Aquaculture recently became the main source of global seafood production and many countries, including the United States, see potential in marine aquaculture to sustainably fill growing demand. The U.S. supports the majority of its seafood consumption through imports, and therefore identifying bottlenecks to domestic aquaculture growth is a priority at the federal and state level. Yet, one critical aspect that appears not yet addressed is the quality and accessibility of marine aquaculture data. In this study we conducted the first multi-state synthesis and comparison of the most comprehensive suite of species, volume, and value information on U.S. marine aquaculture over …

Retail Investor Attention And The Limit Order Book: Intraday Analysis Of Attention-Based Trading, Artem Meshcheryakov, Drew B. Winters
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We are the first to examine how intraday changes in retail investor attention, measured by hourly Google searches, affect trading activity and informativeness of trades. High levels of Google search activity are followed in the next hour by more intensive trading in all stocks. The increased trading activity is initiated by retail investors as evidenced by the reduced size of new orders. After googling a company, retail investors do not become informed in the traditional sense; rather, they act as noise traders, who mistake noise for information, as their orders are picked off by truly informed traders.

Diel Gene Expression Improves Software Prediction Of Cyanobacterial Operons, Philip Heller
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Cyanobacteria are important participants in global biogeochemical process, but their metabolic processes and genomic functions are incompletely understood. In particular, operon structure, which can provide valuable metabolic and genomic insight, is difficult to determine experimentally, and algorithmic operon predictions probably underestimate actual operon extent. A software method is presented for enhancing current operon predictions by incorporating information from whole-genome time-series expression studies, using a Machine Learning classifier. Results are presented for the marine cyanobacterium Crocosphaera watsonii. A total of 15 operon enhancements are proposed. The source code is publicly available.
