With A Little Help From My (Undesirable) Friends: The Influence Of Sex Ratio On Preferences For The Relative Mate Value Of Friends, Bryan Kwok Cheng Choy

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The present research examined whether who men and women choose to befriend reflects evolved desires for managing intrasexual competition for mates. It is reasoned that individuals should display a stronger preference for others of relatively lower mate value to oneself when the local ecology exhibits signs of intense intrasexual competition (when the operational sex ratio [OSR] is most unfavorable). Conversely, an unfavorable OSR was expected to reduce the desirability of others of similar or higher mate value. The possibility that this effect would be sex differentiated was also examined. In particular, it was reasoned that these predictions should hold for …

Design Thinking Intervention In Healthcare, Mohammed Ali Alshehri Jun 2020

Design Thinking Intervention In Healthcare, Mohammed Ali Alshehri

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The healthcare industry is currently experiencing numerous challenges. Lack of skilled and innovative practitioners in healthcare organizations disrupts operational functions, administration, and service delivery. Dentistry is full of complex problems. There is currently a significant gap between the desired solutions dental providers offer to solve these problems and the actual outcomes. So, dental providers must rethink their approach to solving healthcare problems. One of the desirable approaches is design thinking.

Application of design thinking in business and healthcare has demonstrated improved results. In this research, the objective was to investigate the application of design thinking in dentistry and its effects …

Examining The Impact Of It Investment On Insurer Productivity: A Bootstrapped Malmquist Frontier Analysis Approach, Jee Yuen Yew Jun 2020

Examining The Impact Of It Investment On Insurer Productivity: A Bootstrapped Malmquist Frontier Analysis Approach, Jee Yuen Yew

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This paper attempts to examine productivity changes of insurance companies in Singapore as represented by bootstrapped Malmquist indices, generated from a data envelopment analysis (DEA)-based frontier analysis, and attribute these changes to an increasing investment in information technology infrastructure and equipment, and increasing investment in staff enhancement. Through this analysis, the author finds that there has been a general increase in productivity and efficiency from 2011 – 2017, as seen from changes in the kernel density functions of productivity change between the two periods. The author also finds, through running a panel tobit regression model, that there is a positive …

This article presents the eqregsel command for implementing the estimationand bootstrap inference of sample selection models via extremal quantile regression. The command estimates a semiparametric sample selection model withoutinstrument or large support regressor, and outputs the point estimates of the ho-mogenous linear coefficients, their bootstrap standard errors, as well as the p-valuefor a specification test.

Is Predicted Data A Viable Alternative To Real Data?, Tomoki Fujii, Roy Van Der Weide Jun 2020

Is Predicted Data A Viable Alternative To Real Data?, Tomoki Fujii, Roy Van Der Weide

Research Collection School Of Economics

It is costly to collect the household- and individual-level data that underlies official estimates of poverty and health. For this reason, developing countries often do not have the budget to update their estimates of poverty and health regularly, even though these estimates are most needed there. One way to reduce the financial burden is to substitute some of the real data with predicted data. An approach referred to as double sampling collects the expensive outcome variable for a sub-sample only while collecting the covariates used for prediction for the full sample. The objective of this study is to determine if …

Deviance Information Criterion For Latent Variable Models And Misspecified Models, Yong Li, Jun Yu, Tao Zeng Jun 2020

Deviance Information Criterion For Latent Variable Models And Misspecified Models, Yong Li, Jun Yu, Tao Zeng

Research Collection School Of Economics

Deviance information criterion (DIC) has been widely used for Bayesian model comparison, especially after Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is used to estimate candidate models. This paper first studies the problem of using DIC to compare latent variable models when DIC is calculated from the conditional likelihood. In particular, it is shown that the conditional likelihood approach undermines theoretical underpinnings of DIC. A new version of DIC, namely DICL, is proposed to compare latent variable models. The large sample properties of DICL are studied. A frequentist justification of DICL is provided. Like AIC, DICL provides an asymptotically unbiased estimator to …

Identifying Latent Grouped Patterns In Conintegrated Panels, Wenxin Huang, Sainan Jin, Liangjun Su Jun 2020

Identifying Latent Grouped Patterns In Conintegrated Panels, Wenxin Huang, Sainan Jin, Liangjun Su

Research Collection School Of Economics

We consider a panel cointegration model with latent group structures that allows for heterogeneous long-run relationships across groups. We extend Su, Shi, and Phillips (2016, Econometrica 84(6), 2215-2264) classifier-Lasso (C-Lasso) method to the nonstationary panels and allow for the presence of endogeneity in both the stationary and nonstationary regressors in the model. In addition, we allow the dimension of the stationary regressors to diverge with the sample size. We show that we can identify the individuals' group membership and estimate the group-specific long-run cointegrated relationships simultaneously. We demonstrate the desirable property of uniform classification consistency and the oracle properties of …

Efficiency, Quality Of Forecasts And Radner Equilibria, Shurojit Chatterji, Atsushi Kajii Jun 2020

Efficiency, Quality Of Forecasts And Radner Equilibria, Shurojit Chatterji, Atsushi Kajii

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study a simple two period economy with no uncertainty and complete markets where agents trade based on forecasts about the second period spot price. We propose as our solution concept a set of forecasts with the following properties: there exist (heterogenous) forecasts contained in this set that lead to efficient allocations, the set contains only those forecasts that correspond to some efficient equilibrium, and Önally that the forecasts assign positive probability to the actual market clearing spot price. We call such a set of prices an efficient equilibrium with ambiguity, and interpret it as a generalization of Radner equilibrium …

Cc2vec: Distributed Representations Of Code Changes, Thong Hoang, Hong Jin Kang, Julia Lawall, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing work on software patches often use features specific to a single task. These works often rely on manually identified features, and human effort is required to identify these features for each task. In this work, we propose CC2Vec, a neural network model that learns a representation of code changes guided by their accompanying log messages, which represent the semantic intent of the code changes. CC2Vec models the hierarchical structure of a code change with the help of the attention mechanism and usesmultiple comparison functions to identify the differences between the removed and added code. To evaluate if CC2Vec can …

Minding Other People's Business: Community Attachment And Anticipated Negative Emotion In An Extended Norm Activation Model, Sonny Rosenthal, Kang Leng Ho Jun 2020

Minding Other People's Business: Community Attachment And Anticipated Negative Emotion In An Extended Norm Activation Model, Sonny Rosenthal, Kang Leng Ho

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This study extended the norm activation model in the context of litter reduction to explain self-managing (e.g., avoiding littering) and other-managing (e.g., picking up litter) behaviors. Although those kinds of behaviors are conceptually distinct, prior research has not explained differences in their prediction. This study addresses that gap by considering the roles of community attachment and anticipated negative emotion in other-managing behavior. The addition of those predictors creates a second explanatory pathway in the norm activation model. Results showed awareness of consequences, ascription of responsibility, and community attachment predicted personal norm (R2 = 0.54), which predicted self-managing behavior (R2 = …

Fin Vs. Tech: Are Trust And Knowledge Creation Key Ingredients In Fintech Start-Up Emergence And Financing?, Theodor Florian Cojoianu, Gordon L. Clark, Andreas G. F. Hoepner, Vladimir. Pažitka, Dariusz. Wójcik Jun 2020

Fin Vs. Tech: Are Trust And Knowledge Creation Key Ingredients In Fintech Start-Up Emergence And Financing?, Theodor Florian Cojoianu, Gordon L. Clark, Andreas G. F. Hoepner, Vladimir. Pažitka, Dariusz. Wójcik

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

We investigate how the emergence of fintech start-ups and their financing is shaped by regional knowledge creation and lack of trust in financial services incumbents across 21 OECD countries, 226 regions and over the 2007–2014 period. We find that knowledge generated in the IT sector is much more salient for fostering new fintech start-ups than knowledge generated in the financial services sector. Additionally, the importance of new knowledge created in the financial services sector (IT sector) increases (decreases) as fintech start-ups grow and seek financing. When the level of trust in financial services incumbents falls within a region, this is …

Disparity-Aware Domain Adaptation In Stereo Image Restoration, Bo Yan, Chenxi Ma, Bahetiyaer Bare, Weimin Tan, Steven C. H. Hoi Jun 2020

Disparity-Aware Domain Adaptation In Stereo Image Restoration, Bo Yan, Chenxi Ma, Bahetiyaer Bare, Weimin Tan, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Under stereo settings, the problems of disparity estimation, stereo magnification and stereo-view synthesis have gathered wide attention. However, the limited image quality brings non-negligible difficulties in developing related applications and becomes the main bottleneck of stereo images. To the best of our knowledge, stereo image restoration is rarely studied. Towards this end, this paper analyses how to effectively explore disparity information, and proposes a unified stereo image restoration framework. The proposed framework explicitly learn the inherent pixel correspondence between stereo views and restores stereo image with the cross-view information at image and feature level. A Feature Modulation Dense Block (FMDB) …

Don't Hit Me! Glass Detection In Real-World Scenes, Haiyang Mei, Xin Yang, Yang Wang, Yuanyuan Liu, Shengfeng He, Qiang Zhang, Xiaopeng Wei, Rynson W.H. Lau Jun 2020

Don't Hit Me! Glass Detection In Real-World Scenes, Haiyang Mei, Xin Yang, Yang Wang, Yuanyuan Liu, Shengfeng He, Qiang Zhang, Xiaopeng Wei, Rynson W.H. Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Glass is very common in our daily life. Existing computer vision systems neglect it and thus may have severe consequences, e.g., a robot may crash into a glass wall. However, sensing the presence of glass is not straightforward. The key challenge is that arbitrary objects/scenes can appear behind the glass, and the content within the glass region is typically similar to those behind it. In this paper, we propose an important problem of detecting glass from a single RGB image. To address this problem, we construct a large-scale glass detection dataset (GDD) and design a glass detection network, called GDNet, …

Transferring And Regularizing Prediction For Semantic Segmentation, Yiheng Zhang, Zhaofan Qiu, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Dong Liu, Tao Mei Jun 2020

Transferring And Regularizing Prediction For Semantic Segmentation, Yiheng Zhang, Zhaofan Qiu, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Dong Liu, Tao Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic segmentation often requires a large set of images with pixel-level annotations. In the view of extremely expensive expert labeling, recent research has shown that the models trained on photo-realistic synthetic data (e.g., computer games) with computer-generated annotations can be adapted to real images. Despite this progress, without constraining the prediction on real images, the models will easily overfit on synthetic data due to severe domain mismatch. In this paper, we novelly exploit the intrinsic properties of semantic segmentation to alleviate such problem for model transfer. Specifically, we present a Regularizer of Prediction Transfer (RPT) that imposes the intrinsic properties …

Cookgan: Causality Based Text-To-Image Synthesis, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo Jun 2020

Cookgan: Causality Based Text-To-Image Synthesis, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper addresses the problem of text-to-image synthesis from a new perspective, i.e., the cause-and-effect chain in image generation. Causality is a common phenomenon in cooking. The dish appearance changes depending on the cooking actions and ingredients. The challenge of synthesis is that a generated image should depict the visual result of action-on-object. This paper presents a new network architecture, CookGAN, that mimics visual effect in causality chain, preserves fine-grained details and progressively upsamples image. Particularly, a cooking simulator sub-network is proposed to incrementally make changes to food images based on the interaction between ingredients and cooking methods over a …

Exploring Category-Agnostic Clusters For Open-Set Domain Adaptation, Yingwei Pan, Ting Yao, Yehao Li, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tao Mei Jun 2020

Exploring Category-Agnostic Clusters For Open-Set Domain Adaptation, Yingwei Pan, Ting Yao, Yehao Li, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tao Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unsupervised domain adaptation has received significant attention in recent years. Most of existing works tackle the closed-set scenario, assuming that the source and target domains share the exactly same categories. In practice, nevertheless, a target domain often contains samples of classes unseen in source domain (i.e., unknown class). The extension of domain adaptation from closedset to such open-set situation is not trivial since the target samples in unknown class are not expected to align with the source. In this paper, we address this problem by augmenting the state-of-the-art domain adaptation technique, Self-Ensembling, with category-agnostic clusters in target domain. Specifically, we …

Mnemonics Training: Multi-Class Incremental Learning Without Forgetting, Yaoyao Liu, Yuting Su, An-An Liu, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun Jun 2020

Mnemonics Training: Multi-Class Incremental Learning Without Forgetting, Yaoyao Liu, Yuting Su, An-An Liu, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-Class Incremental Learning (MCIL) aims to learn new concepts by incrementally updating a model trained on previous concepts. However, there is an inherent trade-off to effectively learning new concepts without catastrophic forgetting of previous ones. To alleviate this issue, it has been proposed to keep around a few examples of the previous concepts but the effectiveness of this approach heavily depends on the representativeness of these examples. This paper proposes a novel and automatic framework we call mnemonics, where we parameterize exemplars and make them optimizable in an end-to-end manner. We train the framework through bilevel optimizations, i.e., model-level and …

Is Using Deep Learning Frameworks Free?: Characterizing Technical Debt In Deep Learning Frameworks, Jiakun Liu, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, Emad Shihab, David Lo, Shanping Li Jun 2020

Is Using Deep Learning Frameworks Free?: Characterizing Technical Debt In Deep Learning Frameworks, Jiakun Liu, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, Emad Shihab, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers of deep learning applications (shortened as application developers) commonly use deep learning frameworks in their projects. However, due to time pressure, market competition, and cost reduction, developers of deep learning frameworks (shortened as framework developers) often have to sacrifice software quality to satisfy a shorter completion time. This practice leads to technical debt in deep learning frameworks, which results in the increasing burden to both the application developers and the framework developers in future development. In this paper, we analyze the comments indicating technical debt (self-admitted technical debt) in 7 of the most popular open-source deep learning frameworks. Although framework …

Gpu-Accelerated Subgraph Enumeration On Partitioned Graphs, Wentian Guo, Yuchen Li, Mo Sha, Bingsheng He, Xiaokui Xiao, Kian-Lee Tan Jun 2020

Gpu-Accelerated Subgraph Enumeration On Partitioned Graphs, Wentian Guo, Yuchen Li, Mo Sha, Bingsheng He, Xiaokui Xiao, Kian-Lee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Subgraph enumeration is important for many applications such as network motif discovery and community detection. Recent works utilize graphics processing units (GPUs) to parallelize subgraph enumeration, but they can only handle graphs that fit into the GPU memory. In this paper, we propose a new approach for GPU-accelerated subgraph enumeration that can efficiently scale to large graphs beyond the GPU memory. Our approach divides the graph into partitions, each of which fits into the GPU memory. The GPU processes one partition at a time and searches the matched subgraphs of a given pattern (i.e., instances) within the partition as in …

An Extended Framework Of Privacy-Preserving Computation With Flexible Access Control, Wenxiu Ding, Rui Hu, Zheng Yan, Xinren Qian, Robert H. Deng, Laurence T. Yang, Mianxiong Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud computing offers various services based on outsourced data by utilizing its huge volume of resources and great computation capability. However, it also makes users lose full control over their data. To avoid the leakage of user data privacy, encrypted data are preferred to be uploaded and stored in the cloud, which unfortunately complicates data analysis and access control. In particular, few existing works consider the fine-grained access control over the computational results from ciphertexts. Though our previous work proposed a framework to support several basic computations (such as addition, multiplication and comparison) with flexible access control, privacy-preserving division calculations …

Mate Preference Priorities In The East And West: A Cross-Cultural Test Of The Mate Preference Priority Model, Andrew G. Thomas, Peter K. Jonason, Jesse D. Blackburn, Leif E. O. Kennair, Rob Lowe, John Malouff, Steve Stewart-Williams, Danielle Sulikowski, Norman P. Li Jun 2020

Mate Preference Priorities In The East And West: A Cross-Cultural Test Of The Mate Preference Priority Model, Andrew G. Thomas, Peter K. Jonason, Jesse D. Blackburn, Leif E. O. Kennair, Rob Lowe, John Malouff, Steve Stewart-Williams, Danielle Sulikowski, Norman P. Li

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Objective: Mate choice involves trading-off several preferences. Research on this process tends to examine mate preference prioritization in homogenous samples using a small number of traits and thus provide little insight into whether prioritization patterns reflect a universal human nature. This study examined whether prioritization patterns, and their accompanying sex differences, are consistent across Eastern and Western cultures. Method: In the largest test of the mate preference priority model to date, we asked an international sample of participants (N = 2,477) to design an ideal long-term partner by allocating mate dollars to eight traits using three budgets. Unlike previous versions …

State-Owned Enterprises And Threats To National Security Under Investment Treaties, Mark Mclaughlin Jun 2020

State-Owned Enterprises And Threats To National Security Under Investment Treaties, Mark Mclaughlin

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The internationalization of investment by State-owned enterprises is driving the evolution of foreign investment regulation throughout the Western world. National security lies at the heart of host State concerns, yet the contours of the concept remain indistinct. Consequently, State-owned enterprises are subject to differential legal standards that can be vague and ambiguous. This article considers whether, and under what circumstances, host State security measures targeting State-owned enterprises comply with obligations under investment treaties. Provision for pre-establishment national treatment and security exceptions will be crucial in balancing the autonomy afforded to host States to protect their national security, and guarding State-owned …

Judicial Precedent In Emerging Constitutional Jurisdictions: Formulating A Doctrine Of Constitutional Stare Decisis For Singapore, Kenny Chng

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Judicial precedents in constitutional law raiseunique stare decisis considerations. While they are authoritative pronouncementson the proper interpretation of the Constitution and are thus an essentialcomponent of constitutional law, they are also merely judicial precedents – andthus susceptible to being overturned. These considerations have been thesubject of a well-developed body of literature, especially in the context of USSupreme Court constitutional precedents.Yet, despite being a constitutional supremacy, little attention has beenpaid in Singapore to the question of the proper judicial approach towardsconstitutional precedents. This paper aims to address this issue. It will discernthe de facto principles that Singapore judges have thus far …

Do Coaches In The National Basketball Association Actually Display Racial Bias? Replication And Extension, Gokhan Ertug, Massimo Maoret Jun 2020

Do Coaches In The National Basketball Association Actually Display Racial Bias? Replication And Extension, Gokhan Ertug, Massimo Maoret

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We replicate and extend empirical evidence that has been interpreted as an indication of coaches’ racial bias in the National Basketball Association (NBA) by Schroffel and Magee (2012) and Zhang (2017; 2019). After replicating the published results, we extend them by modeling coaches’ decisions of “resting the starters,” a common tactical decision based on players’ quality and not on their race, thus exploring whether this tactic may provide an alternative explanation for associations that might thus far have been taken to indicate racial bias. Our results show that, after empirically accounting for “resting the starters,” the magnitude of associations that …

It's Lonely At The Bottom (Too): The Effects Of Experienced Powerlessness On Social Closeness And Disengagement, Trevor A. Foulk, Irene E. De Pater, Michael Schaerer, Christilene Du Plessis, Randy Lee, Amir Erez Jun 2020

It's Lonely At The Bottom (Too): The Effects Of Experienced Powerlessness On Social Closeness And Disengagement, Trevor A. Foulk, Irene E. De Pater, Michael Schaerer, Christilene Du Plessis, Randy Lee, Amir Erez

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although powerlessness is a pervasive experience for employees, prior social power research has predominantly focused on consequences of powerfulness. This has led to contradictory predictions for how experienced powerlessness influences employees’ social perceptions and behaviors. To resolve this theoretical tension, we build on Social Distance Theory (Magee & Smith, 2013) to develop a theoretical model suggesting that experienced powerlessness reduces social closeness and subsequently causes social disengagement behaviors both at work (reduced helping, increased interaction avoidance) and at home (increased withdrawal). Our model also elucidates the processes that cause powerlessness to reduce social closeness, demonstrating that employees’ affiliation motive and …

Cross-Border Acquisitions And Employment Policies, Hao Liang, Luc Renneboog, Cara Vansteenkiste Jun 2020

Cross-Border Acquisitions And Employment Policies, Hao Liang, Luc Renneboog, Cara Vansteenkiste

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using novel firm-level data on employment quality in an international sample of M&A deals, this paper investigates the cost-benefit trade-off faced by acquirers when providing generous employment policies. We find that shareholders react more positively to deal announcements by acquirers providing generous employee incentives when the deal is domestic, but negatively when the deal is cross-border. These effects are primarily driven by the provision of monetary incentives and are strongest for firms in skilled industries. We argue that generous employment policies increase synergy gains and reduce labor adjustment costs in a domestic takeover. In cross-border deals, however, costs associated with …

Regulatory Approaches To Consumer Protection In The Financial Sector And Beyond: Toward A Smart Disclosure Regime?, Nydia Remolina, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez, Yvonne Ai-Chi Loh, David R. Hardoon May 2020

Regulatory Approaches To Consumer Protection In The Financial Sector And Beyond: Toward A Smart Disclosure Regime?, Nydia Remolina, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez, Yvonne Ai-Chi Loh, David R. Hardoon

Centre for AI & Data Governance (2019-2025)

Traditionally, consumer and data protection policies evolved from issues of consent and information disclosure. The purpose of these regulatory approaches is the protection of consumers by reducing some contracting failures, such as asymmetries of information and a lower bargaining power, especially in transactions involving complex issues such as financial products and sensitive personal data. In the past, regulators have responded to privacy and consumer protection by adopting what this paper refers to as an “imperfectly informed regime”, in which consumers do not receive full information about the risks associated with their decisions, even if they are still protected through a …
