An Exploratory Study : Hispanic/Latino Oef/Oif U.S. Military Veterans Readjusting Post Deployment, Susana Ochoa
An Exploratory Study : Hispanic/Latino Oef/Oif U.S. Military Veterans Readjusting Post Deployment, Susana Ochoa
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
There are a growing number of service members being deployed and sent to war, heightening the need to explore and address the concerns of U.S. military veterans. Current research on post deployed military veterans is limited by the lack of an equal representation of ethnic minorities in their study populations. This exploratory study attempted to investigate how Hispanic/Latino U.S. military veterans who deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom, were readjusting to life post deployment. This study used an online survey consisting of demographic questions and the Post Deployment Readjustment Inventory (Katz, in press). A purposive sample of …
Codependency Among Only Children As Predicted By Parenting Styles Practiced In Family-Of-Origin, Rachel Ellen Carfora
Codependency Among Only Children As Predicted By Parenting Styles Practiced In Family-Of-Origin, Rachel Ellen Carfora
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study sought to explore whether there is a relationship between only children and codependence as predicted by parenting style in family-of-origin. While past literature looks at codependency and perceived parenting styles, none focus specifically upon the experience of only-children who are thought to be more influenced by family-of-origin dynamics. Therefore, this study also intended to explore whether this relationship was significant enough to invite future research and investigation. Two fixed online questionnaires were completed by 51 participants who met inclusion criteria for being older than 21-years-of-age and an only child as defined by not having grown up with any …
Majority Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action In The Workplace : A Survey Based On The Kuklinski List Experiment, Sonnie Chong
Majority Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action In The Workplace : A Survey Based On The Kuklinski List Experiment, Sonnie Chong
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine majority attitudes toward affirmative action (AA) in the workplace, since the future of AA may depend on these views. Conservatives generally oppose AA but it may be that most liberals do also, according to studies modeled on the Kuklinski List Experiment (LE). The LE employs indirect means to help reveal covert attitudes toward sensitive subjects. Based on this previous research, this study's prime hypothesis was that most White liberals harbor antagonism towards AA, contrary to expectation. Participants were invited to take an Internet based survey which utilized LE methodology. The main result …
Gathering Strengths And Resiliencies Of Low-Income Joint And Custodial Fathers Of Color : A Focus Group Study, Jamil Malik Davis
Gathering Strengths And Resiliencies Of Low-Income Joint And Custodial Fathers Of Color : A Focus Group Study, Jamil Malik Davis
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The low-income father of color has been poorly represented in research studies relating to positive aspects of their involvement as fathers. Researchers have shown that studies that positively reflect the involvement of fathers are often overrepresented by samples of white fathers, while fathers of color are often labeled as absent, non-resident, peripheral, and deadbeat. Current research is beginning to explore the positive qualities of this marginalized group through studies that document the potential for fathers of color to serve as positive role models. This research gathered data from two focus groups (n=9 and n=5) of low-income African American and Hispanic …
Strategy And Power In Contemporary Clinical Practice : A Theoretical Examination Of Family Preservation Philosophy And Strategic Family Therapy In The Context Of Poverty, Emily Erchick
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study reviewed family therapy and child welfare literature in the context of poverty. Clinical practice with low-income families was investigated historically. The literature brought to life issues of clinical power and aspects of social control and social reform inherent in direct practice. A consideration of family preservation philosophy and strategic family therapy was proposed. In describing these two schemas separately, their synthesis was eventually formulated and supported. The larger history of ideas that emerged yielded an epistemological discrepancy between models of practice in the field of family therapy. These discrepancies were further exaggerated by issues of policy, funding, …
How Palliative Care Professionals In Multicultural Or Monocultural Dyads Incorporate Humor In Their Work, Susan M. Lutzke-Hoff
How Palliative Care Professionals In Multicultural Or Monocultural Dyads Incorporate Humor In Their Work, Susan M. Lutzke-Hoff
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Some religions/people believe that a persons' core being, or spirit will cease to be at death, some believe in reincarnation, and others believe in eternal life. With the seriousness of one's spirit ending, transforming, or transitioning from this life to another, some believe it is a most solemn and serious time, where there is no room for humor. Others believe there are no boundaries to contain humor. It is part of life and death. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore how palliative care professionals in multicultural or monocultural dyads incorporated humor in their work. The narratives in …
Sorry Is Harder To Say When You Mean It : Clinicians' Perceptions Of Working With Juvenile Sexual Offenders On Taking Responsibility For Their Offenses, Sheri E. Kurtz
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative empirical study explores the perceptions of clinicians helping juvenile sexual offenders take responsibility for their offenses and how it enhances treatment outcomes. Twelve clinicians from a single, residential treatment program for male juvenile sexual offenders, ages 5-20, located in Northeastern United States, were interviewed and asked a series of questions about how they work with juvenile sexual offenders to take responsibility for the sexual offenses. Interview questions addressed a variety of issues relating to taking responsibility, including the influence of developmental and trauma histories, the disclosure process in different settings such as individual, group and family therapy, assessing …

Promoting Fathers' Engagement With Children: Preventive Interventions For Low-Income Families, Philip A. Cowan, Carolyn Pape Cowan, Marsha Kline Pruett, Kyle Pruett, Jessie J. Wong
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
Few programs to enhance fathers' engagement with children have been systematically evaluated, especially for low-income minority populations. In this study, 289 couples from primarily low-income Mexican American and European American families were randomly assigned to one of three conditions and followed for 18 months: 16-week groups for fathers, 16-week groups for couples, or a 1-time informational meeting. Compared with families in the low-dose comparison condition, intervention families showed positive effects on fathers' engagement with their children, couple relationship quality, and children's problem behaviors. Participants in couples' groups showed more consistent, longer term positive effects than those in fathers-only groups. Intervention …

Excessive Acquisition In Hoarding, Randy O. Frost, David F. Tolin, Gail Steketee, Kristin E. Fitch, Alexandra Selbo-Bruns
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Compulsive hoarding (the acquisition of and failure to discard large numbers of possessions) is associated with substantial health risk, impairment, and economic burden. However, little research has examined separate components of this definition, particularly excessive acquisition. The present study examined acquisition in hoarding. Participants, 878 self-identified with hoarding and 665 family informants (not matched to hoarding participants), completed an Internet survey. Among hoarding participants who met criteria for clinically significant hoarding, 61% met criteria for a diagnosis of compulsive buying and approximately 85% reported excessive acquisition. Family informants indicated that nearly 95% exhibited excessive acquisition. Those who acquired excessively had …
School Experiences Of Foster Children As Seen Through The Eyes Of Teachers, Lynda Bonneau
School Experiences Of Foster Children As Seen Through The Eyes Of Teachers, Lynda Bonneau
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored the school experiences of foster children by asking their teachers how they perceive them academically, socially and behaviorally. Foster children, who have generally experienced adverse life circumstances, are prone to have academic and behavioral trouble in school; many drop out before completing high school. This research focused on assessing how teachers cope with the unique challenges these students present, their suggestions for how they could be supported in school, and recommendations in terms of teacher training for working with this group. Eight public school teachers of foster children from two urban schools in Rhode Island were …

Consumerism And The Transition To Motherhood : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah Burnett Muzzy
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This flexible method study was undertaken to explore the role of consumerism in facilitating women's transition to motherhood. It was informed by 12 women who were expecting their first child and in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Participants were volunteers from the Boston area who agreed to be interviewed about their experience of the transition to motherhood. The results indicate that women felt acquiring items for use with their babies served several functions. Specifically, women reported an increased sense of realness regarding the impending birth; feeling more prepared in advance of the baby's arrival; a sense of relief …

"I Feel Fat" : How Do Therapists Help Recovering Female Anorectic Clients Overcome Body Image Issues?, Holly G. Light
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to explore how therapists help their adult, female anorectic clients (who are post-medical stabilization and have committed to some therapeutic level of treatment and recovery) overcome body image issues related to the pursuit of thinness prescribed by Western culture and the media. Through interviews with ten therapists who had extensive experience working with anorectic women in recovery, this exploratory study examined clinicians' experiences with clients' body image issues and chief complaints, their strategies for treating the body image disturbance in their clients, their perceptions of what factors help someone to fully recover and what the most …
Engaging The Hard To Engage : An Examination Of Sanctioned Tanf Clients' Perceptions Of The Re-Engagement Process : A Project Done In Collaboration With The Contra Costa County Employment And Human Services Department., Sena M. Perrier-Morris
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This mixed methods study examined the experiences and perceptions of welfare recipients who were referred to Contra Costa County's sanctioned client outreach program. Contra Costa County assigned social workers ("Client Engagement Specialists") to provide intensive outreach to this client population that was often regarded as difficult to engage in required employment activities and services. The objective was to better understand how welfare recipients viewed the attempt to re-engage them and what county-offered services they regarded as most helpful to them and their families. The study consisted of a sample of 19 respondents drawn from a larger sample pool of 149 …
Sugar And Spice : The Hidden World Of Pre-Adolescent Female Aggression, Sarah Crofton Winsor
Sugar And Spice : The Hidden World Of Pre-Adolescent Female Aggression, Sarah Crofton Winsor
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis proposes that relational theory offers an appropriate and effective framework for both prevention and intervention in situations of covert bullying behavior among pre-adolescent females. After a review of recent literature about the phenomenon of pre-adolescent female bullying, the thesis describes the relational theory advocated by feminist psychology professionals in the last thirty years as an alternative understanding of female social and emotional development that contrasts with the previously dominant male-based paradigm. Following the suggestions of relational theorists, the thesis proposes a new understanding of the specific covert bullying behaviors of young girls that is based on insights into …

Do The Pikler And Rie Methods Promote Infant-Parent Attachment?, Mary Triulzi
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis explores Pikler and Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) methods of parenting enhancement and intervention in an attempt to discover whether they promote attachment in the first three years of a child's life. I report on the Pikler and RIE literature, as well as past and current attachment theory and research. I begin with the work of Bowlby, Ainsworth, and Main and progress to the study of neurobiological, genealogy, adult attachment styles, coping and resiliency, and internal mental states. In the 1946, post-WWII, Emmi Pikler created an orphanage in Budapest, Hungary, The Pikler Institute, beginning a unique approach to …
Discourses For Social Justice Education: The Web Of Racism And The Web Of Resistance, Lisa Werkmeister Rozas, Joshua Miller
Discourses For Social Justice Education: The Web Of Racism And The Web Of Resistance, Lisa Werkmeister Rozas, Joshua Miller
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
This article presents two conceptual frames to help with teaching about issues of race and racism. First the concept of the web of racism describes a matrix that helps students understand the depth of damage racism has instilled in contemporary U.S. society. Second, the web of resistance offers a model of anti-racist activities to help students participate in the fight to end systemic racism. The importance of placing racism in a historical context is emphasized as are the differential reactions of white students and students of color to this material.

Compulsive Hoarding In Children: Six Case Studies, Edward H. Plimpton, Randy O. Frost, Brianna C. Abbey, Whitney Dorer
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the parents of six children who showed signs of compulsive hoarding. The cases revealed a wide variety of hoarding behaviors. Hoarding manifested in difficulties in discarding and maintaining control over possessions. Few cases had problems with clutter or excessive acquisition. In three cases hoarding was episodic and stress-related. Most of the cases showed overlapping ADHD symptoms and a majority demonstrated problems with perfectionism. Only two had clear obsessive-compulsive disorder, although concerns about others touching or moving possessions, which was present in all of the cases, may represent a form of ordering and arranging compulsions. None …
From Swarms To Summer Camps : A Theoretical Deconstruction Of Cohesion Among Groups Of Latency Aged Boys, Prairie Youn-Yuen Chiu
From Swarms To Summer Camps : A Theoretical Deconstruction Of Cohesion Among Groups Of Latency Aged Boys, Prairie Youn-Yuen Chiu
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis is an interdisciplinary theoretical deconstruction of cohesion among groups of latency aged boys. Process research on the development of cohesion among informally organized groups of latency aged boys is lacking. Also, much of cohesion research is adult-oriented, rather than child-oriented. This project seeks to elucidate some of the hows of cohesion among this population by applying a biological theory examining cohesion among aggregates of animals to a social psychological theory considering cohesion among latency aged boys. It is the author's hope that such an approach will yield valuable insights into the mechanisms of cohesion and its facilitation, while …
Aesthetic Journeys, Johanna Brewer, Scott Mainwaring, Paul Dourish
Aesthetic Journeys, Johanna Brewer, Scott Mainwaring, Paul Dourish
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Researchers and designers are increasingly creating technologies intended to support urban mobility. However, the question of what mobility is remains largely under-examined. In this paper we will use the notion of aesthetic journeys to reconsider the relationship between urban spaces, people and technologies. Fieldwork on the Orange County bus system and in the London Underground leads to a discussion of how we might begin to design for multiple mobilities.
"Enough About You, Let's Talk About Me : Clinicians' Use Of Self-Disclosure And (Un)Conscious Awareness Of Race, Sexuality, And Gender, Sarah R. Barnett-Parker
"Enough About You, Let's Talk About Me : Clinicians' Use Of Self-Disclosure And (Un)Conscious Awareness Of Race, Sexuality, And Gender, Sarah R. Barnett-Parker
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: How and why do clinicians choose to self-disclose (with particular attention paid to race, sexual orientation and gender)? In order to answer this questiono sixty-four participants were surveyed using a mixed-method, deductive, exploratory method. The majority of clinicians surveyed use self-disclosure in their practices and believe that it is a viable therapeutic technique. Not all of the clinicians were aware of their own social identities or the identities of their clients playing a role in their choices around self-disclosure, but some were. The three major motivations for identity-based disclosures …
Dissonance, Development And Doing The Right Thing : A Theoretical Exploration Of Altruistic Action As An Adaptive Intervention, Christopher L. Woodman
Dissonance, Development And Doing The Right Thing : A Theoretical Exploration Of Altruistic Action As An Adaptive Intervention, Christopher L. Woodman
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical exploration was undertaken to give consideration to the phenomenon of altruistic action as a potential focus for therapeutic intervention strategies. The very nature of altruism carries with it a fundamentally paradoxical and discrepant conundrum because of the opposing forces that it activates within us; inclinations to put the welfare of others ahead of self-interest are not experienced by the inner self as sound survival planning, though this has historically been a point of contention. Internal and external discrepancies cause psychological dissonance and inner conflict between self-protective strategies and core value constructs, the reconciliation of which is a driving …

The Strength Of Muslim American Couples In The Face Of Heightened Discrimination From September 11th And The Iraq War, Brianne Goodman, Brianne Goodman Carter, Brianne Goodman Carter
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study examined how Muslim American couples are psychologically and relationally impacted by heightened discrimination in the wake of September 11th and The Iraq War. Utilizing interviews with six Muslim American couples who have been married for at least six years (through September 11th and The Iraq War), the study identified that religious discrimination against Muslim Americans is experienced as pervasive and endemic—existing at multiple levels: attitudinal, interpersonal, structural, institutional, and systemic. The study found that in response to (rather than in spite of) religious discrimination, Muslim American couples exhibit increased resiliency and strength through the tenets of their …
Clinician Gender As A Factor Of Countertransference In The Treatment Of Clients Diagnosed With Borderline Personality Disorder, Alyssa Jayne Wyman
Clinician Gender As A Factor Of Countertransference In The Treatment Of Clients Diagnosed With Borderline Personality Disorder, Alyssa Jayne Wyman
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explores the interplay between clinician gender and experiences of countertransference (CT) in treatment of clients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The central hypothesis of this study is that constructions of gender will influence experiences of CT in the treatment of BPD clients, therefore having a meaningful effect on the therapeutic relationship and clinical treatment. Utilizing twelve qualitative individual interviews with clinicians who have treated clients diagnosed with BPD, this study examined clinicians' perceptions of treatment, including experiences and management of psychodynamic phenomena. The study also explored clinicians' use of different theoretical and treatment models, their views …
The Impostor Phenomenon : An Exploratory Study Of The Socializing Factors That Contribute To Feelings Of Fraudulence Among High Achieving, Diverse Female Undergraduates, Sara E. Wiener
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This two phase study explored what socializing factors contribute to feelings of fraudulence among high achieving, diverse female undergraduates aged 18-22. By means of a questionnaire and the Clance IP Scale, Phase I of the study captured demographic information of participants who self identified as feeling like a fake or fraud in academia and the degree to which their fraudulent feelings affect their lives. During Phase II, 10 participants whose scores on the Scale were 61 and above were interviewed to collect qualitative data pertaining to each participant's social and academic history and their perspectives on what factors contribute to …
"If I Told You What Was Going To Happen, You Wouldn't Do It" : The Breast Cancer Survivor's Experience Of Chemotherapy, Amy Tindall Willson
"If I Told You What Was Going To Happen, You Wouldn't Do It" : The Breast Cancer Survivor's Experience Of Chemotherapy, Amy Tindall Willson
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Chemotherapy is a concept that strikes a chord inside many people, conjuring images of nausea, hair loss, and pain. It is synonymous with cancer. The impact of undergoing treatment for a life-threatening diagnosis like cancer can have both seen and unseen impacts on the person, their families, and their loved ones. The effects can reverberate through a person's life, affecting not only their health status, but also their relationships, careers, sense of self, worldview, and spirituality. This study looks more closely at the experiences of women who have undergone chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer and considers the full …
The Relationship Between Job Satisfaction And Program Traits For Wilderness Therapists Employed At Outdoor Behaviorial Healthcare Treatment Programs, Lisa Winn
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was carried out in order to determine the relationship between job satisfaction and program traits for wilderness therapists employed at Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare (OBH) treatment programs. It was hypothesized that wilderness therapists who work at base camp or in both base camp and expedition type wilderness therapy programs will report higher levels of Job Satisfaction on the Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) because their work days are more flexible. Secondly, wilderness therapists who work in expedition type wilderness therapy programs will report lower levels of Job Satisfaction on the JSS because they work under more rigorous conditions. A quantitative …
Bread And Roses : Clinical Social Work With Clients Living In Poverty, Katherine Jane Waggoner
Bread And Roses : Clinical Social Work With Clients Living In Poverty, Katherine Jane Waggoner
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to explore the possible relationship between future clinical social workers' beliefs about the causes of poverty and their commitment to working with individuals living in poverty. The study was an attempt to respond to concerns that have been raised about a perceived abandonment of the poor by social workers in favor of private mental health practice with middle and upper class clients. One-hundred and two students currently enrolled in the Masters program of the Smith College School for Social Work responded to a questionnaire designed to assess their preferred practice modality, perceptions of the causes of …
