Key To Microscopic Fragments Of Plant Tissue In Prairie Dog Stomachs And Food Habits Of Prairie Dogs In South Dakota, Carol A. Summers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to (1) develop a reference collection and construct a key of plants occurring on prairie dog towns in southwest South Dakota; (2) determine plant species eaten by prairie dogs by analyzing stomach and pellet samples; and (3) relate the availability of plant species and preference in the feeding habits of prairie dogs. Two prairie dog towns of different vegetation were studied. Four burrows in each of two vegetative types for each town were randomly selected. Prairie dogs and pellet samples were collected from these burrows; plant cover was measured in four concentric circles for …

Effects Of P.L. 566 Stream Channelization On Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ronald E. Erickson Jan 1976

Effects Of P.L. 566 Stream Channelization On Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ronald E. Erickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Wild Rice Creek Watershed project, in North and South Dakota was constructed under authority of the Small Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act (P.L. 83-566 as amended). Structural measures included 24.7 miles of channelization and four floodwater retarding dams. To measure the degree that channelization influenced drainage of prairie wetlands, drainage rates in a channelized tributary were compared to rates in an unchannelized tributary of Wild Rice Creek. Channelization had a direct impact on wetlands by channel drainage reduction of overbank flows, and by providing drainage outlets. Indirect (secondary) wetland losses are believed to have occurred outside of the …

Population Status Of Beaver On The Free-Running Missouri River In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert J. Vanden Berge Jan 1976

Population Status Of Beaver On The Free-Running Missouri River In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert J. Vanden Berge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One hundred sixty two beaver (Castor canadensis) harvested by trappers from the free-running Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota were examined from fall 1974 to spring 1976. Ninety two were males and 70 were females (131:100 sex ratio). Age specific sex ratios were not significantly different (P >0.05) from a 1:1 ratio for all age classes. The age structure of the sample was 69:26:45:15:4:3 for age classes zero through five, respectively. Minimum breeding age for female beaver was 2.5 years. Seventy-eight percent of all females (>2.5 years old) collected after the breeding season contained corpora lutea and viable fetuses. …

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee Jan 1976

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The composition of cow's milk, including both the fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) content, is known to vary over rather broad ranges. Breed and individuality of the cow are the major factors influencing this, but many other factors are known to exert their influence. However, it has generally been observed that compensation or complementing occurs when the milk of cows is mixed together; so that the composition of milk from a herd will tend toward averages or norms. This effect usually is even more marked as the milk from two or more herds is commingled. Payment for milk on the basis …

Detection Of Antibiotic Residues In Bovine Milk, Mark Edward Johnson Jan 1976

Detection Of Antibiotic Residues In Bovine Milk, Mark Edward Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act antibiotics are considered as ·adulterants in milk and milk products. Cultured dairy products cannot be made with milk containing small concentrations -of antibiotics. Also, minute quantities of antibiotics cause allergic reactions in some people. Penicillin is the most common antibiotic to which people are allergic, and penicillin is also the most commonly used antibiotic in the treatment of infections in bovines. Antibiotics, whether injected intravenously or intramuscularly, or infused into the udder of the cow, can be secreted into the milk. It is for this reason that withdrawal times for milk from cows …

Haemophilus somnus was the tentative name given in 1969 to a fastidious gram negative pleomorphic coccobacillus which was consistently isolated from cattle affected with a clinical syndrome called thrombo embolic meningoencephalitis (TEME)(1). The organism was initially classidied as an Actinobacillus actinoides- like organism, but because of its demand for a blood base for primary isolationit was reclassified as Haemophilus-like. Bailie then designated the species name somnus, referring to the sleepiness commonly exhibited by TEME affected cattle(1). In this study, the biochemical reactions of 50 H. somnus isolants recovered from bovine specimens submitter to the South Dakota …

The Composition And Dynamics Of The Soil Algal Flora In A Western South Dakota Grassland, Judith Ann Freeman Jan 1976

The Composition And Dynamics Of The Soil Algal Flora In A Western South Dakota Grassland, Judith Ann Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forest, Miller and Raizen (1963) and Hutcheson and Olson (1967) have conducted two of the only investigations on soil algae in a prairie ecosystem. The present investigation dealt first with identification of genera of algae present in the soil and an evaluation of their numbers. Secondarily a relationship was established between the numbers of algae in the soil (by species) and their environment, by the correlation coefficients. The variation in the environment was then used to predict the occurrence of algae in the soil using stepwise additive multiple regression analysis. Finally several environmental factors were evaluated under controlled conditions to …

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington Jan 1976

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For more than thirty years, Mary McCarthy has served as the conscience of the liberal American intellectual. McCarthy’s method of writing is satire, and she treats both her sympathetic and unsympathetic characters satirically. The characters in her fiction are generally liberal intellectuals who follow one of two patterns. The sympathetic characters are those who, despite their flaws, endeavor to be conscientious, objective and truth seeking. They are plagued by self-doubt and constant awareness o their own limitations. In contrast, her unsympathetic characters are egotistical and self-deluding. Their intellectual capabilities are bent not toward fulfillment of their liberal and humanitarian ideals, …

History And Acculturation Of The Dakota Indians, J. L. Satterlee, V. D. Malan Dec 1975

History And Acculturation Of The Dakota Indians, J. L. Satterlee, V. D. Malan

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

In order to fully understand and appreciate those events which led to the final submission of the American Indian to the majority white culture, it is necessary to look to the historical antecedents predating white Indian contact. The original ways of living of the American Indian are not easily understood by the modern man who believes the material progress of his generation to be the highest advancement of civilization. In all societies there is a strong tendency for the majority group to assume that its values, attitudes, and behavior are superior in all regards to the habit patterns and customs …

Alternative Evaluation Procedures For South Dakota Use-Value Assessment Of Agricultural Lands, G. Morse Dec 1975

Alternative Evaluation Procedures For South Dakota Use-Value Assessment Of Agricultural Lands, G. Morse

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Property taxes for agricultural lands continue to be a source of concern to both agricultural producers who must pay them and local units of government which depend upon this revenue. Recently attention has focused on the assessment criteria for agricultural lands. Should the assessment of agricultural lands be based on market values or productivity? If productivity is used, what estimation procedure should be used?
This research bulletin puts these public affairs questions in a decision making framework. The purpose is to educate rather than to advocate a particular solution.

Amino Acis Supplementation Of Opaque-2 Corn For Finishing Swine, Richard W. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal, John Volz Nov 1975

Amino Acis Supplementation Of Opaque-2 Corn For Finishing Swine, Richard W. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal, John Volz

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1975

Several experiments have shown that opaque-2 corn is superior to normal yellow corn for pigs because of its higher content of the amino acids lysine and tryptophan. Previous research at this station has shown that finishing pigs fed opaque-2 corn supplemented with lysine or lysine and tryptophan do not grow as rapidly or efficiently as pigs fed corn and soybean meal. Since we have shown that opaque-2 corn is also deficient in threonine for the young pig, this experiment was conducted to study the effect of adding supplemental lysine and threonine to a diet of opaque-2 corn, minerals and vitamins.

High Protein Grains In Starter Rations, Steven L. Robbins, George W. Libal, Richard W. Wahlstrom Nov 1975

High Protein Grains In Starter Rations, Steven L. Robbins, George W. Libal, Richard W. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1975

High protein grains have been shown to have greater value than normal protein grains when fed to growing and finishing swine. However, limited research has been conducted using these grains in young pig starter diets. Because cereal grains primarily supply energy in the swine diet, starter diets need to be supplemented with large amounts of protein supplement in order to meet the pig's nutrient requirements. High protein grains have the ability to provide energy and a major portion of protein in the diet. Three separate experiments were conducted to determine the value of high protein grains in pig starter diets …
