Adaptive Transmission Power For Optimal Energy Reliable Multi-Hop Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra Mar 2003

Adaptive Transmission Power For Optimal Energy Reliable Multi-Hop Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We define a transmission power adaptation-based routing technique that finds optimal paths for minimum energy reliable data transfer in multi-hop wireless networks. This optimal choice of the transmission power depends on the link distance between the two nodes and the channel characteristics. Typical energy efficient routing techniques use a transmission power such that the received signal power at the destination minimally exceeds a desired threshold signal strength level. In this paper we argue that such a choice of the transmission power does not always lead to optimal energy routes, since it does not consider differences in the receiver noise levels. …

Hierarchical Text Classification Methods And Their Specification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng Mar 2003

Hierarchical Text Classification Methods And Their Specification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical text classification refers to assigning text documents to the categories in a given category tree based on their content. With large number of categories organized as a tree, hierarchical text classification helps users to find information more quickly and accurately. Nevertheless, hierarchical text classification methods in the past have often been constructed in a proprietary manner. The construction steps often involve human efforts and are not completely automated. In this chapter, we therefore propose a specification language known as HCL (Hierarchical Classification Language). HCL is designed to describe a hierarchical classification method including the definition of a category tree …

Comparing The Routing Energy Overheads Of Ad-Hoc Routing Protocols, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Shorey, Archan Misra Mar 2003

Comparing The Routing Energy Overheads Of Ad-Hoc Routing Protocols, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Shorey, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We use simulations to study the comparative routing overheads of three ad-hoc routing protocols, namely AODV, DSDV and DSR. In contrast to earlier studies, we focus exclusively on the energy consumption and not on other metrics such as the number of routing packets. In particular, we study the `range effects' of the three protocols, i.e., how changes to the transmission power and transmission radius affect the overall energy consumed by routing-related packets. Due to the broadcast nature of the wireless medium, the energy spent in packet receptions is almost as important as the transmission power; using the number of transmissions …

Challenging Forensic Evidence? Observations Of The Use Of Dna In Certain Criminal Trials, Mark Findlay, Julia Grix Mar 2003

Challenging Forensic Evidence? Observations Of The Use Of Dna In Certain Criminal Trials, Mark Findlay, Julia Grix

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Our interest in forensic evidence, and in the use of DNA within criminal trials in particular, arises out of our recent responsibility to review the Crimes (Forensic Procedures) Act 2000 in New South Wales. This review engaged various methodologies to enable an understanding of forensic evidence procedures, from investigation through to courtroom practice. Crucially, the review explored the significance of DNA evidence within criminal trials in order to speculate on ways in which such evidence may be received by the trial 'fact-finders' in an appropriate and enlightening manner.

Reform Of The Choice Of Law Rule Relating To Torts: Report Of The Law Reform Committee Of The Singapore Academy Of Law, Jimmy Yim, Suresh Divyyanathan, Woon Yin Liew, Yock Lin Tan, Joel Tye Beng Lee, Tiong Min Yeo Mar 2003

Reform Of The Choice Of Law Rule Relating To Torts: Report Of The Law Reform Committee Of The Singapore Academy Of Law, Jimmy Yim, Suresh Divyyanathan, Woon Yin Liew, Yock Lin Tan, Joel Tye Beng Lee, Tiong Min Yeo

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

An act done abroad is actionable as a tort in Singapore if it is both actionable as a tort according to the law of Singapore and the law where the act was done. This double actionability rule which requires actionability by the law of Singapore even though the act in question was done abroad, was first enunciated in the 19th century when proof of foreign law was difficult and unfamiliarity with and perhaps suspicion of foreign law was inevitable. The UK, Australia, and Canada have replaced the rule with a more ‘international’ choice of law rule which reflects changes in …

Motion Analysis And Segmentation Through Spatio-Temporal Slices Processing, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang Mar 2003

Motion Analysis And Segmentation Through Spatio-Temporal Slices Processing, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents new approaches in characterizing and segmenting the content of video. These approaches are developed based upon the pattern analysis of spatio-temporal slices. While traditional approaches to motion sequence analysis tend to formulate computational methodologies on two or three adjacent frames, spatio-temporal slices provide rich visual patterns along a larger temporal scale. In this paper, we first describe a motion computation method based on a structure tensor formulation. This method encodes visual patterns of spatio-temporal slices in a tensor histogram, on one hand, characterizing the temporal changes of motion over time, on the other hand, describing the motion …

Maca-P: A Mac For Concurrent Transmissions In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal Mar 2003

Maca-P: A Mac For Concurrent Transmissions In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents the initial design and performance study of MACA-P, a RTS/CTS based MAC protocol that enables simultaneous transmissions in multihop ad-hoc wireless networks. Providing such low-cost multihop and high performance wireless access networks is an important enabler of pervasive computing. MACA-P is a set of enhancements to the 802.11 DCF that allows parallel transmissions in many situations when two neighboring nodes are either both receivers or both transmitters, but a receiver and a transmitter are not neighbors. Like 802.11, MACA-P contains a contention-based reservation phase prior to data transmission. However, the data transmission is delayed by a control …

Energy-Efficient Broadcast And Multicast Trees For Reliable Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra, Jihwang Yeo, Ashok Agrawala Mar 2003

Energy-Efficient Broadcast And Multicast Trees For Reliable Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra, Jihwang Yeo, Ashok Agrawala

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We define energy-efficient broadband and multicast schemes for reliable communication in multi-hop wireless networks. Unlike previous techniques, the choice of neighbors in the broadband and multicast trees in these schemes, are based not only on the link distance, but also on the error rates associated with the link. Our schemes can be implemented using both positive and negative acknowledgement based reliable broadcast techniques in the link layer. Through simulations, we show that our scheme achieves up to 45% improvement over previous schemes on realistic 100-node network topologies. A positive acknowledgment based implementation is preferred. Our simulations show that the additional …

The Director's Fiduciary Obligations: A Fresh Look?, Pearlie Koh Mar 2003

The Director's Fiduciary Obligations: A Fresh Look?, Pearlie Koh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

It is a pillar of equity that a person in a fiduciary position must not make a profit out of his trust which is part of the wider rule that a trustee must not place himself in a position where his duty and his interest may conflict (per Lord Upjohn in Phipps v. Boardman [1967] 2 A.C. 46, 123). The House of Lords in Regal (Hastings) v. Gulliver [1942] 1 All E.R. 378 demonstrated the unrelenting nature, and some have argued inequitable severity (see, e.g., Jones, (1968) 84 L.Q.R. 472), of the director-fiduciary’s obligations to his company. Such absolutism (Lowry …

Confidence And The Constructive Trust, Hang Wu Tang Mar 2003

Confidence And The Constructive Trust, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Almost every leading work on the law of confidence mentions the possibility ofa declaration of a constructive trust as a remedy for a claim involving an abuseof confidence. Apart from the Canadian Supreme Court, no other appellatecourt in the Commonwealth has seriously debated this issue. This paperinvestigates the legitimacy of the use of the constructive trust in this context.

Dividend Omissions And Intraindustry Information Transfers, Gary L. Caton, Jeremy Goh, Ninon Kohers Mar 2003

Dividend Omissions And Intraindustry Information Transfers, Gary L. Caton, Jeremy Goh, Ninon Kohers

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine potential information transfers from companies that announce dividend omissions to their industry rivals. Specifically, we examine the abnormal stock returns and abnormal earnings forecast revisions of rivals after a company makes a dividend-omission announcement. Our results show negative and significant abnormal stock returns and negative and significant abnormal forecast revisions for rival companies in response to the announcement, and a significant and positive relation between the two. We conclude that a dividend-omission announcement transmits unfavorable information across the announcing company's industry that affects cash flow expectations and ultimately stock prices.

Enterprise Integration With Erp And Eai, Jinyoul Lee, Keng Siau, Soongoo Hong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Integration of enterprise with the ERP (enterprise resource planning) and EAI (enterprise application integration) is discussed. The ERP supports the centralized business strategy while EAI accomodates the decentralized business processes. The changes brought in by the internet technology led the internalization and extrenalization to move together. The agility and the flexibility in the organizations would be achieved by a greater degree of communication, coordination and cooperation in human factors and information technologies. The enterprise integration fulfills the needs of both internal business processes and external customer by internalization and externalization.

The Lion And The Lamb: Demythologizing Franklin Roosevelt's Fireside Chats, Elvin T. Lim Feb 2003

The Lion And The Lamb: Demythologizing Franklin Roosevelt's Fireside Chats, Elvin T. Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We are accustomed to a characterization of Franklin Roosevelt’s legendary Fireside Chats as intimate exchanges between the president and the people. This essay argues that the Fireside Chats were a harsher, more castigatory rhetorical genre than such a characterization would allow. A content analysis of the 27 Fireside Chats recorded in FDR’s Public Papers suggests that the Fireside Chats were, on a number of indices, far less intimate than have traditionally been supposed, and in fact among the more vitriolic and declamatory utterances of the 32nd president. The essay proceeds with a discussion of how this illusion of intimacy was …

Meeting The Software Engineering Challenges Of Adaptive Mobile Applications, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Joao Pedro Sousa, Mahadev Satyanarayanan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A critical factor for the commercial success of mobile and task-specific devices is the fast turnaround time of software development. However, developing software for mobile devices is especially hard since applications need to be aware of and adapt to changing resources such as bandwidth and battery.

Service Links And Wage Inequality, Kong Weng Ho, Hian Teck Hoon Feb 2003

Service Links And Wage Inequality, Kong Weng Ho, Hian Teck Hoon

Research Collection School Of Economics

In our general equilibrium model, the variety of specialized service links affects international production fragmentation in manufacturing. Decreases in cost of education or fixed cost of service links raise the relative supply of skilled workers, increase service specialization, and decrease the price of aggregate services. Consequently, the market for service- and skill-intensive component manufacturing enlarges, raising relative demand for skilled workers. Empirically, endogenous change in international outsourcing rather than skill-biased technological progress is the main reason for a modest decline in wage gap despite the rapid rise in relative supply of skilled workers in Singapore from 1978 to 2000.

Optimal Sequential Decision Architectures And The Robustness Of Hierarchies And Polyarchies, Winston T. H. Koh Feb 2003

Optimal Sequential Decision Architectures And The Robustness Of Hierarchies And Polyarchies, Winston T. H. Koh

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper studies collective decision making in the context of a project selection model. We derive the optimal decision architecture when marginal decision costs are present, and investigate the circumstances under which the hierarchy and polyarchy exist as optimal sequential architectures. Our analysis extends previous results on optimal committee decision-making to a sequential setting, and further demonstrates the fragility of the hierarchy and polyarchy as optimal architectures.

Stimulating Firm-Specific Investment Through Risk Management, Heli Wang, Jay B. Barney, Jeffrey J. Reuer Feb 2003

Stimulating Firm-Specific Investment Through Risk Management, Heli Wang, Jay B. Barney, Jeffrey J. Reuer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article suggests a rationale for firm risk management that has been largely ignored in financial economics literature. It presents an argument for harnessing the influence of a company’s stakeholders who, whether as employees, suppliers or customers, make a valuable investment specific to the company. Such investments are crucial for a firm’s competitive advantage, yet because they are firm-specific and therefore cannot be transformed or transferred, stakeholders are often concerned about the risks involved in making them. A company’s efforts to manage risk can therefore persuade stakeholders to make even greater firm-specific investments, bringing benefits to shareholders and stakeholders alike.

China's Software Industry And Its Implications For India, Feichin, Ted Tschang Feb 2003

China's Software Industry And Its Implications For India, Feichin, Ted Tschang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Chinese software industry is small and underdeveloped, compared with its computer and other information technology (IT) hardware industry and compared with India’s software industry. Yet, current status is not necessarily a good guide to future prospects, as China’s recent history amply demonstrates. An important difference between the Chinese and Indian software sectors is the former’s close links to domestic users, notably industrial and commercial users. This has fostered intensive learning in the area of product development for a large and rapidly growing domestic market. India’s software sector, lacking such a dynamic domestic user sector until very recently, has thrived …
