Impervious Surfaces From High Resolution Aerial Imagery: Cities In Fresno County, Yushin Ahn, Richard Poythress
Impervious Surfaces From High Resolution Aerial Imagery: Cities In Fresno County, Yushin Ahn, Richard Poythress
Mineta Transportation Institute
This study investigates impervious surfaces — areas covered by materials with restricted water permeability, such as pavement, sidewalks, and parking lots—due to their crucial role in influencing water dynamics within urban landscapes. The impermeability of these surfaces disrupts natural water absorption processes, resulting in adverse environmental consequences such as increased flooding, erosion, and water pollution. The research employs impervious surface analysis, a method involving the mapping and analysis of these surfaces within specified study areas, including cities, counties, and census tracts. Remote sensing techniques, specifically satellites and aerial imagery, are commonly utilized for the identification and classification of impervious surfaces. …
Transit Workforce Development Challenges And Mitigation Practices, Jodi Godfrey
Transit Workforce Development Challenges And Mitigation Practices, Jodi Godfrey
Mineta Transportation Institute
The objective of this research is to summarize previously conducted research related to workforce development challenges in the transit industry, detailing major findings and subsequent recommendations based on the annotated bibliography of the current atmosphere and most successful ways to mitigate those challenges to attract and retain talent in the transit industry. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. had over 10 million job openings and only 5.7 million unemployed workers in March 2023. In 2017, the Washington Post posited that there were not enough workers to fill the vacancies, as the U.S. Census Bureau announced a 17-year …

Battery Electric Vehicles: Travel Characteristics Of Early Adopters, Yunwen Feng, Jean Daniel Saphores, Hilary Nixon, Monica Ramirez Ibarra
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Do U.S. households with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) drive less or more than U.S. households with internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs)? Answering this question is important to policymakers and transportation planners concerned with reducing vehicle miles traveled and the emissions of greenhouse gases from transportation. So far, this question has not been answered satisfactorily, possibly because of the relatively low number of EVs in the U.S. until recently, but also because of methodological issues. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by analyzing data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). We apply propensity score matching (PSM), …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Research has revealed that conditionally automated vehicles can adversely affect situation awareness, a crucial factor in ensuring a safe transition of driving control during takeover, particularly for older adults. The objective of this study was to design and test more complex multimodal interfaces capable of delivering critical real-time road information, including obstacle locations, statuses, and lane availability, to effectively assist drivers who may experience age-related cognitive and physical declines, when navigating complex automated systems. This study investigated the effects of displays (single tactile, and visual and tactile combined), information presentation type (instructional, informative, baseline), and age (older and younger adults) …

We report the results of the second charged-particle transport coefficient code comparison workshop, which was held in Livermore, California on 24-27 July 2023. This workshop gathered theoretical, computational, and experimental scientists to assess the state of computational and experimental techniques for understanding charged-particle transport coefficients relevant to high-energy-density plasma science. Data for electronic and ionic transport coefficients, namely, the direct current electrical conductivity, electron thermal conductivity, ion shear viscosity, and ion thermal conductivity were computed and compared for multiple plasma conditions. Additional comparisons were carried out for electron-ion properties such as the electron-ion equilibration time and alpha particle stopping power. …

Measuring Service Quality In Academic Libraries: Enhancing Customer Satisfaction., Namita Bayan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
To meet the diverse needs of their patrons and achieve the library's objectives, developing nations must offer a range of services in their academic libraries. The degree of user happiness is significantly impacted by these services. This study's goal is to talk about the established criteria that are used to gauge the level of service provided by academic libraries. It is advised that to administer the library services, librarians employ management tools. They are assisted in making decisions, evaluating services, improving services, and achieving higher quality via tools like ServQUAL, TQM, ISO-9000, and LibQUAL+. To enhance its quality service and …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In recent decades, the Greenland ice sheet has been losing mass through glacier retreat and ice flow acceleration. This mass loss is linked with variations in submarine melt, yet existing ocean models are either coarse global simulations focused on decadal-scale variability or fine-scale simulations for process-based investigations. Here, we unite these scales with a framework to downscale from a global state estimate (15 km) into a regional model (3 km) that resolves circulation on the continental shelf. We further downscale into a fjord-scale model (500 m) that resolves circulation inside fjords and quantifies melt. We demonstrate this approach in Scoresby …

Multi-Resolution Diffusion For Privacy-Sensitive Recommender Systems, Derek Lilienthal, Paul Mello, Magdalini Eirinaki, Stas Tiomkin
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
While recommender systems have become an integral component of the Web experience, their heavy reliance on user data raises privacy and security concerns. Substituting user data with synthetic data can address these concerns, but accurately replicating these real-world datasets has been a notoriously challenging problem. Recent advancements in generative AI have demonstrated the impressive capabilities of diffusion models in generating realistic data across various domains. In this work we introduce a Score-based Diffusion Recommendation Module (SDRM), which captures the intricate patterns of real-world datasets required for training highly accurate recommender systems. SDRM allows for the generation of synthetic data that …
