The technological revolution brought up with the advent of Internet demands that delivery of library services stay in tune with the technological advancements. Search technologies have evolved a long way from text based searching into voice recognized natural language queries. Technology Giants like Google, Apple and Microsoft have filled this marketplace with their products and services to tap the potentials. Integration of the Natural Language tools with existing library solutions provides an exciting potential for traditional libraries to expand their service base. For the users too, this provides a very meaningful experience to access the library resources in their natural …

Formation Of Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies In The Field And In Galaxy Groups, Fangzhou Jiang, Avishai Dekel, Jonathan Freundlich, Aaron Romanowsky, Aaron Dutton, Andrea Macciò, Arianna Di Cintio

Faculty Publications

We study ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in zoom in cosmological simulations, seeking the origin of UDGs in the field versus galaxy groups. We find that while field UDGs arise from dwarfs in a characteristic mass range by multiple episodes of supernova feedback (Di Cintio et al.), group UDGs may also form by tidal puffing up and they become quiescent by ram-pressure stripping. The field and group UDGs share similar properties, independent of distance from the group centre. Their dark-matter haloes have ordinary spin parameters and centrally dominant dark-matter cores. Their stellar components tend to have a prolate shape with a Sérsic …

Tutorial: Are You My Neighbor?: Bringing Order To Neighbor Computing Problems, David Anastasiu, Huzefa Rangwala, Andrea Tagarelli

Faculty Publications

Finding nearest neighbors is an important topic that has attracted much attention over the years and has applications in many fields, such as market basket analysis, plagiarism and anomaly detection, community detection, ligand-based virtual screening, etc. As data are easier and easier to collect, finding neighbors has become a potential bottleneck in analysis pipelines. Performing pairwise comparisons given the massive datasets of today is no longer feasible. The high computational complexity of the task has led researchers to develop approximate methods, which find many but not all of the nearest neighbors. Yet, for some types of data, efficient exact solutions …
