A New Approach To Robust Inference In Cointegration, Sainan Jin, Peter Phillips, Yixiao Sun Oct 2005

A New Approach To Robust Inference In Cointegration, Sainan Jin, Peter Phillips, Yixiao Sun

Research Collection School Of Economics

A new approach to robust testing in cointegrated systems is proposed using non-parametric HAC estimators without truncation. While such HAC estimates are inconsistent, they still produce asymptotically pivotal tests and, as in conventional regression settings, can improve testing and inference.

Review Of Theory Of Regular Economies, Zhenlin Yang Oct 2005

Review Of Theory Of Regular Economies, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This book provides a systematic treatment of the theory of regular economies, one of themost advanced topics in modern general equilibrium theory, emphasizing on the basiceconomic ideas, mathematical tools and important economic applications. By introducingthe necessary mathematical tools, in particular the Differential Topology, graduallywhen needed, Professor Nagata has made this highly mathematical subject understandableto many readers including graduate students in economics. Through the study of variousimportant theoretical problems such as the existence of equilibria, local uniqueness andfiniteness of the set of equilibria, inefficiency of equilibria, etc., Professor Nagata has demonstratedhow successful it is to use mathematics to study important theoretical …

Determinants Of Job Turnover Intentions: Evidence From Singapore, Xiaolin Xing, Zhenlin Yang Oct 2005

Determinants Of Job Turnover Intentions: Evidence From Singapore, Xiaolin Xing, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper explores both observable and unobservable variables that would affect employed workers’ decisions on job change. We find that age, job satisfaction, satisfaction with working environment or job security, and firm size are among the major factors determining workers’ intentions of job-to-job mobility. Younger workers and workers in smaller firms are more likely to look for other jobs. We also find that men are more likely to consider a change in job than women, but when “actually looking for another job” is concerned, men and women do not differ. Furthermore, monthly income and working sector contribute significantly to looking …

Agile Modeling, Agile Software Development, And Extreme Programming: The State Of Research, John Erickson, Kalle Lyytinen, Keng Siau Oct 2005

Agile Modeling, Agile Software Development, And Extreme Programming: The State Of Research, John Erickson, Kalle Lyytinen, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While there are many claims for the successful use of extreme programming (XP) and agile modeling (AM), and the proponents can often be vocal in the extreme regarding their supposed benefits, research evidence supporting proponents' claims is somewhat lacking. Currently, the only research appearing to investigate the phenomena consists of two prominent streams. A small number of case studies and experience reports that generally promote the success of XP in various development environments, and a well-established stream of research into pair programming has generated results that in part support the idea of XP. Research into AM appears to be even …

The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens Oct 2005

The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors derive the exact sampling distribution function of the adverse impact (AI) ratio for single-stage, top-down selections using tests with known effect sizes. Subsequently, it is shown how this distribution function can be used to determine the risk that a future selection decision on the basis of such tests will result in an outcome that reflects the presence of AI. The article therefore provides test and selection practitioners with a valuable tool to decide between alternative selection predictors.

Trade Mark Dilution In Singapore: The Aftermath Of Mcdonald’S V Mactea, David Llewelyn Oct 2005

Trade Mark Dilution In Singapore: The Aftermath Of Mcdonald’S V Mactea, David Llewelyn

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a unanimous decision delivered in September 2004, the Court of Appeal of Singapore has ruled against McDonald's Corporation in its attempts to stop a small Singapore company, Future Enterprises Pty Ltd, from registering its marks "MacNoodles", "MacTea" and "MacChocolate". This case has international significance as the Singapore court ruled, confirming the position taken by courts in a number of other jurisdictions, that McDonald's did not have an exclusive right over the prefix "Mc" in relation to food and beverages in the absence of deception or confusion. However, Singapore's trade mark laws have since undergone a major revamp. Under the …

Purpose: To discuss the effectiveness of a sustainable entrepreneurship training program in several countries in Asia, used by global firms to identify junior management talent, by applying the PETE model of creating an engaging action-learning program. Design/Methodology/Approach: Current literature is reviewed to make a case for the applicability of action-learning based entrepreneurship training. The results of interviews with more than 20 senior level managers of multi-national corporations in 5 Asian countries are compared to self-evaluations of more than 300 student participants and more than 30 faculty evaluations of the program. We use the Practical Entrepreneurship Teaching Engagement (PETE) model to …

And/Or Graph And Search Algorithm For Discovering Composite Web Services, Qianhui (Althea) Liang, Stanley Y. W. Su Oct 2005

And/Or Graph And Search Algorithm For Discovering Composite Web Services, Qianhui (Althea) Liang, Stanley Y. W. Su

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a formalization of the Web Service composition problem as a search problem in an AND/OR graph, and a search algorithm for searching the graph to identify composite service(s) that satisfies a Web Service request. Given a service request that can only be satisfied by a composition of Web Services, we identify the service categories that are relevant to the request and dynamically construct an AND/OR graph to capture the input/output dependencies among the Web Services of these service categories. The graph is modified, based on the information provided in the service request. The search algorithm is then …

Towards Semantic Service Request Of Web Service Composition, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen-Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller Oct 2005

Towards Semantic Service Request Of Web Service Composition, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen-Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

When meeting the challenges in automatic and semi-automatic Web service composition, capturing the user's service demand and preferences is as important as knowing what the services can do. This paper discusses the idea of semantic service requests for composite services, and presents a way to model the elements of a composite service request as user preferences and constraints. The model is based on an interactive and iterative strategy meant to obtain the exact requirements from potential service consumers. The markup vocabularies and associated inference mechanism of OWL-S are used as a means to bring semantics to service requests. Language constructs …

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard C. Davis Oct 2005

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard C. Davis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Animation is a powerful medium that is accessible to few, because current animation tools are extremely complex. This complexity arises partially from current tools’ focus on precise, often unnecessary details and partially from the difficulty of finding a small but sufficiently powerful set of tool features. We are designing K-Sketch, an informal 2D animation tool that uses sketching and demonstration to radically reduce the time needed to create an animation. Our field studies investigating the needs of current anima-tion tool users and would-be users are helping us to mini-mize complexity by showing us how to prioritize the many possible tool …

Regret And The Control Of Temporary Preferences, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb Oct 2005

Regret And The Control Of Temporary Preferences, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Regret is often symptomatic of the defective decisions associated with temporary preference problems. It may also help overcome these defects. Outcome regret can modify the relative utilities of different payoffs. Process regret can motivate search for better decision processes or trap-evading strategies. Heightened regret may thus be functional for control of these self-defeating choices.

The Implied Jump Risk Of Libor Rates, Kian Guan Lim, Christopher Ting, Mitch Warachka Oct 2005

The Implied Jump Risk Of Libor Rates, Kian Guan Lim, Christopher Ting, Mitch Warachka

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines implied parameters from options on LIBOR futures. Jump-diffusion models are found to offer superior in-sample and out-of-sample performance when compared to their pure diffusion counterpart. The need to incorporate stochastic jump magnitudes into LIBOR dynamics is also documented. In addition, empirical evidence reveals that the jump component in LIBOR rates is important for pricing their derivatives. Furthermore, variation in jump risk often coincides with Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decisions and a small subset of macroeconomic announcements.

Common Pattern Discovery Using Earth Mover's Distance And Local Flow Maximization, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2005

Common Pattern Discovery Using Earth Mover's Distance And Local Flow Maximization, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a novel segmentation-insensitive approach for mining common patterns from 2 images. We develop an algorithm using the earth movers distance (EMD) framework, unary and adaptive neighborhood color similarity. We then propose a novel local flow maximization approach to provide the best estimation of location and scale of the common pattern. This is achieved by performing an iterative optimization in search of the most stable flows' centroid. Common pattern discovery is difficult owing to the huge search space and problem domain. We intend to solve this problem by reducing the search space through identifying the location …

Defining The 'Social' In 'Social Entrepreneurship': Altruism And Entrepreneurship, Wee Liang Tan, John N. Williams, Teck Meng Tan Sep 2005

Defining The 'Social' In 'Social Entrepreneurship': Altruism And Entrepreneurship, Wee Liang Tan, John N. Williams, Teck Meng Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

What is social entrepreneurship? In, particular, what’s so social about it? Understanding what social entrepreneurship is enables researchers to study the phenomenon and policy-makers to design measures to encourage it. However, such an understanding is lacking partly because there is no universally accepted definition of entrepreneurship as yet. In this paper, we suggest a definition of social entrepreneurship that intuitively accords with what is generally accepted as entrepreneurship and that captures the way in which entrepreneurship may be altruistic. Based on this we provide a taxonomy of social entrepreneurship and identify a number of real cases from Asia illustrating the …

Tools To Keep Projects On The Rails - The Completion Of Projects On Time And To Budget Often Seems An Elusive Goal, But Success Rates Can Be Improved With The Application Of Risk Management Techniques, Bert De Reyck Sep 2005

Tools To Keep Projects On The Rails - The Completion Of Projects On Time And To Budget Often Seems An Elusive Goal, But Success Rates Can Be Improved With The Application Of Risk Management Techniques, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In 2004 the Standish group, a research company that produces annual reports on IT projects carried out in the US, reported that only 29 per cent of these projects were considered a success, with the vast majority running over time and over budget. Cost overruns averaged 56 per cent of original budgets, and projects took on average 84 per cent longer than originally anticipated. Anecdotal evidence suggests that things are not much better elsewhere. The construction of the new Wembley Stadium in London is two months behind schedule and Pounds 45m over budget. And the West Coast Mainline project, which …

Green Revolutions And Miracle Economies: Agricultural Innovation, Trade And Growth, Brishti Guha Sep 2005

Green Revolutions And Miracle Economies: Agricultural Innovation, Trade And Growth, Brishti Guha

Research Collection School Of Economics

The purpose of this paper is to develop a simple model of an economy in which growth is driven by a combination of exogenous technical change in agriculture as well as by a rising world demand for labor-intensive manufactured exports. We explore the relative roles of agricultural innovation and rising export demand in a model with two traded industrial goods and a non-traded agricultural good, food. When the non-traded sector uses a specific factor, we show that technical change in agriculture may be the key to sustained factor accumulation in industry, in particular driving intersectoral labor migration. A key assumption …

Separating The Effects Of Asymmetric Incentives And Inefficient Use Of Information On Financial Analysts' Consensus Earnings Forecast Errors, Stanimir Markov, Min Yen Tan Sep 2005

Separating The Effects Of Asymmetric Incentives And Inefficient Use Of Information On Financial Analysts' Consensus Earnings Forecast Errors, Stanimir Markov, Min Yen Tan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Prior research on financial analysts’ consensus earnings forecast errors has tended to explore either incentives-based or inefficient information use-based explanations for the properties of the analysts’ forecast errors. This has limited our understanding of financial analysts’ expectation formation process as incentives and cognitive biases are likely to simultaneously affect the properties of the analysts’ consensus forecast errors. Our main contribution is in separating these two effects. In particular, using consensus quarterly earnings forecast data, we document that analysts have asymmetric loss function and that they do not fully use information about past earnings and forecast errors in minimizing their expected …

Client, Industry And Country Factors Affecting Choice Of Big N Industry Expert Auditors, Michael Ettredge, Soo Young Kwon, Chee Yeow Lim

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study investigates client choice of industry specialist auditors from among the Big N (Big 4 or 5) in an international (non-U.S.) setting. We investigate client-specific, industry-level and country-level factors hypothesized to enhance or decrease Big N clients' demand for industry expertise. Using data for 29 countries and 14 broad industries from 1993-2005, we find that international client choice of industry specialist Big N auditors is positively associated with client size, client growth opportunities, and client capital intensity. The choice of industry specialists from among the Big N is more prevalent in countries where levels of investor protection, quality of …

Partial Adjustable Autonomy In Multi-Agent Environment And Its Application To Military Logistics, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lucas Agussurja, Ramesh Thangarajoo Sep 2005

Partial Adjustable Autonomy In Multi-Agent Environment And Its Application To Military Logistics, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lucas Agussurja, Ramesh Thangarajoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a rapidly changing environment, the behavior and decision-making power of agents may have to be adaptive with respect to a fluctuating autonomy. In this paper, a centralized fuzzy approach is proposed to sense changes in environmental conditions and translate them to changes in agent autonomy. A distributed coalition formation scheme is then applied to allow agents in the new autonomy to renegotiate to establish schedule consistency. The proposed framework is applied to a real-time logistics control of a military hazardous material storage facility under peace-to-war transition.

Strategic Implications Of Mobile Technology: A Case Study Using Value-Focused Thinking, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile technology extends computing and the Internet into the wireless medium, and provides greater flexibility in communication, collaboration, and information sharing. In this research, we used the ‘Value-Focused Thinking’ approach to examine the strategic implications of mobile technology in a leading publishing company. The result is a means-ends objective network that depicts the fundamental objectives of using mobile technology and how the fundamental objectives can be achieved through means objectives. The research findings suggest three main strategic implications of mobile technology: (1) improve working process; (2) increase internal communication and knowledge sharing; and (3) enhance sales and marketing effectiveness.

Reviews: Architectures Of Knowledge: Firms, Capabilities And Communities, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark Sep 2005

Reviews: Architectures Of Knowledge: Firms, Capabilities And Communities, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Audiences are constantly bombarded by a whole host of bland catchphrases. Indeed, their verygeneration is viewed as a necessary part of the art of modern media communication. Complexand contested issues are forcibly reduced to snappy and memorable phrases so as to be quicklydigested by an apparently impatient and inattentive audience. In some respects capturing theattention of the audience is more important than the precision of the statement. If we were tosurvey the most frequently uttered phrases, some of the following would very likely be in the topten: `Markets are more competitive than ever', `we live in a truly globalized world', …

Forms Of Expression For Designing Visual Languages For Animation, Richard Christopher Davis, James A. Landay Sep 2005

Forms Of Expression For Designing Visual Languages For Animation, Richard Christopher Davis, James A. Landay

Research Collection School of Computing and Information Systems

We present further steps in our research into visual languages for animation. Animation is a rich mode of communication that is currently accessible to few, because animation systems are complex. Some systems try to make animation simple but put severe limits on users’ creative expression. Our field studies are demonstrating that would-be animators need to express animation in a wide variety of ways. We are developing a taxonomy of forms of expression for animation that will help the designers of visual languages for animation to determine which expressive forms to support. Our end goal is to build animation sketching systems …

Integrating The Diverse Definitions Of Happiness: A Time-Sequential Framework Of Subjective Well-Being, Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, Maya Tamir, Christie N. Scollon, Marrisa Diener Sep 2005

Integrating The Diverse Definitions Of Happiness: A Time-Sequential Framework Of Subjective Well-Being, Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, Maya Tamir, Christie N. Scollon, Marrisa Diener

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The field of subjective well-being (SWB) is primarily concerned with people's evaluation of their lives; however, it includes a wide range of concepts, from momentary moods to global life satisfaction judgments. We propose a framework that integrates these diverse constructs. Our sequential temporal framework of subjective well-being describes experiences of well-being from the events and circumstances that cause evaluative reactions, through the emotional reactions to these events, to recall of these reactions, and finally to global judgments of well-being based on the previous stages. The hypothesized processes that translate the various steps in the sequence into one another are described, …

Imagining Confucius: Paradigmatic Character And Virtue Ethics, Sor-Hoon Tan Sep 2005

Imagining Confucius: Paradigmatic Character And Virtue Ethics, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the Analects, discussions of how someone should act or had actedare accompanied by some assessment of that person’s character, someconclusion as to his having or lacking what are traditionally understoodas Confucian virtues—ren (benevolence or humanity), yi (appropriatenessor rightness, or even righteousness), li (rites, rituals, or ritualpropriety), zhi (wisdom), xin (trustworthiness), and yong (courage).1Scholars have different views as to how and to what extent Confucianvirtues are comparable with virtues in Western ethics like Aristotle’s.2The Analects is as preoccupied with the exemplary person (junzi) andhis virtues as the Nicomachean Ethics is concerned with elucidating thevirtues via portraits of the virtuous man. …

Recruitment-Related Information Sources And Organizational Attractiveness: Can Something Be Done About Negative Publicity?, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens Sep 2005

Recruitment-Related Information Sources And Organizational Attractiveness: Can Something Be Done About Negative Publicity?, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The present study begins to fill a gap in the recruitment literature by investigating whether the effects of negative publicity on organizational attractiveness can be mitigated by recruitment advertising and positive word-of-mouth. The accessibility-diagnosticity model was used as a theoretical framework to formulate predictions about the effects of these recruitment-related information sources. A mixed 2 x 2 experimental design was applied to examine whether initial assessments of organizational attractiveness based on negative publicity would improve at a second evaluation after exposure to a second, more positive information source. We found that both recruitment advertising and word-of-mouth improved organizational attractiveness, but …

The Importance Of Traits And Abilities In Supervisors' Hirability Decisions As A Function Of Method Of Assessment, Filip Lievens, Scott Highhouse, Wilfried De Corte Sep 2005

The Importance Of Traits And Abilities In Supervisors' Hirability Decisions As A Function Of Method Of Assessment, Filip Lievens, Scott Highhouse, Wilfried De Corte

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Past research on the importance of traits and abilities in supervisors' hirability decisions has ignored the influence of the selection method used to derive information about these traits and abilities. In this study, experienced retail store supervisors (N = 163) rated job applicant profiles that were described on the Big Five and General Mental Ability (GMA) personality dimensions. Contrary to past studies, the supervisors were also informed about the method of assessment used (paper-and-pencil test vs. unstructured interview). Hierarchical linear modelling analyses showed that the importance attached to extraversion and GMA was significantly moderated by the selection method, with extraversion …
