Dietary Protein, Fat And Copper Levels And Its Effect On Fat Composition Of Turkeys, R. A. Nelson, E. Guenther, C. W. Carlson Sep 1972

Dietary Protein, Fat And Copper Levels And Its Effect On Fat Composition Of Turkeys, R. A. Nelson, E. Guenther, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1972

Reports suggesting a relationship between diet and blood cholesterol levels have caused people to become more concerned about the type of fat in their diets. However, there is little conclusive evidence that high blood cholesterol is indeed a major cause of heart attacks in this country. Previous work at this station has indicated that the diet has a great effect on the type of body fat in birds and that what already is highly unsaturated can be readily made still further unsaturated.

The Effect Of Eggs And Other Fat Sources On Cholesterol And Fatty Acid Parameters In Growing Rats, R. A. Nelson, D. E. Wachholz, C. W. Carlson Sep 1972

The Effect Of Eggs And Other Fat Sources On Cholesterol And Fatty Acid Parameters In Growing Rats, R. A. Nelson, D. E. Wachholz, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1972

The increase in heart attacks in the past two decades has caused many physicians and research workers to examine the diet of the average American. Frequently blamed are the high levels of cholesterol in the diet, which some researchers say increase blood cholesterol and therefore arteriole placque formation. Two studies have been conducted with rats to test several fat sources for their effects on cholesterol parameters.

Yolk Pigmenters, E. Guenthner, C. W. Carlson, O. E. Olson Sep 1972

Yolk Pigmenters, E. Guenthner, C. W. Carlson, O. E. Olson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1972

Commercial quantities of deeply pigmented egg yolk are used by certain food manufacturers to give desirable yellow color to some of their products. Yellow com and alfalfa meal are the major natural sources of the yellow pigments (xanthophylls) found in the egg yolk. The degree of pigmentation depends largely on two factors, the pigment concentration in the diet and the amount of pigment absorbed by the yolk fat during yolk formation.

Dipping Turkey Eggs Prior To Incubation, C. E. Holmquist, T. E. Lucas, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1972

Many commercial turkey hatcheries have been dipping eggs in antibiotic solutions prior to incubation in an attempt to control various respiratory infections in young poults. A study was completed this past year with eggs from a breeder flock of a known history of Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection. Eggs were incubated in separate incubators with and without dipping in a solution of 3,000 ppm tylosin tartrate, 2,500 ppm kanamycin sulfate and 1,000 ppm zephiran chloride. Poults of each group were fed to market age on two dietary energy series, one essentially containing an additional 165 Gal of M.E./kg from animal fat additions, …

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1972

Many workers have reported that cultures of molds grown on feedstuffs produce poisonous metabolites, "mycotoxins", which depress growth of farm animals and may cause high mortality.

Protein-Energy And Least Cost Laying Diets, E. Guenthner, D. Arshem, C. W. Carlson Sep 1972

Protein-Energy And Least Cost Laying Diets, E. Guenthner, D. Arshem, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1972

A proper balance between the quality of protein and the amount of energy in a diet is necessary to achieve optimum use of the feed. This relationship, the C/P ratio, applied to practical feed formulation has tended to promote the use of high efficiency, high density diets. Two studies involving protein-energy relationships and least cost programming indicate that the best feed conversion does not necessarily result in the most economical production.

Grassland Production Systems Compared With Grain Production: North Central South Dakota, H. R. Allen Jul 1972

Grassland Production Systems Compared With Grain Production: North Central South Dakota, H. R. Allen

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The profitability of seeding cropland to grass has been a problem for farmers and ranchers in North Central South Dakota for several years. Many factors may influence a decision to divert cropland to grazing land for the production of beef. An additional problem arises in reaching a decision concerning pasture grasses to produce and/or a grazing system to establish.
It is the purpose of this publication to present a method and a procedure to use in making an economic analysis of alternative grassland systems for beef production. The returns obtained from grassland may then be compared with returns from grain …

Comparative Study Of Constant Voltage And Constant Current Electroanesthesia, Anand Vithal Tulpule

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the field of anesthesia, drugs are used extensively, however; electro anesthesia or the use of electric current to achieve anesthesia is also being studied because of its excellent recovery characteristics. This thesis is a comparative study of different techniques of achieving electro anesthesia. Pharmacologically, general anesthesia is a completely irreversible converging depression of certain central nervous system functions wherein respiration, circulation and the vital life support mechanisms are not seriously impaired. Clinically, general anesthesia is a production of unconsciousness, some degree of areflexia, muscular relaxation and varying degrees of respiratory depression in an orderly progression. Electro anesthesia can be …

A Structural Analysis Of The Beef Slaughtering Industry In South Dakota, Haven L. Stuck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The income received from the production of beef, South Dakota's most important product, could be greatly expanded by an increase in cattle slaughter. The main objective of this study is to analyze the beef packing industry in the state. in an attempt to determine the optimum number, location and size of specialized beef slaughter plants in South Dakota. Recent structural changes in the meat packing industry should be beneficial to the meat packing industry in South Dakota. It is hoped that this study will provide useful information to industry personnel for making investment decisions. This information could also be used …

The Effects Of Protein Level And Age On Performance, Carcass Characteristics And Nutrient Digestibility Of Growing-Finishing Swine, Tim S. Stahly May 1972

The Effects Of Protein Level And Age On Performance, Carcass Characteristics And Nutrient Digestibility Of Growing-Finishing Swine, Tim S. Stahly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present trends toward the meat type hog and the consumer's demand for lean cuts have resulted in the investigation of methods to produce leaner pigs. During recent years there has been considerable interest in the effect of dietary protein levels on growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics of swine. Several reports have indicated that increased dietary protein levels may improve growth performance and/or carcass leanness without adversely affecting the quality of the pork produced. However, little research has been conducted to show if this decrease in carcass quality of pigs fed a low protein diet could be at …

Detection And Assay Of Viruses Using Latex Particles, Thomas Charles Sorensen May 1972

Detection And Assay Of Viruses Using Latex Particles, Thomas Charles Sorensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When hemagglutination is caused by the virus particle itself, a particle joins two red blood cells together by forming a bridge between them. If sufficient hemagglutination particles are present, the red cells form clusters of larger aggregates which fall to the bottom of the test tube or well. It is this sort of biophysical phenomenon which is being investigated in this study. Rather than using red blood cells as the adsorbent, to the surface of which the virus adsorbs, some solid adsorbents have been utilized to substitute for the red cells in a variety of experimental manipulations. Bentonite has been …

Effects Of Des Withdrawal On Feedlot Performance Of Cattle, L. B. Embry, B. E. Davidson, D. G. Fox May 1972

Effects Of Des Withdrawal On Feedlot Performance Of Cattle, L. B. Embry, B. E. Davidson, D. G. Fox

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Federal regulations stipulating an increase from 2 to 7 in the number of days during which cattle are not to be fed diethylstilbestrol (DES) prior to slaughter may require changes in procedures followed for marketing finished cattle.
This has raised several questions concerning withdrawal of DES from cattle diets:
What happens to feedlot performance when DES is removed from the diet?
What would be the effects on performance if the withdrawal period was extended much beyond the required 7 days?
What are the advantages of feeding a supplement without DES in comparison to no supplement during the withdrawal period?
To …

Influence Of Estrus Synchronization With Mga On Subsequent Ovum Transport And Fertility In Beef Cows, John D. Reed Apr 1972

Influence Of Estrus Synchronization With Mga On Subsequent Ovum Transport And Fertility In Beef Cows, John D. Reed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Artificial insemination (A.I.) has been commercially available to beef producers for nearly 20 years. However, most beef cattlemen do not use A.I. because of the labor and management required during the long breeding season. Successful estrus synchronization would allow optimum use of labor and facilities thus allowing maximum use of A.I. It would also enable the producer to more closely control calving dates. Thereby assuring a more uniform group of offspring at market time. More effective use of A.I. would also enhance the use of outstanding performance tested sires and aid in control of certain reproductive diseases. Control of the …

Heat And Moisture Production In A Closed Environment Beef Building During Warm Weather, Martin L. Hellickson Apr 1972

Heat And Moisture Production In A Closed Environment Beef Building During Warm Weather, Martin L. Hellickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need for improved production facilities is emphasized by the fact that beef consumption is at record levels in the United States with continued growth predicted. The annual per capita consumption of beef and veal in the United States was nearly 73 pounds in 1949 and increased 56 per cent to approximately 114 pounds per person by 1969. The demand for beef is also increasing in developed areas throughout the rest of the world. Increases in demands for beef have stimulated the beef industry to make significant gains in production. The production of beef in the United States has increased …

Production Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B In Foods With Varied Environmental Conditions, Robert Jefferey Heidelbauer Apr 1972

Production Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B In Foods With Varied Environmental Conditions, Robert Jefferey Heidelbauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number one cause of food poisoning is enterotoxin produced by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Knowledge of the conditions which inhibit enterotoxin production in foods is of great economic importance. Previous research on staphylococcal food poisoning has been concerned with the presence and growth of Staphylococcus aureus in foods. Until recently, little work has been done with detection of the toxin in foods, even though proof of responsibility for the poisoning depends on direct demonstration of enterotoxin in the food. Before research on enterotoxin production could be feasible a rapid method of detection was needed. Early detection techniques involved …

Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson Apr 1972

Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the first enterovirus isolates in 1957 and rhinovirus isolation in 1962, more than 600 isolations of bovine picornaviruses have been reported. Previous workers have been concerned primarily with serological comparisons among their own isolates. Only two viruses, LCR4 and BEV I, are available to investigators for serologic comparison. Picornaviruses have been isolated from animals with. respiratory diseases, diarrhea, and histories of abortions. Interest has not been that great because of the vast number of strains isolated, and at present, the studied strains have no disease attributed to them. Little has been done with these strains of virus except to …
