Effect Of Calving Time And Weaning Time On Cow And Calf Performance - A Preliminary Report, R. J. Pruitt, B. Epperson, B. Johnson, D. Zalesky, R. Haigh, D. Young
South Dakota Beef Report, 2000
Cows grazing native range year round were allotted to 3 management systems: 1.) A calving season starting in mid March with calves weaned in late October; 2) A calving season starting in mid March with calves weaned in mid September; and 3) A calving season starting early May with calves weaned in late October. After 2 years of the study, pregnancy rate and calving interval were not affected by management system. Average weaning weight was the highest for the March calving/October weaned group in both years. In the first year of the study, severe winter weather caused a lower calf …

The Gendered World Of Disney: A Content Analysis Of Gender Themes In Full-Length Animated Disney Feature Films, Beth A. Wiersma
The Gendered World Of Disney: A Content Analysis Of Gender Themes In Full-Length Animated Disney Feature Films, Beth A. Wiersma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research has focused on the gender messages portrayed in television programs, cartoons, advertisements, literature, picture books, and fairy tales. One venue that has not received as much attention in the research is the Disney 1 full-length animated feature films. This is a qualitative study of the gender themes and portrayal of gender roles in full-length animated feature films by The Walt Disney Company. The findings in this research indicate there has been little change in the stereotyped portrayals of Disney characters from the release of the first full-length animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 to …

Aurelia: A Crow Creek Trilogy, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn
Aurelia: A Crow Creek Trilogy, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn
Elizabeth Cook-Lynn Collection
A collection of three novellas spanning several decades, Aurelia tells of the invasion of Indian lands, the destruction of a river--the Missouri, or Mni Sosa--in the twentieth century, the continued failure of the people of the Northern Plains (both Indian and white) to refute historical fraud, and the grief and joy of an American Indian family.
The first novella in this collection, From the River's Edge (first published as a single volume by Arcade Publishing, 1991), is the story of John Tatekeya's (tah-tAY-kee-ya) efforts to obtain reparation in a white man's court for forty-five head of stolen cattle. Even as …

Pruning Deciduous Shrubs, John Ball, David Graper
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Shrubs are an important feature of any ornamental landscape. They accent the home, provide seasonal color, serve as shelter and food for wildlife and, if properly placed, reduce home heating and cooling costs. Unfortunately, if shrubs are improperly maintained, their value in the landscape can diminish and they may become liabilities rather than assets.

Historical Evolution Of Crop Systems In Eastern South Dakota: Economic Influences, Linda Dumke, Thomas L. Dobbs
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
Cropping systems in the United States and throughout much of the world have moved toward shorter and less diverse rotations during the last half of the twentieth century. However, as we approach the new millennium, there is growing concern about the ecological sustainability of monocultures and such narrow rotations as the com-soybean rotation. Problems of pest control, crop disease, groundwater contamination from chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and soil erosion are proving to be very difficult when crop rotation systems lack diversity. "Silver bullet" technologies sometimes buy time, but without diversity, new ecological problems soon replace the problem just "solved" with …

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Agricultural land values and cash rental rates in South Dakota, by region and by state, are the primary topics of this report, which is written for farmers and ranchers, landowners, agricultural professionals (lenders, rural appraisers, professional farm managers, Extension agents, and educators), and policy makers interested in agricultural land market trends. This report contains the results of the 1999 SDSU South Dakota Farm Real Estate Market Survey, the ninth annual SDSU survey developed to estimate agricultural land values and cash rental rates by land use in different regions of South Dakota.

A Field Guide To South Dakota Amphibians, T. D. Fischer, D. C. Backlund, K. F. Higgins, D. E. Naugle
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Amphibians possess a unique combination of physical and biological characteristics which make them sensitive to environmental changes such as pollution and loss of aquatic habitat. Amphibians also play an important role in food chains where they may constitute large portions of other animals' diets. While small fishes or other amphibians prey upon larval amphibians, many mammals and birds rely on a dult amphibians for food. Amphibians also are economically important locally and regionally. For example, local bait dealers sell frogs to anglers and schools buy frogs from biological supply companies for use in classroom dissection exercises.

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Our goal in compiling this bibliography was to locate "every" published article with a connection to "any" wild South Dakota mammal. However, we understood from the start that this goal would be unattainable. Consequently, this collection can provide only a point of origin to readers interested in obtaining published studies (popular and scientific) about the wild mammals of South Dakota.

Lamb Growth Efficiency And Optimum Finished Weight, Jeff Held
Lamb Growth Efficiency And Optimum Finished Weight, Jeff Held
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999
In the sheep enterprise, lamb sales account for more than 90 percent of gross revenue. Most analyses indicate profitable sheep production is dependent on market prices, pounds of lamb weaned or sold per ewe exposed and the unit cost of production. Producers have little control annually over selling price for their lambs, but they do control production efficiency. Ewe productivity and ewe/lamb feed cost containment are important parameters for all types of flock management systems whether a feeder lamb or finished lamb production emphasis. It is important to excel in each area independent of the type of operation . The …

A Comparison Of Fall Vs Spring Lambing Performance Of Hampshire And Columbia Ewes (Progress Report), A. L. Slyter, Chad Miller, Rud Wasson
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999
Seasonality of lamb production continues to be a major hurdle for the sheep industry. The lack of a continuous supply of fresh lamb impacts both the processing and retail segments of the industry. The seasonal fluctuation in supply and quality results in sporadic buying patterns by consumers and ultimately less shelf space and therefore less product in the meat case. Often lamb cuts are not available in retail outlets or only on a seasonal basis making sustained consumption levels difficult. In many cases seasonal production also results in inefficient use of facilities, labor and management for the producer. This study …
