Rethinking Acting In Concert: Activist Esg Stewardship Is Shareholder Democracy, Dan W. Puchniak, Umakanth Varottil Sep 2023

Rethinking Acting In Concert: Activist Esg Stewardship Is Shareholder Democracy, Dan W. Puchniak, Umakanth Varottil

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In May 2021, Engine No. 1, an investment fund, was lauded by the responsible investment community for successfully placing three dissident independent directors on ExxonMobil’s board. It achieved this by being a catalyst for institutional investors to become backers of environmental shareholder activism. The unprecedented success of Engine No. 1’s campaign has spurred calls for a new, more sustained, activist engagement model by institutional investors, now known as “activist stewardship”.However, there is a significant legal hurdle that has been almost entirely overlooked by those calling for this new approach for institutional investors to become activist stewards: acting in concert rules. …

Knowledge Representation For Conceptual, Motivational, And Affective Processes In Natural Language Communication, Seng Beng Ho, Zhaoxia Wang, Boon-Kiat Quek, Erik Cambria Aug 2023

Knowledge Representation For Conceptual, Motivational, And Affective Processes In Natural Language Communication, Seng Beng Ho, Zhaoxia Wang, Boon-Kiat Quek, Erik Cambria

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Natural language communication is an intricate and complex process. The speaker usually begins with an intention and motivation of what is to be communicated, and what outcomes are expected from the communication, while taking into consideration the listener’s mental model to concoct an appropriate sentence. Likewise, the listener has to interpret the speaker’s message, and respond accordingly, also with the speaker’s mental model in mind. Doing this successfully entails the appropriate representation of the conceptual, motivational, and affective processes that underlie language generation and understanding. Whereas big-data approaches in language processing (such as chatbots and machine translation) have performed well, …

Decoding The Underlying Meaning Of Multimodal Hateful Memes, Ming Shan Hee, Wen Haw Chong, Roy Ka-Wei Lee Aug 2023

Decoding The Underlying Meaning Of Multimodal Hateful Memes, Ming Shan Hee, Wen Haw Chong, Roy Ka-Wei Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent studies have proposed models that yielded promising performance for the hateful meme classification task. Nevertheless, these proposed models do not generate interpretable explanations that uncover the underlying meaning and support the classification output. A major reason for the lack of explainable hateful meme methods is the absence of a hateful meme dataset that contains ground truth explanations for benchmarking or training. Intuitively, having such explanations can educate and assist content moderators in interpreting and removing flagged hateful memes. This paper address this research gap by introducing Hateful meme with Reasons Dataset (HatReD), which is a new multimodal hateful meme …

Hyperbolic Graph Topic Modeling Network With Continuously Updated Topic Tree, Ce Zhang, Rex Ying, Hady Wirawan Lauw Aug 2023

Hyperbolic Graph Topic Modeling Network With Continuously Updated Topic Tree, Ce Zhang, Rex Ying, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Connectivity across documents often exhibits a hierarchical network structure. Hyperbolic Graph Neural Networks (HGNNs) have shown promise in preserving network hierarchy. However, they do not model the notion of topics, thus document representations lack semantic interpretability. On the other hand, a corpus of documents usually has high variability in degrees of topic specificity. For example, some documents contain general content (e.g., sports), while others focus on specific themes (e.g., basketball and swimming). Topic models indeed model latent topics for semantic interpretability, but most assume a flat topic structure and ignore such semantic hierarchy. Given these two challenges, we propose a …

Corporate Trade War Uncertainty And Patent Bubble, Xu Yang, Nan Hu, Peng Liang Aug 2023

Corporate Trade War Uncertainty And Patent Bubble, Xu Yang, Nan Hu, Peng Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper draws upon resource dependence theory and investigates how trade policy uncertainty affects firm strategic innovation management in China. Adopting a machine learning approach called Word2Vec from computational linguistics, we construct and validate a measure of firm-level managers’ perceived trade war uncertainty (TWU). We find that TWU has a positive effect on the number of total patent applications, but this positive effect is totally driven by low-quality patents instead of high-quality patents. Moreover, we document that firms have stronger incentives for such strategic innovation behavior when the underlying firms are more financially constrained, and/or when the management is more …

More Voices Persuade: The Attentional Benefits Of Voice Numerosity, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee, Amitava Chattopadhyay Aug 2023

More Voices Persuade: The Attentional Benefits Of Voice Numerosity, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee, Amitava Chattopadhyay

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors posit that in an initial exposure to a broadcast video, hearing different voices narrate (in succession) a persuasive message encourages consumers’ attention and processing of the message, thereby facilitating persuasion; this is referred to as “the voice numerosity effect.” Across four studies (plus validation and replication studies)—including two large-scale, real-world datasets (with more than 11,000 crowdfunding videos and over 3.6 million customer transactions, and more than 1,600 video ads) and two controlled experiments (with over 1,800 participants)—the results provide support for the hypothesized effect. The effect (1) has consequential, economic implications in a real-world marketplace, (2) is more …

Data Is The New Gold: A Singapore Perspective On The Duty Of Care Concerning A Dataset’S Role In Contributing To Bias And Ai Hallucinations, Daniel Seah Aug 2023

Data Is The New Gold: A Singapore Perspective On The Duty Of Care Concerning A Dataset’S Role In Contributing To Bias And Ai Hallucinations, Daniel Seah

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Amidst the trends and advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, the dataset’s key role in creating AI harms is a constant. Yet the literature’s attention is typically focussed on the machinelearning’s role, from which the dataset’s role is examined usually in terms of its potential for bias. Datasets also contribute to AI hallucinations. Again, the literature focuses on the composite roles of datasets and AI models in hallucinations, in isolation from a dataset’s contributory role in creating bias. Therefore, the overlapping and distinctive roles of datasets, as a dual contributor, are understudied in the literature. Through the legal concept of …

Numgpt: Improving Numeracy Ability Of Generative Pre-Trained Models, Zhihua Jin, Xin Jiang, Xiangbo Wang, Qun Liu, Yong Wang, Xiaozhe Ren, Huamin Qu Aug 2023

Numgpt: Improving Numeracy Ability Of Generative Pre-Trained Models, Zhihua Jin, Xin Jiang, Xiangbo Wang, Qun Liu, Yong Wang, Xiaozhe Ren, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing generative pre-trained language models (e.g., GPT) focus on modeling the language structure and semantics of general texts. However, those models do not consider the numerical properties of numbers and cannot perform robustly on numerical reasoning tasks (e.g., math word problems and measurement estimation). In this paper, we propose NumGPT, a generative pre-trained model that explicitly models the numerical properties of numbers in texts. Specifically, it leverages a prototype-based numeral embedding to encode the mantissa of the number and an individual embedding to encode the exponent of the number. A numeral-aware loss function is designed to integrate numerals into the …

Transferable Curricula Through Difficulty Conditioned Generators, Sidney Tio, Pradeep Varakantham Aug 2023

Transferable Curricula Through Difficulty Conditioned Generators, Sidney Tio, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Advancements in reinforcement learning (RL) have demonstrated superhuman performance in complex tasks such as Starcraft, Go, Chess etc. However, knowledge transfer from Artificial "Experts" to humans remain a significant challenge. A promising avenue for such transfer would be the use of curricula. Recent methods in curricula generation focuses on training RL agents efficiently, yet such methods rely on surrogate measures to track student progress, and are not suited for training robots in the real world (or more ambitiously humans). In this paper, we introduce a method named Parameterized Environment Response Model (PERM) that shows promising results in training RL agents …

Ai For Connectivism Learning: Undergraduate Students’ Experiences Of Chatgpt In Advanced Programming Courses, Swapna Gottipati, Kyong Jin Shim, Venky Shankararaman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Advanced programming skills are required for computing courses on merging topics, and students often struggle to develop these skills to solve complex problems. To address this challenge, faculty members provide additional lectures, practice sessions, and educational technology tools. This paper discusses the challenges faced by computer science students in developing advanced programming skills and explores the use of AI chatbots, specifically ChatGPT, as a support tool for learning. We study the engagement and effectiveness of ChatGPT in helping students learn advanced programming skills using two engagement learning frameworks (CIE and MELT) for evaluation. The study involves designing a computing lab …

Context-Aware Event Forecasting Via Graph Disentanglement, Yunshan Ma, Chenchen Ye, Zijian Wu, Xiang Wang, Yixin Cao, Tat-Seng Chua Aug 2023

Context-Aware Event Forecasting Via Graph Disentanglement, Yunshan Ma, Chenchen Ye, Zijian Wu, Xiang Wang, Yixin Cao, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event forecasting has been a demanding and challenging task throughout the entire human history. It plays a pivotal role in crisis alarming and disaster prevention in various aspects of the whole society. The task of event forecasting aims to model the relational and temporal patterns based on historical events and makes forecasting to what will happen in the future. Most existing studies on event forecasting formulate it as a problem of link prediction on temporal event graphs. However, such pure structured formulation suffers from two main limitations: 1) most events fall into general and high-level types in the event ontology, …

Mastering Stock Markets With Efficient Mixture Of Diversified Trading Experts, Shuo Sun, Xinrun Wang, Wanqi Xue, Xiaoxuan Lou, Bo An Aug 2023

Mastering Stock Markets With Efficient Mixture Of Diversified Trading Experts, Shuo Sun, Xinrun Wang, Wanqi Xue, Xiaoxuan Lou, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Quantitative stock investment is a fundamental financial task that highly relies on accurate prediction of market status and profitable investment decision making. Despite recent advances in deep learning (DL) have shown stellar performance on capturing trading opportunities in the stochastic stock market, the performance of existing DL methods is unstable with sensitivity to network initialization and hyperparameter selection. One major limitation of existing works is that investment decisions are made based on one individual neural network predictor with high uncertainty, which is inconsistent with the workflow in real-world trading firms. To tackle this limitation, we propose AlphaMix, a novel three-stage …

Learning To Ask Clarification Questions With Spatial Reasoning, Yang Deng, Shuaiyi Li, Wai Lam Jul 2023

Learning To Ask Clarification Questions With Spatial Reasoning, Yang Deng, Shuaiyi Li, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Asking clarifying questions has become a key element of various conversational systems, allowing for an effective resolution of ambiguity and uncertainty through natural language questions. Despite the extensive applications of spatial information grounded dialogues, it remains an understudied area on learning to ask clarification questions with the capability of spatial reasoning. In this work, we propose a novel method, named SpatialCQ, for this problem. Specifically, we first align the representation space between textual and spatial information by encoding spatial states with textual descriptions. Then a multi-relational graph is constructed to capture the spatial relations and enable spatial reasoning with relational …

Multiracial Identity Integration: Components, Antecedents, And Consequences, Sheila Xi Rui Wee Jul 2023

Multiracial Identity Integration: Components, Antecedents, And Consequences, Sheila Xi Rui Wee

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Existing research on multiracials has examined how multiracials develop different racial identities. However, empirical research on how multiracial manage and integrate their identities as well as its impact are limited. This dissertation examined key antecedents and consequences associated with the unique process that multiracials undergo to achieve a positive identity via Multiracial Identity Integration (MII). In Study 1, we examined the link between MII, psychological well-being, and cognitive capacity. Results revealed a positive association between MII and psychological well-being as well as some cognitive capacity outcomes. Study 2 replicated the same relationship between MII and psychological well-being/cognitive capacity outcomes. Additionally, …

Do-Good: Towards Distribution Shift Evaluation For Pre-Trained Visual Document Understanding Models, Jiabang He, Yi Hu, Lei Wang, Xing Xu, Ning Liu, Hui Liu Jul 2023

Do-Good: Towards Distribution Shift Evaluation For Pre-Trained Visual Document Understanding Models, Jiabang He, Yi Hu, Lei Wang, Xing Xu, Ning Liu, Hui Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Numerous pre-training techniques for visual document understanding (VDU) have recently shown substantial improvements in performance across a wide range of document tasks. However, these pre-trained VDU models cannot guarantee continued success when the distribution of test data differs from the distribution of training data. In this paper, to investigate how robust existing pre-trained VDU models are to various distribution shifts, we first develop an out-of-distribution (OOD) benchmark termed Do-GOOD for the fine-Grained analysis on Document image-related tasks specifically. The Do-GOOD benchmark defines the underlying mechanisms that result in different distribution shifts and contains 9 OOD datasets covering 3 VDU related …

Few-Shot Event Detection: An Empirical Study And A Unified View, Yubo Ma, Zehao Wang, Yixin Cao, Aixin Sun Jul 2023

Few-Shot Event Detection: An Empirical Study And A Unified View, Yubo Ma, Zehao Wang, Yixin Cao, Aixin Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Few-shot event detection (ED) has been widely studied, while this brings noticeable discrepancies, e.g., various motivations, tasks, and experimental settings, that hinder the understanding of models for future progress. This paper presents a thorough empirical study, a unified view of ED models, and a better unified baseline. For fair evaluation, we compare 12 representative methods on three datasets, which are roughly grouped into prompt-based and prototype-based models for detailed analysis. Experiments consistently demonstrate that prompt-based methods, including ChatGPT, still significantly trail prototype-based methods in terms of overall performance. To investigate their superior performance, we break down their design elements along …

Take A Break In The Middle: Investigating Subgoals Towards Hierarhical Script Generation, Xinze Li, Yixin Cao, Muhao Chen, Aixin Sun Jul 2023

Take A Break In The Middle: Investigating Subgoals Towards Hierarhical Script Generation, Xinze Li, Yixin Cao, Muhao Chen, Aixin Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Goal-oriented Script Generation is a new task of generating a list of steps that can fulfill the given goal. In this paper, we propose to extend the task from the perspective of cognitive theory. Instead of a simple flat structure, the steps are typically organized hierarchically — Human often decompose a complex task into subgoals, where each subgoal can be further decomposed into steps. To establish the benchmark, we contribute a new dataset, propose several baseline methods, and set up evaluation metrics. Both automatic and human evaluation verify the high-quality of dataset, as well as the effectiveness of incorporating subgoals …

Cheer: Centrality-Aware High-Order Event Reasoning Network For Document-Level Event Causality Identification, Meiqi Chen, Yixin Cao, Yan Zhang, Zhiwei Liu Jul 2023

Cheer: Centrality-Aware High-Order Event Reasoning Network For Document-Level Event Causality Identification, Meiqi Chen, Yixin Cao, Yan Zhang, Zhiwei Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Document-level Event Causality Identification (DECI) aims to recognize causal relations between events within a document. Recent studies focus on building a document-level graph for cross-sentence reasoning, but ignore important causal structures — there are one or two “central” events that prevail throughout the document, with most other events serving as either their cause or consequence. In this paper, we manually annotate central events for a systematical investigation and propose a novel DECI model, CHEER, which performs high-order reasoning while considering event centrality. First, we summarize a general GNN-based DECI model and provide a unified view for better understanding. Second, we …

Synthesizing Speech Test Cases With Text-To-Speech? An Empirical Study On The False Alarms In Automated Speech Recognition Testing, Julia Kaiwen Lau, Kelvin Kai Wen Kong, Julian Hao Yong, Per Hoong Tan, Zhou Yang, Zi Qian Yong, Joshua Chern Wey Low, Chun Yong Chong, Mei Kuan Lim, David Lo Jul 2023

Synthesizing Speech Test Cases With Text-To-Speech? An Empirical Study On The False Alarms In Automated Speech Recognition Testing, Julia Kaiwen Lau, Kelvin Kai Wen Kong, Julian Hao Yong, Per Hoong Tan, Zhou Yang, Zi Qian Yong, Joshua Chern Wey Low, Chun Yong Chong, Mei Kuan Lim, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent studies have proposed the use of Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems to automatically synthesise speech test cases on a scale and uncover a large number of failures in ASR systems. However, the failures uncovered by synthetic test cases may not reflect the actual performance of an ASR system when it transcribes human audio, which we refer to as false alarms. Given a failed test case synthesised from TTS systems, which consists of TTS-generated audio and the corresponding ground truth text, we feed the human audio stating the same text to an ASR system. If human audio can be correctly transcribed, an …

Impact Of Difficult Negatives On Twitter Crisis Detection, Yuhao Zhang, Siaw Ling Lo, Phyo Yi Win Myint Jul 2023

Impact Of Difficult Negatives On Twitter Crisis Detection, Yuhao Zhang, Siaw Ling Lo, Phyo Yi Win Myint

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Twitter has become an alternative information source during a crisis. However, the short, noisy nature of tweets hinders information extraction. While models trained with standard Twitter crisis datasets accomplished decent performance, it remained a challenge to generalize to unseen crisis events. Thus, we proposed adding “difficult” negative examples during training to improve model generalization for Twitter crisis detection. Although adding random noise is a common practice, the impact of difficult negatives, i.e., negative data semantically similar to true examples, was never examined in NLP. Most of existing research focuses on the classification task, without considering the primary information need of …

A Unified Multi-Task Learning Framework For Multi-Goal Conversational Recommender Systems, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Weiwen Xu, Wenqiang Lei, Tat-Seng Chua, Wai Lam Jul 2023

A Unified Multi-Task Learning Framework For Multi-Goal Conversational Recommender Systems, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Weiwen Xu, Wenqiang Lei, Tat-Seng Chua, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Question generation (QG) aims to automatically generate fluent and relevant questions, where the two most mainstream directions are generating questions from unstructured contextual texts (CQG), such as news articles, and generating questions from structured factoid texts (FQG), such as knowledge graphs or tables. Existing methods for these two tasks mainly face challenges of limited internal structural information as well as scarce background information, while these two tasks can benefit each other for alleviating these issues. For example, when meeting the entity mention “United Kingdom” in CQG, it can be inferred that it is a country in European continent based on …

Peerda: Data Augmentation Via Modeling Peer Relation For Span Identification Tasks, Weiwen Xu, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Wai Lam, Lidong Bing Jul 2023

Peerda: Data Augmentation Via Modeling Peer Relation For Span Identification Tasks, Weiwen Xu, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Wai Lam, Lidong Bing

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Span identification aims at identifying specific text spans from text input and classifying them into pre-defined categories. Different from previous works that merely leverage the Subordinate (SUB) relation (i.e. if a span is an instance of a certain category) to train models, this paper for the first time explores the Peer (PR) relation, which indicates that two spans are instances of the same category and share similar features. Specifically, a novel Peer Data Augmentation (PeerDA) approach is proposed which employs span pairs with the PR relation as the augmentation data for training. PeerDA has two unique advantages: (1) There are …

Theorizing About The Implications Of Multiplexity: An Integrative Typology, Gokhan Ertug, Julia Brennecke, Stefano Tasselli Jul 2023

Theorizing About The Implications Of Multiplexity: An Integrative Typology, Gokhan Ertug, Julia Brennecke, Stefano Tasselli

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Multiplexity, the coexistence of more than one type of relationship between two actors, is a prevalent phenomenon with clear relevance for a wide range of management settings and phenomena. While there is a substantial body of work on multiplexity, the absence of a shared terminology and a typology for the mechanisms and arguments that are used in theorizing about its implications nevertheless hamper its appeal to organizational network scholars and slow its progress. Based on content analysis of 103 studies, we propose “relational harmony,” “task complementarity,” and “relational scope” as three categories to integrate the mechanisms and arguments used in …

Managing The Creative Frontier Of Generative Ai: The Novelty-Usefulness Tradeoff, Anirban. Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang Jul 2023

Managing The Creative Frontier Of Generative Ai: The Novelty-Usefulness Tradeoff, Anirban. Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, drawing inspiration from the human creativity literature, we explore the optimal balance between novelty and usefulness in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. We posit that overemphasizing either aspect can lead to limitations such as hallucinations and memorization. Hallucinations, characterized by AI responses containing random inaccuracies or falsehoods, emerge when models prioritize novelty over usefulness. Memorization, where AI models reproduce content from their training data, results from an excessive focus on usefulness, potentially limiting creativity. To address these challenges, we propose a framework that includes domain-specific analysis, data and transfer learning, user preferences and customization, custom evaluation metrics, …

Plan-And-Solve Prompting: Improving Zero-Shot Chain-Of-Thought Reasoning By Large Language Models, Lei Wang, Wanyu Xu, Yihuai Lan, Zhiqiang Hu, Yunshi Lan, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Ee-Peng Lim Jul 2023

Plan-And-Solve Prompting: Improving Zero-Shot Chain-Of-Thought Reasoning By Large Language Models, Lei Wang, Wanyu Xu, Yihuai Lan, Zhiqiang Hu, Yunshi Lan, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large language models (LLMs) have recently been shown to deliver impressive performance in various NLP tasks. To tackle multi-step reasoning tasks, few-shot chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting includes a few manually crafted step-by-step reasoning demonstrations which enable LLMs to explicitly generate reasoning steps and improve their reasoning task accuracy. To eliminate the manual effort, Zeroshot-CoT concatenates the target problem statement with “Let’s think step by step” as an input prompt to LLMs. Despite the success of Zero-shot-CoT, it still suffers from three pitfalls: calculation errors, missing-step errors, and semantic misunderstanding errors. To address the missing-step errors, we propose Planand-Solve (PS) Prompting. It …

Modularized Zero-Shot Vqa With Pre-Trained Models, Rui Cao, Jing Jiang Jul 2023

Modularized Zero-Shot Vqa With Pre-Trained Models, Rui Cao, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large-scale pre-trained models (PTMs) show great zero-shot capabilities. In this paper, we study how to leverage them for zero-shot visual question answering (VQA).Our approach is motivated by a few observations. First, VQA questions often require multiple steps of reasoning, which is still a capability that most PTMs lack. Second, different steps in VQA reasoning chains require different skills such as object detection and relational reasoning, but a single PTM may not possess all these skills. Third, recent work on zero-shot VQA does not explicitly consider multi-step reasoning chains, which makes them less interpretable compared with a decomposition-based approach. We propose …

Islamic Political Parties And Election Campaigns In Indonesia, Colm A. Fox, Jeremy Menchik Jul 2023

Islamic Political Parties And Election Campaigns In Indonesia, Colm A. Fox, Jeremy Menchik

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Islamist political parties are a structural feature of politics across the Muslim world, raising persisting questions for scholars of democracy. Under what conditions will Islamists moderate to support democracy and pluralism? Under what conditions will they adopt more exclusive behavior? Taking a fresh approach, we focus on electoral competition and the conditions under which Islamic party candidates campaign using either inclusive nationalist appeals or exclusively Islamic appeals. Using a unique data source, we coded the appeals contained on the campaign posters of 572 Islamic party candidates in Indonesia. We found that demographics, urban–rural differences, and the level of government office …

Integration Taxes And Gestural Integration: Access And Limits To Integration Through New Citizens’ Participation In State-Sponsored Grassroots Volunteerism In Singapore, George Wong Jul 2023

Integration Taxes And Gestural Integration: Access And Limits To Integration Through New Citizens’ Participation In State-Sponsored Grassroots Volunteerism In Singapore, George Wong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Integration is a contested topic in Singapore’s public discourse. One such area is integration through state-sponsored grassroots community volunteerism. Little is however known about such experiences of grassroots volunteerism to integration outcomes. This paper addresses the gap by exploring how new citizen and permanent resident grassroots volunteers make sense of their experiences through ‘integration taxes' and ‘gestural integration'. In doing so, this paper argues that while grassroots volunteerism offers lower barriers to entry for new citizens, it constraints the diversity of integration by and through new citizen volunteers due to discrimination, marginalisation and staged integration faced in grassroots work.

Contrastive Video Question Answering Via Video Graph Transformer, Junbin Xiao Xiao, Pan Zhou, Angela Yao, Yicong Li, Richang Hong, Shuicheng Yan, Tat-Seng Chua Jul 2023

Contrastive Video Question Answering Via Video Graph Transformer, Junbin Xiao Xiao, Pan Zhou, Angela Yao, Yicong Li, Richang Hong, Shuicheng Yan, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose to perform video question answering (VideoQA) in a Contrastive manner via a Video Graph Transformer model (CoVGT). CoVGT’s uniqueness and superiority are three-fold: 1) It proposes a dynamic graph transformer module which encodes video by explicitly capturing the visual objects, their relations and dynamics, for complex spatio-temporal reasoning. 2) It designs separate video and text transformers for contrastive learning between the video and text to perform QA, instead of multi-modal transformer for answer classification. Fine-grained video-text communication is done by additional cross-modal interaction modules. 3) It is optimized by the joint fully- and self-supervised contrastive objectives between the …

Discriminative Reasoning With Sparse Event Representation For Document-Level Event-Event Relation Extraction, Changsen Yuan, Heyan Huang, Yixin Cao, Yonggang Wen Jul 2023

Discriminative Reasoning With Sparse Event Representation For Document-Level Event-Event Relation Extraction, Changsen Yuan, Heyan Huang, Yixin Cao, Yonggang Wen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Document-level Event-Event Relation Extraction (DERE) aims to extract relations between events in a document. It challenges conventional sentence-level task (SERE) with difficult long-text understanding. In this paper, we propose a novel DERE model (SENDIR) for better document-level reasoning. Different from existing works that build an event graph via linguistic tools, SENDIR does not require any prior knowledge. The basic idea is to discriminate event pairs in the same sentence or span multiple sentences by assuming their different information density: 1) low density in the document suggests sparse attention to skip irrelevant information. Our module 1 designs various types of attention …
