Social Inequalities And The Adoption Of Health Misinformation In Cameroon: Implications On Health Behaviour, Eugene Nche Che Sep 2023

Social Inequalities And The Adoption Of Health Misinformation In Cameroon: Implications On Health Behaviour, Eugene Nche Che

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Public health restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an increase in the reliance on social media for peer interactions. This resulted in the proliferation of medical misinformation and conspiracy theories that undermined public support for disease control measures, and influenced negative health attitudes such as vaccine denial. The aim of this study was to determine how social inequalities influence the adoption of health related misinformation, and the extent to which the adoption of health misinformation results in poor health behaviours. The study employed an exploratory survey design, and relied on both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect …

Attributing Equity Gaps To Course Structure In Introductory Physics, David J. Webb, Cassandra Paul Sep 2023

Attributing Equity Gaps To Course Structure In Introductory Physics, David J. Webb, Cassandra Paul

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We add to a growing literature suggesting that demographic grade gaps should be attributed to biases embedded in the courses themselves. Changes in the structure of two different introductory physics classes were made while leaving the topics covered and the level of coverage unchanged. First, a class where conceptual issues were studied before doing any complicated calculations had zero final exam grade gap between students from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups and their peers. Next, four classes that offered students a retake exam each week between the regular bi-weekly exams during the term had zero gender gap in course grades. …

Model Binding Experiments With Cucurbit[7]Uril And P-Sulfonatocalix[4]Arene Support Use Of Explicit Solvation Term In Governing Equation For Binding Equilibria, Daryl Eggers, Adam Brewer, Kimberly J. Cacatian, L. Allison Camat, Dominic Castagnoli, Nina Chuang, Lillian N. Chung, Thanh Do, Emily Huynh, Thanayuth Jenpichitkulchai, Anoop Kaur, Frank Le, Roy Ong, Duc Pham, Kevin Shao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The thermodynamics of model host–guest-binding reactions is examined in depth using isothermal titration calorimetry. In conflict with classical thermodynamics, the results indicate that the equilibrium-binding quotient, K, is not a constant for all pairings. This outcome is predicted by an equation for binding equilibria that includes an explicit term for the change in solvation free energy that accompanies the formation of a binary complex. Application of this framework to the experimentally observed concentration dependence of K allows one to obtain the energetic contribution of the solvent, a linked equilibrium denoted here as ΔGH2O. The estimated values of ΔGH2O are large …

Assessing The Size And Growth Of The Us Wetland And Stream Compensatory Mitigation Industry, Todd K. Bendor, Joungwon Kwon, T. William Lester Sep 2023

Assessing The Size And Growth Of The Us Wetland And Stream Compensatory Mitigation Industry, Todd K. Bendor, Joungwon Kwon, T. William Lester

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Interest has focused on quantifying the size and scope of environmental markets, particularly those that offset ecosystem impacts or restore natural infrastructure to improve habitat or promote clean air and water. In this paper, we focus on the US wetland and stream compensatory mitigation market, asking: what types of firms make up the mitigation “industry”? What are the economic impacts–i.e., the “size”–of the mitigation industry? How has this industry changed over time? We present the results of a national survey of mitigation firms and construct an input-output model of the industry’s economic impacts and employment. We also develop a comparative, …

Data-Driven Soil Analysis And Evaluation For Smart Farming Using Machine Learning Approaches, Yixin Huang, Rishi Srivastava, Chloe Ngo, Jerry Gao, Jane Wu, Sen Chiao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Food shortage issues affect more and more of the population globally as a consequence of the climate crisis, wars, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasing crop output has become one of the urgent priorities for many countries. To raise the productivity of the crop product, it is necessary to monitor and evaluate farmland soil quality by analyzing the physical and chemical properties of soil since the soil is the base to provide nutrition to the crop. As a result, soil analysis contributes greatly to maintaining the sustainability of soil in producing crops regularly. Recently, some agriculture researchers have started using machine …

Eta Carinae ( • Car) exhibits a unique set of P Cygni profiles with both broad and narrow components. Over many decades, the spectrum has changed - there has been an increase in observed continuum fluxes and a decrease in Fe ii and H i emission-line equivalent widths. The spectrum is evolving toward that of a P Cygni star such as P Cygni itself and HDE 316285. The spectral evolution has been attributed to intrinsic variations such as a decrease in the mass-loss rate of the primary star or differential evolution in a latitudinal-dependent stellar wind. However, intrinsic wind changes …

Equity In Learning Opportunities For Middle School Students: Connecting Communities And Transportation Through Gis, Tom O’Brien, Ben Olson

Mineta Transportation Institute

Geographic information systems (GIS) is part of an in-demand career skillset that can lead to safer streets in California communities. This project included a three-session bootcamp that introduced middle school students to transportation via GIS and gathered assessments on their awareness of transportation as a career pathway. The project built upon CSUTC TRANSPORTS’ Year 4 project, “K–12 Special Investigation Project: Mapping E-Commerce Locally and Beyond.” The bootcamp for this project was coordinated in partnership with Rio Hondo College, which provided the instructor and connection to the students at the Mountain View Unified School District in El Monte, CA. The bootcamp …

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Ideal Ct Test Using The Distinct Element Method, Shadi Saadeh, Maria El Asmar Sep 2023

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Ideal Ct Test Using The Distinct Element Method, Shadi Saadeh, Maria El Asmar

Mineta Transportation Institute

Cracking is a primary mode of failure for asphalt concrete (AC), resulting in road damage and deterioration, and leading to an increase in road hazards and fatalities. Studying the fracture behavior of AC is an effective way to learn how to best enhance their cracking resistance. To do this, the indirect tensile cracking laboratory test (IDEAL-CT) was developed and used to assess the AC cracking behavior by defining a unique index that allows the ranking of different mixes’ cracking resistance. The sensitivity of the test results to the test parameters is needed to monitor the test’s performance. Several parameters impact …

Online discussion forum (ODF) as an effective pedagogical tool for learning and knowledge construction, designed to make the learning process robust and all-encompassing. It is also expected to facilitate faster and smooth access to learning aid and for individualisation of learning. In spite of its enormous benefits, previous studies have shown that students do not make use of ODF as expected due to factors largely attributed to low level of awareness and perception without recourse to the role of ICT competence could facilitate sustained usage and promote acceptance among students. This study, therefore, investigated ICT competence on the use of …
