Ectrin Ear Tags For Horn Fly Control On Range Beef Cattle, P. H. Kohler, L. Blome

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1982

Ectrin ear tags are insecticide-impregnated with the active ingredient fenvalerate (8%). They are approved for use on lactating dairy cattle, beef cattle and calves. Each time an animal turns on tosses its head, a layer of Ectrin is rubbed or falls off onto the animal. As one insecticide layter is rubbed off, another forms. This action continues for the life of the tag. Advantages to this type of horn fly control are tagging is quick and easy using the All-Flex specially designed pliers, dampness or rain has little effect on efficacy, and the fly control reservoir is carried and used …

The Occurrence And Effects Of Entomophaga Grylli On Grasshopper Populations In South Dakota, Roger Allen Bohls

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect of Entomophaga grylli on grasshopper populations within South Dakota was investigated during a 2-year period. Field observations established that the state's 3 most important species of grasshoppers are susceptible to pathotype 2 infections. Outbreaks are believed to be initiated annually from the soil of undisturbed areas which act as the reservior for Entomophaga grylli resting spores. The occurrence of the fungus in regions of the state receiving 355 mm of rain during the growing season indicate pathotype 2 infection is maintained in dry environments. However, detailed epizootiol ogical studies of the fungus are needed before the potential of …

Assessment Of The Impact Of The European Corn Borer At Three Locations In South Dakota, David R. Raemisch Jan 1982

Assessment Of The Impact Of The European Corn Borer At Three Locations In South Dakota, David R. Raemisch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The European corn borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) varies as an

economically significant pest in South Dakota from south to north. In

the northern part of the state the European corn borer (ECB) is limited

to one generation per year. In contrast, there are localized sites

along the Missouri River in southern South Dakota which usually

experience a substantial second brood population. Infestation by

either first or second brood ECB occurs at different stages in the

developmental sequence of the corn plant. As such, each brood must be

considered separately when assessing relationships between yield loss

and ECB larval cavities within the …

A Short-Run Economic Analysis Of Some Factors Influencing The Supply Of Beef-Cattle At Auctions In South-Eastern Botswana, 1976-1980, Kene Patrick Cyril Sinombe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Auction sales provide a major cattle marketing outlet for farmers in Botswana. There were 5,740 cattle auctioned in the South-eastern part of Botswana in 1976. This number represented 16% of the total export off-take from the area. The main market outlet for slaughter beef is through direct marketing of cattle to the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) abattoir. The BMC, an export monopoly beef marketing board, sets prices and cattle buyers country-wide adjust them to derive producer prices, because they finally sell cattle to the BMC. The BMC price plays a major role in deriving producer prices at auction sales yards. …

Genetic Correlations Among Sex-Limited Traits, Michael D. Macneil Jan 1982

Genetic Correlations Among Sex-Limited Traits, Michael D. Macneil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used to assess the merits of three methods for calculation of the genetic correlation when traits have been measured on half-sibs of each sex. The restricted maximum likelihood, path coefficient and covariance component estimators did not differ significantly in their accuracy. Path coefficient and covariance component methodologies gave nearly unbiased estimators for traits of high heritability. Across both levels of heritability, the restricted maximum likelihood methodology resulted in genetic correlations being estimated with significantly smaller sampling variance than the other methods. Genetic correlations were estimated for age of puberty, weight at puberty, conceptions per service, …

Crude protein values for star duckweed ranged from 7.1 to …

Uses Of Figures Of Speech In Selected Speeches Of Jerry Falwell, Mary M. Gill Jan 1982

Uses Of Figures Of Speech In Selected Speeches Of Jerry Falwell, Mary M. Gill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As early as 350 B.C. Aristotle was cultivating concepts of language usage. It addition to the principles of clarity, accuracy, appropriateness and vividness, he developed concepts on the uses of the metaphor as a stylistic tool. The study of style and its adaptation continued to the Roman Age and the early study of rhetoric in England. During the eighteenth-century various rhetoricians began analyzing style more closely. Francis Bacon noted "the ill and unfit choice of words wonderfully obstructs the understanding. "He analyzed words and word combinations and their effect on interpretation. Adam Smith instructed that style was the common element …

The effects of interfering ions on the extraction efficiency have been studied. Conditions for the maximum extraction have been described. Optimal instrument parameters for the analysis of extracts have been determined. In most biological samples tellurium is found only in trace quantities. The necessity to determine traces of tellurium has raised difficult problems for analysts. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a technique …

Theories Of Image-Making In Hogarth, Reynolds And Blake, Anne C. Johnson Jan 1982

Theories Of Image-Making In Hogarth, Reynolds And Blake, Anne C. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of artistic imagination--literally, the process of image-making--the act of translating sensory information into visible symbols. Specifically, it is a study of three eighteenth century artists' detailed theories of imagination, and a comparison of the visual effects described by these theories. William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and William Blake ar~ three roughly contemporary artists who each describe a means of approaching nature, recording sensory facts and translating them into the images of art. I intend to pose three related questions to these artists and to seek answers in their respective treatises on aesthetic composition. Two of these …
