Dynamic Python-Based Method Provides Quantitative Analysis Of Intercellular Junction Organization During S. Pneumoniae Infection Of The Respiratory Epithelium, Devons Mo, Shuying Xu, Juan P. Rosa, Shakir Hasan, Walter Adams
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Many respiratory pathogens compromise epithelial barrier function during lung infection by disrupting intercellular junctions, such as adherens junctions and tight junctions, that maintain intercellular integrity. This includes Streptococcus pneumoniae, a leading cause of pneumonia, which can successfully breach the epithelial barrier and cause severe infections such as septicemia and meningitis. Fluorescence microscopy analysis on intercellular junction protein manipulation by respiratory pathogens has yielded major advances in our understanding of their pathogenesis. Unfortunately, a lack of automated image analysis tools that can tolerate variability in sample-sample staining has limited the accuracy in evaluating intercellular junction organization quantitatively. We have created an …

Security Problems Of Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Angelyna Mindapa
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Librarians across Nigeria are gradually more concerned with the safety and physical integrity of important intellectual property or properties. Security and prevention of crimes in libraries more specifically academic libraries are necessary library duties for librarians to accomplish. Due to security breaches in university libraries, users at times are not able to get the information resources needed and this makes the library ineffective in satisfying users’ information needs. The security of collections in a library embraces a large number of responsibilities. The cost of acquiring processing, and maintaining collections are soaring. If information materials are stolen or damaged or …

Availability And Accessibility Of Electronic Information Resources In Academic Libraries As Predictors Of Academic Performance Of Students, Fausat Kehinde Adenariwo, Abdulakeem Sodeeq Sulyman
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper argues for the availability and accessibility of EIRs in academic libraries as predictors of academic performance of students of tertiary institutions. It raises the problem that the growing influx of EIRs has revolutionised academic libraries' operations and led to radical changes in libraries' services by making information available to students in new ways to support scholarly publications and identifies e-journals, e-books, e-theses and dissertations, databases, CDs/VCDs/DVDs, etc., as EIRs that can be made available and accessible to boost students' academic performance. It outlines space economy, ease of access through numerous metadata, search engines, online catalogues (OPAC), and protocols, …

Data Driven Control Of Vagus Nerve Stimulation For The Cardiovascular System: An In Silico Computational Study, Andrew Branen, Yuyu Yao, Mayuresh V. Kothare, Babak Mahmoudi, Gautam Kumar
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Vagus nerve stimulation is an emerging therapy that seeks to offset pathological conditions by electrically stimulating the vagus nerve through cuff electrodes, where an electrical pulse is defined by several parameters such as pulse amplitude, pulse width, and pulse frequency. Currently, vagus nerve stimulation is under investigation for the treatment of heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia and hypertension. Through several clinical trials that sought to assess vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of heart failure, stimulation parameters were determined heuristically and the results were inconclusive, which has led to the suggestion of using a closed-loop approach to optimize the stimulation parameters. …

LIS education is more concerned with training in librarianship. LIS education aimed at producing competent librarians to manage all types of libraries in the countries of the world for sustainability. Other information related disciplines such as documentation, archives and records management were relatively unknown when they started existing, thus, they were not accorded prominence. However, librarianship in Africa owes its origin to colonialism. Colonialism introduced reading and writing among the indigenous people. Until then, the two activities were alien. Colonial governments introduced Western education which entailed among others, reading and writing. In an attempt to boost the two activities, a …

Background: Understanding concerns for receiving COVID-19 vaccines is key to ensuring appropriately tailored health communications to increase vaccine uptake. However, limited data exists about vaccine concerns among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Methods: Data from the COVID-19 Effects on the Mental and Physical Health of AAPI Survey Study (COMPASS), a cross-sectional, national survey for AAPI adults in the U.S. were used (N=1,646). Descriptive statistics were used to assess sample characteristics including proportions of AAPI with various COVID-19 vaccine concerns, categorized as none, side-effects only, unsafe only, and multiple reasons, and differences in vaccine concerns by socio-demographics. Ordinary multivariable logistic …

Expected Propagation Time For Probabilistic Zero Forcing, Jesse Geneson, Leslie Hogben
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Zero forcing is a coloring process on a graph that was introduced more than fifteen years ago in several different applications. The goal is to color all the vertices blue by repeated use of a (deterministic) color change rule. Probabilistic zero forcing was introduced by Kang and Yi in [Bull. Inst. Combin. Appl. 67 (2013), 9–16] and yields a discrete dynamical system, which is a better model for some applications. Since in a connected graph any one vertex can eventually color the entire graph blue using probabilistic zero forcing, the expected time to do this is a natural parameter to …

Adversarial Attacks And Defenses In Speaker Recognition Systems: A Survey, Jiahe Lan, Rui Zhang, Zheng Yan, Jie Wang, Yu Chen, Ronghui Hou
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Speaker recognition has become very popular in many application scenarios, such as smart homes and smart assistants, due to ease of use for remote control and economic-friendly features. The rapid development of SRSs is inseparable from the advancement of machine learning, especially neural networks. However, previous work has shown that machine learning models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks in the image domain, which inspired researchers to explore adversarial attacks and defenses in Speaker Recognition Systems (SRS). Unfortunately, existing literature lacks a thorough review of this topic. In this paper, we fill this gap by performing a comprehensive survey on adversarial …
