Implementation Of A Transition To Practice Program For Newly Licensed Registered Nurses, Christine Courtney
Implementation Of A Transition To Practice Program For Newly Licensed Registered Nurses, Christine Courtney
DNP and Student Works
The reality of nursing at a professional level is often in direct contrast to anything new nurses have experienced during their educational program. This reality shock may lead to increased turnover and decreased job satisfaction. The objective of this project was to determine whether an evidence based transition to practice program initiated at a 285-bed not-for -profit community acute care facility increased confidence and comfort for newly licensed nurses as they transitioned from student nurse to professional nurse. A comparative study was conducted utilizing the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience survey. The survey tool was administered upon starting the transition to …

Using a quantitative, longitudinal pre- and post-intervention design, a convenience sample of students from a Vermont college were recruited to attend seven-weekly, 90-minute AVP meetings where they interacted with dogs in a casual environment, while practicing mindfulness techniques. Participants completed the Perceived Stress Survey (PSS-10) pre-, intra-, and post-intervention to measure student perceived stress; and the Center for the Study of Animal Wellness Pet Bonding Scale® adapted (CSAWPBS) intra-and post-intervention to measure perceived attachment to the dogs. …
Care Transitions: Are Healthcare Organizations Meeting The Needs Of Their Patients?, Dinah Steele
Care Transitions: Are Healthcare Organizations Meeting The Needs Of Their Patients?, Dinah Steele
DNP and Student Works
Acute care healthcare organizations struggle to identify and implement interventions to support the transition of care between hospital and home settings. One organization piloted a quality improvement (QI) project using nurse-led post-discharge telephone consultations to determine their feasibility and effect as a transition of care intervention. The QI pilot was designed to answer the clinical question: does the receipt of nurse-led post-discharge telephone consultations improve patient satisfaction and 30-day readmission rate outcomes? The goals of the pilot were to investigate the feasibility of conducting the intervention, identify transition of care gaps, and evaluate the effect on 30-day readmissions and patient …

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Failure to rescue, either lack of recognition or the lack of appropriate interventions necessary to prevent adverse events, is a costly form of medical error. Bedside nurses - those healthcare professionals who spend the most time with patients - have the greatest responsibility to identify when interventions are needed. With the increases in both the number of retiring nurses and new graduate nurses at the bedside, educating these inexperienced nurses requires specialized training through nurse residency programs (American Nurses Association, 2013). Key areas for development include recognition of changes in patient status, taking initiative, tracking multiple responsibilities, ability to prioritize …

Schizoaffective Disorder: A Simulation In Holistic Care, J. T. Seaman, Linda Olliff, Nancye Mcafee, Leann Chisholm, Kacie S. Calloway
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Nursing students often show a lack of enthusiasm when faced with caring for mental health clients, especially when the student is certain that they want to work in Intensive Care, Emergency, or some other area that has been traditionally considered "medical" in nature. Many issues impact the "I'll never work in psych" attitude. Holistic care is a concept that assists in alleviating the segmented 'medical versus psychiatry' model. Nurses are the most effective when they consider all facets of the person. Since many individuals use Emergency Departments for primary and psychiatric care, the attention to assessing and treating the whole …

"Room Of Horrors": Engaging Interprofessional Students In A Hazards Of Hospitalization Simulation, Margory A. Molloy, Alison Clay
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Hazards of hospitalization are costly and can prolong hospital stays, cause suffering, and even result in death. Medical and nursing students may not be aware of these hazards and may not be involved in quality-improvement projects to reduce them. An interprofessional curriculum on the hazards of hospitalization was taught to graduating medical and nursing students using a "Room of Horrors" (ROH), a simulation in which students are asked to identify safety hazards (e.g., risk factors for spread of infection, hospital-acquired conditions, and medication administration errors). Students completed two Room of Horrors excursions, first as individuals and then in interprofessional teams. …

Assessing Undergraduate Nursing Student Skills In Prioritization And Delegation During Simultaneous Multiple Patient Simulation (Smps)., Beth Beadling
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Caring for more than one patient at a time is an experience that rarely occurs during most undergraduate nursing programs. Learning this complex patient management task typically occurs during the senior or final year of the undergraduate registered nurse educational program, within the clinical environment of an acute or long term care setting. One option to increase the rate of occurrence of this type of learning experience is to assign simultaneous multiple patient simulation (SMPS). Simultaneous multiple patient simulation is a relatively new educational activity and the literature reveals little about the learning outcomes related to SMPS. More research is …
