Transport In Non-Ideal, Multi-Species Plasmas, Liam G. Stanton, Scott D. Bergeson, Michael S. Murillo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Charged particle transport plays a critical role in the evolution of high energy-density plasmas. As high-fidelity plasma models continue to incorporate new micro-physics, understanding multi-species plasma transport becomes increasingly important. We briefly outline theoretical challenges of going beyond single-component systems and binary mixtures as well as emphasize the roles experiment, simulation, theory, and modeling can play in advancing this field. The 2020 Division of Plasma Physics mini-conference on transport in Transport in Non-Ideal, Multi-Species Plasmas was organized to bring together a broad community focused on modeling plasmas with many species. This special topics issue of Physics of Plasmas touches on …

Mobile Ka-Band Polarimetric Doppler Radar Observations Of Wildfire Smoke Plumes, Taylor B. Aydell, Craig B. Clements May 2021

Mobile Ka-Band Polarimetric Doppler Radar Observations Of Wildfire Smoke Plumes, Taylor B. Aydell, Craig B. Clements

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Remote sensing techniques have been used to study and track wildfire smoke plume structure and evolution; however, knowledge gaps remain because of the limited availability of observational datasets aimed at understanding finescale fire-atmosphere interactions and plume microphysics. Meteorological radars have been used to investigate the evolution of plume rise in time and space, but highly resolved plume observations are limited. In this study, we present a new mobile millimeter-wave (Ka band) Doppler radar system acquired to sample the fine-scale kinematics and microphysical properties of active wildfire smoke plumes from both wildfires and large prescribed fires. Four field deployments were conducted …

Multifidelity Prediction In Wildfire Spread Simulation: Modeling, Uncertainty Quantification And Sensitivity Analysis, Mario Miguel Valero, Lluís Jofre, Ricardo Torres

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Wildfire behavior predictions typically suffer from significant uncertainty. However, wildfire modeling uncertainties remain largely unquantified in the literature, mainly due to computing constraints. New multifidelity techniques provide a promising opportunity to overcome these limitations. Therefore, this paper explores the applicability of multifidelity approaches to wildland fire spread prediction problems. Using a canonical simulation scenario, we assessed the performance of control variates Monte-Carlo (MC) and multilevel MC strategies, achieving speedups of up to 100x in comparison to a standard MC method. This improvement was leveraged to quantify aleatoric uncertainties and analyze the sensitivity of the fire rate of spread (RoS) to …

The substandard, low quality or predatory journals are the real threat to the publishing industry. It is a challenge to the quality and ethics of publication. The problem grabs the attention of scholarly community when the publisher of an open access journal Gunther Eysenbach, identified a black sheep among open access publishers and journals, since then many experiments were conducted to identify the black sheep and guidelines were issued to avoid them. However, the most substantial work in the field of predatory publishing was performed by Jeffery Beall who came up with a blacklist of predatory OA publishers and journal. …

Organizational Commitment Among University Library Personnel: A Demographic Analysis, Sarah Irherhimena Adegbaye Phd, Idayat Odunola Agboola Phd, Olayinka Buraimo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Employee commitment is considered an important factor in determining the continuing existence of any organization. However, the discourse on whether employee commitment is a derivative of the individual characteristics has remained resolute with limited empirical evidence in the education sector especially with reference to librarianship. This study, therefore, assessed the organizational commitment (affective, continuance, and normative) based on employees’ demographic profiles (age, gender, marital status, and years of experience) in public university libraries in South-South, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted for this study. Validated and reliable copies of a questionnaire were used to gather data from four …

Bibliometric Analysis Of Particle Swarm Optimization Techniques Used To Enhance Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Anupkumar M. Bongale Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a network of tiny wireless sensor nodes. The sensor nodes sense information and transmit the sensed information to a data collection point known as Base Station. WSNs have gained massive popularity due to their incredible benefits, and active research is ongoing for the past two decades. The primary concern with WSN is that the sensor operates on a limited power supply. Due to the nature of applications of WSNs and the hostile environment where the sensors are deployed, providing unlimited power or energy supply is not an option. Hence, the research work mainly focuses on …
