Effect Of Supplemental Fat From Dried Distillers Grains With Solubles Or Corn Oil On Cow Performance, Igf-1, Gh, And Nefa Concentrations, Abigail Bartosh, Cody Wright, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, George Perry
South Dakota Beef Report, 2007
Research has demonstrated that supplemental fat and(or) changes in growth hormone (GH) or insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations may affect reproductive performance in beef females. Dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) contain approximately 10% to 15% fat; however, minimal research to date has investigated DDGS specifically as a supplemental fat source. The objective of this experiment was to investigate whether supplemental fat from either DDGS or raw corn oil impacts cow growth performance and plasma GH, IGF-1, or non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. Sixty open beef cows [body weight (BW) = 553.5 ± 38.7 kg; body condition score (BCS) = …

Coping With High-Priced Corn, Cody Wright, Ken Olson, Julie Walker, Erik Loe, Alvaro Garcia
Coping With High-Priced Corn, Cody Wright, Ken Olson, Julie Walker, Erik Loe, Alvaro Garcia
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Feed costs represent 50 to 70% of livestock production expenses and are a critical component of livestock profitability. In the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Plains, corn grain is a primary source of energy in livestock diets. Consequently, as the price of corn escalates, so does the cost of feeding livestock. But cost isn’t all: you also must address dietary and management considerations when coping with increased corn prices.
High Priced Corn And Dairy Cow Rations, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur, Arnold Hippen, Rebecca Schafer
High Priced Corn And Dairy Cow Rations, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur, Arnold Hippen, Rebecca Schafer
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Corn grain usually makes up 30 to 35% of the total ration dry matter (DM) of a typical Midwest lactating cow diet. Changes in its price, therefore, can have a significant impact on total feed costs. Even with high corn prices, however, it is unlikely that corn grain will be removed completely from the ration. Corn grain, due to its high starch content, permits the formulation of energy-dense rations required by cows with high genetic merit for milk production. Adequate starch concentrations in corn grain also promote growth of rumen bacteria and protozoa essential for optimum forage fermentation. On the …

If You Find A Dead Bird— And Wonder If It Has The Bird Flu Virus, E. Kim Cassel, Tanya D. Graham, Lon Kightlinger
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
South Dakotans have been vigilant, sending dead blue jays, magpies, crows, hawks, owls, and eagles into the South Dakota Department of Health, seeking to know if the birds died fromWest Nile virus (WNV). We can stop looking. WNV is in South Dakota to stay. There is nothing further we can learn from testing birds forWNV. Therefore, if you find an individual dead blue jay, magpie, or crow, dispose of the bird, taking the safety precautions listed on the next page. But we cannot let down our guard. Birds are considered to be reservoirs for almost all influenza virsues, and occasionally …

Effects Of Increasing The Energy Density Of A Lactating Ewe Diet By Replacing Grass Hay With Soybean Hulls And Dried Distillers Grains With Solubles, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Robert Zelinsky, Jeffrey Held
South Dakota Sheep Research Reports, 2006-07
The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of increasing the energy density of a lactating ewe diet by replacing grass hay (GH) with soybean hulls (SH) and replacing soybean meal (SBM) with dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on ewe body condition, milk production and nutrient composition, and lamb performance. Sixteen 2-year-old ewes were selected based on a common lambing date. All diets contained 60% roughage and 40% concentrate. Dietary roughage source, however varied from completely GH to completely SH, and SBM was replaced by DDGS. Diets were formulated to contain 13.9% CP and an increasing amount …
Pasture Lease Agreements, Burton Pflueger
Pasture Lease Agreements, Burton Pflueger
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Any lease is basically an agreement that gives the use of an asset to a lessee for a specific period of time at a specified rate. A lease does not transfer title of ownership nor an equity interest in the asset. Labeling a document as a lease does not necessarily mean it is a lease according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This Extension Extra does not address any of the questions concerning the IRS treatment of a lease; if you have such questions, contact your tax management professional. Also, this document does not address any of the questions concerning …
Effect Of Coyotes And Release Site Selection On Survival And Movement Of Translocated Swift Foxes In The Badlands Ecosystem Of South Dakota, Greg M. Schroeder
Effect Of Coyotes And Release Site Selection On Survival And Movement Of Translocated Swift Foxes In The Badlands Ecosystem Of South Dakota, Greg M. Schroeder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Success of different release strategies for swift fox (Vulpes velox) translocation was evaluated in the Badlands Ecosystem in southwestern South Dakota. Release site selection (outside coyote [Canis latrans] core-use areas compared to random release sites) and release method (i.e., hard, semi-hard, and soft) were examined to determine effects on swift fox survival and movements at 50 days post-release. I hypothesized that swift foxes released outside of coyote core-use areas would survive at a higher rate than foxes released at random sites. From 2003-2006, 16 adult coyotes were fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) radio collars and monitored during the pup …
Status, Distribution, And Density Of White-Tailed Jackrabbits And Black-Tailed Jackrabbits In South Dakota, Dustin J. Schaible
Status, Distribution, And Density Of White-Tailed Jackrabbits And Black-Tailed Jackrabbits In South Dakota, Dustin J. Schaible
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The status of jackrabbit (Lepus spp.) populations throughout the Northern Great Plains has been a cause for concern by wildlife managers in recent years and there has been a paucity of information about the ecology of the white-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii) and the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) in South Dakota. Since there have been little monitoring efforts for hares, 21 permanent spotlight line transects were established across South Dakota for future surveying efforts. These transects were surveyed to obtain baseline information about jackrabbit density and distribution throughout the state. Jackrabbit density was highest in the northwestern portions of the state …

Effects Of Letter Transposition In Subliminal Primes On Perceived Content Of Abstract Images, C.S. Bailey, Amanda K. Harsin, Suzie Heffernan
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Subliminal presentation of a stimulus can influence responses to later stimuli. This effect is known as priming. The current study used Microsoft PowerPoint as a novel, low-cost paradigm to present experimental stimuli. Thirty-one undergraduate participants viewed a PowerPoint presentation that contained conditions with no, with unscrambled, and with center-scrambled sexually-themed messages. The effects of gender, counterbalancing, and type of message on perceived sexual content in experimenter-made inkblots was assessed. The current study failed to find any significant differences or interaction effects between any of the variables. A post-hoc analysis revealed a significant priming effect. Possible confounding variables and suggestions for …
Vibration Analysis Of A Boat And Dock, Annicka Gunderson
Vibration Analysis Of A Boat And Dock, Annicka Gunderson
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
A structure is designed to withstand the maximum force that will be applied. In this case a boat dock is examined as a spring system. This exercise uses a typical design for a lake side boat dock, tires for buoys, and an average fishing boat. Vibration analysis can predict when the highest forces will occur. A solution can be found to graph the motion of the dock. In addition to the analytical solution, the MATLAB program is used to visualize the vibrations. With these tools the magnitude and timing of forces can be verified.

Assessment Of Biosecurity Procedures To Prevent Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Cross Contamination, Rebecca Aden
Assessment Of Biosecurity Procedures To Prevent Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Cross Contamination, Rebecca Aden
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a common virus among cattle, and there are many different strains of the virus. BVDV can cause mucosal disease in infected cattle. There are lab strains of BVDV used for testing, but there are also wild-type viruses that may develop within a herd or population. These wild-type strains can be dangerous due to cross contamination between herds. This project compares serum samples from two different herds on the basis of the antibody response to a wild-type virus isolated from a persistent infected animal in one of the herds. We tested for a possible cross …

Gender Portrayal In J.K. Rowling's “Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix”: A Feminist Rhetorical Criticism, Nicole Ackman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined J.K. Rowling’s (2003) novel entitled, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Although this novel has not yet been classified as a fairy tale, it does contain fairy tale elements. This study reviewed literature in the field of folklore, fairy tales, and feminism. Foss’ (2004) four-step feminist criticism model was employed to analyze gender portrayals in the novel. According to Foss’ model, the novel was analyzed for masculine or feminine perspectives of the world, effects on the audience, improvement of women’s lives, and impact on rhetorical theory. Although Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix …

Relationship Of Plasma Ghrelin Concentrations With End-Products Of Carbohydrate Fermentation For Beef Cattle During A Feeding Interval, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Jay Daniel, Jeff Clapper, Allen Trenkle, Donald Beitz
South Dakota Beef Report, 2007
Four steers (BW 1281±28.2 lb) were used to determine the relationship of plasma ghrelin concentrations with end-products of carbohydrate fermentation and hormones and metabolites indicative of nutrition status during a 12-h feeding interval. A common high-energy diet was offered at 240% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (2.4xM) or 80% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (0.8xM). At initiation of period I, 2 steers were allowed 2.4xM intake, whereas intake for the remaining 2 steers was restricted to 0.8xM. Equal aliquots of feed were offered at 0800 and at 2000 h. On 7, 14, and 21 d following …

Plasma Ghrelin Concentrations Of Beef Cattle Consuming A Similar Amount Of Dietary Energy Supplied By Different Ingredients, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Jeff Clapper, Jenny Thurlow, Donald Beitz, Allen Trenkle
South Dakota Beef Report, 2007
Previous research demonstrated that restricting nutrient intake by decreasing DMI of a high-grain diet increased plasma ghrelin concentrations. Objectives of this experiment were to determine 1) whether dietary ingredient composition influenced plasma ghrelin concentrations when energy intake was similar, and 2) whether relationships existed between plasma ghrelin concentrations and plasma insulin, NEFA, and GH concentrations or end-products of carbohydrate fermentation in the rumen. Five steers (1290 ± 39.9 lb) were used in a crossover design with dietary treatments of 50% hay-50% concentrate (HAY) offered at an amount that would meet the steer’s NEm requirement plus supply an additional 3.5 Mcal …

Effects Of Increasing The Dietary Energy Density By Replacing Grass Hay With Soybean Hulls And Dried Distillers Grains With Solubles On Nutrient Digestibility And Rumen Fermentation, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Robert Zelinsky, Jeffrey Held
South Dakota Sheep Research Reports, 2006-07
We hypothesize that soybean hulls (SH) and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) can be used in lamb diets to increase dietary energy density compared with a traditional grass hay (GH) and soybean meal (SBM) diet without causing adverse effects on nutrient digestibility and rumen function. To test this hypothesis, four ruminally-cannulated wethers were used in a 4x4 Latin square design to determine the effects of replacing GH with SH and replacing SBM with DDGS on nutrient digestibility and rumen fermentation. All diets were formulated to contain 60% roughage and 40% concentrate on DM basis. Dietary roughage source, however, varied …

Dust Emission From South Dakota Cattle Feedlots, Rick Weber
Dust Emission From South Dakota Cattle Feedlots, Rick Weber
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dust and particle emissions (PM) from cattle feedlots is a concern for producers in order to maintain good relations with neighbors and also to comply with the EPA proposed PM2.5 particulate emission rules. Dust at 2.5 microns, which cannot be seen by the naked eye, is a potential health hazard since it can be ingested into the lungs of humans. One of the proposed regulations of the Federal Clean Air Act is to apply the PM2.5 standard to the agricultural sector. This research project examines the particulate matter dust emissions of various sizes in microns including 2.5, 10, …
