Following Custer, D. R. Progluske, F. J. Shideler

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

This publication has several purposes. It compares the present landscape with that at the time of the Custer expedition by means of new and old photographs. Selected photographs taken by the expedition photographer William Illingworth reveal the forest under the sole influence of natural forces. A 1975 series of low-altitude helicopter photographs serves as a guide over the expedition route and shows the forest as it exists today.
Another purpose is to identify several 1874 photo sites, not discovered earlier and or documented in " Yellow Ore, Yellow Hair, Yellow Pine,"1 a 1974 account of the Black Hills expedition by …

Small-Scale Fuel Alcohol Production From Corn: Economic Feasibility Prospects, T. L. Dobbs, R. Hoffman

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

This publication on the economic feasibility of fuel alcohol production is based upon research conducted at South Dakota State University (SDSU) from 1981 through 1983. It is a companion to our recently published report entitled Small Scale Plant: Costs of Making Fuel Alcohol (SDSU Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletin 686, September 1982). That bulletin detailed the costs involved in fuel alcohol production. The present bulletin compares those costs to estimated returns from fuel alcohol and the feed byproduct. Both costs and returns are calculated on a 1981 basis.

Untreated And Microbial-Inoculated Corn Silage In High Silage Rations For Growing Cattle, J. G. Nothnagel, R. M. Luther, F. Palmer, L. B. Embry Jan 1983

Untreated And Microbial-Inoculated Corn Silage In High Silage Rations For Growing Cattle, J. G. Nothnagel, R. M. Luther, F. Palmer, L. B. Embry

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1983

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of inoculating corn forage which was more optimal in moisture content than that in the 1982 study with a Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation product. The response to inoculation was compared with untreated silage in terms of feedlot performance of growing steers fed high-silage rations. Preservation of silage dry matter, chemical quality and utilization of nutrients were also determined.

Lasalocid Or Monensin Supplementation For Short Periods Of Finishing, L. B. Embry, M. J. Goetz, R. M. Luther

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1983

Information is needed on response to lasalocid and monensin under conditions of rapid adaptation to high-concentrate diets and short periods of finishing for heavyweight cattle. Two experiments were conducted to obtain data when feeding under these conditions.
