Energy Analysis Of Small-Scale Ethanol Distillation, Scott Stampe Mar 1982

Energy Analysis Of Small-Scale Ethanol Distillation, Scott Stampe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Steam consumption associated with the small-scale fractional distillation of ethanol at the South Dakota State University Alcohol Fuels Research Facility has been determined. During 1981, seven, ten, and thirteen percent ethanol concentrations in corn-beer were distilled to a 92.5 percent fuel ethanol product. Residual ethanol concentrations in spent stillage were studied at average levels of 0.13, ' 0.15, and 0.30 percent by volume. The total system energy requirement averaged 3.88 rnegajoules per liter (13,900 Btu per gallon) of anhydrous-equivalent ethanol, exclusive of boiler efficiency. Emperical relationships were established between the distillation energy requirement and two operating parameters. These parameters were …

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen Feb 1982

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seasonality of reproduction in sheep has created an oscillating supply of lambs. A more constant supply of lambs would allow more efficient use of facilities and labor by producers, feedlots and packing plants. Seasonal reproduction also limits the lifetime production of the ewe. Extension of the breeding season would provide a more consistent supply of lambs. In addition, more than one lamb crop per ewe could be produced annually. Not only the yearly lamb production but also the lifetime production of the ewe would then be increased. Also, the generation interval would be shortened allowing faster herd improvement. It is …

Protein Supplementation As Related To Protein Sources For Growing And Finishing Lambs, Luis Fernando Palmer Feb 1982

Protein Supplementation As Related To Protein Sources For Growing And Finishing Lambs, Luis Fernando Palmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The production of high-quality foods continues to offer an important challenge to livestock producers and animal scientists. People in many countries of the world consume diets which are inadequate in quantity and quality of nutrients. The animal industry plays a major role as a supplier of high-quality foods such as meat, milk and eggs for human nutrition. Protein is perhaps the most important nutrient provided by animal products because of its quality and availability in relation to human needs. Ruminants such as cattle and sheep have the unique ability to convert low quality feedstuffs to high quality food as animal …

Plants Poisonous To Livestock In Botswana, Pearl Dijeng Motsepe Feb 1982

Plants Poisonous To Livestock In Botswana, Pearl Dijeng Motsepe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Livestock plant poisoning is very common in Botswana. Two plants, Dichapetalum cymosum and Pavetta harborii, are especially notorious for causing large-scale mortality in some areas of the country. In 1975, for instance, a D. cymosurn poisoning outbreak killed 210 cattle in east central Botswana. In the same year P. harborii caused large-scale deaths of cattle in the Mochudi area. The losses caused alarm among livestock farmers and the problem was among the issues discussed in the 1975 session of the Botswana Parliament. Because of their potency, farmers in South Africa refer to these species as "sudden death 11 plants. Unlike …

High Performance Imagery : The Use Of Prose Poetry In James Welch's Riding The Earthboy 40 And Winter In The Blood, Sidner J. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

James Welch's combining of poetry and prose has given him a unique language with which to record his impression of life. In addition, welch has an excellent sense of reality that gives life to his writing. His rendition of lonely rural Montana is valid for much of interior America, and he is a master at tracing the implications of life in similar situations for all people who live with distance and harshness. one of the qualities I respect most about Riding the Earthboy 40, Winter in the Blood, and The Death of Jim Loney is that they communicate movingly about …

The Effects Of Excess Arginine On Lysine Utilization In Rats And Swine, David L. Hagemeier Jan 1982

The Effects Of Excess Arginine On Lysine Utilization In Rats And Swine, David L. Hagemeier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of adding supplemental protein to swine diets is to provide the levels of available essential amino acids and nitrogen necessary for maximum protein synthesis in the pig. Lysine has been determined to be the limiting amino acid in many swine diets. Thus, the real objective of protein supplementation is to provide the amount of lysine necessary for maximum protein synthesis, and if this objective is met the requirements for the other essential amino acids and nitrogen will generally be met. Since swine diets are formulated to meet the lysine requirement of the pig, it is necessary to derive …

Farm-Scale Production Of Fuel Ethanol And Distillers' Wet Grains From Corn And Corn-Whey Mixtures, William Ray Gibbons Jan 1982

Farm-Scale Production Of Fuel Ethanol And Distillers' Wet Grains From Corn And Corn-Whey Mixtures, William Ray Gibbons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the Arab oil embargo of 1973, we have become increasingly aware of the finite nature of our petroleum supplies. Current studies estimate that our supplies of petroleum will be depleted in the next 25 to 50 years. As supplies diminish and prices rise, we will need alternate forms of energy to take up the slack. One of the leading alternatives is the use of biomass in the production of liquid fuel that is, conversion of cellulose, starch, glucose, or other carbohydrates to ethanol. In the United States, the fuel ethanol industry is still in its infancy. Approximately a dozen …

Effect Of Length Of Feeding Period Of Performance Of British And Exotic Crossbred Yearling Heifers, D. L. Whittington, L. B. Bruce, A. Dittman, M. Esser

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1982

Producers very often question the additional length of time they should feed exotic-cross cattle as opposed to the feeding period required for the traditional British breeds of cattle. Also implied in this question in this question is the additional amount of feed needed for the exotic-cross animal to attain an optimum weight and an acceptable grade. This trial was conducted in an attempt to help answer these basic questions.

Repeatability Of Cow Efficiency, Weaning Weight And Milk Production In Angus, Charolais And Reciprocal Cross Cows, Brent A. Buckley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this day of increasing population and decreasing natural resources, man must continually search for more efficient methods of producing foodstuffs. The livestock industry must continue to improve its efficiency of production to remain a profitable producer of protein for the human populace. The pork and poultry industry have increased their efficiency of production through extensive use of cereal grains which could be utilized as human foodstuffs. Beef cattle, on the other hand, have the capability to utilize high roughage feedstuffs, such as grasses or crop residues, which are unavailable for human digestion. The beef cow, in particular, spends the …

Predicting Beef Palatability, L. K. Cost, C. A. Dinkel, W. J. Costello Jan 1982

Predicting Beef Palatability, L. K. Cost, C. A. Dinkel, W. J. Costello

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1982

The search for factors influencing the palatability of beef continues. The relative importance of variables in the USDA quality grading system that currently predicts acceptability and palatability has been questioned. The effect of marbling on palatability is one of the more controversial aspects. Marbling is one of the prime factors in determining the quality grade of a beef carcass and researchers have shown that other variables may play an equal or more important role influencing the eating quality of beef.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of commonly-used predictors of palatability and to consider the possible …

Preweaning And Postweaning Performance Of Crossbred Calves--0, 1 Or 2 Ralgro Implants, D. L. Whittington, G. Kuhl, A. Dittman

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1982

The preweaning performance of 221 steer and heifer calves given differing numbers of Ralgro implants was evaluated. The steer and heifer calves given one implant had an additional 23 and 33 lb weaning weight compared to those receiving no implant. No additional response was shown by steer calves receiving a second implant 100 days after the first was given. Average daily gains during the 105-day growing period were not significantly faster than those receiving two implants during the 103-day finishing phase.
This work supports other studies indicating that implanting calves at weaning time is an economical management practice. The work …

The Use Of Alfalfa Products As The Fiber Portion Of Beef Finishing Diets, R. A. Drake, L. D. Kamstra, R. M. Luther, L. B. Embry

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1982

This experiment was a continuation of research with alfalfa products as supplements and various types of high roughage and high grain rations. Products compared were alfafa haylage, conventional dehydrated alfalfa meal and an alfalfa pressed-cake by-product.
Alfalfa press cake is a by-product of the commercial product Pro-Xan, a leaf protein concentrate extracted from high quality, green-chopped alfalfa. The press cake, even with the soluble proteins removed, contains approximately 17% crude protein. Since it is a new product, its potential as a feed has yet to be established. It seemed appropriate to compare it to other alfalfa products now in common …
