South Dakota Soil Classification Key, D. D. Malo
South Dakota Soil Classification Key, D. D. Malo
Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)
South Dakota has many different kinds of soils. To keep the characteristics and qualities of these soils in mind, grouping them systematically into a classification scheme is necessary. The classification of soils:
(1) aids in remembering characteristics of individual soils,
(2) clarifies relationships between soils,
(3) aids in discovering new facts,
(4) clarifies relationships between soils and their environment, and
(5) aids in a person's ability to predict properties of unknown soil based on similar, known soils.

A Comparison Of Methods For On-Farm Determination Of Failure Of Passive Transfer Of Immunoglobulin To Dairy Calves, Ann Harvey
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Two commercially available, qualitative, on-farm test kits (Midland BioProducts Inc., Boone, lA), utilizing either serum or whole blood to evaluate failure of passive transfer (FPT) of immunoglobulins, were evaluated using 38 Holstein calves. Results from the kits were compared with refractometry determination of serum proteins and radial immunodiffusion determinations specific for IgG (RID; Triple J Farms, Bellingham,WA). Blood samples were collected immediately following birth before first colostrum feeding and at 48 h. At birth, serum protein concentrations averaged 4.52 g/dl and IgG averaged 8.6 mg/dl, respectively, for refractometer and RID. Forty eight hours after feeding colostrum, serum protein concentrations averaged …
Toxicity Potential Of Aqueous Kava Extracts On Liver Function Tests In Rats, Ashwini K. Devkota
Toxicity Potential Of Aqueous Kava Extracts On Liver Function Tests In Rats, Ashwini K. Devkota
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Kava, prepared as the traditional aqueous infusion, was tested in the rat for possible effects on liver function tests. Extracts were administered in dosages containing 200 or 500 mg of the active kavalactones per kg for two or four weeks. Sera were assayed for four enzymes that are markers of liver toxicity and liver homogenates for malondiadehyde formation that indicates changes in lipid peroxidation. The data showed that none of the enzymes, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase, nor malondialdehyde levels were elevated, in fact in some cases they were significantly reduced, suggesting the lack of a …
The Well-Being Of Children As Viewed Through Their Conceptions Of Death, Jennifer Kampmann
The Well-Being Of Children As Viewed Through Their Conceptions Of Death, Jennifer Kampmann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An explorative study was conducted to try and understand how young children’s emerging death concepts form including, (a) what family demographics and child factors contributed to family well-being, (b) did family well-being influence children’s social competence, and (c) did family well-being and children’s social competence influence children’s death conceptions. Although the subject of death contains many unique characteristics, it is not easily separated from other aspects of life; death is inseparable from the whole human experience (DeSpelder & Strickland, 2002). It was the assumption of this paper that children develop their conceptions of death based on the appreciation they hold …

Protection Against A Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (Bvdv) Type 1 Challenge In Calves Vaccinated With A Bovine Herpesvirus-1 (Bhv-1)-Bvdv Recombinant, Heather J. Swan, Lyle J. Braun, Leonard J. Bello, William C. Lawrence, Reg D. Neiger, Christopher C.L. Chase
South Dakota Beef Report, 2003
A recently developed recombinant bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) virus containing the envelope protein gp53 of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) type 1, BHV-1 (v1V31), was assessed for its ability to protect against BVDV in calves. Four calves were vaccinated intranasally with the recombinant BHV-1-BVDV vaccine and did not exhibit any clinical signs following vaccination. The vaccine virus was recovered from all vaccinated calves on days 8 through 10 and the replication appeared to be restricted to nasal passages. Twenty-eight days after vaccination, the four vaccinated and four control calves were challenged with the type 1 BVDV, strain NY-1. All calves …

Animal Science Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of three objective systems (prototype BeefCam, colorimeter, and slice shear force) for identifying guaranteed tender beef. In Phase I, 308 carcasses (105 Top Choice, 101 Low Choice, and 102 Select) from two commercial plants were tested. In Phase II, 400 carcasses (200 rolled USDA Select and 200 rolled USDA Choice) from one commercial plant were tested. The three systems were evaluated based on progressive certification of the longissimus as “tender” in 10% increments (the best 10, 20, 30%, etc., certified as “tender” by each technology; 100% certification would mean no …

Analysis Of U.S.-Canada Intra-Industry Trade, Bashir Qasmi, Scott Fausti, Moore Liuyi
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Determinants of U.S.- Canada Intra-industry trade in industry groups: a) Food and live products, b) Manufacturing products, and c) Machinery and transportation products are investigated. The analysis uses the OECD data for 1997 U.S.-Canada bilateral trade flows combined with the U.S. industry characteristics data from the U.S. Economic Census. Levels of intra-industry trade, measured by the Grubel Lloyd Index, were regressed on a number of industry characteristics using OLS techniques. Empirical results show that selected measures of product differentiation, economies of scale, and oligopolistic behavior are important determinants of U.S.-Canada bilateral trade in the selected industries. There are however, differences …

Incorporating High Nitrate Feed Into Feeding Programs, Trey Patterson
Incorporating High Nitrate Feed Into Feeding Programs, Trey Patterson
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
When drought hits and feed is short, producers wonder if they can provide high nitrate feeds to their cattle. The answer is “Yes, if you know what you’re doing.” Nitrates can be very dangerous to cattle, causing reduced performance, abortions, and death. Know the toxicity symptoms and toxic levels of nitrates before using high nitrate feedstuffs in your feeding program. Refer to SDSU Extension Extra 4015 (Nitrate Poisoning of Livestock) for specifics regarding nitrate poisoning and guidelines for safe nitrate levels in animal diets. While nitrates feeds are dangerous to cattle, they can be fed if properly managed. Toxic effects …
Limit-Feeding Cows In A Drylot, Cody Wright
Limit-Feeding Cows In A Drylot, Cody Wright
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Providing forage for cow herds is normally paramount to maintaining a desirable level of productivity. But during drought years, the supply of standing and harvested forages may be extremely limited and/or very expensive. Relocating the cow herd into drylot is a management alternative that may allow producers to take advantage of inexpensive grains and byproduct feeds to formulate cost effective cow diets.
Use Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs) In Swine Diets, Bob Thaler
Use Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs) In Swine Diets, Bob Thaler
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
More and more ethanol co-products are available for livestock feed because of the rapid growth of the ethanol industry in South Dakota. The three main co-products are Distillers Grains, Solubles, and Distillers Grains with Solubles, and they can be either “wet” or “dried” depending on the manufacturing process. Since, in the U.S., on-farm feed mixing and swine feeding systems are almost exclusively designed for dry feed, we deal here only with the dried products. All ethanol plants in South Dakota mainly produce Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS), limiting our discussion further to only DDGS as a feed ingredient for …

Managing Pastures During And After Drought, Barry H. Dunn, Patricia S. Johnson
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Drought provides dramatic evidence of the role of short- and long-term management of native rangeland and tame pastures. Proper management of range and pasture resources during drought is critical for sustainable livestock production and centers on one key strategy: reducing stocking rate.
