The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens
The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors derive the exact sampling distribution function of the adverse impact (AI) ratio for single-stage, top-down selections using tests with known effect sizes. Subsequently, it is shown how this distribution function can be used to determine the risk that a future selection decision on the basis of such tests will result in an outcome that reflects the presence of AI. The article therefore provides test and selection practitioners with a valuable tool to decide between alternative selection predictors.

Dsim: A Distance-Based Indexing Method For Genomic Sequences, Xia Cao, Beng-Chin Ooi, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Anthony K. H. Tung
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a Distance-based Sequence Indexing Method (DSIM) for indexing and searching genome databases. Borrowing the idea of video compression, we compress the genomic sequence database around a set of automatically selected reference words, formed from high-frequency data substrings and substrings in past queries. The compression captures the distance of each non-reference word in the database to some reference word. At runtime, a query is processed by comparing its substrings with the compressed data strings, through their distances to the reference words. We also propose an efficient scheme to incrementally update the reference words and the compressed …
Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Wong, Wei Gao, Wei Gao
Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Wong, Wei Gao, Wei Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Informal language is actively used in network-mediated communication, e.g. chat room, BBS, email and text message. We refer the anomalous terms used in such context as network informal language (NIL) expressions. For example, “偶(ou3)” is used to replace “我(wo3)” in Chinese ICQ. Without unconventional resource, knowledge and techniques, the existing natural language processing approaches exhibit less effectiveness in dealing with NIL text. We propose to study NIL expressions with a NIL corpus and investigate techniques in processing NIL expressions. Two methods for Chinese NIL expression recognition are designed in NILER system. The experimental results show that pattern matching method produces …
Cultural Economy: A Critical Review, Chris Gibson, Lily Kong
Cultural Economy: A Critical Review, Chris Gibson, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article reviews work on 'cultural economy', particularly from within geography, and from other disciplines, where there are links to overtly geographical debates. We seek to clarify different interpretations of the term and to steer a course through this multivalency to suggest productive new research agendas. We review and critique work on cultural economy that represents a relatively straightforward economic geography, based on empirical observation while theoretically informed and driven by debates about Fordism and post-Fordism, agglomeration and cluster theory. Some of these ideas about cultural economy have proven attractive to policy-makers and we map a normative script of cultural …
Towards Semantic Service Request Of Web Service Composition, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen-Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller
Towards Semantic Service Request Of Web Service Composition, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen-Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
When meeting the challenges in automatic and semi-automatic Web service composition, capturing the user's service demand and preferences is as important as knowing what the services can do. This paper discusses the idea of semantic service requests for composite services, and presents a way to model the elements of a composite service request as user preferences and constraints. The model is based on an interactive and iterative strategy meant to obtain the exact requirements from potential service consumers. The markup vocabularies and associated inference mechanism of OWL-S are used as a means to bring semantics to service requests. Language constructs …

Multiple Pareto-rankable equilibria may obtain in an overlapping generations model where consumers save to reach a fixed target. Existence and uniqueness conditions are discussed. The model displays excess consumption sensitivity to current income and perfect old-age insurance.
Institutions, Wages, And Inequality: The Case Of Europe And Its Periphery (1500-1899), Davin Chor
Institutions, Wages, And Inequality: The Case Of Europe And Its Periphery (1500-1899), Davin Chor
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper explores the long-run relationship between institutions and wage outcomes in Europe and its periphery. I find that cities that exercised stronger institutional protection of private property experienced: (i) higher levels of both skilled and unskilled real wages, as well as (ii) lower levels of inequality as measured by the skilled-unskilled wage ratio. While the first result corroborates existing work on the positive growth effects of better institutions, the second finding is more novel to the literature. Some explanations are proposed for how stronger institutions can cause an increase in the relative supply of skilled workers, thus lowering wage …
Q-Convergence With Interquartile Ranges, Sung Jin Kang, Myoung-Jae Lee
Q-Convergence With Interquartile Ranges, Sung Jin Kang, Myoung-Jae Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
We introduce a new convergence concept ‘Q-convergence’ which defines convergence in national incomes as a shrinking interquartile range (IQR) of the national income distribution. Compared with the other convergence definitions in the literature, Q-convergence has the following advantages. First, IQR, which represents dispersion and inequality of the income distribution, is also closely linked to the two-group clustering with the lower and upper quartiles being the ‘centers’ of the two groups. Second, IQR is equivariant to increasing transformations and thus reconciles better conflicting empirical findings using level or log data. Third, IQR is insensitive to outliers, leading to robust statistical inferences. …
The Optimal Design Of Fallible Organizations: Invariance Of Optimal Decision Criterion And Uniqueness Of Hierarchy And Polyarchy Structures, Winston T. H. Koh
The Optimal Design Of Fallible Organizations: Invariance Of Optimal Decision Criterion And Uniqueness Of Hierarchy And Polyarchy Structures, Winston T. H. Koh
Research Collection School Of Economics
We present a general framework to study the project selection problem in an organization of fallible decision-makers. We show that when the organizational size and the majority rule for project acceptance are optimized simultaneously, the optimal quality of decision-making, as determined by the decision criterion, is invariant, and depends only on the expertise of decision-makers. This result clarifies that the circumstances under which the decision-making quality varies with the organizational structure are situations where the organizational size or majority rule is restricted from reaching the optimal level. Moreover, in contrast to earlier findings in the literature that the hierarchy and …

Agile Modeling, Agile Software Development, And Extreme Programming: The State Of Research, John Erickson, Kalle Lyytinen, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While there are many claims for the successful use of extreme programming (XP) and agile modeling (AM), and the proponents can often be vocal in the extreme regarding their supposed benefits, research evidence supporting proponents' claims is somewhat lacking. Currently, the only research appearing to investigate the phenomena consists of two prominent streams. A small number of case studies and experience reports that generally promote the success of XP in various development environments, and a well-established stream of research into pair programming has generated results that in part support the idea of XP. Research into AM appears to be even …

Trade Mark Dilution In Singapore: The Aftermath Of Mcdonald’S V Mactea, David Llewelyn
Trade Mark Dilution In Singapore: The Aftermath Of Mcdonald’S V Mactea, David Llewelyn
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In a unanimous decision delivered in September 2004, the Court of Appeal of Singapore has ruled against McDonald's Corporation in its attempts to stop a small Singapore company, Future Enterprises Pty Ltd, from registering its marks "MacNoodles", "MacTea" and "MacChocolate". This case has international significance as the Singapore court ruled, confirming the position taken by courts in a number of other jurisdictions, that McDonald's did not have an exclusive right over the prefix "Mc" in relation to food and beverages in the absence of deception or confusion. However, Singapore's trade mark laws have since undergone a major revamp. Under the …

Cuhk At Imageclef 2005: Cross-Language And Cross-Media Image Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, J. Zhu, M. Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we describe our studies of cross-language and cross-media image retrieval at the ImageCLEF 2005. This is the first participation of our CUHK (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) group at ImageCLEF. The task in which we participated is the “bilingual ad hoc retrieval” task. There are three major focuses and contributions in our participation. The first is the empirical evaluation of language models and smoothing strategies for cross-language image retrieval. The second is the evaluation of cross-media image retrieval, i.e., combining text and visual contents for image retrieval. The last is the evaluation of bilingual image retrieval …
Integrating The Diverse Definitions Of Happiness: A Time-Sequential Framework Of Subjective Well-Being, Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, Maya Tamir, Christie N. Scollon, Marrisa Diener
Integrating The Diverse Definitions Of Happiness: A Time-Sequential Framework Of Subjective Well-Being, Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, Maya Tamir, Christie N. Scollon, Marrisa Diener
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The field of subjective well-being (SWB) is primarily concerned with people's evaluation of their lives; however, it includes a wide range of concepts, from momentary moods to global life satisfaction judgments. We propose a framework that integrates these diverse constructs. Our sequential temporal framework of subjective well-being describes experiences of well-being from the events and circumstances that cause evaluative reactions, through the emotional reactions to these events, to recall of these reactions, and finally to global judgments of well-being based on the previous stages. The hypothesized processes that translate the various steps in the sequence into one another are described, …
Low Latency Multimedia Broadcast In Multi-Rate Wireless Meshes, Chun-Tong Chou, Archan Misra
Low Latency Multimedia Broadcast In Multi-Rate Wireless Meshes, Chun-Tong Chou, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In a multi-rate wireless network, a node can dynamically adjust its link transmission rate by switching between different modulation schemes. For the current IEEE802.11a/b/g standards, this rate adjustment is limited to unicast traffic only while multicast and broadcast traffic is always transmitted at the lowest possible rate. In this paper, we consider a novel type of multi-rate mesh networks where a node can dynamically adjust its link layer multicast rates to its neighbours. In particular, we consider the problem of realising low latency network-wide broadcast in this type of multi-rate wireless meshes. We will first show that the multi-rate broadcast …

This study uses emerging meta-analytic methods, in combination with structural equations methodology, to synthesize empirical studies and extend the understanding of relationships amongthe correlates (antecedents and/or outcomes) of innovation in organizations. this study draws upon a meta-analytic database of 155 independent samples from 108 studies from the period of 1970 through 2004. Specifically, the study examines the impact of 26 determinants and 3 performance outcomes of innovation with an overall sample size of 229,395. Organizational resources account for the majority of unique variance explained in predicting innovation generation. Overall findings indicate that innovation is significantly and positively related to superior …
Separating The Effects Of Asymmetric Incentives And Inefficient Use Of Information On Financial Analysts' Consensus Earnings Forecast Errors, Stanimir Markov, Min Yen Tan
Separating The Effects Of Asymmetric Incentives And Inefficient Use Of Information On Financial Analysts' Consensus Earnings Forecast Errors, Stanimir Markov, Min Yen Tan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Prior research on financial analysts’ consensus earnings forecast errors has tended to explore either incentives-based or inefficient information use-based explanations for the properties of the analysts’ forecast errors. This has limited our understanding of financial analysts’ expectation formation process as incentives and cognitive biases are likely to simultaneously affect the properties of the analysts’ consensus forecast errors. Our main contribution is in separating these two effects. In particular, using consensus quarterly earnings forecast data, we document that analysts have asymmetric loss function and that they do not fully use information about past earnings and forecast errors in minimizing their expected …
Theory And Evidence On The Liability Of Relationship Commitment: Towards An Understanding Of Why Vendor Firms Persist In Underperforming Customer Relationships, Sundar G. Bharadwaj, Das Narayandas
Theory And Evidence On The Liability Of Relationship Commitment: Towards An Understanding Of Why Vendor Firms Persist In Underperforming Customer Relationships, Sundar G. Bharadwaj, Das Narayandas
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this multi-method study, we extend and complement extant research on relationship commitment through rigorous field research and an in-depth cross-functional review to develop a model of the antecedents of vendor firmsÆ commitment to underperforming customer relationships. The conceptual model incorporates relationship-, performance-, organizational-, and investment-related factors as antecedents to vendor commitment. We then test the model with two survey-based studies, and compare and contrast the impact of these various antecedents across 382 underperforming and above-average performance customer relationships. The results indicate that continuity of relationship personnel, relationship age, performance stability, nature of performance change, visibility of the relationship, senior …

Affect As Information: The Moderating Roles Of Self-Regulatory System And Diagnosticity Of Affective Valence [Extended Abstract], Thomas Kramer, Song-Oh Yoon
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The article presents a summary of three studies looking at the use of affect for information. The authors hypothesize that dependence upon affect changes according to individuals' self-regulatory systems. In the studies, the authors found that individuals with a temporary or chronic behavioral activation system/promotion self-regulatory focus tend to depend on positive and negative emotions for information, whereas individuals with a temporary or chronic behavioral inhibition system/prevention self-regulatory focus only rely on positive emotions for information.
Partial Adjustable Autonomy In Multi-Agent Environment And Its Application To Military Logistics, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lucas Agussurja, Ramesh Thangarajoo
Partial Adjustable Autonomy In Multi-Agent Environment And Its Application To Military Logistics, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lucas Agussurja, Ramesh Thangarajoo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In a rapidly changing environment, the behavior and decision-making power of agents may have to be adaptive with respect to a fluctuating autonomy. In this paper, a centralized fuzzy approach is proposed to sense changes in environmental conditions and translate them to changes in agent autonomy. A distributed coalition formation scheme is then applied to allow agents in the new autonomy to renegotiate to establish schedule consistency. The proposed framework is applied to a real-time logistics control of a military hazardous material storage facility under peace-to-war transition.

Measuring National Delegate Positions At The Convention On The Future Of Europe Using Computerized Word Scoring, Kenneth Benoit, Michael Laver, Christine Arnold, Paul Pennings, Madeline O. Hosli
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The Convention on the Future of Europe that led to the eventual drafting of an EU Constitution involved numerous political actors from many countries. Their negotiations over the constitution generated a huge volume of texts containing substantive information about their preferences for EU institutional and political outcomes. In this paper, we attempt to measure these preferences at the national party level by analysing the Convention texts using the computerized ‘word-scoring’ method for text analysis (Laver et al., 2003). For each national party whose delegates’ texts were recorded at the Convention, we estimate their positions on four political dimensions. We then …

New Efficient Mds Array Codes For Raid Part I: Reed-Solomon-Like Codes For Tolerating Three Disk Failures, Gui-Liang Feng, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao, Jia-Chen Shen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a class of binary maximum distance separable (MDS) array codes for tolerating disk failures in redundant arrays of inexpensive disks (RAID) architecture based on circular permutation matrices. The size of the information part is m×n, the size of the parity-check part is m×3, and the minimum distance is 4, where n is the number of information disks, the number of parity-check disks is 3, and (m+1) is a prime integer. In practical applications, m can be very large and n is from 20 to 50. The code rate is R=n/(n+3). These codes can be used for tolerating …

Comment On "Realized Variance And Market Microstructure Noise" By Peter R. Hansen And Asger Lunde, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
With the availability of ultra high frequency financial data, the task of finding an appropriate econometric model to describe the movement of financial variables at the tick-by-tick level has become an important goal in financial econometric research. The task has both theoretical and empirical dimensions. From an empirical perspective, the near continuous recording of financial asset prices has opened up the intriguing possibility of fitting the quadratic variation process empirically, leading to what is possibly the most direct nonparametric measure of asset price volatility. The resulting quantity has become known in the financial econometrics literature as realized variance (RV) and …
The Auditor And The Firm: A Simple Model Of Corporate Cheating And Intermediation, Brishti Guha
The Auditor And The Firm: A Simple Model Of Corporate Cheating And Intermediation, Brishti Guha
Research Collection School Of Economics
We apply a game-theoretic model to the analysis of the recent spate of corporate scandals in which firms have cheated their investors, often with the aid of external auditors. We characterize the different types of equilibria that obtain for different parameter ranges in an auditor’s absence (the parameters we consider being early signal accuracy – a measure of transparency – and withdrawal costs – a measure of the liquidity of investments). We also analyze whether and under what conditions the presence of an informed auditor could lead to an improvement in the sense of honest behavior replacing cheating as the …

Trade, Growth And Increasing Returns To Infrastructure: The Role Of The Sophisticated Monopolist, Ashok S. Guha, Brishti Guha
Research Collection School Of Economics
We consider a model of international trade with increasing returns in a non-traded input into industry, infrastructure, and show that the nature of equilibrium depends crucially on whether the infrastructure provider acts in a naïve manner – akin to a Level 1 agent in a cognitive hierarchy (C-H) model – or in a more sophisticated manner. Infrastructure requires a fixed investment and is produced under decreasing marginal costs, and we model two possible market forms, monopoly and Cournot oligopoly with free entry – both capable of generating pecuniary externalities in the manufacturing sector . Unlike most other work exploring the …
Trademark Assignment "With Goodwill": A Concept Whose Time Has Gone, Irene Calboli
Trademark Assignment "With Goodwill": A Concept Whose Time Has Gone, Irene Calboli
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Historically, starting from the premise that trademark protection is about consumer welfare, trademark law has required trademarks to be assigned with the goodwill of the business to which they refer, to deter assignees from changing the quality of the marked products. Yet, ever since its adoption, this rule has been hard to enforce because it hinges on a concept that is ambiguous and difficult to frame in a legislative context: trademark goodwill. Additionally, regardless of this rule, trading in trademarks has been a recurrent practice in the business world, and trademark practices have traditionally provided instruments to assist this trade. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In order to organise and manage geospatial and georeferenced information on the Web making them convenient for searching and browsing, a digital portal known as G-Portal has been designed and implemented. Compared to other digital libraries, G-Portal is unique for several of its features. It maintains metadata resources in XML with flexible resource schemas. Logical groupings of metadata resources as projects and layers are possible to allow the entire metadata collection to be partitioned differently for users with different information needs. These metadata resources can be displayed in both the classification-based and map-based interfaces provided by G-Portal. G-Portal further incorporates …
Evaluation Criteria For Information Systems Development Methodologies, Keng Siau, Xin Tan
Evaluation Criteria For Information Systems Development Methodologies, Keng Siau, Xin Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The evaluation of information systems development methodologies is becoming increasingly important. The lack of a commonly acceptable set of criteria for evaluation, however, hinders aggregating knowledge from field studies. Our study attempts to fill the gap. To reduce the effects of subjectivity, we surveyed the opinions of a group (28) of experienced IS researchers. Fifty-one criteria were generated from the research participants. A systematic content analysis technique will be applied for grouping the unique criteria into general categories. Upon completion, our study can make both academic and practical contributions in evaluating ISD methodologies.
Privacy Issues In The Era Of Ubiquitous Commerce, Holtjona Galanxhi, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Privacy Issues In The Era Of Ubiquitous Commerce, Holtjona Galanxhi, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The vision of ubiquitous commerce (u-commerce) is realized through the convergence of electronic, mobile, television, voice and silent commerce applications. The ubiquity, universality, uniqueness, and unison of u-commerce will provide two principal benefits for individual users and companies: increased convenience as well as more personalized and customized services. However, u-commerce will also bring new issues such as a greater degree of privacy concerns that will impact individual users, companies, and the society at large. This paper proposes and elaborates on a conceptual framework for privacy in the u-commerce era. It combines Lessig’s macro-level perspective – the four-factor model of privacy …
