Religion, Spirituality And Clinical Practice : An Exploration Of Practical Applications, Julia E. Gallichio

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to elicit clinicians' perspectives and practices with religion and spirituality in clinical practice. Recent social work researchers note the roots of social work in spirituality and believe it can reinvigorate social work practice. Four focus groups were conducted in three different geographical locations with clinicians who included social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists. It was found that the clinicians believed that including spirituality in practice benefits the client either in secular or sectarian ways. The application of spiritual practices varied widely. The majority of participants in this study reported the use of mindfulness and meditation …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study examined the relationship between racial and sexual orientation identity development among Black gay men. Preliminary research implied that the relationship between these two processes was complex though there was little research that explored it. Fifty-seven Black gay men participated in an anonymous online survey which asked a range of questions about racial and sexual orientation identity as well as the experience of being both Black and gay. Findings indicated that Black gay men experience more internalized homophobia and racism than individuals who are Black or gay but not both. The results also implied that the two developmental processes …

An Overseas Example Of "Lighter Is Better" : The Implications Of Colorism Among Male Sex Workers In Thailand, Eugene Espejo Canotal

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Throughout history, the idea that lighter skin is better than darker skin has been found in many countries and societies. People with light skin were associated with being wealthy enough to remain indoors while people with dark skin were assumed to have attained that skin tone from working outdoors and being exposed to the sun. Colorism is a form of skin color stratification in which light-skinned people are privileged over darkskinned people, in terms of: access to education, work opportunities, and being perceived as attractive and possessing positive personality traits. European colonialism and slavery reinforced that not only having white …

Juvenile Sex Offenders' Therapeutic Alliance : The Intricate Dynamics Of Alliance In Relation To Attachment, Trauma, And Religion, Rian Michelle Bovard-Johns Aug 2009

Juvenile Sex Offenders' Therapeutic Alliance : The Intricate Dynamics Of Alliance In Relation To Attachment, Trauma, And Religion, Rian Michelle Bovard-Johns

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Therapeutic alliance is the most influential predictor of successful treatment with trans-theoretical capacity. Alliance is directly influenced by client variables which are unique to clinical context. Initial research has evidenced the effectiveness of alliance with adult sex offenders and delinquent youth. The present study extends research, incorporating variables unique to juvenile sex offenders in corrections facilities. Predominant client variables of trauma symptoms and attachment patterns are measured for 332 adjudicated male sex offenders' alliance with staff. The results reveal a significant relationship (F =8.7, DF =171, p <.000) between youths' attachment to peers and communication with fathers that positively predicts alliance and that anxiety based on trauma negatively predicts alliance. Implications future research and treatment are provided.

Inextricably Intertwined : Identity Development In Adults With A Disabled Sibling, Sarah M. Rigney Aug 2009

Inextricably Intertwined : Identity Development In Adults With A Disabled Sibling, Sarah M. Rigney

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study sought to answer the question "What is the long-term impact on the identity formation of adults who grew up with a disabled sibling?" The bulk of literature exploring the impact of a sibling's disability on his/her non-disabled sibling focuses primarily on children. With so few studies asking non-disabled adult siblings about their experience, however, the research examining this unique relationship lacks depth and scope. In exploring this relationship through an adult lens, there were two primary hypotheses: 1) non-disabled siblings would report having an experience that was rich with both rewards and challenges, and 2) this relationship would …

What Is The Efficacy Of Evidence-Based Practice In Mental Health Treatment Of Diverse Ethnic Minorities?, Claire Denise Villegas Aug 2009

What Is The Efficacy Of Evidence-Based Practice In Mental Health Treatment Of Diverse Ethnic Minorities?, Claire Denise Villegas

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This mixed-method exploratory study attempted to examine the efficacy of evidence-based practice (EBP) in mental health treatment of diverse ethnic minorities. The study utilized an online survey consisting of demographic, multiple-choice and narrative questions. Twenty-one clinicians who utilized EBP interventions in their clinical practice completed this survey. The current EBP research lacks equal representation of ethnic minorities in the study populations. EBPs are increasingly mandated through agency policy and legislation (Carter, 2008). While broad claims are sometimes made that such interventions will "work" for everyone, it is noteworthy that diverse ethnic minorities are often not included in much of the …

Resilient Traits Of Children Raised By A Parent With Borderline Personality Disorder, Meghan Andrea Albrecht Aug 2009

Resilient Traits Of Children Raised By A Parent With Borderline Personality Disorder, Meghan Andrea Albrecht

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison Aug 2009

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Language in the mental health field is rich with powerful metaphors, hyperbolic phrases, and linguistic symbols of historical, political and social meaning. At a closer look, a dominant discourse rooted deep in the grounds of empirical science is revealed. In this theoretical study, mental health language is deconstructed using Critical Discourse Analysis and other related theories to locate and analyze a dominant discourse, which opens space for a non-dominant discourse. Postmodern theory assumes that power, entangled with and interdependent on powerlessness, is an absolute phenomenon, and that power abuse can be revealed through the study of a discourse itself. The …
