calf Rearing At Three Weaning Ages, Larry J. Jorgenson
Indoor Versus Outdoor Calf Rearing At Three Weaning Ages, Larry J. Jorgenson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In order to be profitable, a dairy herb must have good heifers to meet replacement needs. According to USDA (51), these needs are substantial because 25% of the cows in an average herd must be replaced each year as they no longer return a profit. Meeting these herd replacement needs has long been a serious problem of the dairyman. Nation-wide calf loss estimates ranged between 8 and 25% with an estimated annual loss to the industry of $50 million (10). South Dakota dairymen are not immune to these mortality losses and some studies (28, 52) indicate that their losses may …
Certain Blood Parameters Effected By Acute Ammonia Toxicity In Pregnant Rabbits, James P. Apland
Certain Blood Parameters Effected By Acute Ammonia Toxicity In Pregnant Rabbits, James P. Apland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to study relevant physiological events prior to and during ammonia toxicity. Blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) was utilized to monitor progression and intensity of toxicity. Blood pH, PC02 and P02 were measured to determine effects of ammonia toxicity on acid base balance. Total serum cholesterol was also determined. Steroid hormones and cholesterol can be synthesized from active acetate, according to Oser (1965). It was hoped that any gross changes in steroid concentrations would be reflected in a total serum cholesterol change. Juhasz (1962) found that blood cholesterol increases during starvation paralleled those of blood urea-nitrogen. He …
Factors Influencing Urinary Calculi In Lambs, Donald W. Hoar
Factors Influencing Urinary Calculi In Lambs, Donald W. Hoar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two experiments were conducted to determine the interrelationships between various dietary calcium and phosphorus levels and acid-base-forming effects of the diet concerning feedlot performance and ovine phosphatic urolithiasis. Another experiment involved the interrelationships between calcium, phosphorus and potassium. All lambs used in these experiments were Texas feeder lambs of mixed breeding weighing approximately 27-30 kg. In experiment I, the treatment variables incorporated into an all concentrate, corn-soybean meal diet included 0.28 and 0.55% phosphorus, 0.14 and 0.28%-calcium and O and 2% sodium bicarbonate in a factorial design. For Experiment II, a 15% hay diet and an incomplete factorial design were …
Roughage Levels And Roughage Substitutes In High Concentrate Diets For Finishing Beef Cattle And Lambs, William M. Larson
Roughage Levels And Roughage Substitutes In High Concentrate Diets For Finishing Beef Cattle And Lambs, William M. Larson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Experiments were conducted with yearling beef cattle and feeder lambs to determine the effects of adding 3% oyster shells or various levels of hay to an all-concentrate diet of rolled corn grain adequately supplemented with protein, minerals and vitamins A and E. Criteria used for evaluating diets with varying amounts of roughage included feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, rumen fermentation, digestibility and concentrate replacement value of hay. In experiments with beef cattle, steers fed an all-concentrate diet gained 1.30 kg. daily with 6.79 kg. feed required per kg. gain. Adding 3% oyster shells to this diet resulted in only small effects …

Biological Activity Of Trimethylselenonium-Selenium And Influence Of Vitamin E On Its In Vivo Formation In Rats Using A Torula Yeast Diet, David Ding Tsair Tsay
Biological Activity Of Trimethylselenonium-Selenium And Influence Of Vitamin E On Its In Vivo Formation In Rats Using A Torula Yeast Diet, David Ding Tsair Tsay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During recent times, many efforts have been extended to investigate the metabolism of selenium compounds-in microorganisms, animals and plants. Several investigators (1-3) have proposed some hypothetical metabolic pathways for selenium. However, the role of selenium in the life function of animals remains unknown. Liver necrosis, as induced by the feeding of a Torula yeast diet which is unsupplemented with vitamin E and selenium, is known to be a fatal symptom in rats (4-6). The addition of either vitamin E or selenium to the diet is associated with the prevention of this condition. Schwarz (7) has suggested that vitamin E and …
