Ecological and trophic distributions of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota were studied. Components of the ecosystem analyzed were water, bottom sediment, zooplankton, benthic algae, crayfish, aquatic insects and fish. Concentrations of aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, methoxychlor and toxaphene were determined by gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. DDT and its metabolites, DDD and DDE, were the highest residues detected in all trophic levels examined. Heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, dieldrin and lindane were present in the majority of sample types, while neither endrin nor methoxychlor was detected above analytical confidence limits in any …

Taxonomic Composition, Biomass, And Trophic Structure Of Grassland Invertebrates At Cottonwood, South Dakota, Pauline Estelle Hamm Apr 1972

Taxonomic Composition, Biomass, And Trophic Structure Of Grassland Invertebrates At Cottonwood, South Dakota, Pauline Estelle Hamm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This particular study is concerned with invertebrates found on a grassland ecosystem; therefore, most of the literature reviewed was limited to studies involving insects. Since the literature on ecosystems is extensive, only the following trends as listed by Clark et al. were reviewed: physical factor ecology, production ecology, and population ecology. Smith was among the first to emphasize physical factor ecology which stressed the importance of abiotic factors in regulating animal numbers. He first used the terms density-dependent and density independent. Production ecology introduced the study of more complex life communities and considered the trophic association or food-cycles and the …

Effects Of Erythropoietin On Intestinal Iron Absorption In Rabbits, Thomas John Hajek Apr 1972

Effects Of Erythropoietin On Intestinal Iron Absorption In Rabbits, Thomas John Hajek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Erythropoietin ls a mammalian hormone synthesized primarily by renal tissues ln response to tissue hypoxia. the hormone accelerates erythropoiesis, the process of red blood cell (erythrocyte) production, Increasing oxygen transport to tissue cells. Accelerated erythropoiesis implies an increased rate of hemoglobin synthesis and, therefore, an increased demand for iron, which ls an integral part of the hemoglobin molecule. Iron, to meet this requirement, may be obtained by mobilizing storage iron or by enhancing dietary iron absorption. That erythropoiesis promotes increased absorption of dietary iron has been delineated. However, the actual mechanism involved has not been elucidated completely. It has been …

Mechanism And Regulation Of Nitrogen Assimilation In Klebsiella Pneuminiae M5al, Ming- Liang Li Apr 1972

Mechanism And Regulation Of Nitrogen Assimilation In Klebsiella Pneuminiae M5al, Ming- Liang Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pathway of the nitrogen atom after the initial nitrogen fixation reaction has taken place is not known. This study is an attempt to learn something about the enzymes that are involved in amino acid synthesis. The cell has varying demands for the intermediary metabolites of nitrogen, as the processes of protein and other polymer synthesis vary. In addition, the cell is often confronted with changing supplies of nitrogen and energy, as a function of environmental change. Efficient growth depends upon the optimum utilization of metabolites in response to variation in cellular needs. The bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae not only has …

Wildlife Management: A Landowner's Guide, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University Apr 1972

Wildlife Management: A Landowner's Guide, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

Man has a great effect upon wildlife. Many of man's activities have produced vast changes on the landscape and significantly altered wildlife's habitat. For example, before the Missouri River was dammed, large numbers of deer inhabited the forested river bottoms. After these bottoms were flooded the population of deer was greatly reduced. However, several species of fish have flourished because of the reservoirs created. Another example is the prairie chicken. It requires large tracts of prairie land and could not survive in areas where the prairie was plowed and converted to cropland. Since wildlife is a product of the land …

Untrastructural Morphology Of Bovine Herpesvirus Infected Cells, Carol Ann Larson Mar 1972

Untrastructural Morphology Of Bovine Herpesvirus Infected Cells, Carol Ann Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus has been shown to cause considerable economic losses in the South Dakota cattle industry. On the average, one in ten cattle abortions are caused by this virus. This amounts to approximately $250,000 lost each year by South Dakota cattlemen. There is no way of determining the economic loss due to the respiratory infections also caused by this virus. As is the case with most virus diseases, control requires extensive knowledge of its biological, physical and chemical properties. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of IBR virus on the ultrastructure of a bovine …

A Comparative Economic Analysis Of Representative Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In The Eastern Missouri Alope Area Of South Dakota, Ronald C. Graham Mar 1972

A Comparative Economic Analysis Of Representative Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In The Eastern Missouri Alope Area Of South Dakota, Ronald C. Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sizable annual variation in agricultural production and income has long been an obstacle to long-range, agriculturally orientated economic planning and development in the Northern Great Plains states. Paramount as a cause of this obstacle is the inconsistency of crop yields primarily due to annual fluctuations, sometimes severe, in the quantity and seasonal distribution of rainfall. Irrigation is the logical solution for stabilizing agricultural production and income. The development of sprinkler irrigation has the advantages of little or no requirement for land-shaping and of allowing rather exact application of uniform quantities of water. As such it has been considered for some …

It also attempts to determine what attitudes Brookings elementary teachers have about instructional television. Instructional television (ITV) is a modern-day teaching tool available and used in most schools. The cost to the individual school district is minimal after receiving sets have been purchased. Supplementary materials go with the programs and are available to the school from the public television station. A school may purchase any or none of the material it chooses. The advantages of instructional television are many, as will be …

Determination Of Salmonella Species In The Big Sioux River And Development Of A Quantitative Most Probable Number Method, Myung Hyun Kim Mar 1972

Determination Of Salmonella Species In The Big Sioux River And Development Of A Quantitative Most Probable Number Method, Myung Hyun Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the pollution problems in rivers and lakes have forced the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration to issue requirements for minimum water standards for each State with an interstate stream. Since the Big Sioux River is an interstate river, studies are needed to determine its quality. According to the South Dakota Committee on Water Pollution, water pollution in South Dakota originates from agricultural, municipal, and industrial wastes. For the Big Sioux River, the municipal and meat-processing wastes are the important sources of pollution. Little is known of the sanitary bacteriological quality of rivers and lakes in South Dakota. …

An Expression Of Hybrid Vigor And A Characterization Of Callus Tissue Of Zea Mays L., Judy Winkler Johnson Mar 1972

An Expression Of Hybrid Vigor And A Characterization Of Callus Tissue Of Zea Mays L., Judy Winkler Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is theoretically possible to culture any tissue from any plant or animal, but little work has been done on the major grain crops, especially Zea mays, because they are monocotyledons and present special problems in tissue culturing because of their slow growth. This thesis reports an attempt to grow and redifferentiate callus tissue of corn. The objectives of the research were: (1) to test the ability of different inbred and hybrid corn varieties to form callus and (2) to characterize the callus cell ultrastructure. Since so much is known about corn on the genetic level, it is appropriate to …

A Study Of Groundwater Degradation Resulting From Wastewater Treatment By Lagooning, Douglas Carl Jensen Mar 1972

A Study Of Groundwater Degradation Resulting From Wastewater Treatment By Lagooning, Douglas Carl Jensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the past quarter century, the utilization of lagoons as a means of waste treatment has increased dramatically. Communities which utilize this means of waste treatment tend to consider the sewage lagoon as providing complete or final treatment. Consideration was not given to problems caused by the treated waste after it was removed from the immediate environment. In the past few years there has been an increasing demand that the environment be protected, and the methods of waste disposal have come under scrutiny. It has been found that the elements causing eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs exist in substantial amounts …

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette Mar 1972

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urea was introduced as an economical nonprotein nitrogen source for ruminant animals. In the gastrointestinal tract, urea is hydrolyzed in the presence of bacterial urease to ammonia and carbon dioxide. The liberated ammonia is utilized by rumen microorganisms for amino acid synthesis. Ammonia not used by microorganisms diffuses through the gastrointestinal lining and is transported to the liver by blood, where enzymes synthesize urea by combining two moles of ammonia and one mole of carbon dioxide. The nontoxic urea is excreted by the kidney or secreted with saliva and other digestive fluids for recycling. Ammonia intoxication occurs when more ammonia …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three organophosphate insecticides, viz. Ravap® (a 1:4 mixture of dichlorvos and Gardona® (2-chloro-1-(2,4,5-trichlorophenyl) vinyl dimethyl phosphate, Rabon® (2-chloro-1-(2,4,5-trichlorophenyl) vinyl dimethyl phosphate), and 95.0% malathion, were applied aerially at ULV rates for control of face flies, Musca autumnalis De Geer, and horn flies, Haematobia irrit.ns (L.), during the summers of 1971 and 1972. From pre- and post- spray counts of adult flies on cows it was determined that Ravap reduced horn flies and face flies 69.6% and 26.1% respectively, one day after application. One week after application, however, horn flies had increased 217.4% over prespray counts, and face flies had increased …

Sulfur And Methionine Supplementation With Urea For Feedlot Cattle, Bryan E. Davidson Mar 1972

Sulfur And Methionine Supplementation With Urea For Feedlot Cattle, Bryan E. Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein is often a limiting nutrient in animal diets. As ruminant animals have the ability to convert large quantities of nonprotein nitrogen to protein, the cost of protein supplementation can be greatly reduced by substituting cheaper nonprotein nitrogen compounds in protein supplements for certain amounts of preformed protein. This process is mediated through rumen microorganisms and, to date, urea has been the most widely used nonprotein nitrogen compound in ruminant diets. Efficiency of urea utilization may be affected by several factors. Among these are level and source of energy, level and source of protein and percent urea in the total …

Manganese-Iron Relationships Influencing Certain Blood Parameters And Organogenesis In Pregnant And Fetal Rabbits, Gerald R. Cizadlo Mar 1972

Manganese-Iron Relationships Influencing Certain Blood Parameters And Organogenesis In Pregnant And Fetal Rabbits, Gerald R. Cizadlo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of studying manganese involves its essentiality as a nutrient and its antagonism and interrelations with other essential dietary components. Manganese was first shown to be essentia1 for plant growth by McHargue. Weinberg found that bacteria require manganese for growth, for culture longevity, and to synthesize antibiotics, bacteriophage, protective antigens, several enzymes and endospores. No other metal would satisfy this requirement. Underwood stated that manganese was essential to poultry to prevent perosis and nutritional chondrodystrophy. It was necessary in mammals for normal growth and reproductive function. Specific biochemical roles for manganese have been found. Pyruvate carboxylase activity has been …

Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker Feb 1972

Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil nutrients need to be replenished from year to year. Nitrogen is a primary structural block in· proteins, chlorophyll, and many other compounds of plant and animal matter. One method of nutrient replenishment is to apply commercial fertilizer. This is especially important for pastures and grassland since very little organic matter is annually returned and mixed into the soil by cultural practices. Anhydrous ammonia, NH3, is one of the common nitrogen carrier fertilizers. Nitrogen fertilizers include anhydrous ammonia, which is handled as a liquid under pressure, liquid solutions, and nitrogen compounds in a granular state. Anhydrous ammonia injected beneath the …

Vegetable Gardening, Paul Prashar, Dean Martin

SDSU Extension Circulars

Many South Dakota families have saved as much as $250 to $400 on on the family food bill by raising a good garden planned to meet their needs. Gardening provides a useful, profitable form of recreation for the entire family. In addition fresh vegetables are readily available and supply important amounts of certain essential vitamins and minerals. Vegetables picked and used fresh from the garden are superior to those that have lost quality through delay in getting from the grower to the consumer or from being picked before they are ripe. Preservation and storage make it possible to have some …
