Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger Jan 1999

Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger

SDSU Extension Circulars

The budgets in this publication are based on approved farming practices and nutritionally balanced rations. Feed ingredients are priced on their comparative feed values. Com is used as the base for feed grain and other grains are priced based on their relative feed value to com. Alfalfa hay is used as the base for roughage. All roughage and succulents are priced as a percent of alfalfa hay. The livestock husbandman who uses the least-cost rations should not see significant changes in profitability by interchanging feed ingredients.

U Of M Sheep Program: What We Are Doing And What We Have Learned, Bill Head Jan 1999

U Of M Sheep Program: What We Are Doing And What We Have Learned, Bill Head

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999

Research has taken an inter disciplinary turn . By this we mean that we have a team of researchers that work on projects to get the most out of our research dollar. We have assembled a team that consists of animal scientists, forage agronomists, ag economists, soil scientists, and water quality specialists to better address questions that producers ask. Recent research has focused primarily in three areas 1) animal performance in a forage based production system (pre- and post-weaning), 2) extending the grazing season, and 3) the economics of our research findings.

Wool Vs. Lamb Production, Rodney Kott, Pat Hatfield, Mike Schuldt Jan 1999

Wool Vs. Lamb Production, Rodney Kott, Pat Hatfield, Mike Schuldt

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999

Most sheep produce a merchandisable, usable fiber. However, the amount and quality varies from extremely high levels in sheep such as the Australian Merino to the meat-type breeds that usually produce minimal amounts of fiber. Most of the variation in fiber producing ability of sheep is a result of selection. Emphasis placed on fiber production in the U.S. varies greatly. The part that fiber production should play in a production system in the present and future of the sheep industry is subject to a great deal of debate among both producers and academicians.

Evaluation Of The Effect Of High Oil Corn Diets On Lamb Performance, A. L. Slyter, Rud Wasson Jan 1999

Evaluation Of The Effect Of High Oil Corn Diets On Lamb Performance, A. L. Slyter, Rud Wasson

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999

The availability of corn varieties with higher oil content may offer an advantage as feed stuffs for various species and classes of livestock. Higher oil content increases the energy density in the feed stuff, potentially leading to improved performance and/or efficiency of gain. Additional benefits suggested are dust reduction, reduced energy for processing and improved palatability. Most research to date has been with swine and poultry diets. The object of these trials was to evaluate the effect of high oil corn com pared to normal corn in pre-weaning and post-weaning diets for lambs.

Dakota Ram Test Program Final Reports: 1997-98 And 1998-99, Jeff Held

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999

The Dakota Ram Testing program was established primarily to identify differences in wool traits for rams managed under the same environmental conditions and plane of nutrition and, secondly, to measure postweaning growth rate as indicated by weight gain. An added feature is evaluation of animal carcass merit using real-time ultrasound technology.

Food Habits And Diet Overlap Of Age-1 And Older Walleye And White Bass In Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, Andrew B. Starostka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

White bass Marone chysops and walleye Stizostedion vitreum coexist in several of the large glacial lakes in eastern South Dakota. I collected age-1 and older white bass and walleye in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota during May, July and September, 1998 to determine food habits and diet overlap using percent by weight to describe diets and Schoener's index (Cxy) to determine diet overlap. Macroinvertebrates were common prey items for white bass in all length groups during all sample dates. The primary macroinvertebrates consumed by white bass were corixids, amphipods and dipterans. Fish, as a group, were second in diet importance over …

Seasonal Investigation Of Native Fishes And Their Habitats In Missouri River And Yellowstone River Backwaters, Shannon J. Fisher Jan 1999

Seasonal Investigation Of Native Fishes And Their Habitats In Missouri River And Yellowstone River Backwaters, Shannon J. Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interactions between the Missouri River and its floodplain have been severely degraded due to channelization and impoundment. Ecologists have assumed that backwaters are a critical habitat component for certain life stages of native fishes; however, documented relationships are limited. During this study, I monitored fishes, invertebrates, and habitats to help determine the importance of backwaters to native fishes of various life stages, and to assess the changes that occur in habitat characteristics and invertebrate densities during periods with differential connectivity. Seven assemblages of fishes, identified with catch-per-unit-effort data, had at least some relationship with the backwaters. The assemblages included two …

Bovine Neonatal Cryptosporidiosis - Prevalence And Public Health Issues, Kelly Namminga, Bill Epperson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Cryptosporidiosis (crypto), a disease affecting both animals and humans, is caused by the organism Cryptosporidium. This is not a bacteria or virus but a group of parasitic protozoans (single-celled organisms that live off other organisms). There are several species of Cryptosporidium, most of which infect only specific species of animals.

The Mortenson Ranch: Cattle And Trees At Home On The Range. A Restoration Guidebook, Susan E. Boettcher, W. Carter Johnson, Scott Kronberg, F. Robert Gartner, Clarence Todd, Jeff Mortenson, Scott Fausti

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Early agriculture on western rangeland met with little success and resulted in serious consequences including soil erosion, loss of native woodlands and wildlife, and economic ruin. The Mortenson family in Stanley County, South Dakota, has been engaged in restoring degraded rangeland on their ranch for more than 50 years. Their primary goal has been to return the land to its condition prior to white settlement while maintaining a profitable cattle ranching operation. In recent years the ranch has served as a model of successful ranching based on a conservation ethic. This guidebook summarizes the restoration techniques and grazing regime used …
