For the past 8 years, I've been promoting eggs in the state of Missouri, 6 years of that time as the sole full-time employee of the Council, making the position one of lobbyist, office manager, promoter, trainer of promotion people, bookkeeper, writer of agendas and minutes for the egg producers, worrier about cholesterol, reacher-out to other states and regions in the egg industry.

Fatty Liver Disease And Different Grains, Chandi C. Rakshit, C. Wendell Carlson Nov 1984

Fatty Liver Disease And Different Grains, Chandi C. Rakshit, C. Wendell Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1984

The definite cause of fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) is still not certain. However, after several studies at this center we can say that the etiology is in part related to nutrition and metabolism as certain dietary ingredients have been shown to have some protective action against the disease (see A.S. Series 76-1, 77-27, 78-5, 79-24, 80-4, 81-5 and 83- 13).
The present experiment was conducted to study the effect of distiller's dried grain (DDG), oats and a mixture of both in layer diets on FLHS. FLHS was experimentally created by force feeding at 120% of the normal intake.

Meat And Bonemeal With Various Grains For Egg Production, Ali B. Kashani, C. Wendell Carlson Nov 1984

Meat And Bonemeal With Various Grains For Egg Production, Ali B. Kashani, C. Wendell Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1984

A preliminary study with limited numbers of hens indicated that meat and bonemeal provided a better protein supplement for wheat, or equal combinations of corn-oats or corn-oats-wheat than corn or oats alone for egg production. The study presently in progress is a repeat of the previous study with larger numbers of pullets at peak production.

Sunflower Meal As A Partial Or Total Replacement For Soybean Meal, Ali B. Kashani, C. Wendell Carlson Nov 1984

Sunflower Meal As A Partial Or Total Replacement For Soybean Meal, Ali B. Kashani, C. Wendell Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1984

In a series of two previous experiments, sunflower meal with additions of lysine and methionine had been shown to supplement corn to support a high rate of egg production. The present work was conducted to determine the efficacy of sun flower meal in replacing parts or all of the soybean meal in 16 or 14% protein diets for laying hens with methionine and with and without lysine supplementation.

Effects Of Pelleting, Aureomycin And Grower Diet On Egg Production, Ali B. Kashani, C. Wendell Carlson Nov 1984

Effects Of Pelleting, Aureomycin And Grower Diet On Egg Production, Ali B. Kashani, C. Wendell Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1984

Antibiotics have recently shown rather consistent trends in improving egg production rates of hens at older ages or after an adaptation period. The purpose of the study reported herein was to determine the effect of Aureomycin in mash or pelleted low density layer diets.

A Case Study In Rural Water Development: Impact On Livestock Producers, A. Lundeen Nov 1984

A Case Study In Rural Water Development: Impact On Livestock Producers, A. Lundeen

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Possible impacts of rural water systems on livestock production in the following areas were included in the study:
1. increased productivity because of good quality water;
2. production of added livestock if sufficient water were available; and
3. losses averted because of sufficient water during drought.
Two methodologies were used to estimate the impacts of a rural water system. . First, livestock production of members and nonmembers was compared to determine any significant differences between the groups. The impacts of the rural water system, as stated by members, were then quantified in a simulation model.

Meat And Bonemeal With Soybean Or Sunflower Meals As Protein Supplements For 12% Protein Layer Diets, C. Wendell Carlson, Ali B. Kashani Nov 1984

Meat And Bonemeal With Soybean Or Sunflower Meals As Protein Supplements For 12% Protein Layer Diets, C. Wendell Carlson, Ali B. Kashani

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1984

Previous studies at our station have shown meat and bone-meal to support sub-standard performance of laying hens when used as the sole protein supplement. In a 1981 report we showed that even when diets were fortified with amino acids to supply the NRG (1977) requirements, performance with meat and bone-meal was poor and increasingly so as protein was reduced from 16 to 14 to 12%. With sunflower meal, performance was not reduced with lower protein levels.

This report is a result of the fuel alcohol research team's broadened focus during 1983. A comprehensive literature review was carried out to explore alternative starch and sugar crop alternatives for ethanol fuel production. Although the literature search was quite inclusive with respect to geographic regions, special emphasis was given to the agronomic and economic potential of various fuel alcohol crops in the Northern Plains region of the U.S., of which South Dakota is a part, and in LDCs of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Our intent was to thereby determine possible energy crops deserving of more fuel alcohol research …

Robert Bly And The Twofold Consciousness, Mary A. Thelen Mar 1984

Robert Bly And The Twofold Consciousness, Mary A. Thelen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"How beautiful to walk out at midnight in the moonlight/ dreaming of animals." It is samplings of Robert Bly's poetry such as these which have prompted Eliot Weinberger to wonder, "What kind of windbag and language slob would write such a line?" But there are also such fine and startling images as "The bare trees more dignified than ever" or "lamplight that falls on all fours in the grass," which Ian Hamilton admires. Hayden Carruth has encapsulated the view of many of Bly's readers, who regard him as one of the most annoying and exciting poets of the 1960's and …

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler Mar 1984

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most cereal-based diets for swine. Thus, in cereal-based diets the lysine- requirement must be met first if the pig's protein anabolism is to be efficient and maximal. The most widely used diet in the swine industry today is the corn-soybean meal diet. Corn is deficient in lysine, but soybean meal is a relatively good source of lysine, so soybean. meal is added to the corn base to increase the diet's lysine content. Synthetic lysine also can be added to corn-soybean meal diets to increase lysine content or added as a replacement for …

Possible Relationships Between Surface Water Chemistry And Aquatic Plants In The Northern Great Plains, Kristin K. Sletten Mar 1984

Possible Relationships Between Surface Water Chemistry And Aquatic Plants In The Northern Great Plains, Kristin K. Sletten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The possibility of establishing relationships between surface water chemistry and the occurrence of certain aquatic plant species was investigated on 281 wetland sites throughout the northern Great Plains. Ninety-seven species of aquatic plants were selected for the study, selection being based on the direct association of plants with water and on the number of sites at which the plants were found. The ranges and means of surface water conductivity, total alkalinity and pH values were determined on a species by species basis. Of the three chemical parameters measured, conductivity of surface water appeared to have the greatest influence on the …
