Extracting Paraphrases Of Technical Terms From Noisy Parallel Software Corpus, Xiaoyin Wang, David Lo, Jing Jiang, Lu Zhang, Hong Mei Aug 2009

Extracting Paraphrases Of Technical Terms From Noisy Parallel Software Corpus, Xiaoyin Wang, David Lo, Jing Jiang, Lu Zhang, Hong Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the problem of extracting technical paraphrases from a parallel software corpus, namely, a collection of duplicate bug reports. Paraphrase acquisition is a fundamental task in the emerging area of text mining for software engineering. Existing paraphrase extraction methods are not entirely suitable here due to the noisy nature of bug reports. We propose a number of techniques to address the noisy data problem. The empirical evaluation shows that our method significantly improves an existing method by upto 58%

Multi-Task Transfer Learning For Weakly-Supervised Relation Extraction, Jing Jiang Aug 2009

Multi-Task Transfer Learning For Weakly-Supervised Relation Extraction, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Creating labeled training data for relation extraction is expensive. In this paper, we study relation extraction in a special weakly-supervised setting when we have only a few seed instances of the target relation type we want to extract but we also have a large amount of labeled instances of other relation types. Observing that different relation types can share certain common structures, we propose to use a multi-task learning method coupled with human guidance to address this weakly-supervised relation extraction problem. The proposed framework models the commonality among different relation types through a shared weight vector, enables knowledge learned from …

Large-Scale Near-Duplicate Web Video Search: Challenge And Opportunity, Wan-Lei Zhao, Song Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo Jul 2009

Large-Scale Near-Duplicate Web Video Search: Challenge And Opportunity, Wan-Lei Zhao, Song Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The massive amount of near-duplicate and duplicate web videos has presented both challenge and opportunity to multimedia computing. On one hand, browsing videos on Internet becomes highly inefficient for the need to repeatedly fast-forward videos of similar content. On the other hand, the tremendous amount of somewhat duplicate content also makes some traditionally difficult vision tasks become simple and easy. For example, annotating pictures can be as simple as recycling the tags of Internet images retrieved from image search engines. Such tasks, of either to eliminate or to recycle near-duplicates, can usually be achieved by the nearest neighbor search of …

Introduction: Can We Bridge The Rigour-Relevance Gap?, Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The following series of articles emanate from a session held at the first Journal of Management Studies Conference on the theme of ‘Beyond knowledge management: advancing the organizational knowledge research agenda’. The conference was concerned to advance academic understanding of this broad topic and in addition to reflect on the role of management scholars as creators, commodifiers and disseminators of management and organizational knowledge. The latter theme arose from debates in relation to the apparent marginality of business school academics in the production of management knowledge (Barley et al., 1988; Gibson and Tesone, 2001; Spell, 2001) and their consequent (in)ability …

Schisms In Humanitarianism: The Khmer Rouge Tribunal's First Hearing, Mahdev Mohan May 2009

Schisms In Humanitarianism: The Khmer Rouge Tribunal's First Hearing, Mahdev Mohan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Mass atrocity invokes humanitarian impulses in all of us. But when a genocidaire casts himself as a victim, the right response is less straightforward. This article analyzes a recent hearing of one of Cambodia's most feared Khmer Rouge cadres who stands trial before a newly established hybrid tribunal and suggests the consequences of responding to war crime trials with polemics rather than principle.

Measurement Equivalence Of Paper-And-Pencil And Internet Organisational Surveys: A Large Scale Examination In 16 Countries, Alain De Beuckelaer, Filip Lievens Apr 2009

Measurement Equivalence Of Paper-And-Pencil And Internet Organisational Surveys: A Large Scale Examination In 16 Countries, Alain De Beuckelaer, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In multinational surveys, mixed-mode administration modes (e.g. combining Internet and paper-and-pencil administration) are increasingly used. To date, no studies have investigated whether measurement equivalence exists between Internet data collection and data collection using the conventional paper-and-pencil method in organisational surveys which include a large number of countries. This paper examined the measurement equivalence of a truly global organisational survey across Internet and paper-and-pencil survey administrations. Data from an organisational survey in 16 countries (N = 52,461) across the globe were used to assess the measurement equivalence of an organisational climate measure within each country in which the survey was administered. …

Visual Word Proximity And Linguistics For Semantic Video Indexing And Near-Duplicate Retrieval, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo Mar 2009

Visual Word Proximity And Linguistics For Semantic Video Indexing And Near-Duplicate Retrieval, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bag-of-visual-words (BoW) has recently become a popular representation to describe video and image content. Most existing approaches, nevertheless, neglect inter-word relatedness and measure similarity by bin-to-bin comparison of visual words in histograms. In this paper, we explore the linguistic and ontological aspects of visual words for video analysis. Two approaches, soft-weighting and constraint-based earth mover’s distance (CEMD), are proposed to model different aspects of visual word linguistics and proximity. In soft-weighting, visual words are cleverly weighted such that the linguistic meaning of words is taken into account for bin-to-bin histogram comparison. In CEMD, a cross-bin matching algorithm is formulated such …

Multiracial Identity Integration: Perceptions Of Conflict And Distance Among Multiracial Individuals, Chi-Ying Cheng, Fiona Lee Mar 2009

Multiracial Identity Integration: Perceptions Of Conflict And Distance Among Multiracial Individuals, Chi-Ying Cheng, Fiona Lee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article examines how multiracial individuals negotiate their different and sometimes conflicting racial identities. Drawing from previous work on bicultural identity integration (see Benet-Martinez and Haritatos, 2005), we proposed a new construct, multiracial identity integration (MII), to measure individual differences in perceptions of compatibility between multiple racial identities. We found that MII is composed of two independent subscales: that describes whether different racial identities are perceived as disparate, and that describes whether different racial identities are perceived as in conflict. We also found that recalling positive multiracial experiences increased MII, while recalling negative multiracial experiences decreased MII. These findings have …

A Semiotic Analysis Of Unified Modeling Language Graphical Notations, Keng Siau, Yuhong Tian Jan 2009

A Semiotic Analysis Of Unified Modeling Language Graphical Notations, Keng Siau, Yuhong Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unified modeling language (UML) is the standard modeling language for object-oriented system development. Despite its status as a standard, UML has a fuzzy formal specification and a weak theoretical foundation. Semiotics, the study of signs, provides a good theoretical foundation for UML research because graphical notations (or visual signs) of UML are subjected to the principles of signs. In our research, we use semiotics to study the effectiveness of graphical notations in UML. We hypothesized that the use of iconic signs as UML graphical notations leads to representation that is more accurately interpreted and that arouses fewer connotations than the …

Ontology-Based Business Process Customization For Composite Web Services, Qianhui (Althea) Liang, Xindong Wu, E. K. Park, T. Khoshgoftaar, C. Chi Jan 2009

Ontology-Based Business Process Customization For Composite Web Services, Qianhui (Althea) Liang, Xindong Wu, E. K. Park, T. Khoshgoftaar, C. Chi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A key goal of the Semantic Web is to shift social interaction patterns from a producer-centric paradigm to a consumer-centric one. Treating customers as the most valuable assets and making the business models work better for them are at the core of building successful consumer-centric business models. It follows that customizing business processes constitutes a major concern in the realm of a knowledge-pull-based human semantic Web. This paper conceptualizes the customization of service-based business processes leveraging the existing knowledge of Web services and business processes. We represent this conceptualization as a new Extensible Markup Language (XML) markup language Web Ontology …

Quality-Aware Collaborative Question Answering: Methods And Evaluation, Maggy Anastasia Suryanto, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Jan 2009

Quality-Aware Collaborative Question Answering: Methods And Evaluation, Maggy Anastasia Suryanto, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Community Question Answering (QA) portals contain questions and answers contributed by hundreds of millions of users. These databases of questions and answers are of great value if they can be used directly to answer questions from any user. In this research, we address this collaborative QA task by drawing knowledge from the crowds in community QA portals such as Yahoo! Answers. Despite their popularity, it is well known that answers in community QA portals have unequal quality. We therefore propose a quality-aware framework to design methods that select answers from a community QA portal considering answer quality in addition to …

Mediation And The Myth Of Universality, Nadja Alexander

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In his essay entitled ‘Mediation – Pfade zum Frieden’, Professor Montada has made an important contribution to the mediation literature. He questions the universality of the standard mediation model that appears to be sweeping the world with enormous zeal and in doing so puts forward theories and principles to substantiate his view. In this article, Nadja Alexander analyses what the author has to say about the scope and potential for mediation.

Keeping Dictators Honest: The Role Of Population, Quoc-Anh Do, Filipe R. Campante Jan 2009

Keeping Dictators Honest: The Role Of Population, Quoc-Anh Do, Filipe R. Campante

Research Collection School Of Economics

In order to explain the apparently paradoxical presence of acceptable governance in many non-democratic regimes, economists and political scientists have focused mostly on institutions acting as de facto checks and balances. In this paper, we propose that population plays a similar role in guaranteeing the quality of governance and redistribution. We argue and demonstrate with historical evidence that the concentration of population around the policy making center serves as an insurgency threat to a dictatorship, inducing it to yield to more redistribution and better governance. We bring this centered concept of population concentration to the data through the Centered Index …

Case Studies For Teaching Stylistics For Business Communication, Siow-Heng Ong Jan 2009

Case Studies For Teaching Stylistics For Business Communication, Siow-Heng Ong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The employment of stylistics can influence the effectiveness of a brochure, pamphlet, press release and other forms of business communication dramatically. When we consider that the language used to formulate the texts of these publicity materials has the potential to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales, we do well to pay attention to how stylistics can be applied persuasively. This paper provides a theoretical framework for the mother of all stylistics, the metaphor. Examples of how metaphors are used to persuade are then discussed in prominent speeches and other texts. Finally, analytical and constructive assignments are posed and …

Chaos And Uncertainty, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The end of 2008 in the finance industry can be summarized in two words – chaos and uncertainty. The subprime crisis, where everybody lost; the dizzying commodity price movements; the pink slip syndrome; the spectacular bank busts; and the gargantuan bail-outs all vouch for it.

More Than A Cultural Celebration: The Politics Of Chinese New Year In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon Jan 2009

More Than A Cultural Celebration: The Politics Of Chinese New Year In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the aftermath of the May 1998 riots that forced President Suharto to step down, ethnic Chinese received unprecedented freedom to assert their long suppressed cultural and religious identity. Following the transition from assimilation to multiculturalism, for the first time in over three decades Chinese culture became more visible and ethnic Chinese could finally enjoy the freedom to celebrate Chinese New Year (Imlek) publicly. This article focuses on the politics of the re-emergent Chinese New Year celebration in the Indonesian public sphere. It demonstrates the significance of Imlek as an ethnic symbol to Chinese-Indonesians. Borrowing Hobsbawm’s concept of “invented tradition”, …

Propositional Knowledge And Know-How, John N. Williams Nov 2008

Propositional Knowledge And Know-How, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper is roughly in two parts. The first deals with whether know-how is constituted by propositional knowledge, as discussed primarily by Gilbert Ryle (1949) The concept of mind. London: Hutchinson, Jason Stanley and Timothy Williamson (2001). Knowing how. Journal of Philosophy, 98, pp. 411-444 as well as Stephen Hetherington (2006). How to know that knowledge-that is knowledge-how. In S. Hetherington (Ed.) Epistemology futures. Oxford: Oxford University Press. The conclusion of this first part is that know-how sometimes does and sometimes does not consist in propositional knowledge. The second part defends an analysis of know-how inspired by Katherine Hawley' (2003). …

Ontology-Based Visual Word Matching For Near-Duplicate Retrieval, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2008

Ontology-Based Visual Word Matching For Near-Duplicate Retrieval, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a novel approach to exploit the ontological relationship of visual words by linguistic reasoning. A visual word ontology is constructed to facilitate the rigorous evaluation of linguistic similarity across visual words. The linguistic similarity measurement enables cross-bin matching of visual words, compromising the effectiveness and speed of conventional keypoint matching and bag-of-word approaches. A constraint EMD is proposed and experimented to efficiently match visual words. Empirical findings indicate that the proposed approach offers satisfactory performance to near-duplicate retrieval, while still enjoying the merit of speed efficiency compared with other techniques.

Using English Information In Non-English Web Search, Wei Gao, Wei Gao, Ming Zhou Oct 2008

Using English Information In Non-English Web Search, Wei Gao, Wei Gao, Ming Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The leading web search engines have spent a decade building highly specialized ranking functions for English web pages. One of the reasons these ranking functions are effective is that they are designed around features such as PageRank, automatic query and domain taxonomies, and click-through information, etc. Unfortunately, many of these features are absent or altered in other languages. In this work, we show how to exploit these English features for a subset of Chinese queries which we call linguistically non-local (LNL). LNL Chinese queries have a minimally ambiguous English translation which also functions as a good English query. We first …

Unpacking Sources Of Comparative Advantage: A Quantitative Approach, Davin Chor Oct 2008

Unpacking Sources Of Comparative Advantage: A Quantitative Approach, Davin Chor

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops an approach for quantifying the relative importance of different sources of comparative advantage for country welfare in a global trade equilibrium. To explain the pattern of specialization, I present a multi-country, perfectly-competitive Ricardian model that extends Eaton and Kortum (2002) to predict industry trade flows. In this framework, comparative advantage is determined by the interaction of country and industry characteristics, with countries specializing in industries whose specific production needs they are best able to meet with their factor endowments, institutional environment, and technological strengths. I estimate the model parameters using a large dataset of bilateral trade flows, …

Selection Of Concept Detectors For Video Search By Ontology-Enriched Semantic Spaces, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Gang Jiang Oct 2008

Selection Of Concept Detectors For Video Search By Ontology-Enriched Semantic Spaces, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Gang Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes the construction and utilization of two novel semantic spaces, namely Ontology-enriched Semantic Space (OSS) and Ontology-enriched Orthogonal Semantic Space (OS2), to facilitate the selection of concept detectors for video search. These two semantic spaces are enriched with ontology knowledge, while emphasizing consistent and uniform comparison of ontological relatedness among concepts for query-to-concept mapping. OS2, in addition to being a linear space like OSS, also guarantees orthogonality of the semantic space. Compared with other ontology reasoning measures, both spaces are capable of providing platforms that offer a global view of concept inter-relatedness, by allowing evaluation of concept similarity …

Fusing Semantics, Observability, Reliability And Diversity Of Concept Detectors For Video Search, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2008

Fusing Semantics, Observability, Reliability And Diversity Of Concept Detectors For Video Search, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective utilization of semantic concept detectors for large-scale video search has recently become a topic of intensive studies. One of main challenges is the selection and fusion of appropriate detectors, which considers not only semantics but also the reliability of detectors, observability and diversity of detectors in target video domains. In this paper, we present a novel fusion technique which considers different aspects of detectors for query answering. In addition to utilizing detectors for bridging the semantic gap of user queries and multimedia data, we also address the issue of "observability gap" among detectors which could not be directly inferred …

Video Event Detection Using Motion Relativity And Visual Relatedness, Feng Wang, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2008

Video Event Detection Using Motion Relativity And Visual Relatedness, Feng Wang, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event detection plays an essential role in video content analysis. However, the existing features are still weak in event detection because: i) most features just capture what is involved in an event or how the event evolves separately, and thus cannot completely describe the event; ii) to capture event evolution information, only motion distribution over the whole frame is used which proves to be noisy in unconstrained videos; iii) the estimated object motion is usually distorted by camera movement. To cope with these problems, in this paper, we propose a new motion feature, namely Expanded Relative Motion Histogram of Bag-ofVisual-Words …

A Self-Organizing Neural Model For Multimedia Information Fusion, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Kia-Yan Woon, Ah-Hwee Tan Jul 2008

A Self-Organizing Neural Model For Multimedia Information Fusion, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Kia-Yan Woon, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a self-organizing network model for the fusion of multimedia information. By synchronizing the encoding of information across multiple media channels, the neural model known as fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART) generates clusters that encode the associative mappings across multimedia information in a real-time and continuous manner. In addition, by incorporating a semantic category channel, fusion ART further enables multimedia information to be fused into predefined themes or semantic categories. We illustrate the fusion ART’s functionalities through experiments on two multimedia data sets in the terrorist domain and show the viability of the proposed approach.

Mobile Interaction Design: Integrating Individual And Organizational Perspectives, Peter Tarasewich, Jun Gong, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, David Dewester Jul 2008

Mobile Interaction Design: Integrating Individual And Organizational Perspectives, Peter Tarasewich, Jun Gong, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, David Dewester

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While mobile computing provides organizations with many information systems implementation alternatives, it is often difficult to predict the potential benefits, limitations, and problems with mobile applications. Given the inherent portability of mobile devices, many design and use issues can arise which do not exist with desktop systems. While many existing rules of thumb for design of stationary systems apply to mobile systems, many new ones emerge. Issues such as the security and privacy of information take on new dimensions, and potential conflicts can develop when a single mobile device serves both personal and business needs. This paper identifies potential issues …

Examining Differential Item Functioning Of The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale Across Eight Countries (In Press), Lisa E. Baranik, Adam W. Meade, Chad E. Lakey, Charles E. Lance, Changya Hu, Wei Hua, Alex Michalos

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examined the differential item functioning (DIF) of Rosenberg's (1965) Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and compared scores from U.S. participants with those from 7 other countries: Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Singapore, and Taiwan. Results indicate that DIF was present in all comparisons. Moreover, controlling for latent self-esteem, participants from individualistic countries had an easier time reporting high self-esteem on self-competence-related items, whereas participants from communal countries had an easier time reporting high self-esteem on self-liking items (Tafarodi & Milne, 2002). After adjusting for DIF, we found larger mean self-esteem differences between the countries than observed scores initially indicated. …
