Caring For Pregnant Smokers: Nurses' Views On Cessation Interventions, Adele M. Spegman, Andrea A. Wary, Leslie A. Laam Sep 2012

Caring For Pregnant Smokers: Nurses' Views On Cessation Interventions, Adele M. Spegman, Andrea A. Wary, Leslie A. Laam

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Smoking during pregnancy is a significant yet modifiable risk that negatively affects maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. Practice standards recommend assessment of tobacco use at each prenatal visit, consistent messages and action plans that relate to women's readiness to quit (ACOG, 2010). Despite public health initiatives and targeted interventions, the 12- 20% of pregnant women who self-report smoking is considered a significant underestimate of the actual prevalence (Shipton, 2009). Little is reported about the outcomes of nursing cessation interventions. This study examined prenatal nurses' views and experiences with smoking cessation.

Methods: The observational design drew on Artinian's Intersystem …

Methods: Concepts of Meleis Theory of Transitions were used to underpin a descriptive correlational study into the readiness of older patients for discharge from hospital to home. A unique combination of variables - demographic characteristics, hospitalisation factors, physical and cognitive functioning and perception of readiness - were used to empirically ascertain older patients' readiness at discharge and statistically test relationships between the variables measured at discharge and older …

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses Project (QSEN, 2011) strives to promote innovation in the creation and evaluation of methods that address student learning of the six Institute of Medicine (IOM) and QSEN competencies, including patient-centered care, teamwork & collaboration, evidence based practice, quality improvement, and safety. With this knowledge, nurses can continuously improve healthcare systems. The college of nursing northern division of this Midwestern academic medical center was created in 2010 to provide a bachelor of science in nursing program in this region. This project will demonstrate that using Lewin's Change Theory and Roger's Theory of Diffusion of Innovation as a framework for this change, …

Nursing Education And Redesigned Discharge Process: Effects On Congestive Heart Failure Patient Outcomes, Mary L. Gish, Mary F. Rodts, Judy Crouch Sep 2012

Nursing Education And Redesigned Discharge Process: Effects On Congestive Heart Failure Patient Outcomes, Mary L. Gish, Mary F. Rodts, Judy Crouch

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

In a rural community hospital in northern California, greater than fifty percent of all patients are over the age of 64 years. The readmission rate for congestive heart failure (CHF) patients is greater than the rate for the state of California. A decrease in readmission rates has been selected as a three year strategic goal due to the proposed rule from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which will result in a financial discount if the rate of readmissions does not improve. The purpose of the Redesigned Discharge Process Project is to reduce the readmission rate of patients with …

Nurses' Attitudes To Working With Older People In Acute Care, Anne-Marie Mahoney, David Beckett Sep 2012

Nurses' Attitudes To Working With Older People In Acute Care, Anne-Marie Mahoney, David Beckett

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: There is little evidence that factors influencing attitudes to older persons have been investigated (Moyle 2003). Changes to service delivery models within acute health have meant that there has been an increase in Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA) and a decrease in length of stay. Many younger patients are cared for in the community supported with funded programs. Therefore, in-patient populations in acute care are generally older, with greater acuity and increasing co-morbidities. Australia expects an increase from 4.3 million older persons in 2021 to around 6.8million in 2051 (Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, 2008). Aim: The aim of …
