The ultra-diffuse galaxies DF2 and DF4 in the NGC 1052 group share several unusual properties: they both have large sizes1, rich populations of overluminous and large globular clusters2–6, and very low velocity dispersions that indicate little or no dark matter7–10. It has been suggested that these galaxies were formed in the aftermath of high-velocity collisions of gas-rich galaxies11–13, events that resemble the collision that created the bullet cluster14 but on much smaller scales. The gas separates from the dark matter in the collision and subsequent star formation leads to the formation of one or more dark-matter-free galaxies12. Here we show …

Resource Sharing In Academic Libraries: A Tool For Collaboration, Peter Olubunmi Olubiyo, Lydia Mercy Olubiyo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Resource sharing is an important and widely well-known concept in the field of library science. The concept is recognized by the term library networking which deals with the interconnection of libraries so that the participating libraries can share information and resources effectively. It aids to overcome the limitations like enormous cost of purchase, bibliography handling, storage of material etc. as a result of the exponential growth in the information produced. Resource sharing is a solution to optimize library resources. Thus, resource sharing in libraries has become essential in current scenario, and it commands world-wide acceptance. Based on the literature review …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Many proteins display conformational changes resulting from allosteric regulation. Often only a few residues are crucial in conveying these structural and functional allosteric changes. These regions that undergo a significant change in structure upon receiving an input signal, such as molecular recognition, are defined as switch- like regions. Identifying these key residues within switch-like regions can help elucidate the mechanism of allosteric regulation and provide guidance for synthetic regulation. In this study, we combine a novel computational workflow with biochemical methods to identify a switch-like region in the N-terminal domain of human SIRT1 (hSIRT1), a lysine deacetylase that plays important …

Evaluating Pre-Anesthesia Telehealth Visit Outcomes In Cardiac Surgery Patients At A Tertiary-Level, Private, Academic Hospital, Ann Pan

Doctoral Projects

Telehealth is a dynamic, growing field in healthcare. Research has alluded to the potential of telemedicine in the pre-anesthesia area. With infection risk concerns brought to the forefront of healthcare due to the COVID pandemic, telemedicine offers an alternative evaluation method. Telehealth extends care to patients who otherwise would not have access to more comprehensive pre-anesthetic care and surveillance. Although studies show telemedicine's potential and positive effects, institutions have not extended virtual visits for all cardiac surgery pre-anesthesia patients. This retrospective evaluation study aimed to assess the impacts of telehealth on cardiac surgery pre-anesthesia assessments in a tertiary-level, private, academic …

How Implementing A Digital Competency Management System Reduced Nurse Training Cost And Improved Npd Practitioner Satisfaction In A Pediatric Hospital, Dionne Margallo

Doctoral Projects

Healthcare organizations must have high-quality nursing staff to deliver optimal patient care. Educators and managers evaluate nurses by their performance through nursing competencies, or “knowledge, skills, [and] abilities” (KSA) (American Nurses Association, 2015, p. 86). Traditional competency evaluations and manual tracking posed a problem within one pediatric hospital. Leaders did not have a transparent way to see the knowledge and skills of their nursing staff. This resulted in increased organizational costs due to retraining and increased workload and job dissatisfaction among educators. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate how implementing a digital competency management system …

Dynamic Habitat Models Reflect Interannual Movement Of Cetaceans Within The California Current Ecosystem, Elizabeth A. Becker, Karin A. Forney, David L. Miller, Jay Barlow, Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho, R. Jorge Urbán, Jeff E. Moore

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The distribution of wide-ranging cetacean species often cross national or jurisdictional boundaries, which creates challenges for monitoring populations and managing anthropogenic impacts, especially if data are only available for a portion of the species’ range. Many species found off the U.S. West Coast are known to have continuous distributions into Mexican waters, with highly variable abundance within the U.S. portion of their range. This has contributed to annual variability in design-based abundance estimates from systematic shipboard surveys off the U.S. West Coast, particularly for the abundance of warm temperate species such as striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba, which increases off California …

Impact Of The Policy Environment On Substance Use Among Sexual Minority Women, Laurie A. Drabble, Cat Munroe, Amy A. Mericle, Sarah Zollweg, Karen F. Trocki, Katherine J. Karriker-Jaffe

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: Sexual minority women (SMW) are at greater risk for heavy episodic drinking, frequent marijuana use, and tobacco use than heterosexual women. Because past research has suggested the political and social environment may influence disparities in substance use by sexual orientation, this study examined associations of the U.S. state-level policy environment on substance use by SMW.

Methods: A total of 732 SMW participants were recruited from two national online panels: a general population panel (n = 333) and a sexual minority-specific panel (n = 399). Past year substance use was defined by number of days of heavy episodic drinking (HED; …
