Equipping For Leadership: A Key Mentoring Practice, Aris Eliades, Meghan Weese, Jennifer Huth, Louise D. Jakubik
Leadership Connection
Previous studies examining predictors of mentoring benefits among pediatric staff nurse protegees representing healthcare organizations across 26 states demonstrated that protegee perception of quality was the single best predictor of mentoring benefits. The ability to identify the mentoring practices that predict specific benefits for individual nurses provides a better understanding of how mentoring relationships can be leveraged within health care organizations to promote the mutual benefits of mentoring. The primary aim of the study was to determine if mentoring practices predict mentoring benefits. In addition, the researchers were interested in exploring the relationship between the subscales of mentoring practices and …

Enhancing Health Information Technology, Jolene M. Smith
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:
Enhancing Health Information Technology will assist with having standardized documentation processes, reduction in documentation variations that can cause harm to patients, and allow for a clear and concise story of the patients condition to be told. Nurses have always been on the front line providing direct care in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and home health agencies; therefore it is important to utilize nurses and support staff when creating or designing Enhanced Health Information programs for inputting data, establishing policies for order entry, time and motion studies to reduce clicks when inputting data for …

Effective Leadership For Bsn Recruitment In Rural Communities, Amber Proctor Williams, Karen Worthy
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014: Purpose: With 44% of the United States hospitals located in rural communities, the need for highly educated nurses is critical in these areas where supply has historically been low. Additionally, rural communities typically do not have access to traditional BSN education and those who reside in rural areas tend to have barriers to attaining further education such as competing work-life demands, familial obligations, tuition costs, insufficient preparation for college level work, few successful role models, and a lack of incentive to pursue higher education. This distance-based program offers a traditional baccalaureate education through …

Developing Nursing Agency And Clinical Leadership Through Evidence-Based Practice, Wendy C. Kooken, Ann L. Eckhardt
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Saturday, September 27, 2014:
To eliminate healthcare errors, the Institute of Medicine (2001) challenged organizations and providers to adopt evidence based practice (EBP) and to use advanced technology to safely and effectively care for complex patients. Nurse clinicians may lack the educational preparation to initiate an EBP project and may be less familiar with published empirical studies than nurse academics, but may be more likely to recognize a clinically relevant topic that needs to be researched. Creating mutually beneficial academic-clinical partnerships is one way to advance EBP at the bedside and to assure quality and safety in …

Purpose and Rationale: The purpose of this non-equivalent comparison group post test research study was to measure clinical leadership skills acquisition in two groups of new nurse residents. The skills include the ability to effectively communicate with the health care team, organize data, resolve conflict, manage a patient assignment, and understand patient flow and throughput issues. Purpose: Implement practice change across the healthsystem on the management of patients with a tracheal T Tube during a code.
Methods: The absence of a universal adapter for a tracheal T Tube, in the unit, which is needed to fit and seal onto the ambag during a code, resulted in a catastrophic event, which rendered the patient brain anoxic with resultant persistent and continuous vegetative state. The head and neck units have specific guidelines and standards for the care of a patient with a tracheal T Tube. Included in its onboarding of new …
Work Stress, Zalika Jackson Ladet
Work Stress, Zalika Jackson Ladet
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014: Abstract: It is easy for health care professionals to take care of others yet neglect themselves. Long hours, moral conflict, workload, outside of work drama, coworkers and a list of other stressors makes it easy to fall victim to stress. The first goal is to acknowledge that it exists and that it is affecting the overall quality of life including health, attitude, sleep, and overall well-being. Continuous chronic stress can cause physical health problems and may lead to death. It is important for individuals to acknowledge and become more informed on those things …

Leadership Connection
Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:
As a nursing student I have been able to work side-by-side with the most amazing nurses. The one thing I noted during my clinical experience is that hospitals are minimally staffing their units, and leaving the nurses on the floor with a high patient workload. The staffing crisis is an issue that needs advocacy. In this sense, I would like to become an active member of my profession through my states nurses association and states law policy makers. Therefore, it is my intention to illustrate in this poster presentation the current hospitals staffing …

Leadership Connection
Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:
Each year in the United States, traumatic brain injuries are responsible for more than 200,000 hospital admissions and 3.2 billion dollars spent on healthcare. For children and young adults, TBIs are the primary cause of death and disability. A gap in knowledge exists for the standardized treatment of these patients, which leads to inconsistency in diagnoses necessary for quality patient care. Traumatic brain injuries range from a mild concussion to unresponsive and are scored based on the Glascow Coma Scale (GCS). GCS of 13-15: mild, GCS of 9-12: moderate, GCS of 3-8: severe. …

Translating And Piloting A Community Based Diabetes Prevention Intervention For Vietnamese-Americans, Taylor Annabel Fischer, Cindy Cao, Tam Nguyen
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:
Diabetes is a serious chronic medical condition that has well-established links to devastating health outcomes including heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. A large multicenter randomized clinical control trial (n=3,234) called the Diabetes Prevention Program has demonstrated that a lifestyle intervention focused on modest weight loss through dietary changes and increased physical activity can reduce the development of diabetes by 58%. However efforts to translate these findings to understudied and underserved minority populations, such as Vietnamese Americans, are lacking. Work in this area is important because the diets and cultural norms among …

Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:
Historically, transgender individuals health needs have been largely ignored by American medicine and nursing. It is only within the past few decades that the American Medical Association has acknowledged that transgender-related care is medically necessary and should be covered by insurance. Only in 2014, did the American Psychiatric Association recognize that merely being transgender was not a mental health disorder. The American Nurses Association is silent on any issue directly related to the care of transgender individuals. Transgender-related issues are either completely lacking, or are mentioned only in passing, in most current nursing …
