Care Of Veterans: A Patient With Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And Depression In A Peri-Operative Scenario, Stacey Knight, Kelli M. White, Cynthia Stinson, Mary Ford, Lisa Donnelly, Gloria Morris Green

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Care of veterans concepts in nursing curriculum is vital for students in all settings to understand the impact that military service has on health (Johnson et al., 2013). Significant physical health issues, behavioral problems, substance abuse, and harmful effects on families have been associated with and exacerbated by multiple deployments (Seal et al., 2009). Although these behaviors are not typical for most service members after deployment, some are clearly at risk for a variety of psychological, behavioral, and neurological health issues resulting from their experiences during direct combat situations (Bush et al., 2011). With only 25% of all veterans taking …

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

The INACSL Standards of Best Practice SM have identified the importance of ongoing education for facilitators of simulation, especially in the art of debriefing. This rapidly expanding area of simulation challenges educators to develop facilitation methods that evolve alongside the evidence. One of these challenges is the reliance on scripted debriefing questions. While these are helpful for those new to debriefing, the consequence of this narrowed facilitation is the missed opportunity to explore reflection on action and reflection in action. This 4-hour preconference will address the skills needed to facilitate a deeper exploration of actions and comments made by learners …

Combating Workplace Violence: An Evidence-Based Initiative, Diana L. Giordano Aug 2017

Combating Workplace Violence: An Evidence-Based Initiative, Diana L. Giordano

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Multiple factors (e.g., a misperception of what constitutes violence and lack of administrative response following violent events) may precipitate a lack of compliance in hospital employees' reporting patient-to-staff violent incidents, as well as lead to poor staff perception of personal safety and support from hospital administration. Lack of recognition of the true incidence and underreporting of verbal violence, which often precedes physical violence, may contribute to a false sense of security within a healthcare facility.

The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project is to evaluate the effectiveness of instituting an institutional practice policy, implemented on (a) reports of patient-to-staff …

Health Literacy Competencies For Registered Nurses: An E-Delphi Study, Coleen E. Toronto

Dissertations

In the United States, only 12% of adults possess proficient health literacy skills. Individuals with low health literacy skills experience poorer health outcomes. Failure of registered nurses to consider health literacy in communication with patients can significantly affect an individual's ability to understand and therefore, follow health advice. The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion (2004) landmark report recommends that health professionals be trained to effectively communicate with patients with limited health literacy. There is an absence of nurse competencies that explicitly address the needs of patients with low health literacy. Therefore the purpose of …
