Cow-Munity Water Systems As Compared To Rural Community Water Systems, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University Feb 1976

Cow-Munity Water Systems As Compared To Rural Community Water Systems, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

Adequate supplies of good quality water available at water distribution points on the western range is essential for efficient livestock production. This is equally true in pastures of eastern South Dakota. These eastern pastures, however, are small and carrying capacity per acre is high as compared to western range land. Therefore the problem of distribution is less. As a general rule, water supplies can also be developed more cheaply in eastern South Dakota. Low population densities in the west further aggravate the problem when we consider feasibility criteria presently used in evaluating proposed systems.

Analysis Of Aerial Surveys And Tolerance Of Landowners For A Canada Goose Flock In Northeastern South Dakota, Thomas C. Tacha Jan 1976

Analysis Of Aerial Surveys And Tolerance Of Landowners For A Canada Goose Flock In Northeastern South Dakota, Thomas C. Tacha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Four hundred rural landowners were interviewed in Day and Marshall counties in South Dakota in 1974 and 1975. These 400 interviews included 200 interviews with landowners living within 6.4 km of the three major summer-fall goose concentration areas and 200 interviews from a random sample of landowners living in the study area. Eighty-six percent of the interviewed landowners indicated that it was a good idea to expand the northeastern South Dakota Canada goose flock from 2,000 to 5,000 birds. Only 6 percent of the landowners had complaints about the geese, despite the fact that 23.5 percent of them had received …

Free Fatty Acids Associated With Induced Rancidity In Cream And Butter, John Alan Anderson Jan 1976

Free Fatty Acids Associated With Induced Rancidity In Cream And Butter, John Alan Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most significant problems in the dairy industry today is the flavor defect known as rancidity. This defect has been recognized for some time, but recent trends in milk handling have increased the problem of rancidity. Recently the dairy industry on the farm has changed to the increased use of pipeline milkers and bulk handling of milk. Processing plants are becoming larger and more centralized, resulting in more movement over longer distances for the raw product. These changes result in increased foaming and agitation of the milk, contributing to the rancidity problem. The butter industry has changed. Butter …

Bovine Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma : In Vitro Investigations Of A Viral Etiology, Mary A. Anson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma, commonly known as cancer eye, is a common and economically important problem to the U.S. cattle industry. This neoplasm is particularly significant in aged breeding stock. The tumor usually originates from the squamous epithelial cells of the corneal-scleral junction and the nicitating membrane of the eye. Eye cancer lesions progress from small pin point plaques to large tumors involving the eye and surrounding tissue. This disease causes parital or total loss of vision in the affected eye and the cancer may metastasize. The objectives of this research were to: investigate the properties of tumor cell …

Computer Simulation Of Livestock Housing Design, Leslie Lloyd Christianson Jan 1976

Computer Simulation Of Livestock Housing Design, Leslie Lloyd Christianson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer simulation requires theoretical and empirical mathematical relationships describing different aspects of heat and moisture transfer for livestock confinement buildings. Relationships with various degrees of sophistication exists that adequately describe these heat and moisture transfers. Using these relationships with climatic data, environmental requirements, construction characteristics, material properties and economic data, a computer technique can be developed to mathematically model energy requirements for operating confinement livestock environments. This technique should base ventilation rates on moisture removal, temperature control and animal comfort criteria to minimize unnecessary energy consumption. However, no such computer model currently exists that determines and employs optimal ventilation rates …

A study of giant Canada geese (Branta Canadensis maxima) nesting on stock ponds in western South Dakota was conducted during 1974 and 1975. Analysis of 10 selected variables at nests on natural sites indicated that distance of water below high water level and percent slope from wetland to horizon, contributed the most to the use of the site. Distance from wetland to horizon and disturbance factors were two important variable measured to determine use of artificial nesting structures. First nests were initiated on 1 April 1974 and 8 April 1975. Twenty-five nests (16 percent) were located on artificial nesting structures, …

Electrical Safety In The Hospital, William Ray Engle Jan 1976

Electrical Safety In The Hospital, William Ray Engle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrical safety has become n important part of hospital management. The potential danger to patients and staff has increased, as health care becomes more sophisticated. Due to the unique situation that exists in hospitals, most hospital personnel do not understand the problems that occur. The problem is greater in smaller hospitals that do not have the time, money or qualified personnel to deal with the problem. Hospital electrical safety is not a complex problem. A basic safety program can be initiated if the personnel have a basic understanding of electricity and its effects on the body. Many nurses in the …

Physiological Responses And Thermal Comfort Of Subjects In A Tractor Cab, Kenton Richard Kaufman Jan 1976

Physiological Responses And Thermal Comfort Of Subjects In A Tractor Cab, Kenton Richard Kaufman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

P.O. Fanger of Denmark was the first scientist to generalize the physiological basis for predicting human thermal comfort based on activity level, clothing type, air temperature, air velocity, mean radiant temperature, and air humidity. Thus any activity level and clothing type, it is possible to determine combinations of air temperature, mean radiant temperature, air humidity and relative air velocity which would produce optimum thermal comfort. The Fanger approach has been applied successfully to offices and buildings. It would be quite useful to demonstrate that Fanger’s concepts could be applied to tractor cabs. The objectives of this study were as follows: …

Investigation On Several Aspects Of The Epidemiology And Control Of Wheat Scab, Dale E. Miller Jan 1976

Investigation On Several Aspects Of The Epidemiology And Control Of Wheat Scab, Dale E. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The distribution of wheat scap is worldwide; in the U.S. the disease is the most prevalent in the central and eastern regions. The fungus attacks both spring and winter wheat, as well as many other Gramineous plants, including barley, oats, rice and some wild grasses. Among dicotyledon plants, the fungus causes root and crown disease of pea and carnation. With more wheat acreage each year, a build-up of the pathogen population is likely, and therefore pose a greater problem in the future. Today’s use of cultural practices that leave large amounts of surface residue in the fields may provide the …

Dormancy In The Seed Of Western Wheatgrass (Agropyron Smithii, Rydb.), Quentin E. Schultz Jan 1976

Dormancy In The Seed Of Western Wheatgrass (Agropyron Smithii, Rydb.), Quentin E. Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As is the case with many of the native grass species, western wheatgrass can at times possess a high amount of seed dormancy. This dormancy makes the determination of pure live seed difficult. Consequently, laboratory methods have been sought to completely break this dormancy in order to obtain a true determination of seed viability. Such methods as embryo excision, lemma and plea removal, caryopsis clipping, alternating temperatures, and others have been used with varying success. The method now employed by the South Dakota State Seed Laboratory to determine the viability of ungerminated grass seeds is the tetrazolium test. After the …
