Seibert, MSN, RN, DNP Student, Elizabeth Bonham, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, Faculty Mentor. Background of the Problem: An estimated 1.2 million RN job openings will occur by 2020. Dedicated Education Units (DEUs) have demonstrated the ability to increase clinical placements and thereby increase nursing school enrollment. As an innovative academic practice partnership, DEUs utilize the expertise of staff nurses to instruct students in patient care. However, staff nurses do not inherently have knowledge of teaching strategies while instructing undergraduate nursing students in the clinical environment; …
Correlates Of Lifestyle Physical Activity In Older Latinos, Shannon Halloway
Correlates Of Lifestyle Physical Activity In Older Latinos, Shannon Halloway
Leadership Connection
Aims: The purpose of this secondary analysis is to identify the background (demographics, acculturation, environment, current health, and light physical activity [PA]) and intrapersonal (self-efficacy) correlates of moderate/vigorous PA in older community-dwelling Latinos. Despite growing numbers, relatively poor overall health status, and low levels of PA, few studies have examined the impact of these characteristics on PA in older Latinos. Current correlate studies have not included environment and social-cognitive variables in the study of older Latinos, and rarely utilized both subjective and objective measures of PA.
Methods: The design was descriptive cross-sectional. Participants were: self-identified Latinos, without disability, a score …

There is no formal strangulation assessment taught to health care practitioners resulting in missed injuries from strangulation and missed opportunities to intervene before violence can escalate in lethality.
The purpose of this project is to develop an educational program for health care practitioners on identifying Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and strangulation, assessing strangulation injuries, how to complete medico-legal documentation of the same and ethical intervention for the family affected by IPV.
IPV affects almost one third of families in the United States (US), and an estimated three women die in the US every day as a result of IPV. Women …

This quality-improvement project involved 16 adult inpatient units at Duke University Hospital and used CDS as an intervention to document fall risk assessments and, for patients at high risk, fall prevention plans of care. Goals of the project included 1) improving documentation of fall risk assessments upon patient admission and every 12-hour nursing work shift, 2) improving documentation of fall prevention plans …

Once lymphedema (LE) develops it becomes a chronic condition requiring medical and therapeutic support. The purpose of this scholarly activity is to create then study an algorithm to assist the patient in self-care. Knowledgeable nurses, physicians …

It is estimated that 1,960 pediatric patients will die of cancer in the United States in 2014 and approximately 15,780 new diagnoses will be made (Ward, DeSantis, Robbins, Kohler, & Jamal, 2014, p. 75). Optimal care of the community client, including those considered senior or elderly has become a critical consideration of the Canadian health care system. As such, meeting the health needs of the community client, a fundamental role of home care, has been theoretically improved by home cares adoption of an electronic client assessment and information system known as Resident Assessment Instrument Home Care (RAI-HC), one of the many assessment systems within the inter-RAI suite of assessments. Valid and reliable client outcome data and algorithms are generated from a completed RAI-HC, and available to home care and its assessor coordinators to support …

Amish Communities, Meghan J. Cook
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:
The use of herbal medications or alternative therapies is a practice widely used in many Amish cultures and rural communities. Often times, Amish patients do not view these therapies as medications and do not communicate their use with healthcare providers when seeking traditional healthcare. Other reasons for not disclosing the use of alternative therapies include mistrust among English healthcare providers or fear of being discriminated against. Many of these alternative and complementary therapies and medicines have potential adverse effects and many not be ideal co-therapies with traditional western medicine. Healthcare providers must create …

Advancing Health In The 21st Century Through Spiritually-Guided Health Risk Interceptions (Sghri), Jacquie Marshall
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:
The relationship between spirituality and health is evident in the literature. Additionally, approaches to health promotion guided by spirituality have proven beneficial in various health outcomes. Research has also demonstrated the dire health outcomes for many unhealthy Americans for whom conventional methods of health promotion have been less than favorable. As an intentional shift occurs toward equitable health care, it is important to examine unconventional approaches to health promotion. The concept of Spiritually-guided health risk interceptions (SGHRI) represents such an approach. Spiritually-guided health risk interceptions (SGHRI) provide the impetus-in-action toachieve healthy balance through …

A Model For Coordination Of A Prenatal Care Clinic For Substance Abusing Pregnant Women, Barbara J. Francis
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:
The goal of prenatal care is to optimize pregnancy outcomes. Women who use potentially dangerous substances while pregnant present a special concern because prenatal exposure can cause poor pregnancy outcomes including early childhood behavioral issues, and negative developmental outcomes. Specific effects of individual drugs are difficult to determine with multiple use. In addition, substance use is often accompanied by other risk factors including poverty, stress, depression and lack of social support. Furthermore, risk factors such as exposure to violence and poor nutrition also exist. Perinatal substance abuse has reached critical levels in recent …
