A Typology For Understanding The Role Of Information As A Source Of Value Creation In The Emerging Information Economy, J. Mcintosh, Keng Siau Aug 1998

A Typology For Understanding The Role Of Information As A Source Of Value Creation In The Emerging Information Economy, J. Mcintosh, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today’s economy is increasingly driven by the integration of information in many aspects of business. Greater information intensity in industries such as hospital supply and express package delivery is causing a fundamental transformation in the way firms conduct business, the menu of competitive choices that they are faced with, and the need to continuously keep ahead of competitors. Information driven businesses appear to adopt several competitive or operating innovations. These include: mass customization or the creation of customized products which offer virtually individualized products to customers in mass markets (Pine, 1993); disintermediation or the creation of direct links between producers …

Managing Creativity In Organizations: A Total System Approach, Gilbert Tan Mar 1998

Managing Creativity In Organizations: A Total System Approach, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizations need creativity to adapt to the fast-changing environment and revitalize itself. In response to this need, managers have invested in various single approaches, such as, creativity training programmes, team-building, and leadership development to improve creativity. This paper argues that managing creativity in organization is a complex problem and thus requires a more integrated approach. In this paper, I have provided a theoretical framework to explain how managers can foster and sustain creativity in their organizations using a total systems approach. In the framework, I depict the organization as having four subsystems, namely, culture, techno-structural subsystems, management and people. Each …

Telling Tales: Management Gurus' Narratives And The Construction Of Managerial Identity, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman Mar 1998

Telling Tales: Management Gurus' Narratives And The Construction Of Managerial Identity, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the reasons for the apparently powerful impact of management gurus' ideas (i.e. guru theory) on senior managers. An examination of the limited literature on management gurus and other related literatures suggests three explanations for the appeal of guru theory for senior managers. The first set of explanations relates to various features of management work which may heighten managers' receptivity to guru ideas. The second set focuses on the gurus themselves and emphasizes the form in which they are presented (i.e. public performances). The final set of explanations highlights the importance of the socioeconomic and cultural context within …

Exceptions And Exception Handling In Computerized Information Processes, Diane M. Strong, Steven M. Miller Apr 1995

Exceptions And Exception Handling In Computerized Information Processes, Diane M. Strong, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Exceptions, situations that cannot be correctly processed by computer systems, occur frequently in computer-based information processes. Five perspectives on exceptions provide insights into why exceptions occur and how they might be eliminated or more efficiently handled. We investigate these perspectives using an in-depth study of an operating information process that has frequent exceptions. Our results support the use of a total quality management (TQM) approach of eliminating exceptions for some exceptions, in particular, those caused by computer systems that are poor matches to organizational processes. However, some exceptions are explained better by a political system perspective of conflicting goals between …

Repository Evaluation Of Software Reuse: An Empirical Study, R. D. Banker, Robert J. Kauffman, D. Zweig Jan 1993

Repository Evaluation Of Software Reuse: An Empirical Study, R. D. Banker, Robert J. Kauffman, D. Zweig

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The use and benefits of repository evaluation of software reuse are illustrated through an analysis of the evolving repositories of two large firms that recently implemented integrated CASE development tools. The analysis shows that these tools have supported high levels of software reuse, but it also suggests that there remains considerable unexploited reuse potential. The findings indicate that organizational changes will be required before the full potential of the new technology can be realized.

Interpreting And Responding To Strategic Issues: The Impact Of National Culture, Susan C. Schneider, Arnoud De Meyer May 1991

Interpreting And Responding To Strategic Issues: The Impact Of National Culture, Susan C. Schneider, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Perceptions of environmental uncertainty and organizational control influence strategic behavior. As national culture influences these perceptions we expect to find cultural differences in interpretation and response to strategic issues. Given a case describing an issue concerning deregulation of the U.S. banking industry, managers completed questionnaires rating interpretations and responses to that issue. National culture was found to influence interpretation and responses. In particular, Latin European managers when compared with other managers were more likely to interpret the issue as a crisis and as a threat. Latin Europeans were also more likely to recommend proactive behavior. This study indicates that different …

European Manufacturers: The Dangers Of Complacency, Kasra Ferdows, Arnoud De Meyer Sep 1988

European Manufacturers: The Dangers Of Complacency, Kasra Ferdows, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recent trends in the activities of a sample of European manufacturers are analysed in this paper. The data have been collected through annual surveys in the last five years, and in particular, the results of the 1987 survey (222 responses received in the first trimester of 1987) have been analysed in more depth. The priorities set for the development of varions types of capabilities in manufacturing (related to quality, delivery, flexibility, cost, etc.), and the specific programmes under implementation for improvement of manufacturing performance which are receiving highest attention are described. Through correlation analyses, statisically significant associations between specific improvement …
