An Efficient Algorithm For Learning Event-Recording Automata, Shang-Wei Lin, Étienne André, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun, Yang Liu
An Efficient Algorithm For Learning Event-Recording Automata, Shang-Wei Lin, Étienne André, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun, Yang Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In inference of untimed regular languages, given an unknown language to be inferred, an automaton is constructed to accept the unknown language from answers to a set of membership queries each of which asks whether a string is contained in the unknown language. One of the most well-known regular inference algorithms is the L* algorithm, proposed by Angluin in 1987, which can learn a minimal deterministic finite automaton (DFA) to accept the unknown language. In this work, we propose an efficient polynomial time learning algorithm, TL*, for timed regular language accepted by event-recording automata. Given an unknown timed regular language, …

Differencing Labeled Transition Systems, Zhenchang Xing, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Concurrent programs often use Labeled Transition Systems (LTSs) as their operational semantic models, which provide the basis for automatic system analysis and verification. System behaviors (generated from the operational semantics) evolve as programs evolve for fixing bugs or implementing new user requirements. Even when a program remains unchanged, its LTS models explored by a model checker or analyzer may be different due to the application of different exploration methods. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach (named SpecDiff) to computing the differences between two LTSs, representing the evolving behaviors of a concurrent program. SpecDiff considers LTSs as Typed Attributed …

In 2008, the Sanlu Group, a former giant in the Chinese dairy industry and a quintessential Chinese organization, was confronted with the melamine-contaminated milk crisis. Its products were blamed for causing at least six babies' deaths and damaging the kidneys of about 294,000 babies. Sanlu was criticized for its crisis handling, which resulted in its collapse several months later. Using the contingency theory of strategic conflict management and Coombs' typology of crisis communication strategies, this study explored Sanlu's crisis management as a mirror to understanding the Chinese approach to crisis management. Findings showed that influenced by political, social, and cultural …

Prts: An Approach For Model Checking Probabilistic Real-Time Hierarchical Systems, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Songzheng Song, Jin Song Dong, Xiaohong Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Model Checking real-life systems is always difficult since such systems usually have quantitative timing factors and work in unreliable environment. The combination of real-time and probability in hierarchical systems presents a unique challenge to system modeling and analysis. In this work, we develop an automated approach for verifying probabilistic, real-time, hierarchical systems. Firstly, a modeling language called PRTS is defined, which combines data structures, real-time and probability. Next, a zone-based method is used to build a finite-state abstraction of PRTS models so that probabilistic model checking could be used to calculate the probability of a system satisfying certain property. We …

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are expected to run unattendedly for critical tasks. To guarantee the correctness of WSNs is important, but highly nontrivial due to the distributed nature. In this work, we present an automatic approach to directly verify WSNs built with TinyOS applications implemented in the NesC language. To achieve this target, we firstly define a set of formal operational semantics for most of the NesC language structures for the first time. This allows us to capture the behaviors of sensors by labelled transition systems (LTSs), which are the underlying semantic models of NesC programs. Secondly, WSNs are modeled …
What Is Behind The Asset Growth And Investment Growth Anomalies?, Fangjian Fu
What Is Behind The Asset Growth And Investment Growth Anomalies?, Fangjian Fu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Existing studies show that firm asset and investment growth predict cross-sectional stock returns. Firms that shrink their assets or investments subsequently earn higher returns than firms that expand their assets or investments. I show that the superior returns of the low asset and investment growth portfolios are due to the omission of delisting returns in CRSP monthly stock return file and that the poor returns of the high asset and investment growth portfolios are largely driven by the subsample of firms that have issued large amounts of debt or equity in the previous year. Controlling for the effects of the …
Tilted Nonparametric Estimation Of Volatility Functions With Empirical Applications, Ke-Li Xu, Peter C. B. Phillips
Tilted Nonparametric Estimation Of Volatility Functions With Empirical Applications, Ke-Li Xu, Peter C. B. Phillips
Research Collection School Of Economics
This article proposes a novel positive nonparametric estimator of the conditional variance function without reliance on logarithmic or other transformations. The estimator is based on an empirical likelihood modification of conventional local-level nonparametric regression applied to squared residuals of the mean regression. The estimator is shown to be asymptotically equivalent to the local linear estimator in the case of unbounded support but, unlike that estimator, is restricted to be nonnegative in finite samples. It is fully adaptive to the unknown conditional mean function. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the finite-sample performance of the estimator. Two empirical applications are reported. One …

The Informal Economy And Bribery In North Korea, Byung-Yeon Kim, Yumi Koh
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper uses the data of 227 North Korean refugees who have settled in South Korea to investigate the relationship between working in the informal economy (market component of the economy) and bribe-giving, and between bribe-giving and the number of hours worked in the formal sector (planned component of the economy). The first relationship is positive, and the second relationship is negative. These results imply that widespread informal economy activities in North Korea have been undermining the socialist regime through bribery.
Non-Parametric Regression Under Location Shifts, Peter C. B. Phillips, Liangjun Su
Non-Parametric Regression Under Location Shifts, Peter C. B. Phillips, Liangjun Su
Research Collection School Of Economics
Recent work by Wang and Phillips (2009b, 2011) has shown that ill-posed inverse problems do not arise in non-stationary non-parametric regression and there is no need for non-parametric instrumental variable estimation. Instead, simple Nadaraya–Watson non-parametric estimation of a cointegrating regression equation is consistent irrespective of the endogeneity in the regressor. The present paper shows that some closely related results apply in the case of structural non-parametric regression with independent data when there are continuous location shifts in the regressor. Some interesting cases are discovered where non-parametric regression is consistent, whereas parametric regression is inconsistent even when the true regression functional …

General Construction Of Chameleon All-But-One Trapdoor Functions, Shengli Liu, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Lossy trapdoor functions enable black-box construction of public key encryption (PKE) schemes secure against chosen-ciphertext attack [18]. Recently, a more efficient black-box construction of public key encryption was given in [12] with the help of chameleon all-but-one trapdoor functions (ABO-TDFs).In this paper, we propose a black-box construction for transforming any ABO-TDFs into chameleon ABO-TDFs with the help of chameleon hash functions. Instantiating the proposed general black-box construction of chameleon ABO-TDFs, we can obtain the first chameleon ABO-TDFs based on the Decisional Diffie-Hellman (DDH) assumption.

Verification Of Orchestration Systems Using Compositional Partial Order Reduction, Tian Huat Tan, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Orc is a computation orchestration language which is designed to specify computational services, such as distributed communication and data manipulation, in a concise and elegant way. Four concurrency primitives allow programmers to orchestrate site calls to achieve a goal, while managing timeouts, priorities, and failures. To guarantee the correctness of Orc model, effective verification support is desirable. Orc has a highly concurrent semantics which introduces the problem of state-explosion to search-based verification methods like model checking. In this paper, we present a new method, called Compositional Partial Order Reduction (CPOR), which aims to provide greater state-space reduction than classic partial …
Cooperative Reinforcement Learning In Topology-Based Multi-Agent Systems, Dan Xiao, Ah-Hwee Tan
Cooperative Reinforcement Learning In Topology-Based Multi-Agent Systems, Dan Xiao, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Topology-based multi-agent systems (TMAS), wherein agents interact with one another according to their spatial relationship in a network, are well suited for problems with topological constraints. In a TMAS system, however, each agent may have a different state space, which can be rather large. Consequently, traditional approaches to multi-agent cooperative learning may not be able to scale up with the complexity of the network topology. In this paper, we propose a cooperative learning strategy, under which autonomous agents are assembled in a binary tree formation (BTF). By constraining the interaction between agents, we effectively unify the state space of individual …

Influence Diagrams With Memory States: Representation And Algorithms, Xiaojian Wu, Akshat Kumar, Shlomo Zilberstein
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Influence diagrams (IDs) offer a powerful framework for decision making under uncertainty, but their applicability has been hindered by the exponential growth of runtime and memory usage--largely due to the no-forgetting assumption. We present a novel way to maintain a limited amount of memory to inform each decision and still obtain near-optimal policies. The approach is based on augmenting the graphical model with memory states that represent key aspects of previous observations--a method that has proved useful in POMDP solvers. We also derive an efficient EM-based message-passing algorithm to compute the policy. Experimental results show that this approach produces highquality …

Linear Obfuscation To Combat Symbolic Execution, Zhi Wang, Jiang Ming, Chunfu Jia, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trigger-based code (malicious in many cases, but not necessarily) only executes when specific inputs are received. Symbolic execution has been one of the most powerful techniques in discovering such malicious code and analyzing the trigger condition. We propose a novel automatic malware obfuscation technique to make analysis based on symbolic execution difficult. Unlike previously proposed techniques, the obfuscated code from our tool does not use any cryptographic operations and makes use of only linear operations which symbolic execution is believed to be good in analyzing. The obfuscated code incorporates unsolved conjectures and adds a simple loop to the original code, …

Using a large sample of U.S. firms for the period 1993-2009, we provide evidence that the sensitivity of a chief financial officer's (CFO) option portfolio value to stock price is significantly and positively related to the firm's future stock price crash risk. In contrast, we find only weak evidence of the positive impact of chief executive officer option sensitivity on crash risk. Finally, we find that the link between CFO option sensitivity and crash risk is more pronounced for firms in non-competitive industries and those with a high level of financial leverage.

Data consumers are provided with easy online access to information on the World Wide Web. However, consumers face information quality problems in their quest for information. This paper focuses on the development of an instrument to measure information quality (IQ) on the World Wide Web from a user's perspective. Based on a comprehensive review of the literature, 20 important IQ frameworks were identified. These models, though varied in their approach and application, share a number of characteristics regarding their classifications of the attributes of quality. The paper identifies common dimensions that exist across the existing IQ frameworks in the literature …

The use of 3D models for progressive transmission and broadcasting applications is an interesting challenge due to the nature and complexity of such content. In this paper, a new image format for the representation of 3D progressive model is proposed. The powerful spectral analysis is combined with the state of art Geometry Image(GI) to encode static 3D models into spectral geometry images(SGI) for robust 3D shape representation. Based on the 3D model's surface characteristics, SGI separated the geometrical image into low and high frequency layers to achieve effective Level of Details(LOD) modeling. For SGI, the connectivity data of the model …

Information Disclosure In Global Energy Governance, Ann Florini, Saleena Saleem
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The lack of global consensus on how to deal with complex energy governance challenges has led to the emergence of information disclosure initiatives as governance tools in and of themselves. This article assesses the effectiveness of disclosure mechanisms as tools of energy governance by looking at the motivations and desired outcomes behind a series of disclosure-based initiatives in the energy sector, namely: making energy markets work more efficiently; inducing corporations to internalize their climate change externalities; and improving democratic processes that lead to better energy governance outcomes. The disclosure initiatives assessed in this article adopt different strategies to achieve their …

Nowadays, more and more multimedia websites appear in social network. It brings some security problems, such as privacy, piracy, disclosure of sensitive contents and so on. Aiming at copyright protection, the copy detection technology of multimedia contents becomes a hot topic. In our previous work, a new computer-based copyright control system used to detect the media has been proposed. Based on this system, this paper proposes an improved media feature matching measure and an entropy based copy detection method. The Levenshtein Distance was used to enhance the matching degree when using for feature matching measure in copy detection. For entropy …

Mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous. People use their phones as a personal concierge discovering and making decisions anywhere and anytime. Understanding user intent on the go therefore becomes important for task completion on the phone. While existing efforts have predominantly focused on understanding the explicit user intent expressed by a textual or voice query, this paper presents an approach to context-aware and personalized entity recommendation which understands the implicit intent without any explicit user input on the phone. The approach, highly motivated from a large-scale mobile click-through analysis, is able to rank both the entity types and the entities within …

The Validity And Incremental Validity Of Knowledge Tests, Low-Fidelity Simulations, And High-Fidelity Simulations For Predicting Job Performance In Advanced-Level High-Stakes Selection, Filip Lievens, Fiona Patterson
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In high-stakes selection among candidates with considerable domain-specific knowledge and experience, investigations of whether high-fidelity simulations (assessment centers; ACs) have incremental validity over low-fidelity simulations (situational judgment tests; SJTs) are lacking. Therefore, this article integrates research on the validity of knowledge tests, low-fidelity simulations, and high-fidelity simulations in advanced-level high-stakes settings. A model and hypotheses of how these 3 predictors work in combination to predict job performance were developed. In a sample of 196 applicants, all 3 predictors were significantly related to job performance. Both the SJT and the AC had incremental validity over the knowledge test. Moreover, the AC …

Entry Into New Niches: The Effects Of Firm Age And The Expansion Of Technological Capabilities On Innovative Output And Impact, Reddi Kotha, Yangfeng Zheng, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We provide evidence that young firms systematically differ from older firms in their innovative output when they enter ‘new to the firm’ technological niches. We analyze data from 128 biotechnology firms since their inception and track these firms over time. Our analyses reveal that the organizational age at which the firm branches into new technological niches significantly influences its innovative activity. We refine the focus of the extant literature by separately examining the effects of branching on the quantity of innovative output and the impact that this output has on the technology domain. Subsequent to branching into new niches, we …

Publishing individual specific microdata has serious privacy implications. The k-anonymity model has been proposed to prevent identity disclosure from microdata, and the work on ℓ-diversity and t-closeness attempt to address attribute disclosure. However, most current work only deal with publishing microdata with a single sensitive attribute (SA), whereas real life scenarios often involve microdata with multiple SAs that may be multi-valued. This paper explores the issue of attribute disclosure in such scenarios. We propose a method called CODIP (Complete Disjoint Projections) that outlines a general solution to deal with the shortcomings in a naïve approach. We also introduce two measures, …

Towards Ground Truthing Observations In Gray-Box Anomaly Detection, Jiang Ming, Haibin Zhang, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Anomaly detection has been attracting interests from researchers due to its advantage of being able to detect zero-day exploits. A gray-box anomaly detector first observes benign executions of a computer program and then extracts reliable rules that govern the normal execution of the program. However, such observations from benign executions are not necessarily true evidences supporting the rules learned. For example, the observation that a file descriptor being equal to a socket descriptor should not be considered supporting a rule governing the two values to be the same. Ground truthing such observations is a difficult problem since it is not …

Knowledge management plays an important role in many software organizations. Knowledge can be captured and distributed using a variety of media, including traditional help files and manuals, videos, technical articles, wikis, and blogs. In recent years, web-based community portals have emerged as an important mechanism for combining various communication channels. However, there is little advice on how they can be effectively deployed in a software project. In this paper, we present a first study of a community portal used by a closed source software project. Using grounded theory, we develop a model that characterizes documentation artifacts along several dimensions, such as …

A normal certificateless cryptosystem can only achieve KGC trust level 2 according to the trust hierarchy defined by Girault. Although in the seminal paper introducing certificateless cryptography, Al-Riyami and Paterson introduced a binding technique to lift the KGC trust level of their certificateless schemes to level 3, many subsequent work on certificateless cryptography just focused on the constructions of normal certificateless schemes, and a formal study on the general applicability of the binding technique to these existing schemes is still missing. In this paper, to address the KGC trust level issue, we introduce the notion of Key Dependent Certificateless Cryptography …
