Studies On The Gas Given Off By Yeast When It Goes From An Anaerobic To Aerobic Metabolism, David C. Potts Jan 1978

Studies On The Gas Given Off By Yeast When It Goes From An Anaerobic To Aerobic Metabolism, David C. Potts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several investigators have observed that when yeast cells (yeast) go from a strictly anaerobic environment to an aerobic oner and glucose is added a negative value is recorded on the manometer. This phenomenon indicates that a gas has been given off by the yeast. The purpose of this research was to identify the gas and determine how it arises.

Molybdenum(V) Solutions In Hydrobromic Acid, Edwin Charles Perley Jan 1978

Molybdenum(V) Solutions In Hydrobromic Acid, Edwin Charles Perley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the coordination chemistry of molybdenum has increased greatly in recent years because of the discovery that molybdenum plays an active role in several redox enzymes. Model systems have been devised to gain insight into the function of molybdenum in these enzymes. Most model systems are believed to contain an oxomolybdate(V) dimer in equilibrium with a redox active monomer or dimer. A relatively simple system that shows important similarities to model systems is a molybdenum(V) solution in hydrobromic or hydrochloric acid. As in the model systems, these solutions are believed to contain monomers and dimers in equilibrium. The equilibria …

Individual And Maternal Heterosis In Angus And Charolais Reciprocal Cross Cows And Three Breed Cross Calves Under Two Management Systems, M. A. Brown, C. A. Dinkel Jan 1978

Individual And Maternal Heterosis In Angus And Charolais Reciprocal Cross Cows And Three Breed Cross Calves Under Two Management Systems, M. A. Brown, C. A. Dinkel

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1978

Crossbreeding is being utilized as a management tool to increase the efficiency of beef production. Among the benefits of crossbreeding is the expression of both individual and maternal heterosis or hybrid vigor. Magnitudes of heterosis should be estimated so that it can be most efficiently utili zed in the traits where heterosis is expressed. The potential for the level of heterosis to depend on management should also be evaluated. The purpose of this research was to compare individual and maternal heterosis in cows raised in drylot with cows raised in pasture management.

Fatty Liver-Hemorrhagic Syndrome (Flhs) In Caged Laying Hens, Richard A. Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A series of eleven experiments was conducted with caged laying hens to study the effects of diet and strain on production and fat accumulation in the liver. In Experiments 1 to 4, a normal ad libitum feeding regime was used, while in Experiments 5 to 11, a force-feeding technique was used as a procedure to increase the incidence of FLHS. Four commercial hybrid strains and a straightbred SCWL (Regional Control) strain were utilized in this study. Choline supplementation at 1500 mg/kg of diet increased egg production from 1 to 11% while decreasing total liver lipid as much as 50%. Supplementation …

C.S. Lewis's Interplanetary Trilogy: "An Imaginative Realization Of Doctrine", Marcia K. Houtman Jan 1978

C.S. Lewis's Interplanetary Trilogy: "An Imaginative Realization Of Doctrine", Marcia K. Houtman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength are, in a sense, escape fiction; but they are also much more than that. Lewis's Christianity is something that cannot be separated from his fiction; although he perhaps did not begin writing the trilogy with the idea of making it a Christian apologetic and, in fact, claimed that he never started writing anything with a moral in mind, his faith was so completely a part of him that it could not help expressing itself even when he did not have that intention in mind. According to Austin Farrer in his …

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On The Southern Corn Rootworm, Denise Gayle Hanson Jan 1978

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On The Southern Corn Rootworm, Denise Gayle Hanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Insects continue to be one of the major problems of man. It is, however, becoming more and more difficult to find substances that are effective in controlling insects and that are environmentally safe. It has become apparent that to control or eliminate harmful insects, alternate methods of control must be developed to replace or reduce the use of insecticides. One possible alternate method of control is to use insects against themselves in a process called the sterile male technique. This technique generally uses gamma radiation to induce sterility in males. When they are released into the native population and mate …

Performance Of A Diurnally Tracking Solar Energy-Intensifier, Calvin E. Siegel Jan 1978

Performance Of A Diurnally Tracking Solar Energy-Intensifier, Calvin E. Siegel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States agricultural system provides numerous opportunities in which solar energy can be utilized. Low to moderate temperature rise collectors can provide a large percentage of the energy requirements normally met by using high quality fossil fuels. As world demand for food production increases due to a growing population, alternative sources of energy need to be developed and applied as substitutes for these increasingly scarce fossil fuels. Agriculture offers practical advantages for the use of solar heat energy because there exists sufficient area for solar collectors and a wide range of temperature applications on most farmsteads. Demand for energy …

Opaque-2 Corn In Finishing Swine Diets, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal Nov 1977

Opaque-2 Corn In Finishing Swine Diets, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977

Opaque-2 corn contains approximately 50 to 100% more lysine and 50% more tryptophan than normal corn varieties. Since these two amino acids are the most deficient normal corn varieties. Since these two amino acids are the most deficient in normal corn-supplement rations, the sue of opaque-2 corn in swine diets will reduce the amount of protein supplement needed. Previous research at South Dakota has shown that finishing pigs fed opaque-2 corn supplemented with lysine and threonine grew at a similar rate but required more feed/gain than pigs fed a 13% protein corn-soybean meal diet. The objective of this study was …

Compensatory Growth In Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal Nov 1977

Compensatory Growth In Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977

It is well known that young growing pigs have a higher dietary protein need than older finishing pigs. Previous research at this station, reported in A.S. Series 76-35. showed that pigs fed low-protein diets during early growth had reduced growth rate and increased feed/gain. Feeding an adequate protein diet after the deficient diet resulted in a trend for performance above that of designed to further study the effect of a short period of protein insufficiency on gain feed/gain during subsequent growth periods.

Dehydrated Alfalfa In Sow And Gilt Gestation Diets, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom Nov 1977

Dehydrated Alfalfa In Sow And Gilt Gestation Diets, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977

Swine Producers have used alfalfa as a feed constituent in a swine gestation diet for years. Theoretically, if sows would eat enough, alfalfa could be nearly complete feed with only vitamins, trace minerals and phosphorus supplemented. Bulky ground alfalfa is a relatively unpalatable feed for swine and dehydrated alfalfa initially is rejected as the sole feed source. However, several research stations have shown that sows will, with time, adjust to desirable levels of consumption of dehydrated alfalfa when fed as the only feed supplied or when fed with small quantities of grain initially. The study feed source for sows and …

South Dakota Feed Grains Used For Swine Feeds, L. J. Kortan Nov 1977

South Dakota Feed Grains Used For Swine Feeds, L. J. Kortan

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977

The value of a feedstuff is based on several factors; acceptability (how well the material will be consumed by an animal), energy availability and as a source of other nutrients (proteins, vitamins and minerals). Should a swine producer feed corn or wheat or barley or oats and others as a grain ingredient? In South Dakota, this will depend primarily upon availability, cost of these ingredients and their value as a souce of energy for swine.

Lysine-Energy Relationships In Diets For Growing And Finishing Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal, James L. Girard Nov 1977

Lysine-Energy Relationships In Diets For Growing And Finishing Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal, James L. Girard

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977

Increasing the energy content of swine diets will generally improve feed efficiency as less feed is consumed and rate of gain is not affected. Limited research with weaned pigs has indicated that the lysine requirement is increased as dietary energy increases when there are relatively large differences in dietary energy increases when there are relatively large differences in dietary energy content. Previous research at this station (A.S. Series 76-33) finishing pigs when 5% fat was included in corn-soybean diet. The experiment reported here was conducted to obtain additional information on the effect of lysine and energy relationships in diets fed …

Responses Of Two Strains To Amino Acid Additions In Low Protein Layer Diets, A. B. Kashani, C. W. Carlson Nov 1977

Responses Of Two Strains To Amino Acid Additions In Low Protein Layer Diets, A. B. Kashani, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977

It is well agreed among scientists that the better the balance of amino acids in the diet of poultry, the lower the bird's requirement for dietary protein. Generally, a lower protein content should result in lower cost of production and increased economic return. Studies at the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station showed that low protein com-soy diets for egg production are deficient in methionine, lysine arid tryptophan. A beneficial response was obtained in a recent study when the combination of isoleucine and valine was added to a 10% protein diet containing additions of methionine, lysine and tryptophan. Furthermore, a genetic …
