The Role Of Heat Shock Proteins As Chaperones On Several Human Diseases, Ali A. Mellati
The Role Of Heat Shock Proteins As Chaperones On Several Human Diseases, Ali A. Mellati
Saudi Medical Journal
Some heat shock proteins HSPs, act as molecular chaperones. These and other molecular chaperones that are not HSPs, function in a variety of protein biosynthetic event and protect proteins from the deleterious effects of stressors by stabilizing, and refolding proteins. They assist protein folding, assembly, transport and degradation. Several human diseases such as neurodegeneration, cancer, aging, retinal dystrophy, and inflammation arise from defects HSPs and protein folding. This review demonstrates the chaperones such as properties of HSPs in cellular processes and their implication in different kind of human diseases.

METHODS: Pilgrims attending the 2004 Hajj season were recruited and screened for carriage of MRSA. Standard microbiological techniques were used to screen for the presence of MRSA. RESULTS: Out of 411 individuals screened, 85 (20.6%) were positive for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of which only 6 (1.46 %) were MRSA. Four individuals (4.6%) had the S. aureus organism in both nasal and axillary swabs, while 7 individuals (8%) had the organism in their axillae only. The other 74 individuals …

Isolated Brain Stem Tuberculoma Presenting With One And A Half Syndrome, Mushira Enani, Daifallah J. Al-Nakhli, Eman Bakhsh
Saudi Medical Journal
In this report, we describe a patient with left conjugate gaze palsy and internuclear ophthalmoplegia on the opposite gaze one-and-a-half-syndrome [1 1/2 syndrome]. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed nodular enhancing brain stem lesions. After excluding other potential diseases, tuberculoma was thought to be the underlying etiology. Recovery was achieved 8 weeks after initiation of anti-tuberculous anti-TB therapy. The isolated nature of the tuberculoma and the association with this rare syndrome is highlighted.

Immunological Diagnosis Of Vasculitis, Khalil Abdul-Aziz, Abdul-Aziz Faizal
Saudi Medical Journal
Inflammation of blood vessels, or vasculitis, is caused by a heterogenous group of autoimmune conditions with wide spectrum of systemic, and often overlapping, clinical manifestations. Some of these conditions present acutely and result in major organ9s damage and, therefore, require prompt diagnosis and treatment in order to avoid the high morbidity and mortality that otherwise occur. The clinical immunology laboratory plays a vital role in the diagnosis of vasculitis. Moreover, due to the availability of simple tests, with quick turn around time, immunological findings can provide an early picture of the type of vasculitis involved thereby allowing initiation of prompt …

OBJECTIVE: Viral infection, especially caused by herpes viruses, is now recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised cancer patients. This study aimed at studying seroprevalence of 3 herpes viruses Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV 1 and 2), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). METHODS: We conducted this study on 68 newly diagnosed pediatric patients with ALL presented to the Pediatric Oncology Service of National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, Egypt from November 2001 to June 2003. Progress Towards A Leishmania Vaccine, Khaled S. Tabbara
Saudi Medical Journal
Leishmaniasis is a vector-born protozoan disease. Approximately 12 million individuals are affected worldwide with an estimated annual incidence of 1.5-2 million. Two clinical manifestations are recognized, cutaneous, and visceral, both of which are common in the Middle East. In both forms, infection is chronic, with potential deformities, persistence following cure, and lifelong risk of reactivation. Attempts to develop an effective human Leishmania vaccine have not yet succeeded. Leishmanization, a crude form of live vaccination historically originated in this part of the world. Experimental vaccination has been extensively studied in model animals in the past 2 decades. In this review, major …
